I created my own ending to cope with the premature cancellation. Since Ben represents good, Justin absolute evil, & Sofie neutrality (the ability to be manipulated by either), I see it ending a lot like the credits--with footage of historical events over the ages (WW2, etc) with Ben & Justin assuming roles dressed as Nazis, American soldiers, etc...and Sofie always there--as they fought for her soul throughout eternity. Neither good nor evil" wins" as neither has won in real life yet, either.
HBO lied to the creator. They promised a six year run, and reneged after two. Apparently they didn't get Sopranos numbers in the ratings, so dropped it. Shame.

@krritika there's no such a deck. The creators simply made up a deck that would match the character of the show. Lately there was an issue of so called "Carnivale deck" but it's not this one, in fact it's just a promotional gadget. I wish someone made a deck based on those titles...

the best thing to be done is to re run the seasons with good advertising and make people aware of carnivale, most people haven't even herd of it.

@emisferadefecta The intention was that the show would run for six seasons. There is enough story left to be told. However, since HBO has canceled the show we will likely never know the ending (and the creator cannot continue this story in any other media because HBO prevents him from doing so).

Carnival was the best series Ive seen in awhile! It made you think! Then HBO saw fit to cancel it! And treat us to stupid trash like "Rome" which made no sense" And the other gem "Deadwood" which was nothing but some slob calling everyone cock suckers! Yeah real artistic genius!

Carnivale along with Deadwood should finish off the series the right way, not leaving u hanging the way they did, especially in Deadwood's case, after HBO announced it was going to do a 4 hour series finale, what a let down.
I just finished watching all 24 hour long episodes of this 2 season Carnivale series and I would just like to say one thing. This was destined to be the greatest achievement in television history. They already planned the story, 3 books spread across 6 seasons, but HBO had to cancel it.
With alot of TV shows these days I get the idea they only planned the begin and the end, for the middle they spontaniously come up with ideas to stretch out the series.

andrewbluezero, this show is TOTALLY worth buying. Yes it was put to a rather immature end due to the unfortunate miscalculations of dumb HBO executives, but you won't regret watching Carnivale. Even though S2 ends with a major cliffhanger, it doesn't have an 'incomplete' feel to it. Superb narrative + fine acting by Clancy Brown, Amy Madigan, Clea Duvall, Nick Stahl and many others great actors.

Carnivale is a great show and worth buying, however it is really expensive to just by without having seen it. Watch it online and see if you like it first, or perhaps find it for 20 bucks somewhere.
Costco has the season one and two DVD sets for $16.99 each and there is a $5 coupon this month for HBO series sets. That knocks the price down to $11.99 each or around $1 per episode.
One of the things that made this show so wonderful was how incredibly accurate it was in it's accounts of the dust bowl.. Especially the episode Black Blizzard.. I never even heard of the black blizzard until i saw the documentary about it..
because everyone is too content to sit on their hands and not think while they watch tv and carnivale was one of thos shows where you not only learned stuff but you had to be smart to udnerstand it and people dont like having to think or be smart when they watch tv.

The only problem I had with this show is that it was REALLY confusing. Took me 3 hours of reading wikipedia to finally piece it all together and understand it.
(Reminds me of LOST but I gave up on that after the first season)

Another great show cancelled for god knows what reason just like Deadwood both great. Even on Deadwoods 3rd season when everyone says it got kinda bad it was still better than alot of todays shows that are pure crap. They need to bring both back although its to late now i think.
It racked up to 2 million dollars an episode and there just wasn't enough of an audience or following for that. It's an awful shame because it was an amazing show, but we do have to realize how much money goes into those sorts of things...its crazy.
$2 Million? HBO was spending $4 million per episode. They were trying to get the cost of the show cut down to $2 for the third and fourth seasons but couldn't do it.

I think the ratings went down for the second season and that, coupled with the incredibly high budget, finally killed the show. But did you know that originally, it was planned for the show to have 3 installments of 2 seasons with different characters in different periods of time?The first two seasons are "Book 1" and the story was supposed to pick up several years later anyway.
No man actually i did'nt know that,and well it took me about 2 ep to fall in love with this show and you know the only problem i had with hbo was that they left too many questions un answered,they could have given the fans some closure.
plus in my opinion anyway Rome kinda sucked it. I just didn't get drawn in. blah. HBO kinda redeemed itself with Trueblood but Six Feet Under, Carnivale and Trueblood were/are so great. Carnivale should have had a nice run like six feet under did. Really a shame.
Oh and another thing, I personally started to really love the Show only after approx S01EP06,when the ghost stories were dropped in favor of the symbolic, visual storytelling - and AFAIR, this is when the general ratings originally dropped. To each her own ;)

This was destined to be the greatest achievement in television history. They already planned the story, 3 books spread across 6 seasons, but HBO had to cancel it.
With alot of TV shows these days I get the idea they only planned the begin and the end, for the middle they spontaniously come up with ideas to stretch out the series.

so i remember this show when it was on hbo a while back but i never saw it. and im wondering if that was a mistake. i heard it was supposed to have six seasons but got canceled in two. so im wondering, is this show worth buying??? cuz i took a chance on mad men and bought season one and two. i finished one and its pretty boring to me so i need a new show to get into

andrewbluezero, this show is TOTALLY worth buying. Yes it was put to a rather immature end due to the unfortunate miscalculations of dumb HBO executives, but you won't regret watching Carnivale. Even though S2 ends with a major cliffhanger, it doesn't have an 'incomplete' feel to it. Superb narrative + fine acting by Clancy Brown, Amy Madigan, Clea Duvall, Nick Stahl and many others great actors.

Carnivale is a great show and worth buying, however it is really expensive to just by without having seen it. Watch it online and see if you like it first, or perhaps find it for 20 bucks somewhere.

One of the things that made this show so wonderful was how incredibly accurate it was in it's accounts of the dust bowl.. Especially the episode Black Blizzard.. I never even heard of the black blizzard until i saw the documentary about it..

@richiemo2000 Im actually not a fan of Lost...for the most part im not really a fan of drama tv except for Carnivale and Dexter because I love all the good vs evil and the obvious message against organized religion and its ability to brainwash people in carnivale and Ive always had a knack for anything to do with serial killers, thus why I like Dexter (the dexter books are great too!!)...I watched a few episodes of lost and i couldnt get into it.

One of the best, if not the best television show I have ever watched. Its very addicting and plot heavy. The actors are all very talented. I just cant believe they canceled this show. I can't understand how other shows that lack talent and creativity last for years rather than then the genius work of Carnivale. =(

The only problem I had with this show is that it was REALLY confusing. Took me 3 hours of reading wikipedia to finally piece it all together and understand it.
(Reminds me of LOST but I gave up on that after the first season)

Another great show cancelled for god knows what reason just like Deadwood both great. Even on Deadwoods 3rd season when everyone says it got kinda bad it was still better than alot of todays shows that are pure crap. They need to bring both back although its to late now i think.

It racked up to 2 million dollars an episode and there just wasn't enough of an audience or following for that. It's an awful shame because it was an amazing show, but we do have to realize how much money goes into those sorts of things...its crazy.

$2 Million? HBO was spending $4 million per episode. They were trying to get the cost of the show cut down to $2 for the third and fourth seasons but couldn't do it.

I would read that book. I know it's like give us anything! I just got season 1 and 2 off amazon and am having a little Carnivale' marathon. I love every minute of this show . I don't fast forward any of it. Nice job pinhead execs at HBO who cancelled this amazing show. I hope you spend eternity in hell watching Rob Shneider movies.

I heard that the reason behind the cancellation was actually that the show was becoming too expensive to make. Must be due to all that amazing detail

I think the ratings went down for the second season and that, coupled with the incredibly high budget, finally killed the show. But did you know that originally, it was planned for the show to have 3 installments of 2 seasons with different characters in different periods of time?The first two seasons are "Book 1" and the story was supposed to pick up several years later anyway.

plus in my opinion anyway Rome kinda sucked it. I just didn't get drawn in. blah. HBO kinda redeemed itself with Trueblood but Six Feet Under, Carnivale and Trueblood were/are so great. Carnivale should have had a nice run like six feet under did. Really a shame.

I'm still pissed that they canceled this show! What i don't understand, is why people attracted to the ordinary? Ordinary is boring. Evidently, there are a lot of people that are attracted to the ordinary because this show was too "different" or weird. Like someone said earlier, only brilliant people understood this show.
