Immigration is an issue because of illegal immigrants. Not because there are people migrating here legally. There wasn't a huge difference content-wise to what this woman said to someone saying 'I want no more immigration'. People should be arrested for causing a public disturbance like this woman was but they shouldn't be arrested for their opinions. She wasn't inciting violence or anything either. If she had said 'Kill all blacks' or whatever then she should be done for inciting murder but she didn't.

This is why having a US constitution lying around is handy. Under its 1st amendment, according to current supreme court precedent, this woman's speech may be called "unprotected speech." That is, strictly speaking, she's allowed to say it, but her words are inciting ("fighting words") and as such are considered to be provoking unlawful behavior (like the assault to young guy behind her was understandably about to commit) and is itself unlawful.

If you were at the theater, and somebody started ranting in the middle of the movie like that, would you complain if the management had the police remove the person for being disruptive? Also, try joking about having a bomb when boarding a plane and then claiming free speech rights. I really don't get you people who don't understand that there are limits to what kind of behavior is ok.

I can't believe the retards who think that free speech means that somebody has the right to verbally abuse an individual as much as they please. She wasn't just expressing an opinion, she was outright attacking somebody who was just trying to use public transportation. You don't have the right to go around making life hell for people just minding their own business. Try talking to a cop that way, and see how far whining about free speech gets you.

Help me out here. Isn't this woman exercising freedom of speech? I don't suspect she has the intelligence to attribute her actions to such a noble cause. I entirely disagree with her opinions and sentiments - she certainly is a racist bitch, but, is it not true that she has the right to say those things and that we all have a duty to defend that right even if we are disgusted by her abuse of it? Genuinely confused about where the line is drawn between freedom of speech and verbal abuse crimes.

If this woman hadn't made these sentiments on a bus or some public place, but instead had done so through some media forum, a website or on television for example, then she'd have been within her rights. Right?

If the only problem was that she was harassing other passengers then why wasn’t she just thrown off the tram? I have seen several people thrown off trams for aggressive and intimidating behaviour and no one involved thought it was necessary to call the police. This woman despite being offensive was not a threat to anyone, the only reason the police were involved was because she was a racist.

@MrGoodNamesAllTaken I think the fact she was directing it at passengers on a tram and not in staging a protest makes it harrasment.
e.g: Westboro Baptist Church says "God hates fags" or "Fags get out" is disgusting free speech. Dude screams at a group of gay kids, "God hates you faggots!" and "Get out of here, you disgusting faggots!" and it's a different matter
It shouldn't matter that it was racism, if she'd been screaming "you ugly bitches!" at people, the results should have been the same..

@MrGoodNamesAllTaken Rights only extend as far as they don't impede on the rights of others. Her personal beliefs/views are not the crime here, the crime is her behaviour. "Abuse" is the key word here. Rights do not exist to be abused, or else they simply become a problem. In order to protect people, rights have limits.

Rights must impede on the rights of others because we don't live in a world where we can all exist in isolation. Rights don't simply exist, we as a society grant them. For example, most people believe they have a right to have children, but in countries with over population issues that right has been limited or revoked. Rights by their nature are impeding.

I think freedom of speech has very few limits. I do think, however, that shouting racial slurs at people just trying to get home for the night is one of those limits. I can see myself tearing into someone for being a prick or a moron, but verbally attacking people you may never have met before is completely redundant, if not absurdly ignorant. There is a time and place. Have a little class, woman! This also goes for people picketing ANY funeral.

Coughlan, what evidence leads u to opine that this woman was inebriated in any way? Is it not more likely that she is simply a very frustrated EDL member? Or the wife of an edl-er? Kid was cute--in the USA, had this woman done these things on public transport, CYS would have automatically taken the child into state custody. Rosa Parks did not do shit... she sat at the front of a bus, and later admitted that the reason she did not get up was because she was too tired... she did not sit up front and refuse to get up because she was taking a stand against racism, she simply did not want to stand. Anyway, this lady, claiming to be British was disturbing the whole fucking lot, whilst everyone,supposedly not British was being quiet and polite... irony.
