this "necessary minute of mr cyclopedia" was great, as were his subsequent long sketches. he's probably unsurpassed in terms of sophistication. he also wrote at least one hilarious book that evidenced his eloquence and culture. one of his favorite theme was hypocrisy. i may be wrong about this but at times he seems to me like a clown painting on a smile, with some sadness underneath. in the sketches you can also see how his own jokes crack him up, he has a hard time keeping a straight face.
