Bill Wirges was the pianist for the Harry Reiser Band, and was recording director for Brunswick Records in the late 20's. I knew him when I was a young boy in the mid 1960's and he was in his 70's. he was a neighbor of ours, and he and my Dad became friends. I remember him as a kind old gentleman.
I used to use this 78 to test the tonal quality of Victors & Victrolas when I was collecting. I have to admit it made even the worst machines sound great, but listening to it on an Orthophonic was the piece de resistance. Listen to the last 3-4 seconds as the sticks wrap up the beat on the cymbals. SUPERB!
OMG!!! This is the first version of this AWSOME, AWSOME Song I ever got on a Brunswick 78 When I Was 16 years old!!! IT KNOCKED ME TO THE FLOOR!!! When I put it on My turntable!! BUT It was not the first version I heard, The First time I heard this song was by Rudy Valley! on the radieo. I Also have this WONDERFUL version on a Harmony 78 Record! as well as several other versions on Perfect, Victor, Supertone ect, ect, This is one of my all time favorite songs! Thank You For Posting.
The Orchestra is that of William F. Wirges. He existed A piano player/bandleader & recorded for US Brunswick. His recordings usually have no vocal, but when they do it is Al Jolson. Jolson's electric Brunswicks always use Wirges Orchestra w/Jolson. Also it is thought taht the band accompanying Jolson in the sound portions of the "Jazz Singer" (1927) is William Wirges' Orchestra. His band was pretty bland sounding, so it made Jolson
sound that much hotter. An old trick but a good one.
How on earth did you get that picture of me in the Hamptons? I love the Fitzgeralds doing the kickstep at Christmas and the entire video. I think I may be recovered from the Warsaw Nachtexpress. You have outdone yourself..:)
Actually, its Wirges and he made quite a few records under his own name. Reser is in the band and Glen Wick is the vocalist on this 1928 Brunswick record. I've been confused by a misspelling more than once too. :-)

A fantastic piece of music, well played. Has anyone heard Victoria Wood's "interpretation" on YouTube? Very funny and well played.

Great version of this song from the "Paris" musical. Like this much better than the Aaronson version that I've listened to for years.

As a contrast, has anyone listened to the recording of this song by "The Georgians"?
( sub group from the Paul Specht band which recorded on dime-store acoustically recorded labels such as Harmony, Velvet-Tone & Diva )

Great version by a rarely heard orchestra, which recorded more than once with Al Jolson.

As we say in America, even George Bush does it.
Use your imagination to fill in that "it." And no obscenities, please.

Great dance music even without the clever lyrics.
