I think Widor got his idea for this fabulous piece, from another well known French composer. Leon Boellmann. Specifically his Suite Gothique Toccata. Listen to both composers songs, and you'll understand why I say this.
I think the people who play it quickly are covering up the difficulty of the piece. It is hard to play this piece well played as slowly as this, so top marks. Excellent!
The tempo adopted here is closer to Widor's own interpretation, mostly it is played at a much faster tempo, which, however, does not sound wrong and even makes it a bit more dramatic but nomatter, it's still a marvellous piece of organ writing.
