5MPH is barely jogging speed folks. All vehicles should be able to survive a bump like this completely unscathed! I lost count of how many times my '85 Grand Marquis got tapped from behind and not even so much as a scratch. Worst damage it ever sustained was 2 broken exhaust tips when a Hyundai Accent plowed into it doing about 10 MPH. The Hyundai was written off!
Don't fight it man. It was a Toyota crashing into the back of my wife's car. I think I'm afforded the opportunity to make joke at Toyota's expense. And it's not ignorance chap. The reality is that any impact from a car, from behind will result in "a force pushing up." The test doesn't attempt to simulate anything you'd likely encounter in the real world unless you are blind or a very lousy driver. Also, any SUV with the tire mounted this way would likely suffer the same fate
@jdjunkie0202 Same happened to me. I was rear ended by a 07 Impala . the guy destroyed the front of his car. my liberty just had a lil bend where the spare holder attaches to the rear gate.
My wife got rearended in her Libby and all that happened was it popped the sheetmetal in on the door. It'd have to be a perfectly flat surface to pop the glass, i.e. this test. Oh, and the Camry that hit her was messed up really bad. Wonder if the the gas pedal stuck.... lol.
@Jeeptruck86 on the back window. it doesnt have to be a flat surface. my liberty got rear ended my another liberty and the back window shattered just like that one did
jeez, its the same problem with all of the older SUVs that mount the spare tire at the back window, a poor crash rating. man, that looks expensive to fix lol
If you watch other crash videos of similarly designed rearends you will see the same thing happen. The tire takes the impact and deforms the tailgait enough to pop the glass. Not the end of the world
@jean1marc You're right but then once When you got into a real crash, the body wouldnt absorb any of the energy from the impact and thus fuck up the driver and passenger. I'd rather have a car that would let me live that pops a $400 piece of glass than one that is rock solid but will kill me dead at 25mph.
Its easy to get to you just turn a switch and it lowers the tire then u pull it out not a big deal + Those tires look so stupid on the back but maybe if you are stupid enough to back into something maybe you deserve a big repare bill.
bull shit i backed mine into my neibors VW at about 20 miles an hour and all the happend to my jeep was the tire braket bent a lil bit but the ladys car was smasheddd
Its because of the tire, but that tire has saved my ass from a jaguar. The jag pulled out of a parking space and hit it at 10 MPH and it ripped the right fender up on his, ($4000 maby more since it was an expensive model) and no affect on the Jeep.

I'm slowly learning EVERY car with a rear tire on the trunk lid will cause the glass to shatter.

@Jeeptruck86 Then why is it that the Nissan Xterra didn't shatter glass? It had a flat barrier as well.
Ratava252 1 year ago
@Ratava252
Because the spare tire is under, or inside the car. Any SUV with the spare on the door will be susceptible to this type of damage. See Honda CR-V.

@Jeeptruck86 Well that's no good is it. :P

@jean1marc Glass is less expensive than a new bumper and tail gate.

@NullusxVotum still very expensive
jean1marc 1 year ago
@jean1marc its either very expensive or even more expensive with a lot of body work and time. take your pick.
NullusxVotum 1 year ago
@NullusxVotum if they actualy made real strong doors none of this would happen it would cost nothing
jean1marc 1 year ago
@jean1marc You're right but then once When you got into a real crash, the body wouldnt absorb any of the energy from the impact and thus fuck up the driver and passenger. I'd rather have a car that would let me live that pops a $400 piece of glass than one that is rock solid but will kill me dead at 25mph.

@NullusxVotum ok but they can still make strong doors and still be safe and having a car that can still absorb energie
jean1marc 1 year ago
@jean1marc No they cant. No give or denting, no energy absorbtion. It's physics. It's the law of how things work.
