It was this kind of Daytona and Talladega racing that made me fall in love with Nascar. I hated that there for about a 5 year period from 2001-2005 Dale Jr and Michael won nearly all of those races but they were exciting as hell to watch. We got back to that point a little bit this year but it's not close to being like this race here was. There was more passing in the 10 laps here than in probably the entire Daytona 500 this year.
My stepmom was working that day and she got home right when they crossed the line to get the white flag she asked me and my dad: "Has the big one happened yet?" Off turn 2 there it was!!!
This is was the best plate package NASCAR had as far as "pack" racing. Plate racing or "pack" racing has sucked since '02. Probably the only two good races were the two Daytona ones in '07.
if i was the president or chairman of nascar, i'll bring back restrictor plate racing like this. I will also let the drivers race to the finish, not the frozen field bullshit.
@cmahn11 It is quite simple, once big E died, Nascar didn't think it would be TOO safe, and with all the changes to slow cars, and make things safer it is effected the way the drivers drive and the cars handle.. I am no expert but that is just my opinion.
Can anyone tell me what happened to Dale Jr???? I just Jr from 2001-2005 at Talladedega . I went to the fall race in 2006 and he was robbed of that race. Todays resticter plate racing totally sucks with this tandem racing, very boring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@constantdewdrinker88 Not exactly; we lost Dale Sr. that year. Other than that, I'll agree it was pretty cool. I was especially siked when Jeff won the championship.
@constantdewdrinker88 Oh yeah, I know. Hopefully we get a taste of the old Talladega when they go there this coming weekend with the bigger restrictor plates and something else to keep the cars from being stayed locked together for as long.
@constantdewdrinker88 Yeah, but we still had good racing in the 06 race. At least, up until after the big one happened. From then on, the only wild part about it was the last lap pass.
@constantdewdrinker88 Dale Jr. said that the track's gonna get it's bumps back quickly, and he's got IDK how many Nationwide wins there, plus he's a 2-time points race winner there, and I think he's won the Bud Shootout twice too.
@constantdewdrinker88 Me neither. I like everyone at HMS except Jimmie Johnson, so I'll be for Jeff, Jr., and Kasey to win it. I'm also a fan of Edwards, Keselowski, Lagano, Mark Martin, and I'm also looking forward to Danica Patrick entering part-time in Cup.
this is when Dale Jr drove like his daddy ever sin e that 04 win where he cussed on TV that's where he went down hill this was the old Dale Jr 99 to 04. now he just sucks
@MRNASCARFAN25 lmfao, this "downhill" your talking about didn't start when he swore in victory lane. It started when his stepmother wouldn't give him majority ownership of the company his father created for jr to own one day. Really there was no downhill for Jr, that takes balls to back out of the company that brought you into the sport and move on. Good thing he did too, look where DEI is now. Yea he had a couple rough seasons, but so be it, nobody is perfect. Hes kicked a lot of ass this year.
when everything was right with NASCAR. Winston was in charge, Jr was in the #8 Bud car with DEI & the cars still looked like their street counterparts...
@dwinter66 oh yea!! the fans have been begging for that for years, his voice is too perfect for it not to be heard during the entire race broadcast :)
I was 13 when i saw this race, one of my first races. My heart rate was through the roof. Of course my fav number is 17 so at the time i liked the 17 ans stuck with him. Gald i did to this day. amazing race though. blew me away.
Even though there was a big wreck at the end, this race reminded me of the golden age that NASCAR was in at this time. A great blend of raw, young talent and old, savvy veterans who all shared one common, important thread - RESPECT.
I use to love watching Restrictor Plate racing but now with this whole 2 car Tandem it has just become so boring and so artificial. I usually love watching Daytona and Talladega but this year it's been a bit of a bore fest. Don't ask me why the drivers think this racing isn't any good.
@fleetadmiralj The way he was able to drive to the front like that, I'd venture to say that this might have been one of his best restrictor plate cars with the exception of the 2007 Daytona 500.
@caseyreavis Naw they need to move the fans waaaaaay back and take off the restrictor plates and go at it, and even if they go airborn they wont hit anybody
Somebody should've reminded Tony Stewart what team he was on after this race. He just dumped his teammate on the last lap and gave the win the Dale Jr.
@NascarFreak3 Mayfield was fired from the #12 car towards the end of the season and they elected to put Mike Wallace in the car for the remander of the season to preserve Ryan Newmans rookie status for 2002.
Man 2001 was one of the best seasons of all time. Before someone says but Dale Sr. died that year, yes I know he did and sadly when a majority of people talk about the 2001 season all they want to talk about was Sr. death. But 01 produced some of the greatest memorys, closest finishes, and the racing at just about every race that year was phenominal.

all they need to do is make the front and back bumpers on these COT pieces of shit not line up... i'm sick of the "2 car draft phenomenon".... it's old news... and that's another reason the short tracks (mainly bristol) are becoming boring.. they can slam into the back of each other and keep going.. used to be a gentle tap and you get sideways.... anyways, if they make the bumpers uneven i think we could go back to this....
I wuz sitting right where the wreck happened I couldn't c any of the blocking I just saw Bobby flip alot of smoke and a whole bunch of cars smashed up
I hate that they can't race back to the line now, if it's the last lap and the wreck is behind the leaders then why not? alot of times they throw the rule out the window anyway like in the 07 daytona 500, by rule Mark Martin won the race.
if this was nowadays they woulda wrecked as soon as one person got 3 wide thats how shitty of drivers they r now back here was the best not crazy faggets
@KingCuervo88 hell yeah especialy any race restrictor plate race from about 99 to hell watching carl flip and brad winning it last year all of em are good you know its a race when you hear the crowd going nuts for jr
Ah yes, the good ole days when a crash on the last lap doesn't end a race prematurely, and racing back to the checkered

I hate that they can't race back to the line now, if it's the last lap and the wreck is behind the leaders then why not? alot of times they throw the rule out the window anyway like in the 07 daytona 500, by rule Mark Martin won the race.

This was so good for the whole country. This was a few weeks after sep11, and just bc his dad won this race the year before.

I'd say this was Bobby Labonte's last competitive race. Something happened to him after that wreck and he was never the same..
Nocstaa 2 years ago
have you never seen him and jimmie johnson at charlotte in 2005? That was some good racing man watch it!
FooFan0001 2 years ago
Yeah I saw that, Jimmie beat him in the final feet. But what I meant was that it was the last time he was competitive week in & week out.
Nocstaa 2 years ago
