@champfodz2012 and anyone else, he has a built in fernandez sustainer, he leaves it on harmonic mode, leaves on the flanger, so it just shits out feedback all the time but when a fret is held in it resonates the harmonic of the note, plus all the throwing around unbalances the trem and bends the neck a bit, nothing else really :)

Vai is not relevant to the music scene unless you are a wannabe rock star and he is not what I would ever had aspired to be. I have never heard anything by him on the radio because he doesn't appeal to any but those who want to hear bizarre guitar tunes. I can write/play the same but prefer to appeal to a wider crowd. Rush was never pushed on the radio but has been a platinum selling band for years. They are relevant.

The reason why Vai does not appeal to your average listener is because most listeners are not musically educated. It's so boring to hear such simple pieces, I like to challenge myself a little bit, I do like simple music as well, but I get bored of it.

IMO - Vai and others like him stray away from being musical to suit their own whims; good or bad. Rush has never sought to appease any set audience other than themselves yet they remain musical and have a huge following. AC/DC is indeed simple music. Pretty much every mainstream song is simple. Simple is not much of a subjective thing. A typical four chord progression of very common chords is simple, a drum beat of kick snare kick snare with hi hats every eight note is simple. Now, Chopin's use of counterpoint is complex, it takes more of your antention to really appreaciate it. Most of today's mainstream music is "catchy" because of its simpleness. @micahguitar14 Well you know...with a sustainer you can make ''noise'' sound cool like he does by flipping the harmony switch on which gives the ring out an extra octave. So that...and ofcourse Steve's editing makes it sound less noisy. But I think when you would be there live, it would be a bit more noise instead of the clean notes you hear on the dvd.

@micahguitar14 thats not volume, hes turning on something like a sustainiac, or fernandez sustainer, to keep the strings vibrating, thats how you see him fret random notes, and they're still heard. from there on, it's pretty much just open string noise and a flanger. possibly a whammy pedal too, if there is one, it's almost certainly being controlled off stage by a guitar-tech', going by vai's seeimingly random flailing around, although it's possible that it's rehersed, and all planned out. :)
