  • I'm not actually taking the piss here, but I learned left foot braking on a Logitech G25, then perfected it in a rally car. I never brake with my right foot now!

  • Man I miss Colin Mcrae.......Rally will never be the same without him and of course Richard burns :- (

  • This is a true master class in driving. He's absolutely caning it and having a conversation at the same time.

  • why he doesn't push the clutch when he is shifting?

  • @shonezi1988 sequential box

  • @YamahaBlaster With a sequential, do you only need to use the clutch for starting off?

  • @911SHIZBO and with some sequential boxes if the revs are below a certain point

  • @911SHIZBO I don't know loads about this type of box but I believe so yes

  • @911SHIZBO Straight cut gears, much stronger. Even with h-pattern boxes you can just slam it into gear.

  • @DaktorPhil Really eh? That'd be interesting to try.

  • @shonezi1988 I also wonder too

  • Not something to try on the roads.... trust me

  • and who says men cant multi task? driving like a boss, whilst cluing in the finer points of rally driving to a woman

  • I find that tensing up the muscle used to bend your ankle back and forth helps when left foot braking. It will give you more control and keep you from bearing into the pedal and locking up your brakes or activating your ABS. At least until you get used to it that is.

  • i naturally just left foot brake, after karting for years, made it a habit :P

  • Colin...one & only ! R.I.P.

  • I would crap my self sitting beside a rallydriver in a rallycar. And here Colin is just speaking as if he was sitting on a chair in his kitchen... ;o)

  • A great man sadly missed. R.I.P Colin

  • I guess it helps not having to use the clutch!

  • How can they even speak?! Good Lord...

  • TO ALL DRIVERS OUT THERE!!!

never try braking with your left foot in traffic. the left foot is used to smash in the clutch, so you will break much to hard and the inertia of your body will brake even more.

the same thing happens if you brake whil adjusting your seat :D

  • @heldgop i have a sequential racing trans so i can left foot brake all i want :P

  • lol nice conversation during a leisurely country cruise.

  • Legend!

  • Why he don't use clutch?

  • @HungryGreeny

semi automatic gearbox, you dont need the clutch to shift gears

  • Comment removed

  • But i can see the clutch pedal in this vid. Is there some need in clutch anyway?

  • @HungryGreeny

Yes, it is used for the take off.

  • @HungryGreeny you still need the clutch to launch the car, or when you come to a complete halt. but once you've gotten going, you can up and downshift without using the clutch. its called a sequential gearbox.. you cant call it a 'semiauto', because it doesnt change gears for you.

  • @KoMDraegast The Ford Focus in this video uses a sequential gearbox, not a semi auto.

  • @emtildeath

still doesnt require the use of the clutch on recce's except for take offs and hairpin turns

  • @KoMDraegast Clutch or no clutch, it does not make it a semi automatic gearbox. Semi and sequential are two very differnet types of boxes. I think after 20 years as a Ferrari mechanic I know what I am talking about :-)

  • i love how hes so chill and conversating but if you look at the bottom left cam that shit looks mad crazy,i'd be freakin out well thats why i'm not a world renowned rally legend xD

  • For people wondering why he can shift without the clutch look up PPG gearboxes or "Dog box" gear boxes. There's still a clutch you can use but the PPG dog boxes allows for flat-shifting or clutchless shifting as well since there's no gear syncros to worry about.

  • i think on rally its really most important to break with your left foot isnt it?

  • looks like hes doing morse code with his feet

  • He drives really fast for an Oger

  • Holy shit i just realized driving an F1 car isn't that hard anymore.

  • @LoserMcBeaver Yeah right. Bet you wouldn't even get one off the line without stalling.

  • i brake with my left foot when i have an automatic...I AM THE GREATEST DRIVER IN THE WORLDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @MyBoogeryBooger Its a semi automatic you ignorant child

  • @snipski0894 dude i wasn't even talking about colin mcrae you idiot, i was just jokingly talking about myself..its not even semi automatic...semi auto is like when u have no clutch pedal....this is FULL manual..sequential manual to be exact..

  • @snipski0894 I would say you are the ignorant child, Semi Auto boxes are not permitted in rally driving, this is a sequential gearbox huge difference.

  • i allways brake with my leftfoot when i dont have to shift. That means im borned to be rally driver? :P

  • I was watching this with a friend who said it needed subtitles... bull shit I can understand him perfectly.

  • 0:48 that's the jump...(points back) what a badass lol

  • asswipe

  • Rest in peace Colin, we still miss you and your flamboyant driving.

  • LEGEND!

  • left foot braking was a front wheel drive technique that translated over into 4WD - it settles the car into and through the corners.

somewhere on here there should be a vid of stig Blomquist showing the difference in the car's attitude with and without left foot braking, back when he was driving SAAB turbos (so early 1980s)...

  • "some of the greatest drivers in the world never left foot brake" and who even thinks he has the right to say this to Colin McRae

  • @AndyVortex88 I think it was a woman. I don't blame her though because I once got a girl asking me what color are rally cars.

  • 0:49 "missed the jump" haha

  • my left foot has no sensitivity so i always brake too hard and nearly hit my head on the wheel.

  • @mjfan123085 i got the hang of it after a while

  • @mjfan123085 thats why there's the HANS device ;) but you'll look weird as heck driving around with a helmet in traffic in, say, a toyota camry

  • @mjfan123085 That's why it takes practice..

  • @mjfan123085 same !! im learning !

  • funny thing is...hes goin slow haha

  • @MBPtheFirst rally cars are N/A

  • @dirtygaz Actually no, WRC has been always turbocharged. Nowadays the cars use a turbocharged 1.6 liter engine. Back then, a 2.0 liter turbocharged with 300 bhp.

  • @Angel27071991 i never realized the stratos and the escort where turbocharged...

  • @ednut69 The WRC as we know, are a type of cars that entered into force after the group A. Rally cars are divided into different groups, such as group B, group A, group T etc ... some are N / A and other turbocharged. What I'm saying is that WRC type are always turbocharged. Don't get me wrong.

  • Its only good when you don't have a clutch to work with though.

  • @100littlecurses Hey dude, talking about "its only good when you dont have a clutch to work with" Well i would say check that clip out. It will proofe, that some driver even break with their left foot even a clutch needs to be worked ;) Enjoy it !!!

  • @seppel412 Yeah, he has a tipronic transmission- no need for a clutch. I guess the clutch pedal is there for a kick when sliding or something. However, I think it is possible to left foot break and heel/toe the break and clutch at the same time. Though I doubt it would be very effective.

  • @100littlecurses clutch is there for road sections

  • @Keegz2k7 So, do the new wrc cars as of this year require clutch work with the manual gear change, or is it the same as it was before?

  • @NexicProductions i think it's the same as before, because they're still using sequential :) i noticed 3 pedals in the car earlier (mini wrc) and when dani was taking me to the start of stage, he was using clutch to change gears.. soo road mode :)

  • how do you shift w/o using the clutch?

  • @nuocmat semi automatic

  • @nuocmat sqentual gearbox?

  • the best there was R.I.P. dude

  • rally drivers are AMAZINGGGG drivers...

  • Rally cars sound fucking awesome on the inside, loved that high pitched whine as it clims through the gears.

  • @Dudeinabox supercharger

  • @MBPtheFirst Transmission, not supercharger. It gets higher pitched the faster the car goes is a dead giveaway.

  • @MBPtheFirst VTEC yo!

  • i bet she was shiting her self

  • Everyone asking about how the gear changes work you should consider learning more about the transmissions/gears that go into rally cars, i.e. PPG, Dogbox, RA gears, etc.

  • changing gears no clutch..??

  • @diwiak you dont need a clutch to change gears. many top drivers use left foot braking

  • @Psylonz what have left food braking with gear changing..??

  • @diwiak it has everything to do with it. think about it.

  • @Psylonz explain please.

  • @diwiak well if you are using your left foot for braking, that means you are not using it for clutch apart from starting and stopping. this means when you are driving the ass off the thing the only way to change gears is without the clutch (because ur left foot is on the brake), therefore you have to find the right rpm for it to change into gear and as Colin said, your reactions are quicker etc.

  • @Psylonz thanks, its hard to understand in the begginning of video for me, is there some kind of semi-auto gearbox??

  • @diwiak I understand it to be semi-auto, yet there is still a clutch pedal for the road sections between rally stages when you have to drive normally. It would be odd to use launch control at a normal stoplight. I doubt that they're shifting without a clutch...

  • N1bbYz@ it's quicker that's why Colin said the tradition between the time you move your foot to the brake the left has been there done that

  • I don't drive a car yet , But can plz someone explain me whats special about braking with your left foot ? cause it seems obvious to do it. Right foot = accelerate / Left foot = break. enlighten me :)

  • @N1bbyZ the reason why people are taught t0 use the same foot is mostly for new drivers (everyday street, not racing). A new driver thinks about everything. Using one foot eliminates one thing to think about. That's my guess. However, I think we should teach left foot brake because that may eliminate "I thought I was hitting the brake" when they were actually pressing gas

Anyway, I've been left foot braking for years. I find it very easy, and gives the left something to do, lol

  • @Armistice023 Haha thank you for the answer :D i went driving with my dad for the first time and i understand now ^^ Btw , I was joking around crossing my feet (right foot : Clutch , left foot : gas/brake) Telling him it felt best that way. He got really pissed then though...

  • @Armistice023 if you want your left foot to do something get a stick...

  • The co-driver (interviewer) is a woman called Penny Mallory ex british rally champ in 1993 .She drove WRC cars too one of the top female driver in world . Michele Mouton is the best and was so near world champ too.

  • How the hell is he changing gears?

  • @kickassmanga you dont need a clutch to change. its actually easier on the gearbox to change without a clutch if you get the rpm range perfect.

  • I left foot brake commuting to work every day.

  • i left foot brake when i play gt5, forza3, and dirt

  • the fastest rally driver to ever live, just wished you would've kept it on the the bloody track more times, then Colin would've won many more rallies&world titles,My motorsport insperation,RIP COLIN MCRAE

  • @100pru INSPIRATION is what i meant,lol

  • now you have clutchless shifting. no need to rightfoot break.

  • @WeakSignaI

This video shows he doesn´t have to clutch with foot either. Look back at groub b rally footcams, to see the REAL shifting mastery...

  • @s1003232

If you need to cluth to shift you lose time

This way the car is going faster than group b i guess

  • @s1003232 is he driving a semi

  • his footwork is insane, so many tiny adjustments and so quickly, no wonder kimi was know where last season.

  • Multi-tasking at its finest LOL

  • @CJAEY i find that funny cause i cant have a conversation with people when im concentrating on driving

  • I would have a heart attack if i was in that car.

  • Very easy technique, and simple- In practice- only for drift/ slide

  • @wdowa94 Nope. I assume you're 16 and don't actually drive. Left foot braking is great on road and track in a FWD to reduce understeer and change the angle of the car in a corner.

  • sh esayas, "some of the best drivers in the world dont do it." he is the best in the world hahaha

  • I miss Colin he was a good driver and a good man

  • i never realised how fast and narrow the track was until this video. that is some serious, fast paced shit right there., i knew mcrea was good but bloody hell....

  • how is he changin gears without the clutch?

  • He's the Grand Master Jedi

  • i need some professional answer on this one: what kind of gearbox is this? he changes gears without a clutch...

  • Sequential gearbox ..... about 100.000€ with many sprockets for different gear ratios for a wrc car.

if you match revs in a normal manual car, you can shift without clutch, but it aint good.

    watch pages: Xtrac or hewland

  • @naturalyshocked yeah, I know about clutchless shifting, though I never tried it...some parts will pobably fall off from my dad's skoda felicia :D.. i am doing some techniques like heel toe and double clutch, but no clutchless shifting..anyway, thanks very much!

  • @thestoryteller612 sequentially gearbox it's called xtrac you use the clutch just for the 1'st and reverse

  • R.I.P.

  • //\\// R 1

  • She handled that crazy ride well.

  • sometime i use my left foot for throttle..lol

  • i can drive too on left foot braking. i am only 13

  • @kyoshoallu wow you are so cool...bull shit

  • in a car with a syncro box, i mix heel-toe and left foot braking (or sometimes even both foot braking if i really made a hash of it). in a car with a sequential or a dogbox, the clutchpedal is only for taking off and stopping to 0, the pedal has no right of being in the way of my left foot and should be a small lever on the steering wheel, preferably under the down-shift flipper

  • yeah it's a lot easier with paddle shifters. even so in autox when you basically use 2nd gear the whole time it's a great skill to learn. I dunno about 'both foot braking' though! =)

  • master

  • rip mcrea

  • Amazing control and speed. I've been getting into some arcade rallying this past year, and I've so much respect now to these people and their form of racing. Simply the best in terms of versatility and speed ^^

  • Respect!

  • The best place for an interview with McRae. :D

  • R.I.P Colin McRae

  • I wish rally cars still had that stick for shifting rather than that weird single paddle.

  • @danthemanpatrick Depends on the car!

  • soooooo... hes left foot braking an very rarely touches the clutch? you can see him changing gears without the clutch at points... can someone tell me how does that work?

  • @burrowssj semi auto gearbox

  • @Dashed0 sorry.... sequential gearbox

  • @burrowssj he is just matching the engine RPMs to the tranny RPMs. If you do that you can shift without needing to use the clutch.

  • @cixelsyd40 wrong.

  • @burrowssj The car's are all equipped with either a sequential transmission, or a dogbox, which lets them shift rapidly without using the clutch as the gears are never far from disengaged (in laymen's terms). Motorcycles have used sequential gearboxes for ages and thus rarely need to use the clutch to shift, just blip the throttle, shift, get back on the throttle and you're on your way.

  • Colin Mcrae is one of the VERY FEW famous personalities that did not get bashed or insulted by any reasons.

    Everybody loved him.

  • Speechless

  • Racing local Rallies, and certainly speedway I also just about always used left foot braking (depending on conditions, just as with Karting. Now this depends on the gearbox as well whether it is sequential or not also plays a big part.

Colin was a legend and one of the nicest fellows I think I have ever met.

  • Here he is not even pushing the car and looks sooooo CRAZYY! I can't imagine what it's like when he's chasing time!!

  • thü Bräääääk, thü ræææit fyyyt..... That Scottish accent aint easy to understand.

  • i don't understand... how is he still changing gears if he doesn't touch the clutch pedal?

  • @gab0624 It is a sequential gear box operated by paddles on the steering wheel. He is shifting without using the clutch by momentarialy blipping or lifting the throtle to synchronize the gears up or down. The transmission is probably a dog-ring style which is designed for this....as opposed to a sliding gear or synchromesh transmission. It is very similar to many motorcycle transmissions.

  • rallying is some crazy stuff, i dont understand how anyone could be the passenger, im afraid of being the passenger of a go cart.

  • wth is the clutch still doin ther when he shifts without stepping on it?!

  • @09204418448 They use the clutch pedal for starting off only. This is exactly the same as driving a shifter go kart...including the left foot braking.

  • @09204418448 you need it to start the engine

  • @theanswer00 well how the fuck does my manual escort start without my fucking foot on the fucking clutch pedal?!

  • @09204418448 you put it on "N", but when you have to start a race, of course you don't want to lose time insterting the first gear, noob

  • @theanswer00 wtf. does it even connect to the topic of the fucking starting topic shit?!

  • This guy is a legend!

  • RIP collin

such a shame he died in a helicopter crash... not even in his fav. sport :(

  • Not half obvious u's twats are reading from a book and writing in exactly what ya see.. Grow up.. Get each others numbers and dicuss it

  • RIP Colin!

    DEP Colin!

  • I drive an automatic and I do actually prefer left foot braking because I feel that my reaction times are faster and my reactions are more precise as well. In most road driving situations, the shortened reaction time is really not needed, but in traffic or in poor weather conditions, that 2 tenths can sometimes be the difference between a safe stop and a hefty insurance increase!

  • One of the best... RIP Colin!

  • хорошеее знание спецучастка

  • omg! he is teaching how to do a left foot breaking and still driving fast as hell!!

colin u were the best there,

    was the best there is,

and the best that will ever be!

    RIP from portugal

  • McCrea was simply amazing.

Doing all that with left foot braking, talking all the while and even pausing to think about the reporters stupid questions.

    First Class.

  • @zildog She's not a stupid reporter, that's Penny Mallory, Ladies Rally Champion 1993 and overall one of the best rally drivers around. She's asking 'obvious' questions for the sake of the viewers.

  • @zildog shes a driver too you know

  • cause I drive an automatic I actually do this, and would consider doing it in a Manual,

  • i dont think he tuched the clutch at all

  • I dont think he did.

  • is using automatic clutch gearbox off course!!! you can see him changing the gears near the wheel. Up gear he push it forward, down gear he push is backwards.

  • @tommyjones1978 how is it an automatic gearbox!!! when u can clearly see the clutch pedal!!!! its a sequential box!! the car has 6 gears, they only use the clutch seting off, while driving at that speed to save time and keep the engine and boot levels high, they change gears without using the clutch!!! of course it wares out the clutch, but its not a matter att all, cuz its only meant to last for soo many miles, this is motor racing my friend, race cars are completely diffrent to road cars!

  • @shaftiee

No, it doesn't wear out the clutch to shift without using the clutch, it wears our the syncros in the transmission to not use the clutch. Of course it depends how good your are at doing it. If you can match the vehicle speed with the engine speed with the gear you are selecting, the syncro wear will be little to none. On the other hand, if you are way off in your gear selection for the vehicle and engine speed, the syncros will wear very fast.

  • @osht1 your thinking of clutchless shifting on a typical car. these cars arent typical cars. their trannys were designed to handle the stress.

  • Straight cut gears are the key, also the reason for some of the whine you hear. Helical cut gears are quieter but you can't clutchless shift, well you can but not for long. But that is old school stuff, I think the new trannys have microswitches and stuff. I haven't paid much attention to it in a while.

  • @gunnydogs

The gear type does not affect the shifting. Contrary to popular belief, selecting a gear does not cause it to mesh or not mesh. All the gears are always in mesh and are always rotating at their different speeds. Selecting the gear only determines which set of gears are locked into the final output shaft. Look up manual transmission operation.

  • Gear type does effect shifting, significantly. Yes, they both have syncros, but you can clutchless shift a straight cut transmission. Meaning, the time to press in the clutch, engage the next gear, release the clutch is going to take longer. Blip the throttle while engaging the next gear, can't do that with helical cut gears. This example is based on lap times using a tremec then using a Jerico. YMMV. Look up info on racing transmissions

  • No. All the gears (except for reverse) are always meshed together. If they are always meshed together, how can gear type affect shifting? It isn't like the gears are meshing and unmeshing.

It all depends on synchromesh and method of locking the output shaft to the desired gear.

So this goes back to my very first post; clutchless braking has no negative affect on clutch life, it has a direct affect on syncro and shift mechanism life.

  • So why do they choose straight cut or helical cut gears? Like I said, it has nothing to do with gear selection accuracy/ease. Accuracy/ease comes down to the syncros and the way the gears are locked into the final output shaft.

Gear cut choice comes down to noise and power efficiency. Helical gears are quieter, but at less efficient as some of their energy is converted to side to side load force. Straight cut gears are louder, but convert more of their energy to rotational force.
