i think the visual is oil lighting, they put colourful oil in a projector and play around with it using a blow pipe, and it projects the squishy lighting effect

The only experience I had, coming close to your situation was, when a buddy of mine gave me that tape with Jimi Hendrix on it (that was the first time I heard him...I was 12 years old...rock'n'roll initiation)! Should be an honor for Mr. Göttsching to have such an effect on his listeners!
