@nuttyprofessor64 Nope did not know that. So much talent comes outta Jersey, cuz people are trying to find anyway to ESCAPE! Hey, I was born in Bayonne, so I can say dat!
@calwaite : Sorry , I was in the Marine's somewhere in Viet Nam when this song came out . We heard mostly 4 top's , The temps. and Main Man "James Brown " over there. So I really - Missed this song !
John Adams. We scrimmaged them, too the same year on a non-school day. he sucker-punched Mel Keaton, a Bryant forward, in the mouth. FK Lane was Bryant's nemesis, lost to them in the Queens playoffs my soph and junior years. Edddie Fogler (Flushing), Bob Fiedler (Cleveland) were North Queens big guns that year. Mel is retired from Con Ed now, but I think his lip is still swollen.
my father casey spencer wrote this song.i've heard him claim he was depressed when he wrote this song..happy man was the jive five's highest charting song..ironic!!
I remember singing this song wearing black Keds with orange laces and cut-off bermuda shorts with the ends hanging in triangles with way Mom cut them. I also rermember the O-Yeah! song but I forgot his name.
My mom said this song was about my birth on July 26th 1965. Mr. Pitt, my dad was Norman Johnson. Any truth to the rumor? Internet says my dad did not write it. Help me ouy.
I played b-ball @ Erasmus Hall HS in Brooklyn and we palyed this to "psych" ourselves up. Must have worked; we won the City championship in '65. Love this song!!!
@69LaFrance Coak, Ollie, Sol McMillion, Frank Payton, and me were the starting team in '66. Great memories. Coak and Ollie have passed. I don't know about Frank and Solly. I spoke w/ Coach Kirshner a few months ago. He's in great health and still as sharp as ever!
@42McCool Jeez...sorry to hear that. Will have to let the Bryantites know. Mike Maloy, who jumped center against you and later starred at Davidson, passed two years ago also. I had a much better day at Erasmus in 1981 on my FDNY lieutenant exam...
@69LaFrance My best friend back in Brooklyn just retired from the FDNY. Do you know Mike Burke (Bat. Chief)? 42 years. Mike and I played on a number of B-ball teams in the late 70's and early 80's. How about Gene Carty, Henry McDonald. Charlie Kaspar, Bat. Chief (9/11) anpother good friend and b-ball player. Jim Riches.
@42McCool Mike Burke was Capt. in L.147 on Cortelyou Road. I had Gene Carty as a fireman in L. 104 on South 2nd Street. Charlie Kasper was appointed with me, played college basketball at one of the Catholic Schools. Charlie and I were also lieutenants together in Brooklyn. I knew Henry McDonald, but not well.
Ollie Shannon was hitting a lot of long-range jumpers that afternoon, Could you be the fabled 'Tisch'?
@69LaFrance Nope, not Ronnie Tichkevicz (sp). I'm Hughie McMahon (St. Jerome's. Erasmus, Marquette). You might have known some of my brothers: John, Stephen, Patrick, or Christopher.
@42McCool Recently transplanted to the Atlanta, GA suburbs. Still own property on LI, hopefully not for long. An unrelated note...half of Bryant's players that year lived in Brooklyn (Marcy Projects). I'll always remember the trip back from Erasmus that evening on the Flatbush Avenue IRT...a cool late-fall Friday. Some of the Bryant guys were teed because Shannon didn't bother to remove his sweats.
Do you remember "Swing Dancing", that was the real old school dance, thats before
it was kidnapped and changed, then relocatedn to the south where as always they want to say it started,But we know the truth don't we? Swing Dance....AKA "Shag"....Kinda like the "Twist" lets just take it. Surprise you? I
don't know why,if you can't make it,take it and make it yours. Sounds Russian.
WE HAD IT FIRST........You know who danced and who couldn't.....still can't.
I was especially happy when this became a big hit right in the middle of Beatlemania and the British Invasion. It showed there was room for all kinds of music on the pop charts at the time.
I missed this song and a few others as I was in the Marine Corps in 1965 and away in Far Places and New Adventures! I really missed some Great Music back during my time in the Corps. I'm gald there is Youtube. It gives me a chance to see what I missed out on !
@B4BoomersBlockBoy7 far off places... I love to dance but alot of peepz don't dance like we did back in the Day ! Every once in awhile I come across a female who can "Get Down " and Dance like the " Good Ole Dayz ".
This is a song we guys can relate to.... Just imagine... You tube brings this wonderful song to us.. so, whenever a negative exists, just you tube this song... Very uplifting... Thanks
