They all kept their foot firmly on the brake. No wonder they couldnt stop or steer. If no abs you take your foot OFF the brake and then pump it repeatedly on and off as fast as you can. Its called cadence braking and is amazingly effective. It takes courage the first time so practice on an empty car park. Its how ABS works.It would have saved most of them here as they had time to use it.

@SuperRoger1953 A lot of those cars and trucks have anti-lock brakes as standard equipment (they're very very common on American cars) so pumping the brakes increases stopping distance hugely and is a very bad idea.

When it is that slick nothing helps other than trying to steer into a curb.

I did say 'if no abs' but should have phrased it better.and yes sometimes you have to give up trying to brake and steer for a better place to crash such as a curb,snowbank,bushes etc.. But to regain steering you have to come off the brakes,which takes knowledge and lots of guts. Even advanced anti lock brakes which allow some swerving have their limits.
