I always trap all villagers in their homes, then make a wall or fence around it before I let them out. Nice little Village :P Makes it harder for them to take a 5-mile swim or drop

Ya I have found one of the houses (in not useing your world) has a chest and usually includes something like 5 or 6 food, iron armor (I got 2 feet and chestplate once) and some iron bars so definitely worth looking for. Gotta hunt around a bit - especially with their doors bein all weird but it's worth it :)
