  • Who are "We"? I know I'm part of the "We" you speek of. It doesn't really matter how popular Linux is, it's pretty much right where it needs to be. I have been a Linux user for a long time now, since about 1999. I never ever could stomach the bile that is called Windows. Hell I knew DOS was crap so why use something built on crap? My first computing experience was on UNIX. I mean if you prefer to be spoon fed, get Windows. If you like to think for yourself, get a Mac. I'm poor so LMDE is for me.

  • This video is soooo outdated.. I think Linux has a valid chance of reaching mainstream as long as we look at people who actually care about the OS on their machine.

At my university there are more people using Linux as desktop / laptop than there is Windows / OS X users.

This is due to a lot of specific reasons like the ability to use AFS, Latex, Vector graphics (Inkscape, Dia, Xournal etc.), SVN, and so on..

Not long till Linux hits a highschool marketshare and then it'll boom :)

  • back when this video was made i would agree with him but now linux is far beyond ready its perfect the power it gives to the user cant be matched and the ease of setup and use is unmatched there are still the pro distros that not everyone can use but there is a home for everyong in linux and ones they get used to it they will be far happier

  • Linux has been ready for a long time... And really it doesn't matter what envoiorment you use.. If its linux you can install wich ever envoiroment you want on it.. I've never had a problem with Linux forums... So i have no idea what this guy is talking about...

  • I am watching this on a Linux distribution Lubuntu 11.4 on a 3 gig laptop and the pages are loading faster then the speed of light, screw windows screw apple, This cost me the price of a black dvd , this is awesome i have a dual boot with windows 7, but I use Linux as my main operating system, When i want to see a blue screen crash freezing and missing dll files and are you sure you want to continue messages I load up windows,

  • like ya vids. jus not to happy about dat rtfm comment. I am def technically minded, bad judgement yung man.lol

  • Windows needs a single stable standard API/ABI for graphics. PERIOD.

This will draw gamers, give it the air of high-performance, and draw the masses.

Too bad every kernel needs a new driver that may or may not work flawless and several kinds of frameworks for high-performance graphics. Mesa, DRI, what else we have?

  • @JustineBieberxoxo every kernel needs a new driver? I don't understand your comment here. Drivers aren't changed to accommodate the kernel nor do they need to be replaced when the kernel is updated. They do update drivers due to finding flaws, errors, or just something that makes the device work better but that is the same with any operating system. I may just be reading what you wrote wrong but that's what i get out of it.

  • @tazdevilman1 I meant the high-performance vga drivers in particular.

Graphics drivers for me seldom/never work properly on any kernel version, (at least the nVidia and ATI ones. Intel used to do well, don't know about now.)

Besides, if they were meant to just work, why do break so often?

Even if we fix up the video subsystem, there needs to be some consistency in the audio department.

At least Linux Standard Base is going in the right direction.

  • the whole standardized argument is crap. When a program is written it doesn't matter what window manager your using. Mac isn't a mainstream os either and everyone on the planet uses Linux weather they know it or not. There are three people i know who refused to use computers cause windows frustrates them and they know use Linux and update and maintain there computers themselves who were computer illiterate only a year ago. People use windows cause it came with their computer.

  • @tazdevilman1 Agreed..

  • Standard user interface LOL...

  • I must say Linux has a chance to make it big. It's only been 4 years since this video came out, and there are some very userfriendly Linux distros now. I've converted a few friends to Linux because they only use the computer for things like internet, and Linux is much faster and has a very low chance of getting a virus.

I've got 1 friend using OpenSuse, 2 using Ubunu, and 2 using Mint, and they're all very happy with the switch. and none of them are computer savvy

  • linux = community power(usually donation based)

mac = proprietary company + few software and hardware company partner

microsoft = proprietary company + almost all software and hardware company partners

for business to move to linux, linux should provide a OS which is easy to use and easy to fix. also provide support whenever it does. telling user that it does not crash would work for ordinary consumer but for business people it will not.

    just my opinion.

  • i umm embarsed becuase i own a windows xp but i cant buy another computer

  • @TAILSGIRL11 don't have to download an ISO of a Linux distro of your choice, dual boot with windows and get your drivers and system configured then you're ready to go and don't worry it can be erased without ruining your hard drive :)

  • True to say it's very difficult for your average Joe to jump into some of these distros that are out there. The truth is most ppl today are curious about technology. Like picking up an iPod and figuring out how it works. Picking up Linux is just the same. Once you do a little searching you find ubuntu. Once you land on ubuntu dot com you pretty much set with Linux.

Ubuntu is the gateway to a friendlier Linux Just like you said about Mac and unix.

I was actually lost at a time when I found th

  • @influxiam

You Sir, is a very well distinguished and observant fellow! Kudos to you,me & everybody else who migrated to using Linux for we're all became AWAKE from our deep sleep of computer ignorance. I will say this & i'm not pulling any punches: The Average Joes out there are plain stupid, Idiotic and ignorant. Our Job as Linux Users is to wake them up and show them the Light of computer Knowledge. I take my job very seriously & hoping for the destruction of the Microshit Company.

  • I like Windows 7 64-bit... but that;s just me, I guess.

  • google watched this video.

  • Nothing is ever gonna be totally transparent. People who won't put in the time to learn their systems just aren't going to get much from them. I think transparency should be viewed as getting more out of the same amount of time learning the OS. But you can't eliminate that time altogether. There is no instant gratification.

I switched to Ubuntu from 7 after also trying some Slackware variants. It's all I use now, because it can do most anything if you learn how. Windows isn't even on my disk.

  • ubuntu is just a piece of crap, every new release, it will freeze when it boots

  • @install2012 It's you, i never had any problem with booting/dual booting any linux OS.

  • Yur too scared to install it fully on yur HDD. You think it's kool to know know what the F RTFM means... Yur a noob.. Yur not a real Geek yur a nerd wanna be!!! lol I don't care where you've been loser. know what yur speeking about before you do.. you main stream mindless drone....

  • Linux is for real geeks.. not you.. just cause you can't understand how to use it cause you're like everyone else trying to stray from Windows, doesn't mean it's not the most powerful OS ever made. You give up to easy like all the rest.

  • Doesn't Android use linux? If that is the case then Linux is now one of the most popular operation systems around.

  • @DAB0690 Yes, Android is using linux.

  • linux is already popural

  • iam running linux from opensuse 11.4 and i cant find any un user friendly on this operating system instad of knowing the name of the application to find for what i want to do.

  • you know whats kind of ironic at 4:15 he said oh putting our info and data and tools on the web..novacut and ubuntu one lmfaoooo

  • I don't know what RTFM stands for and I'm running arch Linux without any issues. In y opinion, even the more user unfriendly Linux distros, like arch are fairly easy to use

  • @Xemerau RTFM stands for "Read The F***ing Manual".

  • i inserted a linux dvd into my moms mac then booted it up from linux... omg it was sooo funny. she han no fucking clue what happened to to her computer :)

  • Macs FTW :)

  • Linux is popular. :)

  • I use Linux, Ubuntu to be exact. I love it :D.

Ive been trying to get my family and friends to use it for a long time, but they wont :/

  • @welcometothetbrawl i got my dad using it although he tried red hat before and didn't like it and my 5 yr old brother but they aren't very fond of FreeBsd

  • @welcometothetbrawl until they get rid of the command line architecture it won't take off for the general public. It's like DOS man. Who wants to type in longwinded commands. Plus there's so much fragmentation and competition with all the distros...it's a complete mess.

  • @HiredGoonage Because people hate to learn.

  • @739199 People shouldn't have to learn much when it comes to an operating system...it should be transparent. It's function is to run apps conveniently. Currently it's presenting at a level of Windows 95 where half of it can be used through the GUI and the rest needs command line bullshit, although it's obviously not as bloated as windows (yet). I'm enjoying it, but it can be frustrating.

  • Well I was watching this i was downloading linux to put on my second computer XD

  • @KJW997 same

  • I agree to the point that it is difficult to promote linux to mainstream do to the fact of it philosophy. Still linux is and will be widely spread across multiple embedded devices and used in science and on universities, not to mention that it is leading in servers OS and is backbone of internet (read linux as unix variation). Microsoft windows and mac, on the other hand target wides audience to sell as much as they can for profit.

  • /me facepalms at chris's predictions and "requirements" windows and mac deal with GUI changes all the time. People usually want to change the defaults to customize it to their own likings. Meaning different GUI's are good, it leaves more options and so far all of them seem to be user friendly. now if there was just terminal base os, yes that is less user friendly but look at how many people used dos back in the day.

  • i didnt see any stable user friendly linux distrubution linux so slow something wrong.my machine runs very well on win7 but the linux distrubition i tried fckins so slow and doesnt work normally.(kubuntu 2011,pardus2011,ubuntu 2011,open suse2011,linux mint they are crapiest os i have ever tested))))

  • My mom is old. Never used a computer before and she knows how to use Ubuntu, but that's because that was the first OS she was introduced to. It's just easy. But when it crashes! it freaking sucks!!!!!!!! you literally have to research for hours just to fix something that is not working. Windows works just fine and when it crashes is easy to fix.

  • @DeathMetalforever You're right, ubuntu and it's derivatives are easy to use but when they crash all hell breaks loose. If I can't get help and can't reset it, I just back up my files, system and just re-install it again with no hassles or the bs of a cd key or activating through the phone or the computer as you do with windows. Idk about you but microsoft makes me feel like a criminal when that happens.

  • @Eltsacwenify Yeah I agree that Microsoft makes you feel like that but it's because of counterfeit software and piracy protection. You have to understand that.

I personally have been back and forth between Linux and Win for years, but after trying more than 100 Linux distros and many many freaking hours I finally made up my mind. I found THE PERFECT Linux distro! at least for me. JOLICLOUD OS is imo the best of the best of Linux so I won't switch ever again. Jolicloud and win 7 is my setup.

  • @DeathMetalforever My favourite distro is AriOS which is a ubuntu derivative. I love it. It's really fast and easy to use and has heaps of repositories so the programs are always up to date. Compiz works really well at full speed with the latest version 11.04. Joilicloud sounds great too, maybe one day I'll try it out.

  • Mac is even more expensive than Windows, and it's not Linux, so why do you talk about OS X?

  • Pretty sure linux is already very very popular! especially in the server world, the question is when will linux take over microsoft and mac............ android services already started this takeover.

  • THIS GUY SUCKS!!!

  • i like xp i love xp... xp is the shit...

anybody ever ran lindows... i have it sucked

  • This guy is a Genius .. Admit It Suckers !!

  • @MarvinPumpkin If he's a genius then why isn't he a developer? Why hasn't he written a single piece of software?

    He's another pseudo geek.

  • Dang this video was posted in 2007, the dude was right! look at Apple right now man, its on its way to kill Windows, with Lion coming up....oh snap. You better become friends with Steve now, sooner or later, he is gonna take over....

  • @josuehdz0 inb4 surprise windows 8 rapes all.

  • @aliancemd Firefox 4 didn't came out at the same time because it needed to be tested with the release and also to match ubuntu theming etc. FYI I had Firefox 4 running on my 10.04 install 2 months before it beeing released with daily updates of the nightly builds. Yes there were PPAs available, you just need to search for them.

  • Yeah, my dad knows nothing about computers.

Oh wait, he taught me everything I know...(about computers)

  • I've got two family members over 80 doing just fine with Linux Mint with the gnome desktop. Now, my son and I are there for support for her, but we've had to troubleshoot less with Linux than we did with Windows.

  • This video is four years old, and should be replaced by an updated version. I'm afraid people I'm recommending Linux to will get put off Linux by it.

My experience with the MacBook I bought in 2008 was (and still is) a total nightmare. I "defected" to Macs with all the enthusiasm and joy of having escaped Soviet Microsoft, only to find even worse problems. Good solution is to allow FOSS programmers to set up a "low profit" business which will allow them to totally devote themselves to Linux

  • @MeshugenahScientist Whats a FOSS programmer? My last name is Foss.

  • @pikefan23

A "FOSS programmer" is a "Free Open Source Software programmer".

  • Mainstream dicks are just this, dicks. How about professional users?

  • freedom = GNU+Linux+Debian+awesome;

  • Linux looks like fucking windows 95 or dos or something...disgusting looking. Oh, did I mention it sucks? `sudo - # app you suck#

  • @TheJedimaster6788 windows 95 ? your linux must come from that year :p

  • @TheJedimaster6788 try KDE

  • Well, that wass over 4 years ago, what do you think now Chris? You have all valid points there, but want to know if your experience changed or anything said here changed.

  • When you ask Windows user is it any good they probably say yeah it's awesome. When you ask is it fast they probably say not really. When you ask why don't you use faster, more stable, virus free, etc, etc, Uubuntu they probably say I'm not listeniiiing.

  • I would say that Linux Mint is way user friendly than Ubuntu, it is Ubuntu but better!

  • Well yeah.. Mint bases on Ubuntu but it is easier to use. Then again, it has less features etc. Oh and why you need more user friendly OS than Ubuntu? Ubuntu is easier to use than Windows. Yeaah you need to use terminal but with google you find every command you ever need. Just copy paste.

  • @Nikotiini69 Use google to find commands is not they way Linux will gain users... I use Ubuntu as my main OS but I still think it's not good for newbies... Making some simple things in Linux is a pain in the ass... Sure, after ~1 year u start knowing the commands but that's not the way it should be. It should not use any command at all. It should be like in Windows, the commands in command line are mostly for programmers...

  • @aliancemd You can download most of the programs you use with Ubuntu straight from the program center or what ever it is in English version or the synaptic. Only things I need terminal for even now when I would say I'm a little bit over the newbie state, maybe a low-medium user, is to install tarballs (simple enough even for newbies when you just read the readme files) and converting mkv files to avis or dvix and I don't think an actual newbie would need to do even the tarballs.

  • @aliancemd Ofcourse at the start of your use of Ubuntu you would need terminal to install all the exrta libraries, but seriously tell me, is finding a long list of copy&paste commands easier than googling, downloading, installing, hoping not a virus method on the Windows?

  • @Nikotiini69 It is... Example: when firefox 4 came out I was using Ubuntu 10.10,at the time there was no PPA for it so in order to install new or non-popular software u have to take care all the dependecies get installed before trying to compile the program(btw, the compile process is pretty different for diferent software which again makes it harder to install) while on Windows u have 1 Universal Installer which doesn't need internet(like .deb) and installs for 32-bit or 64-bit with 1 installer

  • @aliancemd That's just 1 program. Mozilla people/canonical probably had their reasons not to release it more widely. Now it is in program center.

  • Hahahaha hes just pissed cuz he likes Mac and sees Linux comming to kick his overly priced OS's ass, but in all honesty he has some valid points, but in recent years Linux (primarily Ubuntu) have been getting quite user friendly, I think if there is a bigger awareness of what Ubuntu can do now, then I think we can see his time table cut in half

  • Linux is in the mainstream. It powers most embedded devices like rooters, TVs, cameras,... It is the most popular server OS and it is the most popular smart phone operating system (android). So you have been proven wrong. OS-X hasn't really taken off. Microsoft is still dominating the desktop market.

  • RTFM= Read the f***ing manual.

  • i am completely lost on to what this linux thing is. i have windows 7 and if i install this will it become my new OS or what

  • @heaheaheaa O_O holy shit...

  • @heaheaheaa You can install Linux without removing Windows 7 and when you turn on your computer you can choose which OS to boot into.

  • I use Joli OS which is Linux, I dont really know about Linux. But I took Chris' advice from another video when He said "try them all" try every OS. I've only ever been a Windows User and I've looked around on a Mac, but I never thought I would use a Linux Based OS and i'm loving Joli OS it is so much faster than Windows 7

  • DAMN RIGHT MisanthropicWish. although in a way..it is a great GEEK side symbol of the Libertarians. FREE to own, alter, share, copy and install on as many computers as one wishes with NO charges, no product codes to keep inputing on every reinstall , no " windows geniune certification" bs to go through for any updates. FREE AT LAST indeed.

  • I'm a long time Linux user and have no intention of ever changing that. I really don't care if Linux ever goes mainstream, but I would like to see it in governmental applications. I believe that it would save billions of tax payer dollars nationwide while providing a more stable work environment.

  • As someone who uses Mac, Windows, and Ubuntu Linux, I am certain that Linux has no chance of becoming main-stream until the shell and the applications become much more user friendly.

Linux compares more with a well done version of Windows 3 than any other OS.

  • Linux is not about getting popular among noobs or taking over mainstream markets. And it never sought to be.

  • U mean just because Linux has variety & little pain in ass initially for newbie . If somebody learns little Linux then there is NO COMING BACK TO WINDOWS !! U go Fuck Urself !! Don't talk bullshit Publicly !! U seems like a Windows Fan-boy !!

  • Its 2011 im finally dabling in linux

  • @iplayrb1 Yeah, me too. Just started with Linux a month or two ago with 10.10. Couldn't stand Win. 7 STARTER edition on my netbook and I gave Linux a shot. Been using it since and now I have my entire syetm running on it--no dual boot. I am using 11.04 Beta 1 now and despite a few minor bugs, I LOVE IT. I hated Unity in 10.10 but there's something about the way they've tweaked it in 11.04 that makes it possible to enjoy. Note: 11.04 is still in Beta and the stable distrobution is coming 04/28/11

  • Linux is a house divided, since it wars with it self ,it will never take over windows .Pulse ,open source is a double edge sword. anybody can take code from Linux and patient it.I believe this is already happening with some devices. Personal I will enjoy Linux because I like it not because xyz does. If you like windows good for you and If you like mac good for you. I will not diss you for your personal choices. A computers is a tool and nothing more LOL.

  • @wooka64 "Wars " with it self? Linux operating systems DON'T compete the way Microsoft and Apple compete. Everyone in the Linux worlds SHARE things for the good of open source way of computer life. Everything else ya said..makes perfect sense. good deal.

  • linux is opensource what is better than that, a person can play with thae core, can learn other peoples code, its freedom, of course windows doesnt offer that its all hidden monopolised, i hope in future linux starts to have more atention in the markets só that games and stuff that windows is prevelidged to use also will be available in linux, linux will become more user friendly it will come to a point that the command line will not be necessary to do complex things. C language is core kernel.

  • Best Distro: Backtrack 4

    I'm just sayin'...

  • It already is. It is the most popular OS for mobiles (Android). Soon on the desktop too.

  • I really want to put my Copy if windows 7 ultimate away and try out any linux distro :) I never used it... I need to try it out

  • Linux is the best... But probably too frustrating for Windows users.. not savvy or devoted enough. Oh and it will be the "Primary OS" in the Future, Windows is just a fad, not a basis for the technological way of life. Linux is and will be the only universal platform for a long time in about 10 years. Apple is not completely UNIX.. The linux kernel is better anyway... and Linux is a "UNIX like" OS.

  • What a mac fag, your not a real geek if you use Mac, queer bait.

  • 4 years late...

now every douche bag uses linux and thinks hes elite

  • jeez hell no...i'm watching this video in 2011 and linux is not even close to being ready. I have ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7. I find myself using Ubuntu only for server isues and a bit of hacking thats all. Other than that, as a comercial OS, its not even close. No software, STILL no stability, I don't care what people think, if your machine can run linux better than mine, point made, linux is not for any hardware. Wi-fi isues, and just a bad structure, install something and everything crashes.

  • @RavenHouseProduction No software ? What are you taking about Linux has tons of software ...

Do you mean no software that you have to pay money for ? Because that is also not true ... I haven't seen a crash in Linux in years, but I have Windows crash about two times a year ...

  • yeah, no software.. show me any CS3 or CS4 Software on linux, there is none, show me Reason or Fruity loops on linux, there is none.. you have to hack everything , install wine, and even thats not enough, fixes bugs.. nothing works out of the box when it comes to hardocore software.. no photoshop.. No crashes? Maybe not entirely..

  • @RavenHouseProduction No software ... hahah what about "Houdini 3D" one of the industry leader in 3D animation ? What about "Pixar's RenderMan" also made for Linux ?

As far as CS3 and CS4 that's why they make Virtualbox, vmWare, WINE, crossover, play-on-linux, cedega, and parallels for linux , and before you say any dumb crap using Virtualbox in Linux to run Windows isn't much different than what you have to run Virtual-PC in Windows 7 64bit to get legacy software to run ... "XP Mode"

  • @maw88ify my point exactly. You need aditional crap to go along with most of the software out there, you know what, just research it you little linux freak... Even people in the linux industry admit linux sucks at some points, dont be such a fanboy, allready told you I have linux as well.. Da-hoy...

  • @RavenHouseProduction You say you have a server, and you hack , but when come to doing a small bit of tweaking Linux you act like it's such a pain .

What do you need that Linux can't do ?

Adobe illustrator ? Linux has Inkscape , Xara Xtreme for Linux just to name two.

or Fruity loops ? Linux has Audacity, Jokosher , Hydrogen Drum Machine, LMMS

or video editor ? Linux has Kdenlive , OpenShot Video Editor ...

I think your real problem is there is no software for you to Pirate.

  • @maw88ify jeez, calm the fuck down dude... Most of that software you mentioned sucks or doesnt meet my needs, and I never said anything about pirating, I think you're projecting, not expressing an opinion... simple minded pricks like you amuse me...

  • @RavenHouseProduction I'm calm, but what you are doing is saying rude stuff to try to cover up the fact I was correct . Now I know you are full of crap. I would bet money that you haven't use most of the software I just said. Xara Xtreme for Linux for example is one of the world best graphics . You also don't sound like a server admin .

  • @maw88ify whatever... get a life...

  • @RavenHouseProduction I find that I only need Wine to play Guild Wars occasionally (works perfectly without any tweaks) and to use Notepad++ (only because I haven't bothered looking for an equivalent). I can do everything else I need with native stuff: transcoding videos with Arista, watching TV shows via Flash, play Nexuiz, using Filezilla to occasionally update my shitty website, scan (with "Simple Scan") and print without installing extra drivers/software, and talk with friends on Skype.

  • @chinoto1 A commonly pointed out equivalent for Photoshop is Gimp, harder to use, but has the features. As for stability, I've installed Ubuntu on my laptop, my desktop, and a friend's laptop, neither of us have had any problems with the OS itself, we only had slight difficulty adjusting to new UI. I've tried the live cd/usb of Ubuntu on several computers and I only had trouble with reading a MicroSD card and using the wifi on a laptop that was having problems in Windows too. Test Linux again.

  • @chinoto1 good for you :). I have a lot of problems because I need software like adobe CS3 or CS4 and wine doesnt cope with that.

  • @RavenHouseProduction lol yes it does what are you talking about?

  • @RavenHouseProduction Older versions like Flash 8 , Dreamweaver 8, Fireworks 8, and Photoshop CS2 all work perfect in WINE.

That's what they make VitualBox for. CS3 and CS4 both will run in Linux under VitualBox.

  • @chinoto1 there are alot better programs then notepad++ were have you been!!! check out emacs and vim and even gedit.

  • @numba1netsfan I quickly tried out the gtk versions of vim and emacs for the hell of it, Ctrl+C doesn't mean copy in one of them and I couldn't type anything in the other. Gedit is fine for simple stuff, but Notepad++ is far better. I would like to have something native, but I would want it to be able to do column editing, advanced searching, and replicate many of the TextFX functions (eg: trim trailing spaces, delete blank lines, line up by char). Besides, Notepad++ uses the GNU GPL, FREEDOM!

  • @chinoto1 :/ your not giving them a full chance you must be really new to linux because Emacs is probably the most used text editor even on mac OSX coders use it. Gedit isnt very good. You shouldnt knock an editor just because copy and paste is different emacs and vim can do all that stuff you mentioned. Plus Emacs was made by GNU themeselves :) but give Geany a shot many people say that it is superior to notepad++

  • @numba1netsfan I heard about emacs, but i use Gedit because I am not that good at Emacs. notepad++ is cool. I played around with that once but once again till I learn how to use that stuff Gedit will have to do .

  • @maw88ify

Most people have Windows 7 home premium. You need Professional or ultimate to get the microsoft XP VM. Fortunately there's something simple in windows called "run in compatibility mode". Right click, run program. Easy. Linux... *Pop in windows CD, download Oracle VM, install OS and activate just to run a single app*

And for X64 windows 7, only 16 bit or lower native apps won't run. And I don't think too many people are running pre-windows 95 programs much nowadays.

  • @codeythesilent Linux has WINE that is a " compatibility layer " and crossover, play-on-linux, cedega are all compatibility layer almost the same as a compatibility mode ... and software made in 2007 and higher will run in Linux WINE including MS Office 2007 .

  • definitely think what he's saying is true, but I have got my mom on linux. She's 65 and i just taught her how to turn on a computer ~6 years ago. Since then, I've taught her how to use firefox (for email, google searches, and wikipedia), and a word processor...

After constant problems with XP including viruses and spy ware slowing her pentium IV to a crawl, I switched her over to linux mint 10 last year. She's been amazed at the stability, speed, and lack of error messages. impressive no?

  • "Standardize experience?, Primary operating system?" = Mac. There you have it.

Linux is about openness, freedom and choice. Chaotic it may seem but look how far it comes.

  • ha! one said linux on iphone 3 in 3 months , 3 years and still nothing viable

  • @ox141jf Android phones use the Linux kernel ..

and there is the " Linux ELSE Smartphone " google it... it's cool

and I think you can put the Android OS on an iPhone...

  • Do other people hate the guy in these videos? Every time one of his videos pops up on my screen I just want to smash those ridiculous over sized monitors over his bloated ego.

  • dude not knowing what rtfm means nothing i have no freakin clue what it IS and i have build a computer in fact i am running ubuntu as we speak i have installed over 10 different linux distros your stupid im freakin 13 your whole attitude makes you seem like a dushbag i will not sub you if my life was on the line, your such a know it all. All i have to say fuck your

  • Linux will take off on the mobile platform, as Google is already demonstrating with Android.

  • Reminds me of how far we've come in 3.5 years...

  • RTFM= Read The Fucking Manual!!

I looked it up on wikipedia

  • he uses knoppix 6 and so do i...

  • linux 6 with microknoppix :D

  • now it will not . i like ubuntu but my dad keep sayin if i use ubuntu ill regret so i dont but i think i will not regret but i stillcant download but still 90% of this world are using windows

  • Ubuntu's got a powerful community :)

  • You are a window users since hell knows when and you know absolutely nothing about UNIX family. What can you know about it if you tried it from a live CD only? All you people run lets say Ubuntu and talking bullshit that it's not user-friendly, hard to use. You are UNFAMILIAR with the new OS, which is a completely different thing. Windows != Linux. It's just different. Remember your first day with windows. How was it?

  • Yes, ustream is available for windows. that the program he is using to record/brodcast!

The program is actually flash-based so it will also work with linux or any other OS with Flashplayer.

Maybee when he recorded this in '07, it was mac-only. IDK.

  • Hi, I use Linux as major OS for 5 years.

I must say I was really lucky that I had many people help me in those premature days. Now I do all every daily things on Linux, excluding gaming only.

But after all this, I think all is quite worthy. That's my personal experience if you ask me. Glad to hear you ask for opinion in the end.

    Yes, keep the open mind.

I must say I was really lucky that I had many people help me in those premature days. Now I do all my batched operations, coding, even sometimes kernel hacking.

But after all this, I think all is quite worthy. That's my personal experience if you ask me. Glad to hear you ask for opinion in the end.

  • compiz aka compozitor the monitor fucker

  • My grandma is using Ubuntu :D

  • Linux is more popular than you

  • nahw man, the different desktops aint fighting, they're options, FREEDOM - what its all about

  • Question:Will Linux Ever Be Popular?

    Answer:No

  • @ioannisvogiatzis It already is.

  • OSX is BSD and Darwin. Darwin was most likely developed by Apple.

  • oh! wine... the poor emulator, which can not emulate many things, but good if you want to see screenshots of images, instead of playing them...

  • Wine will make linux more popular

  • its not going to be popular,

  • NO IT WON'T AND PEOPLE GET A MAC

  • @1234567abc3 cool, atleast you get its not going to be popular, even after shipping free CDs, no one is using it....LMAO

  • @abhinarayan1 dude I HATE LINUX AND WINDOWS MAC IS THE BEST

  • @1234567abc3 are U an "art student" ?

  • this to u bro but linux the best to me win xp r 7 or visa to me suck ass i take linux r red hat it haves every thing and windows xp or 7 cant do more like linux can do

  • Are you trying to be a nerd? I dont know what URL stands for.. why do you need to know?

P.S. Was this video made with a security camera with color?

  • I think linux will not become popular for one reason: Too many distros. ubuntu, fedora, mint, opensuse, and so on. People buy windows and Mac more because there is one distribution of each. I honestly believe some of these people need to come together and produce a better distrobution.

    Unix/Linux Forever

  • @rifall as smart as computer science fags are, they are not very intelligent their elitism and self glorification will be the fall of any proper free distribution that could appeal the market Mac and Windows hold, specially the Mac one, for computer engineers and computer science grades and so, editing video, music , design, animation, editorial , etc tasks are considered as "useless for dumb people" , their own arrogance will make Linux fail, hell they even bitch about the existence of a GUI

  • @porkyminch01 Not sure what you are saying exactly. But that may be true. But still, if you are trying to get into the PC market, you should be smart enough to build a Personal System. By this, I mean a system with flexibility to meat anyones needs. So many distros, like you say, are acting too smart for illiterate users.

  • its all about the capitalist monopoly pigs like Microsoft that wont let anyone one i mean anyone ruin their plans for world domination. If the companies like Asus, Compaq, Toshiba, HP, etc give linux a chance that will force microsoft to and other to make softwares for linux as well.

  • remember everyone this is almost 4 years ago

    A LOT has happened

  • @ryancouture a lot has happened in 4 years. but not enough...

  • @xybersurfer then you dont use ubuntu

OSX/windows do nothing now ubuntu doesnt do - ubuntu is better than windows in every way, equal to OSX (same underlying technology) but i like it better because its completely customizable

the ONLY thing it doesnt have it SOME proprietary software, DirectX for windows (i'd dual boot anyway) and on the mac, none for me but some i know they cant live without final cut

for everything else theres Wine -i could never go back to windows pending a huge upgrade

  • @ryancouture i have had ubuntu 10.04 and some previous versions since it came out and i'm sure the underlying technology is fine but i was thinking more in terms of usability. i would mainly like to escape the command line and obscure configuration files a bit more. although it would be nice, i'm not that concerned about compatibility with windows.

  • @xybersurfer do they not have the software center in 10.04? i've never "HAD" to use the command line in 10.10 - just the odd time for some deeper customization/user privileges

  • I don't like linux i tried ubuntu with wubi it's to hard to use

  • im on ubuntu and i know everything about it i can acually hack stuff with it it nice the one thing i hate it doesnt have any itunes for a touch and no video editing program or one that will download i dont like it

  • I have linux on my netbook ...
