Hey, I've been doing much reading on Architecture. Career, Salary, Growth, Pros & Cons etc. I did this because I was interested in the field, although I have read many complaints about Architecture about clients, deadlines, and pay. If it is awful to be an Architect, why do so many people still pursue it or continue practicing it? Seems like you really have to like this field and not really care about making a living or having a life. Either way it was sad reading this, because I really liked it
Are the mathematical details very stringent for architects? I have a BA degree and I know I would have to play some math catch-up if I wanted to try for a Master's in architecture or urban planning. What exactly is required?
@Nightmonkey17 It's not that bad at all. The curriculum's ask for Calculus at the most. Some schools you can even slide by that and just take trig. It's not a big deal. HOWEVER, the more science and math courses and the more independent courses you take --like accounting and construction courses-- the more likely you'll be hired on.
Architects are underrated as their 'job description' is A LOT more detailed than what most people realize.
I really want to be an architect, although I'm only 16, I've really been into designing buildings for a while. I have a question. can you desighn buildings/houses in a style that Tim Buton uses. if yes can you please make a video of you drawing a Tim Burton style house? *-GOHAN377-*
Hi Doug, thanks for the great videos! I found them really creative, inspiring and funny, specially for me that I'm already and architect, and somehow sometimes feel exhausted about our profession. But you pointed out clearly the passion on it that we shouldn't forget. The passion that shows in all your videos. Thanks!
@smwtrs11 Yeah, the economy is crashed, nobody is building anything. Look into microprocessor mask designing, at least you will have a steady paycheck with a Fortune 500 company, unlike half of the architects out there sitting in the unemployment line.
I'm thinking about becoming an architect for a while first it was joiner until i went back to architecture for the basic advantages like wages and experiance, is it possible to still become an architect if you can't draw well. I can draw decent-ish diagrams of joints but this is far more complex
Hi Doug! What is the name of the software you use to show the finished product on the end of the movies? Is it Autodesk Sketchbook Pro? I hope you can help me.
@howtoarchitect Do you know any good softwares for design and arcitecture? There are so few softwares! Or maybe to many... I like to sketch and design without all the technical stuff, if you know what I mean. Any softwares you recommend?
@danelkarouni hi! Thank you for the reply. I have used Chief architect before, but I did not like it... don't know why... however, I look for programs that you can use for design like Doug and to show the drawing or sketch in 2 point perspective, not in 3d... and yes, I have tried google sketchup;) But thnx anyway:)
@howtoarchitect hello, ive just recently joined a 6th form in england, basically a college, ive chosen 4 subjects, Chemistry, physics, Design Technology, and IT. I got A for my DT coursework and A star on my Graphics, with these subjects will i be able to do architecture? im really interested in it i used to spend extra hours in school just for my design. Im just wondering if architecture is a happy life and i dont want too many negatives. thanks
hey doug i am 14 and i am interested in becoming an architect when am older i really think it would help me if you make videos of drawing not just architerctural drawings and post them i think it would help other people as well.
I still hate my clients. They will ask me to change a single wall 300 times by two inches. By the time they finalize the drawing, it will be what I originally drew for them 1 year ago. I have yet to be paid by my clients. I drink 50 gallons of coffee a day, I forgot what life is. My retinas are burning from staring at the computer monitor 120 hours a week. Excuse me while a throw myself out of a window.
@khashya786786 It's an economy problem. Nobody is building anything in the United States at a level to sustain new graduates and there is a glut of architects sitting on unemployment row. Put simply, a crew shift manager at Taco Bell is making more income than most architects waiting for their phone to ring. I'm serious. If drawing is your passion, do it, but don't expect to get paid for anything anytime soon.
Also look into Microprocessor Mask Design. Income is good and demand is slightly high
Hi , what's the difference between architecture and architectural engineering and what's the duration of study to get Bsc.for both of them , I am a chemical engineer but I want to convert to architecture and study again , what do u think has better career future and which one gets more salary chemical or architectural !!! I need a help because I am too confused to take a disicion about this since to many ppl encourage me to study Msc, and complete while I want to enroll in architecturing
I am a huge fan of yours for your mentoring videos
I am a Begining Architect I am set on that decision & I believe its what I want to be
Since you have 3 degrees, may I ask how long it took you to get them becuase I would like to recieve a Masters Degree because I plan on one day starting my own Design Firm (my dream)
yes architects can design chairs and furnitures because they understand ergonometric and anthropometrics too and most of all an architect is an artist.
@andups trust me, with the ammount of drawing you have to do you will get alot better very quickly. by the end of your first semester there will be nothing insufficient about your drawing style.
Great work, we are a designing company in Southern California and just took photo's of a new paver product coming out in 2011. It has a 3D effect and a unique star pattern. We are interested to find out if this paver application could be a potential seller in your area? Call LifeScape or comment on our youtube UrLifescape Channel, we are interested in your opinion. Thank you.
Architect is a person who build using archs, all constructions are using arch even the plain ones, chairs, tables, planes, bridges, dams all things... all people who build something is an architec, also most enginiers... the architect desing and calculate this contructions ovbiously for the achievment of some previous pourpouses or requirements which come from society or individuality needs. Ovbiously are architects who are specializated desiging houses though.
@theonelink to some money doesn't matter, some do it for the love, some for other reasons.. if you love it do it.. if you worry about the pay i understand..
that guy is doing a pretty easy project ive done some 10 times more difficult in my university, after every day of an architect your hand is cramped and you will want to soak it in ice and warm water
aspiring architects please take note: get a bachelor's in either mechanical or civil engineering first, and then go into architecture. That way you're guaranteed a job that involves a lot more design work that you'd think; AND you'll make more money sooner. In the meantime, you can get your M.Arch if you still think architecture is your true vocation. That's what I'm doing and though I'm still an undergrad, I already have a well paying job with an engineering firm.
hey.. really liked ur video.. I just took admission in a Under Graduate course in Architecture. ( bachelor of architecture, BESU, Shibpur, kolkata, India)... can u tell me about begginers textbooks, preferably on the net and preferably free? because the university press is yet to publish the Recommended Book List...
I need help deciding my career path... I'm 18 years old and have spent my entire LIFE, wanting to be an architect in many aspects of it. Landscape, Interior, & Construction. I've even taken classes for it in high school. I'm more of a sketcher and NOT a big fan of AutoCAD. In my opinion, it's too confusing, and sketching is more simple for me. But I want to know, as far as mathematics goes in Architecture, do you need to be a MATH GENIUS in order to be a licensed architect?
Nope, but you need to be able to think logically, need to have a skill with amounts, ratios, etc etc. And these are not at all independent from architectural thinking. I attended a special math class at high school, and at architectural school, I often found it difficult to explain quite obvious facts and correlations to those (both fellow students and teachers) who weren't thinking mathematically at all.
@WavieeAlex take an drawing course ... it's everything you need really... I've learn the basics of composition and then teachers started to like my projects... and btw: I realised that I need really steady hands for everything I do so I also searched for some exercises for "steady hands" around youtube and it helped me alot... you can learn them for people who do "domino art" ...
@WavieeAlex yes, you must practice the techniques and you will gain proficiency. Making many mistakes at first is common in any profession such as this. You will learn your own methods afterward and become more comfortable. You will see how practice pays off. It can be fun, for the rest of your life.
@WavieeAlex You certainly can, if you try hard and/or excel in other areas. I'm can't draw very well either, but I'm a good designer and model builder. Even though my drawings weren't great, my project in a design competition placed 2nd out of 150 entries. I'm still hoping to learn how to use computers to help me draw, but if this is something you really want to do, go for it!
I'm 14 and a senior in high school. My dream is to be an architect. My weakest point is Geometry. I get a 77 on my Report card. I'm an average student in Physics my grade is 87. I'm taking calculus this year(senior year) and I think it's easy.
Will I go okay on being an architect? I really, really suck at geometry. It's not interesting for me.
Manual sketching or drafting is more satisfying then just some mouse clicks on a CAD program.
But is it also possible for people from other engineering field who posses a great deal of creativity to enter the field of architecture? Because I am now a mechanical engineering student and I am getting more and more interested in the field of architecture and design in general.
Great video. I am 14 and am very interested in this subject. Though, every time I try to draw an idea(which looks really great in my head)...it ends up being messed on paper. But, I would not give up. Please specify what Subjects are you most likely to deeply study if you so decide to enter field?
Can anyone tell me why do architects often use large format printing to print their work? Isn't a normal a4 printer will suffice? Large format printer is expensive.
Hey, thank you so much for these videos, for years I have been trying to decide what I want to do with my future and until now I didn't know what to do. After I saw these videos I began sketching and now my friends tell me I'm fantastic! Thanks again and I hope that one day I'll be as good an architect as you are!

@RacerXGTO ..would you not recommend a career as an architect. I mean, is the there enough money in the job. And how about job demand ?
khashya786786 4 months ago
@khashya786786 It's an economy problem. Nobody is building anything in the United States at a level to sustain new graduates and there is a glut of architects sitting on unemployment row. Put simply, a crew shift manager at Taco Bell is making more income than most architects waiting for their phone to ring. I'm serious. If drawing is your passion, do it, but don't expect to get paid for anything anytime soon.
Also look into Microprocessor Mask Design. Income is good and demand is slightly high

yes architects can design chairs and furnitures because they understand ergonometric and anthropometrics too and most of all an architect is an artist.

Ovbiously are architects who are specializated desiging houses though.

aspiring architects please take note: get a bachelor's in either mechanical or civil engineering first, and then go into architecture. That way you're guaranteed a job that involves a lot more design work that you'd think; AND you'll make more money sooner. In the meantime, you can get your M.Arch if you still think architecture is your true vocation. That's what I'm doing and though I'm still an undergrad, I already have a well paying job with an engineering firm.
junorpheus 1 year ago
hey.. really liked ur video..

But I want to know, as far as mathematics goes in Architecture, do you need to be a MATH GENIUS in order to be a licensed architect?

kodoju 1 year ago
@neeneethequeen

TaylorWhites 1 year ago
@WavieeAlex it will be almost impossible
Xyinc 1 year ago
@WavieeAlex yes, you must practice the techniques and you will gain proficiency. Making many mistakes at first is common in any profession such as this. You will learn your own methods afterward and become more comfortable. You will see how practice pays off. It can be fun, for the rest of your life.
PetrusRuppert 1 year ago
