HI there! I lived in Perth Amboy all my life moved to Florida August of 1987. My dad use to have the Amboy Lunch Restaurant on Smith and Maple St! I ran across your video on that NYC tornado, It is rare to get tornadoes in NJ. In Florida we get big summer storms and many times we get small tornadoes too. I think you pointed your camera at the Victory Bridge RT35. When tornadoes occur/severe weather, storms move very fast! I belong to the NWS Skywarn. Nice Video! Paul
I can see why the news used your video..it's one of the best of this particular storm because you had the perfect vantage point. The other commenters are right though, you should have gone to the basement as soon as you saw the funnel cloud start to form...they aren't to be messed with.
i was alone at home i as 13 then, playing xbox live mw2 boom my window broke, turn on the tvTORNADO in BROOKLYN my mom was in mannhanten for the doctor my brother i did not know. i was by my self where the fucking tornado was
@barakakaron The reasons, I believe, for no tornado sirens during this event are the following: 1) This was only a brief funnel cloud descending from a wall cloud, not an actual tornado. 2) A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was in effect from NWS Mt. Holly NJ, not a Tornado Warning needed for sirens. Also, the damage done in Perth Amboy was from a microburst (which you can see approaching at the video's end). As to why New York City did not have sirens for their actual tornadoes, I'm not sure.
@NeartheCross Thank you for your input, however the National Weather Service seems perhaps, overactive in my area. Even when there is a chance of a "brief funnel cloud descending from a wall cloud" there is always a warning as to the possibility thereof. The difference between a funnel and a tornado, as I'm sure you know, is that the latter is merely a touching down to the ground of the former. Both emerge, typically, from a mesocyclone and damage isn't assessed until after the passing thereof.
@barakakaron True enough, I have heard of instances where sirens were activated for Severe Thunderstorm Warnings when a derecho passed through in both Wisconsin and Illinois, even without a tornado. In the Mt. Holly warning area, most of the damage from straight-line winds and microbursts tends to be much worse than from the tornadoes that form every year, so I guess sounding sirens is not considered important. I really wish they had a better system because of the population density.
Holy sh*t that was crazy. Definitely best video Ive seen since I've been trolling for pics of this summers twister. The cloud didnt touch down in your video, but that was clearly a funnel cloud and not just a bunch of wind and rain!
Nice footage. You have a nice high vantage point of the storm. This may be the only known actual video of that twister before it became rainwrapped. Thanks for sharing. I have video of the same storm as it passed over Fresh Meadows Queens and hit my building.
What is also neat about this video is the view of the microburst approaching at the end, it looks like a giant wall of rain. This storm goes on to produce another funnel cloud on Staten Island. The actual Brooklyn (EF0) and Queens (EF1) tornadoes form from the northern section of the squall line which had a seperate rotating cell embedded in it. The extremely rare macroburst, which hit Queens county, was actually stronger (125 mph winds) than both of the tornadoes.
HI. Congratulations. Believe it or not, I saw your video on Facebook! A 'friend' posted it there. I think you're the only person that captured a funnel from that storm system. I know many storm chasers who video'd the storm but never saw a funnel like you have captured :-)
Its unfortunate that this video doesn't have more views. It is the only one I've seen that clearly shows one of the two tornadoes. All the talk is over on the one that just shows the winds from the microburst going through, NOT the tornado.
yea i live in staten island and was able to see it in the verazzano area. it was just amazing to be able to witness it. when i first heard that there was a tornado warning, i was shocked and excited :)
OMG i can see my house from here ! i was at work wen this was happening . i work in metuchen so it didnt hit us there. my sis called me screaming telling me this had happen . i didnt think it was that serious till i got home n saw alot of things distroyed . my nieghbors door flew off ! and a piece of my garage roof came off. @stompysharpNpointy - lol it be whimpy but the east coast never seen anything like this before so its new to the ppl over here... n let me remind you im from the midwest.. Chicago, il okay.. n let me tell you of all the yrs i lived there never seen anything like that near the city. =)
@angelicamaria21 Well, it does happen in these parts more often than one would think, although they seem more common in central and western NY (and occasionally the upstate NY area around Albany) as well as in MA. Back on May 31, 1998 we had a large tornado (F3, IIRC with 200MPH winds) go through Mechanicville, NY and Stillwater, NY which did a great amount of damage. An even larger F4 tornado hit Great Barrington, MA in 1995 (winds >207MPH)
Thank you everyone for all ur feed back.. this is what started in NJ and ended up in NYC..
@gundrag000 - i didnt delete any sound it was just that when i would zoom in n zoom out the sound would get cut off.. my camera is stupid sometimes.. lol
Absolutely amazing footage! Can you even believe you're the only who caught a funnel on camera?? This is incredible. There was a whole lotta weather going on, that's for sure -- we were watching it zip by at a zillion miles an hour through our office window at the South St Seaport. I felt bad for the people who left their laundry out to "dry" on the fire escapes :-)
love the video! i wonder if that was the tornado/storm that hit us in brooklyn.
(& for the people saying it wasn't a tornado, NWS came here to NY and confirmed that it was infact an f1 tornado. although we didn't have a visible funnel.)
@officialenvy - yes... this was the same storm... this video catches the birth of the microburst and associated tornado development... which minutes later crossed the harbor and into Brooklyn.
You did a great job! I work in Emergency Management in Florida. That one cloud you see swirling around is called a wall cloud a forwarning of a tornado. If you watch your video carefully you can see two funnels one of them did touch down. Look at the ground you can see the debris. This is the best vid of the storm. You did good! :-)
2 Tornados and a Microburst in NYC. An EF0, EF1, and a 125 MPH Microburst. 3 Tornadoes so far this year. I will call NYC the Tornado City at this rate.
@angelicamaria21 i would agree, and you sell to news stations? since could made good batch of money there. only one to get video, and jealous you saw this.
@angelicamaria21 Well, welcome to the world of copyright theft on YT. Happens quite a lot. Hurricane and tornado footage often get copied. Some taking credit, some just copy it to use as attraction to their own videos. Some even have ads that they make money on.
If you see you footage anywhere (not just YT) you didn't give permission, bill them! You can basically charge what you want. Some buddies have been able to collect up to $150 per second of stolen video (after suing).
@angelicamaria21 Yup , same thing happened to me for the same storm. I posted a video of the same storm as it hit Queens NY. and some douche pirated my video and tried to pass it off as his. Then when I confronted him about it, he had me blocked from commenting on his page . hahaha.. O well ! Nice video !
and really i dont get this only one person youtube filmed the tornado in nj that hasnt happened in centuries im surprised only one person has actual fottage from this
@madrigal212 thats because you could only see the cloud forming if you were really high up, and if you werent then it came with a 10 second warning.....most people ran inside instead of running to a camera
@angelicamaria21 is that bridge on the parkway? i was driving home on the parkway yesterday and hit the very beginning of it....when i was on the twin bridges...it was terrible!
At 3:04 I think it just becomes obscured by the rain and hail cloud, rather than dissipating. I think it probably continued and strengthened as it moved across Staten Island and the Upper Bay towards the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, Park Slope, Bed-Stuy, Bushwick, Ridgewood and Middle Village, probably dissipating near Corona, Queens. It also looks like there may be multiple vortices?
Thank you!!! You saved us from the ignominy of having the storm labeled as a silly little microburst! It's amazing that you kept filming long enough to catch the tornado forming. Glad you enjoyed your peek at Mother Nature in action. You were one of the few to see a funnel, and probably yours is the only video.
hahah. you were really funny! wow, that was some incredible footage you got there! little did you know what you were going to capture. thanks for posting it!
Amazing i and other in a lifetime would never have seen something this amazing!!To you just another storm to us this is such a big deal!!Please sell to universities so we can study this amazing fete of Nature!! You are so Lucky!! I live on NewBrunswick Ave and was at the corner where red brick building is at(lower/middle/video) and seen it Forming..Be wise about this video and dont just give it 2 any1.you have a goldmine here and should imiedaitely copyright it!!
Do you Realize What You have Here!!?? Many Scientist Have Dreamed of Seeing FiLm of A front/wall forming(birth) of a funnel..AMAZING VIDEO!! I nor Has Any1 that studies Weather has seen this!! Heard about it but never seen in it..In other Words they Sky was on Perth Amboy and we were in the funnel..This Video will Make you rich!!From Universities to Scientist will pay for studies!!Never in the World has this be seen!! Congrats Your officially the 1st with actual footage..
@jay08861 --- Had Angelica sold the video directly to a media company or copyrighted her work, she would be entitled to royalties. However, she forfeited any monies and involuntarily granted Youtube/Google "...a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable and transferable license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the Content in connection with the Service and YouTube's..."
damn. Great vid, finally some actual footage of the tornado. I saw that coming, in Brooklyn, as I boldly stated "gee that looks like a tornado, but there's no way in hell we are going to get hit by a tornado." Then it hit the building like a truck. Exciting!
Great video. You should offer to sell it to the news media in case they don't have any good footage of the funnel cloud forming. Or maybe give it to a university for study.
@GUGEntertainment oh so you live on high st. thats cool. my apartment faces high st n market st. n i was down there earlier looking at all the damage around there.
was driving 9 route south when literally day turned nigth heavy downpour you couldn't see more that 10 ft away and lightening seen everywhere ......checked really my TWC app in my iphone and there it was a tornado warning for ocean and monmouth counties and we were driving trough howell ...common border of both counties.....yeah it was scary very strange strom but never saw the funnel cloud ....no need for it that was enough
@jamespohn lol yea i dont know what made me say a typhoon cloud.. i was shocked that was the first thing that came to me.. lol what i meant was a funnel cloud..
I've always wanted to see the view from that building

You were one of the few to see a funnel, and probably yours is the only video.

damn. Great vid, finally some actual footage of the tornado. I saw that coming, in Brooklyn, as I boldly stated "gee that looks like a tornado, but there's no way in hell we are going to get hit by a tornado." Then it hit the building like a truck. Exciting!
Thanks for posting this.

Great video. You should offer to sell it to the news media in case they don't have any good footage of the funnel cloud forming. Or maybe give it to a university for study.
