Wes Montgomery was, and still is, greatly unrecognized and underappreciated as the great genius guitar player he was. Many, including greats like George Benson, have since got ideas from him. He was one of the great self-taught guitarists as was another great Stevie Ray Vaughn. If anyone really wants to get into Wes I suggest listening to "Bumpin" and "Bumpin On Sunset"
I have always loved the arrangements on some of Wes's albums and if Mr Keepnews had a hand in it then he has true talent!
Lenny Breau! A great genius! Like Wes Montgomery, but never got big sadly, he influenced so many jazz guitarists, for he also did something on the guitar that no one could do or even knew was possible.
Wes Montgomery is a one of a kind guitar player! He blows me away! But also, I find Orrin's comments interesting... this was back when producers actually knew something about music.
Oops! Looks like we BOTH spelled it wrong. In the name of jazz I'll let you figure out the rest of it though. I was only teasing any way, no need to be pedantic!
@Xelanderthomas It's ironic that the three greatest guitarists - Montgomery, Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt - had little or no formal training. Most of them learned by baptism of fire and became the most influential guitarists of their generation.
I was about eighteen when I first heard Wes ...`The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery`....and at the first listening I wasn`t so sure about his music because he didn`t sound anything like Barney Kessel...but pretty soon I got it ...and realised what Jazz Music really is... I have over the years bought about four copies of this album...and I still can`t hear it enough... fifty years later...Wes was more than incredible..(WORD)..!!
I never realized how incredible his chordal arrangementswere, when backing up the other members in the group. Truly genius musician...so much emtion and expression. Some of his performances are reminiscent of the great Johnny Smith. I wonder if Johnny had any influence on Wes? Anyone have an idea about that? Thanks
Yes 'I've Griwn accustomed to her face' is great. In fact the entire CD its on 'Plays For Lovers' is unbelievable...with collaborations with his brothers and George Shearing too!. What a FANTASTIC CD...gives you chills!
Curse you, JazzVideoGuy! Before this video was even over, I had to order the trio album, Smokin at the Half Note, and Incredible Jazz Guitar (already had Full House). Good thing for me I'm crazy for this stuff!!!!!
Thanks Bret for this and the other videos . It is so great to have your work on the net where the young people can see the history of this fantastic music.
After my brother and I were turned on to Wes in 1960 by Garland Tiger-a guitarist supreme, of Ft. Worth CELLAR days- well, no point in listening to anyone else- Nobody's cut Wes yet!
Orrin Keepnews was as big a name to us as any musician---we poured over those liner notes & small b&w photos...the grooves were solidly worn off the Lps--- and just look at the lineup of artists.. Evans, Adderly... those strings of Riverside LP hits.....All Incredible! Thanks for posting- totally killer!
Absolutely magnificent, please keep this on, one of my favorite guitar players, danced a lot to his music in modern dance class at Tenn State. Beautiful memories, thanks!

Wes didn't go to school so he played unlike anyone who came out of school.
Now they're teaching Wes Montgomery in all the schools - go figure.
Things that you can do on your own are pretty amazing...

Great line by Orrin about Wes (paraphrased)
Things that you were not supposed to be able to do on a guitar...that he did because he didn't know that you were'nt supposed to be able to do them.
There's a great lesson here. How much do we limit ourselves because were are told that it's not possible.
