I died at 2.05 mins - very very poor reading of the greatest German. Ah the God is Dead idea again - exclaimed by a Madman wasn't it? Because only a Madman could believe he could kill God. Analyse the writings of Nietzsch 'A' and you will discover repeated references to the oversoul and higher intuition. The text in question was, in my humble estimation, aimed at killing organised religion, Christianity - to free the oversoul/god from the enslavement of religious dogma.
WOW, this is less of a misinterpretation and more of a gross misunderstanding! This is nearly the opposite of what Nietzsche is about. Most people don't have the capacity of language to penetrate the core of Nietzsche's philosophy. This is a film about badly acted pretentious kids babbling about things beyond their understanding.
This is the biggest load of shit I've ever seen. Pretentious nonsense, and a poor interpretation of Nietzsche to boot. Go back and read Zarathustra again.
The world is not fucked up. People are. And they are because they are constantly following their interest. Using various methods, based on their genetic makeover, and their environment which nurtured and trained behaviors and mentalities, every human has the tendency to think that everything is for him. Not that he needs everything, which is the truth. Making the human, a hypocritical and shameless creature. His instinct lies at the core, and his complexity is going against him, it seems.
This is BY FAR the worst short film I have ever seen... an inaccurate, bogus interpretation of Friedrich Nietzsche writings... I can't believe this piece of shit film actually exists! Some people actually took the time and wrote, filmed + directed this? Unbelievable...
"One must stretch out one's hands and attempt to grasp this amazing subtlety, that the value of life cannot be estimated. Not by the living, for they are an interested party, even a bone of contention, and not impartial judges; not by the dead, for a different reason. For a philosopher to object [aim] to putting a value on life is an objection others make against him, a question mark concerning his wisdom, an un-wisdom." Twilight of the Idols
It soulds more like Schopenhauer's philosophy has been substituted for Nietzsche's. But I quite like the Tarantino sytle discussion on philosophy. Nietzsche did write:
Not to this torture-stake was I tied, that I know man is bad...
and
Nothing is beautiful, only man: on this piece of naivete rests all aesthetics, it is the first truth of aesthetics. Let us immediately add its second: nothing is ugly but degenerate man -- the domain of aesthetic judgment is therewith defined.
this vid is all wrong. i think he misinterpreted neitzche as well, who was pessemistic about the current course of human society, but was overall an affirmer of life, a "yes-sayer"
uh nietzsche wasn't writing at a time of prosperity. he grew up during the napoleonic wars and bismarck's reign. furthermore, he suffered from a number of diseases, was extremely lonely, and died in a state of insanity. AND FURTHERMORE, despite all this he still thought man was great and worthy of being embraced.
How could you make this video? Of all the people slandering Nietzsche, it shouldn't be those who have actually read him. Assuming you read the book you cite.
Assuming that's true, you are one more example of an amateur reader boosting lies about a man whose words must be taken seriously. An existentialist? Who thought men were inherently despicable? A maniac?
.... A NIHILIST?
Have I stumbled into a Kissinger bio narrated by a dickweed college student trying out buzzwords for the first time?
Nietzsche was not really an existentialist; existentialism presupposes a fully autonomous agent within a structureless, chaotic world. Nietzsche was more of a prototypical poststructuralist in that he acknowledged the social construction of identity.
If you actuall read The Gay Science, you would know that about 50% of the book is engaged in a continual discussion of living well and tailoring moral identity to one's own experience in order to live a life of beauty and purpose, but whatever.
Thirdly, Nietzsche did not believe that man's "sole purpose is to create chaos etc"... He didn't believe in an objective purpose. Fourthly, "Sartre and his comrades" did not have "a low opinion of men". Fifthly, Hobbes' views on human nature are just ridiculous. Sixth, the Gay Science is not really a seminal work. In fact, not a single line of this video is particularly informed. Every line of attempted Kevin Smith-style humour is also a mistake. In fact, the whole video is.
Since i'm avoiding revising this exact subject, I think i'll point out every error. Firstly, it's not a dead divinity. When Nietzsche says "God is Dead', he means that the idea of God is so unconvincing that his existence is, or soon will be, accepted by nobody but the 'herd men'. Secondly, Nietzsche did not believe that man was an inherently dispicable creature. He believed that the proliferation of Christianity and morality had led to man becoming a "shrunken herd animal".
Badly acted, misinformed and pretentious. If this was informative or interesting, perhaps I could overlook the ridiculously contrived and excessively crude dialogue. This was clearly conceived and produced by someone with minimal knowledge of continental philosophy who mistakenly believes himself to be extremely educated in this subject. When the titular subject of the film's name is mispronounced, you know it can't be good.

Well Mr Riot, your argument is strong, what are the chances of two chemicals colliding, OK so one may have gravity to assist the collision, but in the castness of space, the spirit that controols space time bought the chemicals together and that created the big bang, the chain reaction that created enough matter to form life. The rest can be found in the book of Genesis.
Denying the almighty, tyrany reigns, but true man acts on his own self interes, also it can be very difficult to live with a genius. However this Nietzsche seems to deny the idea of divinity, well without divinity he wouldn't be able to because he wouldn't be alive. The scientific proof of devinity is "Who started the first chemical reaction" this baffled one of my teachers.
This was entertaing, but your take on Nietzsche is grossly exaggerated, based on a nihilistic approach. A total Leopold and Loeb interpretation. Nietzsche was for total freedom and personal growth. unfortunately not all men have the strength to cross over and why try to teach this old dogma new tricks what you cant teach to fly push to fall faster
a. Nietzsche was an existentialist Avent La letre (before the term existed)
b. NIETZSCHE WAS NOT A PESSIMISTIC EXISTENTIALIST!!! He was an extremely positive existentialist. Yes he though the world lacked structure but he also held that we have the power to mold it, to shape it according to our will. He discusses the abyss in Gay science but in his later works he shouws how the abyss is just the canvass for the overman.
bravo trying to understand Nietzsche... all though feeble Nietzsche believed in extreme ascetics which is the most optimistic outlook you can have in life i think, so read a bit more guys and make a new vid with the right interp.
What is this? Who are these people? Why are they talking about this and why is the guy in the black suit such an ass? And then why does he kill. Talk about no order or structure, that's what this movie is. Direction, acting, editing and story are terrible.
You would think that any movie based about someone would learn to pronounce it right.
People like this ruin Nietzsche and everything he represents i would rather people (these two guys) not talk about what he says when they misinterpret, distort, and make this pseudo-intellectual film.
You people kill me. How about you actually read Nietzsche, preferably Human All Too Human, Daybreak, or The Gay Science and find out for yourself how Nietzsche wasn't pessimistic?
In Ecce Homo, Nietzsche himself says his philosophy is one of optimism. Existentialism is a ultimately an optimistic philosophy once you've gotten over the initial pessimistic barrier of realizing there is no inherent meaning in life. That there is no inherent meaning or morality gives us total freedom to do whatever we desire. That is the optimism of existentialism.
2. There is almost no mountains in Denmark (i am from Norway i know that). The whole frigging nation is flat like Holland.
3. Nietzsche were far away from being pessimistic. 99% of what they are saying is general bullshit and ignorance!
This is pretentious! Like everyone else said this is readings works upside down. And why the hell are this moron calling Søren for nothing? Søren Kierkegaard were an extra-ordinary philosopher.
They kind of underemphasized what I see as Nietzsche's underlying idealism, which is for individuals to reject facades of morality and nihilism itself. They just described the groundwork for his more assertive ideas.
Bullshit, Schopenhaur is the first modern pessimist, Nietzsche is a life afirming fatalist, he didn't see man only as a disgusting reature, but also someone capable of creation. Remeber, the economy of the whole, think beyond good and evil
Eh, good dramatic tension but I don't think Nietzsche would be happy if he thought that everything he ever wrote could be summed up in a YouTube video.
They actually don't have Nietzsche right. They view him as far more nihilistic than he actually is. That said the idea that there is no inherent order or structure to the universe is true. What Nietzsche did is tare down previous absolutist views because they weren't right. Then he said be a freethinker! Figure shit out for yourself.
P.S. Hobbes was only good in the first section of Leviathan. The rest is just crap about forcing people to conform to some catholic hierarchy.
The country is flat with little elevation; having an average height above sea level of only 31 metres (102 ft) and the highest natural point is Møllehøj, at 170.86 metres (560.56 ft).
you guys fuckin suck. you know nothing about nietzsche. if you listen closely while you watch this video you can hear nietzsche turning in his grave in the background. dicks.
basically, most of what you have said about this touurmented man Nietzche is wrong. he believed that man could overcome nihilism (and religion is also nihilistic according to him) So come on! don't blatently twist what he was saying
Nietzsche wasn't an 'existentialist', if your going to talk out of your ass, at least get your facts straight. O, and dip-shits, he wasn't a 'pessimist' either. If you at least read a smidgen of his philosophy you would know that his works very optimistic and an antithesis to the pessimist philosopher Schopenhauer who he found fault with.
In short, Columbine kids should never read works that require some intellect to decipher.
Good video, but i don't think there such things as essential readings when it comes to philosophy; interesting as Hobbes is. By the way, why do Americans always call him "Nee-chee"?
Moreover, the reason people find his "teachings" completely absurd is because moral standards are ingrained in our brains from youth until it dominates our consciousness. But luckily, nothing can alter man's unconscious will, which is what Nietzsche became so enthralled with. Which is why it's not really necessary to read his works, because they just reflect you in your true form.
They make an interesting summary of Nietzsche's work but I don't think it reflects the exact perception Nietzsche had about his own work. For one, I wouldn't consider him pessimistic about man's outlook, if anything, he acknowledged that life would continue "evolving" to become stronger and stronger, perpetually overcoming the limitations of their environment.
So much for mountains. How the Hell did this crappy thing get an IMDb listing? If this is a student film, the bad acting and character interaction is forgivable, but the desperate attempt to sound intelligent is not.
I specially loved the part about "danish sitting around they're snowy ass montains(...)". If this guy knows just as much about Nietzsche as he knows about geography I think I try another source on this topic.
It's lame that you pronounce Nietzsche's name incorrectly throughout this entire video. The Gay Science is not his seminal work, Thus Spoke Zarathustra is. He's not a pessimist, his project is to transcend nihilism.
That's not true at all, I have the book you're talking about and you've completely and outrightly misquoted him when he's making interpretations on the work and your making the implication we should take his interpretation with the same level of objectivity as his translations. Besides, I rarely read his footnotes so, if he's a good translator and the problems lie in the footnotes, then there's no problem is there?
In some books, the aphorism approach was definitely there...The Gay Science being the big one, but it was hardly a universal with Nietzsche. Not to mention that appropriation of a philosophy by "the herd" of sorts doesn't negate the value of that philosophy one bit. The fact the Nietzsche was undeniably among the most major influences in such greats as Heidegger, Hesse, Sartre, Derrida and many others far from the "post MTV culture" would run contrary to what you're saying.
How do you mean served himself in fastfood form? I've spent a lot of time reading philosophical works from Plato to Derrida, and while Nietzsche's work wasn't as oblique as, say, Heidegger's Being and Time, I've seen little to place it as a "fast-food" form of philosophy. Indeed Beyond Good and Evil was one of the most in depth books I've ever read.
Tries to manipulate it? In what way? I've read countless translations of Nietzsche and non (save perhaps Hollingdale) come close to Kauffmann...you hardly need Kauffmann to show Nietzsche distrust and outright dislike of anti-semitic thought.
one more important note, Nietzsche lived during a time where German pride was at its highest. Nearly all of his contemporaries were anti-semitic. Once again, Nietzsche broke from Richard Wagner because Wagner was a strong anti-semite. Just read the letter from Nietzsche to his sister Elizabeth, denouncing her decisions to marry an anti-semite and become one.
Nietzsche's philosophy discourages equality, but only in regards to religion. Nietzsche treats humans as unique, self-interested, and intelligent beings.Only through one's unique and insatiable will, can they ever attain full meaning in life. He denounces the notion of equality because of its oppressive will-inhibiting nature. This is one of the reasons he was highly critical of religion, namely, Christianity.
There is no question that there is racism in The Genealogy of Morals, Nietzsche criticizes non-Aryans as primitive, but never makes the assertion that Jewish people are in any way bad. I challenge you to provide specific examples of Nietzsche's anti-semitism, which will be impossible.
The only reason that Nietzsche was/is associated with anti-Semitism is because his fucked-up sister associated his works, posthumously, with the Nazi cause. Nietzsche was quite egalitarian and espoused views that run contrary to any movement of oppression.
very good film! I was totally hooked! Since everybody's got an opinion on Nietzsche, I better put mine in. Nietzsche felt humanity was fucked up because of 2000 years of Christian doctrine curupting the mind. Humanity must rise above slave morality and live as masters by becoming the Superman. The Superman is not genetic, but the synthesis of strengh.
dgggd, you're a moron. If you actually knew what you were talking about, you would know that Nietzsche strongly denounced anti-semitism.He separated from Wagner, because Wagner was an antisemite.Nietzsche's overman had nothing at all to do with Hitler's fucked up ideology.
...You completely misunderstand Nietzsche, in every possible manner. Nietzsche attacked modern morality as the sole cause of spiritual and intellectual decadance. Have you even read his writings, or did you just skim through some SparkNotes, and draw your conclusions from that source? Also, the quote 'God is dead' does not imply the absence of God, but modern Christianity destroying God's supposed essence.
Too bad this video has become a pissing contest for people on Nitzsche's ideas; it's just a video for entertainment, people.
This is great guys, on so many levels. You can watch is seriously and look for something deep, or you can treat it like a comedy and the ending then becomes hilarious.
Lastly, you guys are speaking English, not German, so would everyone STFU about mispronouncing Nietzsche's name? Thank you.
Nice take on F.N. What I liked about him is that under all his seemingly negative views about human beings, there was this underlying positive message that through enjoying life to the fullest, we really could "get it right."
...everyone who is saying "you left this and that out" should make their own video. I can't stand whiners. And wimps they are to throw stones from behind a keyboard and mouse.
There is a difference between sitting behind a desk and reading, possibly studying the literature and making pretentious accusations and totally misappropriating the line of thinking Nietzsche presupposed. I cant stand whiners either, but i cant stand falsity and pretension more. N is to frequently misunderstood.
Nietzsche was the first Secular-Darwinist. He never said humans were despicable, but mislead by the pity of Christianity and our elimination of Natural-Selection.
I'm not a fan of elitism, primarily because it provides a platform for the weak to pose as strong... Nevertheless, elitism exists amongst 'weak' people, who read books and think they are thus better than everyone else, ironically, the latent pretentiousness in this video. The perspective is growing on me, that a complacently critical attitude in philosophical enquiry is what produces glib 'critiques' of great thinkers like Hegel and Nietzsche from wholly unworthy people...

Yes he though the world lacked structure but he also held that we have the power to mold it, to shape it according to our will. He discusses the abyss in Gay science but in his later works he shouws how the abyss is just the canvass for the overman.

You would think that any movie based about someone would learn to pronounce it right.

At Raccoon2006:
1. Irrelevent. Who cares?
2. It was an expression, an hyperbole. It wasn't suppose to be taken seriously.
3. How was Nietzche not pessimistic? Explain that to me.
drewthedude 3 years ago
You people kill me. How about you actually read Nietzsche, preferably Human All Too Human, Daybreak, or The Gay Science and find out for yourself how Nietzsche wasn't pessimistic?
TheElyrian 3 years ago 2
In Ecce Homo, Nietzsche himself says his philosophy is one of optimism. Existentialism is a ultimately an optimistic philosophy once you've gotten over the initial pessimistic barrier of realizing there is no inherent meaning in life. That there is no inherent meaning or morality gives us total freedom to do whatever we desire. That is the optimism of existentialism.

Bullshit, Schopenhaur is the first modern pessimist, Nietzsche is a life afirming fatalist, he didn't see man only as a disgusting reature, but also someone capable of creation. Remeber, the economy of the whole, think beyond good and evil
figocooldude 3 years ago
Eh, good dramatic tension but I don't think Nietzsche would be happy if he thought that everything he ever wrote could be summed up in a YouTube video.
riethc 4 years ago
They actually don't have Nietzsche right. They view him as far more nihilistic than he actually is. That said the idea that there is no inherent order or structure to the universe is true. What Nietzsche did is tare down previous absolutist views because they weren't right. Then he said be a freethinker! Figure shit out for yourself.
P.S. Hobbes was only good in the first section of Leviathan. The rest is just crap about forcing people to conform to some catholic hierarchy.

Krowsnose 4 years ago
They make an interesting summary of Nietzsche's work but I don't think it reflects the exact perception Nietzsche had about his own work. For one, I wouldn't consider him pessimistic about man's outlook, if anything, he acknowledged that life would continue "evolving" to become stronger and stronger, perpetually overcoming the limitations of their environment.

Friedrich Nietzsche.

Sartre was born five years after Nietzsche died...I hardly think that qualifies him as "living almost 100 years later".
figureground 4 years ago
It's lame that you pronounce Nietzsche's name incorrectly throughout this entire video. The Gay Science is not his seminal work, Thus Spoke Zarathustra is. He's not a pessimist, his project is to transcend nihilism.
wolfgang1005 4 years ago
That's not true at all, I have the book you're talking about and you've completely and outrightly misquoted him when he's making interpretations on the work and your making the implication we should take his interpretation with the same level of objectivity as his translations. Besides, I rarely read his footnotes so, if he's a good translator and the problems lie in the footnotes, then there's no problem is there?
ZarathustrasCrown 4 years ago
In some books, the aphorism approach was definitely there...The Gay Science being the big one, but it was hardly a universal with Nietzsche. Not to mention that appropriation of a philosophy by "the herd" of sorts doesn't negate the value of that philosophy one bit. The fact the Nietzsche was undeniably among the most major influences in such greats as Heidegger, Hesse, Sartre, Derrida and many others far from the "post MTV culture" would run contrary to what you're saying.
ZarathustrasCrown 4 years ago
How do you mean served himself in fastfood form? I've spent a lot of time reading philosophical works from Plato to Derrida, and while Nietzsche's work wasn't as oblique as, say, Heidegger's Being and Time, I've seen little to place it as a "fast-food" form of philosophy. Indeed Beyond Good and Evil was one of the most in depth books I've ever read.
ZarathustrasCrown 4 years ago
Tries to manipulate it? In what way? I've read countless translations of Nietzsche and non (save perhaps Hollingdale) come close to Kauffmann...you hardly need Kauffmann to show Nietzsche distrust and outright dislike of anti-semitic thought.
ZarathustrasCrown 4 years ago
Marx, Engels, and G.W.F Hegel were all German.
goto2167 4 years ago
Karl Marx and Frederick Engels will own Nietzsche any day
maybe you should read some G.W.F Hegel (oh but wait i thought danes where invalid)
partilov1 4 years ago
one more important note, Nietzsche lived during a time where German pride was at its highest. Nearly all of his contemporaries were anti-semitic. Once again, Nietzsche broke from Richard Wagner because Wagner was a strong anti-semite. Just read the letter from Nietzsche to his sister Elizabeth, denouncing her decisions to marry an anti-semite and become one.
goto2167 4 years ago
Nietzsche's philosophy discourages equality, but only in regards to religion. Nietzsche treats humans as unique, self-interested, and intelligent beings.Only through one's unique and insatiable will, can they ever attain full meaning in life. He denounces the notion of equality because of its oppressive will-inhibiting nature. This is one of the reasons he was highly critical of religion, namely, Christianity.
goto2167 4 years ago
There is no question that there is racism in The Genealogy of Morals, Nietzsche criticizes non-Aryans as primitive, but never makes the assertion that Jewish people are in any way bad. I challenge you to provide specific examples of Nietzsche's anti-semitism, which will be impossible.
goto2167 4 years ago
The only reason that Nietzsche was/is associated with anti-Semitism is because his fucked-up sister associated his works, posthumously, with the Nazi cause. Nietzsche was quite egalitarian and espoused views that run contrary to any movement of oppression.
gchris07 4 years ago
very good film! I was totally hooked! Since everybody's got an opinion on Nietzsche, I better put mine in. Nietzsche felt humanity was fucked up because of 2000 years of Christian doctrine curupting the mind. Humanity must rise above slave morality and live as masters by becoming the Superman. The Superman is not genetic, but the synthesis of strengh.
alfredtheturk 4 years ago
idiot, they are just funny. Superman is the one who overcome human itself. Did Hitler overcome any of human itself?
purpleiris 4 years ago
dgggd, you're a moron. If you actually knew what you were talking about, you would know that Nietzsche strongly denounced anti-semitism.He separated from Wagner, because Wagner was an antisemite.Nietzsche's overman had nothing at all to do with Hitler's fucked up ideology.
goto2167 4 years ago
Nietzsche! Gesundheit!
klabotr 4 years ago
...You completely misunderstand Nietzsche, in every possible manner.
NietzscheanDisdain 4 years ago
You moron, not modern Christianity. All christianity. And early christianity was most harmfull of all its existence, according to Nietzsche.

This is great guys, on so many levels. You can watch is seriously and look for something deep, or you can treat it like a comedy and the ending then becomes hilarious.
Lastly, you guys are speaking English, not German, so would everyone STFU about mispronouncing Nietzsche's name? Thank you.
hazer451 4 years ago
Nice take on F.N. What I liked about him is that under all his seemingly negative views about human beings, there was this underlying positive message that through enjoying life to the fullest, we really could "get it right."
...everyone who is saying "you left this and that out" should make their own video. I can't stand whiners. And wimps they are to throw stones from behind a keyboard and mouse.

There is a difference between sitting behind a desk and reading, possibly studying the literature and making pretentious accusations and totally misappropriating the line of thinking Nietzsche presupposed.
