  • Thanks for the video man I went ahead and added two usb ports to the back of my unit since I have the old FAT model with 4 up front... I love how the mod turned out... I now have the ps eye and my charging dock hooked up to the back... the wiring looks so much better

  • My question is. The usb ports seem to be shot. From the board and not the actually ports so no like just replacing. Is there a way to reroute the power from further up the board to the usb ports to give power again

  • Wow

  • Ima end up buying i new ps3 if i did this. besides, there are like tons of other usb ports in my house

  • only one problem with this vid at no point does it tell you to remove the thermal compound and apply new stuff... if you don't do that it is just a YLOD waiting to happen

  • @Bonznumber1 if you plan on modding your ps3 and don't know to replace the thermal compound then you have no business modding period

  • @aaronfletcha just saying videos lie this should so everything cause some idiot will do it and come screaming... also some ppl forget. also way to reply to a pot that is a year old

  • i wouldnt ever do ps3 surgery! it would neve live again ( yes its alive now)

  • Sony should have 4 usb ports on the front and 2 on the back for peripherals like the eye and mic charger

  • i dont have the balls to do that

  • thanks man im postin what i did using this video very usefull.

  • i used this to put a usb on the inside of my ps3 and then hooked up 2 led lights to the other end of the usb i cut and wired in then made a thin pattern for the lights cut a hole on the inside sheeth the outer case with the ps3 logo on it is kinda see through so i didnt need to cut that covered the top of the cd drive with foil to help reflect the light ( thats where the lights went) put it together and whalla i now have a glowing pot leaf on the side of my ps3 every time i turn it on

  • where do u get this ribbon from ??????

  • what are they classifying the "main ribbon" all four of my usb ports on my 60 gb ps3 stopped working so i'm going to try this . but i dont know which ribbon is the "main ribbon !... jeez i already had to reflow the gpu and cpu , now this

  • I bought a multiple 4 usb slots for £1 from poundworld and it only uses one slot and gives three extra. Does any one know where you can mod ps3 or get free games from somewhere?

  • Buy a multiple USB connected they r like 20 dollars

  • why not just plug it into the front i dont see the reason for puttin it in the back

  • why do people laugh out loud at things that r not even funny?

  • Hell yeah im doing this first i gotta remove my warranty sticker than fuck with my ps3 for a Usb port!! this is soooo worth it

  • LOL i bet when everyone saw the first step "REMOVE THE WARRANTY STICKER", everyone was like "FUCK THAT"

  • why i dont have warranty anymore. but i wont do that cuz it aint worth it. at least not for me.

  • lol remove the waranty sticker

  • lol, u never show me the reassembly steps. Now im having problems putting the, components n parts back to my ps3 ?:(Help plz. Btw add me=wazien3034life

  • it would be better if it was on video. Slide shows are hard to understand. With video you can take off the sound if you don't wanna talk.

  • cool but I would never do that to my ps3

  • All this for a USB port in the back ROFL waste of time

  • Is there a way I can play sounds from the computer directly into the PS3 through the microphone feature? I'd like to know please.

  • i agree with linkpluss, that would be cool...

although i think its actully the blu ray drive which

should be changed as it is only 2X.(i think)

  • Yeah man, would be so cool!!!

With one exception: --- It's impossible.

Games are hardcoded to work with the stock system specifications, so even though you'd manage to add more virtual memory(which i hardly doubt ever will be possible) no significant change in performance would occur.

  • All this for an extra USB port on the back lol Well, I suppose of you know what your doing :) Too scared to open mine, it's the 60gb :)

  • i hate the fuckin fan makes so much noise

  • Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to intricate for just one extra usb port 2 maybe but just 1? no way still I'll give you props for figuring all that stuff out

  • I should try this some time.

  • i have a ps3

  • Pretty impressive - pure talent with an added exclamation mark !

  • But warranty void

  • was there alot of dust inside.i wonder if i better clean it sometimes?

  • Yes there was tons of dust in there. I live in an old 1950's house and our ducting is pretty shabby, so we get a-lot of our dust in the form of that grey blown-in insulation. Not a bad idea to clean out the PS3 every once in awhile.

JUST STAY GROUNDED WHEN YOU TAKE IT APART!

  • @MacSolidWorks why to take it apart ?

you can use that by closing the power prising the eject butten and then open it in fat or remove the plug presse and hold the eject butten wile putting the plug in that is better and eassier

  • someone here has it ???

  • ok, thanks anyway...

  • can u please upload the song of the video because i can't find it !! :)

  • Sorry, I don't know where to get it. It came on my mp3 player when I got it.

The mp3 player won't allow me to remove it from the player...copyright issues I guess. It was free so who's complaining?

  • UPDATE DAY 3(last day):

The mod is finished, I now own the only PS3 in the world with SIX working USB ports, four in front and two in the rear!!!

Steve and I worked all night Friday and into the morning on Saturday to complete it, but we finally figured out a really nasty problem we were struggling with and got it all put back together!

I'll be working on the new video for the next few days so be patient, it's coming.

  • ill pay you to mod mine!

  • You couldn't afford it;)

  • UPDATE DAY 2:

Today was spent cutting traces on the PS3 motherboard, prepping the USB hub controller board, and mock-up of the PS3 to figure out where all the cables & electronics are going to fit.

Finding a place for the USB controller board is proving to be the most difficult task, but I'm confident we'll find a suitable home for it in the case somewhere.

Hopefully I'll have more to share tomorrow.

  • UPDATE:

I spent this evening working on the improved mod. I've got the PS3 torn down again, enlarged the hole in the back bezel for the 2 USB ports and mounted the USB cage to the bezel.

Looks really fantastic so far, you're gonna love it!

    Tomorrow begins the wiring.

  • Well GearLife, if you're telling the truth, I feel bad that your PS3 no longer works. However, I never told anyone to do this, nor have I made any guarantees. Good luck with your lawsuit.

In my opinion, what has happened is you didn't keep yourself and the PS3 grounded and you've zapped some component with an ESD (electrostatic discharge). I warned you to stay grounded.

People, if you have no experience doing this kind of work, or you have nobody to guide you, please, please don't do this!

  • On the other side its one of the best mods you can do to you PS3.

If you know how to do this.

Only ime gonna wait for the second mod.

  • well done and very good mod. Im impressed. How ever GearLife your a complete and utter prick. If you would like to mod you own PS3 and not think before you do it. then ROTFLMAO you ding. now go get a life ...

  • Watch out here come more views; I've been busy posting in as many places as I can.

  • UAU... amazing, realy a nice work! do you wanna do it for me?! :P

  • just buy a USB hub and plug it in the front

  • Wow! how insightful, I NEVER thought of doing that...thank you for your suggestion;)

Seriously, I wanted the rear port for my PS EYE because the cord plugged in the front is really ugly,

  • Awesome Video man, I just took my faceplate off last week. Whats the song n your video? It's really good, I like it alot.

  • Dirty Robot by Arling & Cameron, Album: We Are A & C

  • Very nice mod. I'll do this when the PS3 costs 250€ so I could buy another if I fuk up LOL

  • You could have cut a little hole in the back for a switch to switch between the front and rear ports so you wouldn't have the problem of 2 being active at once.

  • I don't think a switch would be practical.

  • I didn't think of installing a switch, however my goal is to put a two port USB hub in the back. This was just a first-run to see if it would work at all and if I could find space in the back bezel for a port. Once I get a hub in and wired properly, I won't lose any ports in the front and gain two ports in the back.

  • Very good, thanks for your efforts in doing this and posting your work.

  • i had A nightmare like this once
