Kathryn, your generation really is the future. Not just metaphorically or biologically, but you seem to be the generation that has finally awoken from the deep slumber. I think the internet gets a lot of credit for this, but nevertheless, I've never been so hopeful for the future in my life! You can do it. Restore liberty to the US, and turn back the predictable decline of wealth and the thrashing in violence that dying empires always experience!
Thank you for speaking for your generation. I am a 49 year old teacher who has worked for 24 years in a lower income community. I have always thought it was so disingenuous for the public school system to push these kids into college when they would be better served with training in electrical, plumbing, construction, auto mechanics, etc. where they are going to end up after a failed attempt at academics anyway. All part of the elite trying to enslave the poor by another method.
Splendid! The same message I've been telling the underclassmen at my high school: Find something you're passionate about and do it well. I'm saddened and disgusted at all of my senior classmates who have no direction in life other than a vague idea of family life in the suburbs. Work to them is a necessary evil. Completely opposite of what I believe.
Also, have you read any of Ayn Rand's novels/non-fiction? What is your view on her philosophy, Objectivism?
I also blame the terrible, ineffective public schools (end DOE!) for our youth's woes. So much of public education is based on rote, monkey see monkey do, learning methods. Many graduate knowing how to mimic ideas and present a perfect college resume but never learn the fundamentals of thinking independently, to examine why. Government wants us to obey, so they teach kids how to obey, nothing more.
You are so right Kathryn. It's too bad kids have to make such a momentous decision so early in their lives. I also think a lot of blame should be placed on the parents. They need to look at their child and see if college would really help them in the long run vs. the debt and time they need to commit to it. They can always go to college later on, 23, 26, even older, and still be competitive. It really is what they put into getting a degree rather then just getting the degree.
Really it's a cycle like this: High school teaches you how to receive orders. College teaches you how to learn. Once you have that piece of paper, jobs will realize you know how to learn things. Jobs teach you what you need to do, and by that point everything you learned in college should have been wiped from your memory by that time. In the end you make a profit, but sadly you have to go through a lot of bs in these depressing times. I'm currently in college taking diversity courses. Sad. ...
In this video you explain that college is not the only option, but you fail to mention other options besides college. If there's other options to suceed in life besides college, what are they? What do you suggest?
Big Think, TED, Yale Open Courses and many other sources to educate yourself online for free. Destroy this societal dogma that Degrees = Success because it doesn't; why do you think all these people are occupying all across the country? They bought in to the lie; they put their faith in the system. "Get a job hippie" doesn't cut it anymore; cause a McDonald Job doesn't pay off a 100,000 dollar loan.
I argued this 4 years your younger missy. Althought the "the goverment only wants your money" at least in Britain is not the case. What brain dead goverment who has huge deficits and more importantly debt want to increase their deficit by having to fork out more student loan money now. But anyways they are just narrow-minded just like employers the only thing they care about is Experience and a Degree. Everyone who doesn't have either are not worth anyones time which is basically discrimination
College should only be for the well-motivated who truly want to dedicate themselves to academics. But because of all the Federal loans and mandates, there are so many kids who literally just go to college to party and pull chicks/hook up and get wasted.
In my experience the ones who deserve the high paying jobs, have the skills for them, and for whom college is "the right choice" are the engineering, math, microbiology, etc. majors. They are usually more serious.
ok, I argue these exact points with my friends who tell me that college IS the only thing to do. I am an entrepreneur. I make money for myself as my own boss. I am turning 20 and am in my 2nd year of college and I honestly don't believe that the education is WORTH my time. I have already made a deeply woven hammock of support for myself already. You don't need a college education to get somewhere in life. You need networking, real world knowledge, business common sense, and a drive to succeed.
By the way, I really agree with what you said in this video. I had this same exact discussion with my parents recently (both of whom agree). College isn't for everybody necessarily. Every economy needs various services and professionals, not all of which require a college degree. We need mechanics, cashiers, sales people, farmers, entertainers, service people, athletes, etc. On the flip side, colleges are failing at providing necessary education for actual job opportunities.
College typically does equal higher income (over the course of one's life it's like 300k more) and right now people with college education are facing an unemployment rate of 5% which is almost half the national average. That being said, the debt is a big issue, especially since not all degrees offer the same future pay potential.
@Volksverhetz Not surprising at all. As a libertarian, Ron Paul's message goes beyond all boundaries of race, gender, and religion, moreso than any of the other candidates. I could go on about the exact reasons, but mainly its mainstream media that has purported wrong information about Ron Paul that would probably make you believe that.
Great thoughts Kathryn. I agree with you. If college were a promise of a great future then it would be that but what you've described corresponds to what I've seen in the real world. It can help but there are several different paths to a great career.
Besides, many people who've gone to college and make great money hate their jobs and would gladly be paid less for something they love.

If you have ambition, it only might help you succeed, depending on what doors it opens. But college is not necessary and if you don't think it will help you, don't do it. The debt I accumulated getting a masters degree has not been worth it at all.
It's sad that people won't wake up to simple truth. They've been drinking the government koolaid that tells them collage is the only answer. My other friends haven't been so lucky, they don't have jobs but they have degrees

Ask is the US economy experiencing a bump in the road or something more major?
Higher education should be a basic human right. It should be offered to all citizens, regardless of ability to pay. This is how it is in Sweden, France, and many other countries.
@shamgar001 - I totally agree! Look at what the top 1% is doing to the middle class. The CEOs of large corporations and hedge fund managers are looting and plundering the bottom 99% with impunity.
