  • It says he wrote IN English not that he was English.

  • he was Irish...but for some reason he is always seen as English...maybe cause he studied in England...not sure.

  • Oscar Wilde was Irish

  • Happy birthday Oscar ...

  • Happy Birthday Oscar Wild, a genius.

  • you can listen to his audibook on my channel!

  • you can listen to his audibook on my channel!

  • @hehsus no shit.... yes he wrote in english... but he was still irish....

  • Robbie Ross's ashes were entombed in Oscar's tomb in Pere Lachaise. He was Oscar's true friend and it is fitting that they spend eternity together.

  • my five stars for oscar wilde like video me quebraste con oscar wilde te puse un video mìo mi poema mi imagen mi voz gracias besos cuenta conmigo

Oscar.Wilde MI ÌDOLO EL MEJOR DEL MUNDO...

  • 1:10 He mentions that Europeans were reading Wilde more than any English Writer even shakespeare...

Well, in that case I´d accept British because wilde was Irish.

  • except, not even.

  • "more than any ENGLISH writer", he was IRISH....

  • You also spotted the error.

  • roger casement was also a gay irish historic figure

  • I love every word he wrote, I love the meaning of suffering, I love the meaning of pain, I love the way he discovered the knowledge of the pain, I love his passion, his stories, I love Goethe and the importance that his words had on him.... I love Wilde!!

  • what were the meanings?

  • what an amazing man!

    r.i.p oscar

cant wait to visit in july xx

  • He must have suffered greatly in prison, because of his sensitivities to everything.

  • This argument is silly. The facts are that Wilde was from the Anglo-Irish upper class. He considered himself an Irishman and was considered one. At that time, particularly for someone of his background, there was little contradiction with being Irish and British. He took care to lose his accent when he went to Oxford and did nothing to promote Irish nationalism though his mother was an ardent nationalist. His Irish roots show in his work but he was clearly happy to be Anglo-Irish.

  • Ireland should not claim Mr Wilde until it changes its outmoded anti-gay legislation. Until then, he remains OUR Orpheus, not yours. That is - the GLBT movement.

  • You simply need to read Joseph Pearce's "The Unmasking of Oscar Wilde." You will be enlightened.

  • I have. You should read The Secret Life of Oscar Wilde. Doubly-enlightening. It is the first book to use the unpublished diaries and journals of his contemporaries - including the infamous Trelawny Blackhouse.

  • By the way, Pearce's attempt to "de-homosexualise" Wilde has been widely criticised by academics and Wilde specialists alike. It is unnecessary to remove Wilde's sexuality in order to enjoy his genius - unless, of course, you have ulterior motives... Pearce's assertion of Wilde turning to religion does not show his "conversion" but rather extends his hubris: "Catholicism is the only religion... to die in."

  • De-homosexualise? No. In fact Pearce highlighted his behavior and the consequences it had on his family- being a failure to them. Removing Wilde's sexuality is not what it's about. Reading a biography that basically says "He had LOTS of gay sex" doesn't enlighten me because that's something I already knew. Highlighting his religious activities however does. To appreciate the genius of someone, no don't take things away(de-homosexualise) but simply acknowledge

  • everything about the person. Like Tolkien, Dali, T.S. Eliot, and even Andy Warhol, to dismiss their religious side would be to prevent yourself from knowing the full person like so many people sadly do. It makes your understanding flawed. But when you know the full person, it allows you to fully understand the genius of that person and the personal sensibilities contained in their work.

  • So yes I agree, dont take away his homosexual activities, and dont take away his conversion. Through the authority of his own dignity, it is his own to hold on to in his sacred hands and not ours to take away.

  • he was irish, but lived in england.

  • he's Irish dipsticks do ur research proper ....

  • Yet he wrote in English.

  • "english writer" he was irish...
