Hey Garageband, great Video :) Did you ever hear the sound of the Rode NT-A, can you make a comparison to the 420 Perception? If not, doesn´t matter. Thanks for you video :)
@GaragebandandBeyond You didn't answer his question, mate. He asked HOW you turn it on or off, meaning which position is on or off. I too want to know this.
@GSGBMusicc Yes you need a preamp, all mics require a preamp to function, but that doesn't mean you have to buy a separate one. Every interface has built in preamps. I use and love my Presonus AudioBox USB
This is a GREAT Mic...I was so lost on what to buy but I think I found my liking...thank you for that...and u r very talented...I can tell u r honest n have endless hours of hardwork put into music...I respect that! Thank you again for ur help...u made me securely happy! :)
Hi, I've decided to get the Perception 420 but I jus realised it doesn't have a USB output? What do I need to do to get my recordings on to (windows/mac)? I really hope you can help me out! thanks.
@BreeElle you'll need an external sound card (audio interface), or some kind of adaptor wire from XLR to USB, I have no idea if that even exists but an audio interface is your best bet.
@idreamtofflight I've realised I do need an audio interface XLR to USB does exist but it doesn't supply the phantom power that the perception 420 requires. thanks for the help! :))
@GaragebandandBeyond Well it's not called that but its called "R16 Recorder:Interface:Controller"
and I can hear my mic. It works when i put on the headphones on I can hear myself. I just have trouble trying to record with it using Cubase LE 5. I would put a track on "record" and start recording my vocals but when I'm finish it doesn't show anything that I've recorded. Yea' i Kinda wasted 600 bucks! LMAO
@rapper123123 the fact that you can't record your mic has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the mic. It's because you haven't setup Cubase correctly, and you're just blaming it on the mic.
That's like saying this:
"I bought a car without any wheels. The wheels shipped seperately. I don't know how to install the wheels onto the car, so I just left them uninstalled. I bought a premium $600 key, but when I put it in the ignition, the car wouldn't start moving! THAT STUPID KEY IS TO BLAME!!"
Hi thinking about getting this mic for my wedding reception Ceremony. I tried several wireless lapels which all failed at one point or another. I dont mind setting up the extra cord for the wired mic, my question is this a good mic to use in this situation and should I be buying a windscreen with it?
@GaragebandandBeyond No that is not good enough, I need mic that pics up front and back, I have that mic you mention, its ok for announcement but this is a ceremony to pick up, Minister, bride and groom.
the other day i was looking a dutch video clip and i saw a big microphone whit a metal thing around it like in this clip on youtube: Kempi - Stratiblues ft. Mr Probz & Tim Wes (Akoestisch) and i saw it also at other big musicians.
Hi, this might be a weird question, but I want to buy this mic online, is it safe to ship condenser mics internationally? i know dynamic mics can take the stress a bit better, but condensers are very fragile. What do you think?
@ceilingkatt It's not a weird question, it's good to care about your mics! The AKG P420 comes with a very nice hard shell case, it can travel very safely, don't worry! Good luck!
Great review. I wanted to get your opinion on which mic I should get. I'm a young artist looking to create some rock/rap music. So would you say their is a big difference in vocal quality between the akg 220 and 420? & what audio box would say works best with it. & is it easy to use and tweak the sound with garage band. I'm curious to which one I should get. Let me know what you think. Thanks
Nice work with the vids. Just a quick question though. I was using the at2020 usb condenser mic to my laptop(i7 with 4gb ram) and while I was singing, the voice came into my earphones in a delay. I know that is called latency. SO I returned the merchandise and researched online. If I purchase the akg p220 along with m-audio fast track pro usb interface(has zero latency monitering), would this prevent latency (To near zero) so that I can record. Please help. I just need anything that stops this.
hi just wanna ask something. if you are recording vocals through the perception 420 and in the same time you are playing the acoustic guitar does the mic capture the sound of the guitar or rejects it?? thank you
@ItsAaron90 It will capture everything you put in front of it. Mics don't really reject sound unless it is outside of it's pickup area in which case it's really just ignoring the sound not rejecting it. ha ha ha
hi i have a question, i haved seen your other video called (how to build a home recording studio) and you talk about the akg c3000 ... which mic is the better ? the akg perception 420 or the akg c3000 ... because i don't know which mic is better for vocal ... and i want a professional sound and i'm going to buy a preamp and compressor , so please responce me a need help because my project need to restart ! ps: sorry my english is bad
@liljeyzzy It really depends on your voice, the C3000 is a little darker but certainly not in a bad way. The P420 gives you a lot more options because of the multiple patterns it offers.
If I had to chose one over the other I would probably say go for the p420
@JSprayaEntertainment The Figure 8 pattern turns both diaphragms on, meaning that the opposite side that is facing you, is also capturing the sound. It's really not ideal to use that position for vocals. UNLESS you have experimented and like what you're getting I would recommend trying the Cardioid pattern. It's the one designed for vocals.
i know i didnt deny that, i'm just saying this mic won't distort at a low level like a lot of other condensor mics. i'm not saying it won't distort because it will, this just has a higher tolerance
im new to getting mics. so what would i need to hook this up to a music software like protools? obviously not via usb.. so can you pls help, iknow im a newbie :D

I cant make a choice between the rode NT2A & the AKG Perception 420....CAN ANYONE HELP ME OUT !!!!???? any help would be appreciated !!!! I'm going to be recording male alto vocals WITH HEAPS OF PITCH CORRECTION!!!!
The most common microphone pickup pattern you'll encounter is the cardioid pattern. Cardioid means "heart-shaped", from the Greek root word "cardi". A cardioid pickup pattern means pickup to the front of the microphone, and to a lesser extent the sides, with good rejection of sound to the back of the microphone.
Ok, I have a few things to say. I have the 200 series, and it's nice and all, but when I talk into it, it's a lot more clearer than it records, it's that normal for all mics? Also, I don't even have up too loud but when I sing into it, it scratches really easy like I'm screaming into it, what could that be? Could that be based on how I have it hooked up, wires, the mic itself, where the mic is cornered in my closet, etc... Can you give me some advice?
I like most of AKG products they have an great sound to them for an tube mic and you can't beat the price everybody always wants neumann but i think the 820 akg sounds just as great as the neamannu87 for less then the price
my man compliments to your videos particularly on this one , i bought the same mic after seeing your review my problem is i dont get the same quality of sound that your getting, im not sure if its in the connections or im using the wrong equipment , i basically hook it up on my alesis 102 then to my mac then my amp ,but the quality os sound that im gettiing my man is so weak,, please if you have time and help me somehow i would appreciate it ..

hey, just a quick msg, I already own this mic and I love it but I was just wondering if anyone could answer me this. I have been recording my friends band recently who are extremely loud and using the 420 as a room mic just to get the sound of the band playing in a room, do you think the loudness could damage the mic at all? or cause it to lose some of it's crisp qaulities when recording quiter instruments for example acoustic guitar or soft vocals?
what are the best settings for this mic for live loud vocals? I keep getting a lot of feedback. like, i don't even know how to use it. you know the switches on the mic? where should they be set for that? or is it even good to use for live vocals?
@TheTOBster21 we have the same problem , i bought the same mic after seeing his review my problem is i dont get the same quality of sound that your getting, im not sure if its in the connections or im using the wrong equipment , i basically hook it up on my alesis 102 then to my mac then my amp ,but the quality os sound that im gettiing my man is so weak,, please if you have time and help me somehow i would appreciate it ..
Haha, too much money spending and not enough study. Everyone who knows sound could have told you that. All condenser mics pick up EVERYTHING!!! They are for recording studios. They will get feedback loops if you are playing their sound through speakers even if the speakers are miles away. If you can hear them, the mic can. You need a dynamic mic for going live. They have a 3 inch pickup zone. That means they won't get feedback from your speakers. Even if they are a meter away.
Does anyone have any experience with the Perception 120? I have heard good reports on the 100 which is not made anymore. The 120 is very reasonably priced.
This review alone had helped me decide on my next condenser mic. I was comparing this mic , the AudioTechnica AT4040 and the Rode NT1a and I'm going with the AKG Perception 420 because the multi-pattern pickup makes it much more flexible in the studio. Very clean detail in HD.
Hi dude! Nice Video! I Have the Perception 220 and its a great Microphone too... I have a QUESTION: How did you synchronize the sound of the mic and the video?
I love your youtube channel, its amazing, great stuff on here. Could you compare/test the Audio-technica 2050 and the AKG 420 for me (singing) or have someone sing if you cant sing :P thx so much :)
if im looking for one mic that will be used strictly for r&b and rap vocals at this price, should i go with this mic or do you have a better suggestion?
one question, what differences with perception 820, in sound and quality... there are much difference??? Do you recomended a tube mic or mic with tube preamp?
what headphones do you have here.. what would you recommended it for, are they good just for reference or recording in general im a drummer and i need music with no bleed lol also when i record acoustic guitar my guitarist likes to put his head toward the mic to see the strings better so what i need is a good pair of headphones that would let me play the music back into them loud music in that fact and wont bleed as much.. i was looking at the AKG k271 MKII what do you think
can anybody help me out with preamps? i already got a mic but it sounds awful, so i am thinking about getting a new one... not sure yet, but what preamps are good for this mic or any others?
@AlyciaMariie Hey there, I use the PreSonus TubePre. I have a video up on my channel about it. It's the best "bang for your buck" inexpensive PreAmp. Also you can get the BEST deal at candymanstringsandthings {dot} com. Call them, ask for Randy, tell them you were referred Garageband and Beyond. That will insure you get the best price.
@GaragebandandBeyond seriously? that thing is cheap! wonderin if it would be enough for proper vocal recording... plus i'm not sure about the microphone yet.. i was really disappointed with my first microphone so i'm pretty careful now! do they also do shipping to europe?
@mrbumbum11 Hey there, this mic will record drums very well. If you are going to try and record your entire kit with one mic, try placing it 2-3 ft in front of you kick and have the bottom of the diaphragm lined up with the top of your kick.
Have a quick question ? Why when I make a record, it delays for about 1 second when I monitored what I play through my headphones ? Advance thanks. = )

@metaxisthedrummer What does cardioid mean?
PeaceMotherBrother 1 year ago
@PeaceMotherBrother
The most common microphone pickup pattern you'll encounter is the cardioid pattern. Cardioid means "heart-shaped", from the Greek root word "cardi". A cardioid pickup pattern means pickup to the front of the microphone, and to a lesser extent the sides, with good rejection of sound to the back of the microphone.

is AKG 420 the Latest among the PERCEPTION series? thats before 820?
xerky07 1 year ago
Ok, I have a few things to say. I have the 200 series, and it's nice and all, but when I talk into it, it's a lot more clearer than it records, it's that normal for all mics? Also, I don't even have up too loud but when I sing into it, it scratches really easy like I'm screaming into it, what could that be? Could that be based on how I have it hooked up, wires, the mic itself, where the mic is cornered in my closet, etc... Can you give me some advice?

I like most of AKG products they have an great sound to them for an tube mic and you can't beat the price everybody always wants neumann but i think the 820 akg sounds just as great as the neamannu87 for less then the price

hey, just a quick msg, I already own this mic and I love it but I was just wondering if anyone could answer me this. I have been recording my friends band recently who are extremely loud and using the 420 as a room mic just to get the sound of the band playing in a room, do you think the loudness could damage the mic at all? or cause it to lose some of it's crisp qaulities when recording quiter instruments for example acoustic guitar or soft vocals?
seanlovesradiohead 1 year ago
what are the best settings for this mic for live loud vocals? I keep getting a lot of feedback. like, i don't even know how to use it. you know the switches on the mic? where should they be set for that? or is it even good to use for live vocals?
TheTOBster21 1 year ago
@TheTOBster21 This mic is NOT really good for live vocals. It's extremely difficult to control a condenser mic on a loud stage.
Really the best thing for that is a Shure SM58.

@GaragebandandBeyond thanks for the quick response and info bro!

@TheTOBster21

The 120 is very reasonably priced.
dbhammond 1 year ago
This review alone had helped me decide on my next condenser mic. I was comparing this mic , the AudioTechnica AT4040 and the Rode NT1a and I'm going with the AKG Perception 420 because the multi-pattern pickup makes it much more flexible in the studio. Very clean detail in HD.

Hi dude! Nice Video! I Have the Perception 220 and its a great Microphone too... I have a QUESTION: How did you synchronize the sound of the mic and the video?

If I'm only using it for voice over, is there any advantages of the P420 over the p220?
I know the p420 has more patterns, but does the p420 in cardioid mode have any advantages or differences over using the p220?
gorojo1 1 year ago
Hey,
I love your youtube channel, its amazing, great stuff on here. Could you compare/test the Audio-technica 2050 and the AKG 420 for me (singing) or have someone sing if you cant sing :P thx so much :)

Hi, nice review!
one question, what differences with perception 820, in sound and quality... there are much difference??? Do you recomended a tube mic or mic with tube preamp?
Thanks!
osvtorr 1 year ago
what headphones do you have here.. what would you recommended it for, are they good just for reference or recording in general im a drummer and i need music with no bleed lol also when i record acoustic guitar my guitarist likes to put his head toward the mic to see the strings better so what i need is a good pair of headphones that would let me play the music back into them loud music in that fact and wont bleed as much.. i was looking at the AKG k271 MKII what do you think
thanks

can anybody help me out with preamps? i already got a mic but it sounds awful, so i am thinking about getting a new one... not sure yet, but what preamps are good for this mic or any others?
AlyciaMariie 1 year ago
@AlyciaMariie Hey there, I use the PreSonus TubePre. I have a video up on my channel about it. It's the best "bang for your buck" inexpensive PreAmp. Also you can get the BEST deal at candymanstringsandthings {dot} com. Call them, ask for Randy, tell them you were referred Garageband and Beyond. That will insure you get the best price.
GaragebandandBeyond 1 year ago
@GaragebandandBeyond seriously? that thing is cheap! wonderin if it would be enough for proper vocal recording... plus i'm not sure about the microphone yet.. i was really disappointed with my first microphone so i'm pretty careful now! do they also do shipping to europe?

hey
how well would this mic record if i just put it right in front of my drums. if its good where would i put it.
btw love the vids you have been such a help
thanks
mrbumbum11 1 year ago
@mrbumbum11 Hey there, this mic will record drums very well. If you are going to try and record your entire kit with one mic, try placing it 2-3 ft in front of you kick and have the bottom of the diaphragm lined up with the top of your kick.
Good luck!

hey
just want to know if i just stuck this mic in front of my drums how god would it sound, and which position would be the best to put it in.

@TheMegaMrKj The AKG P420 will do all those things well. And if you buy it from my friends store you'll be helping a family owned business!
GaragebandandBeyond 1 year ago
@MarkeXangels Yes this is a GREAT vocal mic. I have used it several times for that and was ALWAYS happy with the results.
If you do buy it you really should consider getting it from my friends store! The link is on the info area of this video.
I'm really trying to help them, they deserve it!!
thanks!

16StarvingArtist 1 year ago
@16StarvingArtist No this mic IS NOT mostly for vocals. In fact my video was obviously supposed to show that.
I really do love the mic it is very versatile.
