  • I have fired possibly thousands of rounds with corrosive primers over the past 40 or so years. I clean my guns that fired these rounds using Hoppe's No. 9 solvent. This solvent was designed for this. It works great! I've never had any rust or pitting in the bores or on the rest of the metal after using this stuff.

  • i really like what this video is all aboot. oh, and nice hoose too! :D

    canuks!

  • @Lvl22nerd You can get blocked for that :)

  • My Dad use to use hot soapy water on the old O3-A3, pretty much the same thing as you are doing, with a bit of soap

  • Great video! I had a box of ammo left in moving boxes get rem oil all over it and now the ammo has a dark green film almost like wax on it. Is it still usable if I try and clean it?

  • just by winchester amo its not carrosive

  • @metisman100 It is not that hard to clean.

  • @metisman100 Too bad is costs a buck a shot. You cant beat the low cost of Russian surplus.

  • Aww shit....I left my Mosin Nagant back at home and I went back to the state where my college is. I shot about 50 corrosive rounds from my Mosin Nagant for testing purposes. I just recently picked up the rifle too and didn't know that I had to clean it EVERYTIME AFTER EVERY USE. I know that the rifle is pretty cheap, however I paid about $178(includes tax/dros). Its a cheap gun but moneys dont grow on trees. ANY HELP FOR CLeaning TIPS if I don't get to clean my rifle for almost 1 MONTH?

  • @killacomeback Wire brush and a good bore cleaner lol.

  • I have an SKS and normally shoot Wolf hollow points. It says "non-corrosive" right on the box. And Wolf is Russian made ammo. Why people even mess with corosive ammo is beyond me.

  • @Dirtboxhor Cheaper.

  • @Dirtboxhor old ammo 70's and earlier is all corrosive new manufactured ammo like wolf, herter's, and brown bear aren't corrosive

  • @TheSuperspudnik I know, but I'm just saying why not spend a little more for decent ammo and save the wear and tear on your rifle. . not to mention the time spent having to deep clean it every time after shooting it. Just my opinion.

  • @Dirtboxhor I just picked up 1000 rounds for $150. That's a good reason, plus these guns were designed for it. A little Birchwood Casey muzzle magic immediately after shooting works wonders.

  • @76Stankfinger Where did you get that 1000 rounds for $150 that would be awesome if I could find it that cheap.

  • @RedFries3 I don't see the deal anymore at that price, that was about 8 months ago. I found a sealed tin, 880 rounds for $159.00 at Arms Of America out of Flagstaff, AZ.

  • @76Stankfinger Oh ok $160 for 880 is what I see around online. Thanks for the reply

  • @Dirtboxhor with some guns like the mosin you do not get a choice. if you wanna shoot cheap with a mosin you need to shoot corrosive. if you want non corrosive the ammo costs more then a .308. 100 dollar rifle, so corrosive threw it is not so much a big deal.

  • @Dirtboxhor sks has a crome bore so you can fire corrosive ammo and not worry.mosin nagant dose not tho

  • @pugwash27 The gas tube is not chromed sooo lol.

  • HA gun geek, how do you know if ammo is corrosive? judging from your other replies the price isn't a factor, can you explain that also?

  • @dasdew2 I think all russian and warsaw pack ammo is corrosive but some of the newer yugo isnt.

  • @Gungeek The mosin can take it,along with older war rifles.Hell you can use corrosive ammo on a sprinfied M1A and it will be fine(they where built for corrosive ammo),besiddes if it meses up you go get a new one from the dump for a hundred bucks.I wouldn't worry about it,but you actually know what your doing after all i am watching your video not the other way around. After how many round should it be cleaned?

  • @dasdew2 If you shoot one corrosive round you should clean asap.

  • @Igman2020 nope

  • Comment removed

  • all the ammo for the mosin nagants are corrosive

  • @anthonytony1er not true.

  • @ChisCorle01 I got mine pre owned by some other guy and the whole barrel was cleaned and the bore is still shiny.

@gungeek But sometimes the bolt will stick, is the ammo or the headspace?

  • Windex would be much easier. But whatever works i guess :D

  • its all corrosive

  • @anthonytony1er What is?

  • @Gungeek the ammo is corrosive he was saying personally idk i am not getting into it

  • @anthonytony1er Not all 7.62x54R is corrosive

  • @Gungeek I just picked up a 91/30 today. It's dated 1930 and all if the serial numbers match. I love it

  • @MrMeatwad96 Awesome gun man, I have a 1934 Mosin with matching numbers

  • I have heard of boiling water. Seems most use Alkaline Windex to neutralize. Beats me what works best.

  • @Constantine909 I think I'm gonna get mine at the local fleet farm, $90 for the mosin and $89 for the ammo. A good deal I think. I'm not really much of an online shopper lol

  • @gungeek thanks. I'm thinking about getting a 91/30

  • @MrMeatwad96 I bought my 91/30 at jgsales.com for $80 if you're interested, you can also buy 440 rounds of corrosive ammo for around $80 as well

  • @MrMeatwad96 just picked up a 91/30 yesterday and i love it but damn the cosmoline is ANOYING

  • Long*

  • Oil to use? Sorry my last comment got too ling lol

  • @gungeek ok I have 2 questions: do you think this rifle would be good for deer hunting? And what's a good

  • @MrMeatwad96 The M38 is a great deer gun , and I use a light machine oil like 3in1.

  • are you canadian?

  • @matta173 No ;)

  • @Gungeek no? whats that aboot? :P

  • @joshkkv I don't get it.

  • @Gungeek teasing you about your accent :P

  • @joshkkv What accent?

  • @matta173 ah it sounds like it haha

  • I clean my guns after every use even when I dont use corrosive or surplus ammo.

  • that is one sexy stock

  • Try running Windex (it has to have amonia) down the bore and barrel it works on HIGHLY CORROSIVE 5.45 and on my Mosin Nagant

  • break free is the best stuff for corossive ammo

  • I don't use boil water to clean the salts I use Windex to neutralize the salts

  • My friend has the same rifle and he claims his ammo is not corrosive but it's old surplus and I can't wait to see the rust, he is not going to clean it.

  • I buy WWII era bore cleaner. Stinks to high heaven but takes care of the salts in the primers without the labor intensive boiling water, drying and oiling. this gets it all in 2 steps. :)

You can pick up the bore cleaner on Ebay.....

  • I just coat mine in CLP after I shoot... I don't even use windex or anything.. No rust in 3 years so far :)

  • dose it have to be water can it be a cleaning solvent

  • with corrosive ammo i use butches bore shine and clean everything not just the barrel and plenty of solvent

  • With an SKS do i do the same? pull the bolt back, pour boiling water and run rags thru it?

  • @k2mkfw I would take the whole gun apart but yeah you can do that.

  • @Gungeek i have a question. what is corrosive ammunition and what is different from other types of ammo?

  • Sorry I don't know much about rifles, but I am about to get one of these and I was wondering, wont water also be corrosive? Wont that cause it to rust?

  • @physchohead24 You dry and oil the barrel after you put the water in the barrel.

  • @YenkoSuperChevy really thats weird because i know alot of people who are fine with this method my dad refuses to let me pour water down the gun i need to get him too understand

  • I spray some windex down the barrel and leave it for a while before flushing with boiling water, it really helps to get the crud out.

  • just use ballistol works great

  • This is my method and i want to know if it works. I run down patch with windex on it then use gun oil next then run a dry patch. I clean the whole breach with solvent and oil. I only clean the head of the bolt is this an ok mewthod?

  • @148scalemodeling wait and see lol.

  • @148scalemodeling For my Mosin Nagants, I use windex as well running a patches down the bore, followed by a brush, then another windex soaked patch. Then I use Hoppes no.9 and dry patches then oil. So far everything is ok! I do rub some windex on the bolt face as well just to play it safe.

  • Thanks for the tip about the funnel and hose. Inexpensive and effective...I like it!

  • @Sagit112585 Nope

  • @Sagit112585 Do what lol?

  • can i salt my popcorn whit it? .... i dont get it tough if is corrosive because salt atracts moisture, why poring water on it, it wont make it worst?

  • @fireline6 Listen to the vid .

  • @fireline6 its not sodium chloride (food salt) its potassium chlorate I believe.

  • can i salt my popcorn whit it?

  • i like to use the boiling water method as well, as for the glass cleaner(ammonia) is more useful for copper fouling. as for chrome lined bores, i would rather be safe than sorry. just me.

  • @William11778 Yeah I never bothered with windex.

  • great video!

  • I chewed up my 91/30 when i bought it, didnt know it was corrosive ammo and waited 5 days before cleaning. The barrel was furry with rust, it still fires and shoots fairly accurate. im going to pick up another i think its the joy of a $89 rifle.

  • Can you make a video on how to carry or use the rifle with the sling? Thanks.

  • @Deathless2288 Sure.

  • @Gungeek Hey if you have a chrome lined barrel will the corrosive ammo still effect it?

  • @banjitson420 Thats why the chrome is there for.

  • @Gungeek thx i thought so but i wasn't sure.

BTW i have a type-56 with a chrome lined barrel thats why i asked.

  • @banjitson420 but the gas tube isnt lol.

  • @Gungeek lol i know i still clean it every time after i shoot it. Ive only shot about 400 rounds out of it but the barrel/bore still looks the same as the day i bought it.

  • @Deathless2288 If you do not know how to carry a firearm... you have no reason to even be touching one.

  • @bigkevo0 That is exactly why I am asking him to make a video. So people like myself can learn. I never said I have/own one

  • @Deathless2288 Take some good courses on gun safety, might cost some but it is worth it and its easy. I took another batch a few months ago just to stay current. Last time was like 15 years earlier. Your concerns are prudent and you'll get some good info. No matter if a person is in the military or just a casual plinker, gun safety should ALWAYS be first, so get certified too.

  • @Gungeek, you don't have to clean the bolt after shooting corrosive ammo. its chrome-metal. it doesn't easily rust. i used to religiously clean the bolt face after shooting, turns out you don't have to. i haven't cleaned the bolt face on mine the last 1/2 year. I've shot probably 250 rounds, all corrosive, the bolt face is just dirty, no pitting or rust.

same for my ak and cz-52, which i also shoot corrosive ammo in. the corrosive salts never really gets on the bolt face.

  • @ihatemockingbirds yeah i dont clean the bolt face on my wasr or nagant either

  • @ihatemockingbirds This vid is about how I clean my gun so... lol

  • We use boiling water to clean the residues left by black powder as well,a lil match stick in the touch hole ,fill with water and swish repeat till water isnt scuzzy.

  • So i decided to see what kind of "Damage" corrosive yugo ammo would do to one of my rifles. I shot 729 rounds in august(10th-25th) out of a Saiga 7.62, i came back to iraq, it is 25SEP10 and dad says nothing wrong with the weapon. Could it be the weather in AZ?

  • @sapper480 Probably.

  • @sapper480 it has to be the climate, if you tried that in missouri where i live, the barel would have been rusted through.

  • @sapper480 probably is the weather. its very humidity dependent. I'm in So-Cal, humidity really varies here. winters its dry, summers it humid. once I forgot to clean my mosin for 6 weeks after shooting corrosive ammo, there was barely any rust in the bore. that was winter. and just last week, its was pretty humid out (it was rainy), shot my CZ52 at the range, cleaned it the next morning and the bore was covered with rust! barely 12 hours had elapsed!

humidity really matters with corrosive ammo

  • hmmm never seen the "pouring" method. my father has always told me that throwing a rifle in super hot tub of water will help clean it and also get the leftover cosmo out of it - supposedly, that's what they taught him in the military. so, apparently, all of our military type rifles were done that method (our 91/30, jap t38, ak-47) and seem to have all came out OK and then with finishing TLC they came out better...

  • To clean mine, I use Smith and Wesson Synthetic Safe Bore and Action cleaner, a bore brush, and a cloth rag to wipe everything out of the barrel/bolt, is this good enough?

  • what is corrosive ammo?

  • @7xrepiv Corrosive ammo is ammunition that lasts longer than non corrosive ammo(winchester ammo, remington ammo, hornady ammo, federal ammo etc is non corrosive, but most if not all surplus ammo is corrosive),but will cause corrosion in your firearm if not cleaned properly, and after shooting.

  • @deerhunter1495 so after how many shot of corrosive do i have to clean the barrel?

  • @7xrepiv All it takes is one corrosive round to mess up your gun,so if you are going to shoot corrosive ammo, its best to shoot atleast 20 rounds to save your self the trouble of cleaning for just one round, but you should clean after shooting corrosive ammo,no matter how many rounds you shot.

  • @deerhunter1495 so i can shoot as many rounds as i want to but, as long as i clean afterwards the gun will be OK right?

  • @7xrepiv Yes

  • @deerhunter1495 Thank you for the help.

  • @7xrepiv as long as you use hot water, glass cleaner WITH AMMONIA, or break free CLP it will be good to go

  • swab with glass cleaner . has water to dissolve salts. Then clean normally with a gun bore cleaner, Hoppe's, ect Check again in a few days with a patch solvent.

  • I let it cool, spray that foaming barrel cleaner-it is designed to break down corrosive compounds, let it sit 15 minutes, boresnake it 2-4 times, and oil it with eezox and it's good to go until I need it again

  • It's a good thing that most of those rifles used chromed barrels. I had a Tokarev with an un-chromed barrel that went "black" after firing a box of shells.

Dish soap works great, provided your water is hot.

  • I pull a .30 cal bore snake with breakfree through mine, is that ok?

  • @foughtwolf It might work...

  • @foughtwolf .308, .30-06, .303, etc bore snake will work this the Nagant. I use one for mine.

  • @foughtwolf Breakfree CLP does work

  • @foughtwolf i use an 8mm brush on my cleaning rod. but honestly it feels like its scratching the bore. anyone have any helpful advice on this matter?

  • you can use Chemtool but dont get it on the wood it will take the finish off and eat down in to the wood or plastic i use it on my mauser and nagant it smells bad but it will remove anything it gets on good for taking cosmoline off too

  • When I took my mosin to the range I had a punctured primer, Took aaprt the bolt to scrape out all the brass, and even though I cleaned as soon as I got home (maybe 2 hours later), the ring around the firing pin won't go away :<

  • Does windex break down the salt in the barrel?

  • @IRedArmyI I don't think it does.

  • @Gungeek Windex with ammonia works perfectly fine. It HAS to have ammonia in it. The ammonia is what prevents the corrosion. Also Hoppe's No. 9 solvent works well.

  • @camarofive0 Old timer here, Hoppe's #9 does not dissolve salt, it will eventually sweat out and rust. Windix would woork because it is 95% water. Mill bore solvent is best, but hard to get. Black powder cleaner works fine as it dissolves salt. Best is hot water wash, dry, and follow up with Hoppes #9 to remove carbon and nitrates.

  • @IRedArmyI

Any Ammonia based solvent is supposed to break down the salt in the barrel. Windex has ammonia in it, so it should work. But I still do the Boiling water down the barrel first, then powder solvent, then 7.62 solvent, and then oil.

  • @IRedArmyI

It does, but hot soapy water works so there's no point really.

  • @IRedArmyI Windex/galss cleaner WITH AMMONIA does work.

  • @IRedArmyI The ammonia in Windex neutralizes the salt deposits

  • @IRedArmyI yes it does. windex contains water doesn't it? roughly 98% of it is water. you need minimum 8 patches drenched with windex. run each thru a couple times before using another windex-soaked patch. its how I've been cleaning my 91/30. and cz52. and wasr-10 (i have only corrosive mil surp ammo to shoot)

  • @IRedArmyI windex is great for cleaning corrosive ammo

  • @IRedArmyI yea it dose and iv heard of allot of people using it to. something to do with the chemicals

  • @IRedArmyI It neutralizes it, but you still need to clean it like any other rifle

  • how is the accuracy with these hungarian surplus ammo? thanks

  • @maydayfire Very good.

  • Where do you get your ammo? All surplus I found in Canada is Czech, not that it makes a difference, but I'd still like to know.

  • @SuperleggeraVW I got the Hungarian from SIR years ago.

  • Where do you get your stripper clips, every time I buy them they dont feed properly?

  • @GunGod777 They came on russian surplus.

  • @Gungeek Where did you get your russian surplus?

  • @GunGod777 With a rifle.

  • @GunGod777 you usually have to do a little bending to get them to feed right. just experiment with some pliers and 5 rounds.

  • Comment removed

  • corrosive ammo is surplus ammo, noobs. It's way cheaper and cleaning out your gun is not a big deal and should be done regardless.

  • why shoot corrosive ammo ?

    what corosive ? pounder ?

  • @druisteen1 corrosive ammo is usually surplus ammo, which is a lot cheaper

  • Can you point me to a good source for those chargers?

  • @CrystalHunter1989 Russian or eastblock ammo.

  • all these videos with corrosive ammo in them the ammo is always hungarian

  • There's an old addage; "Don't set the sun on a dirty gun." In other words clean it the day it's used. Just a fun bit of old "lore" for the history minded.

  • back in ww2 russia and many other countries primers were made with folinated mercury thats why when you buy guns from that era youll see little pits in the barrel cuz they didnt clean theyre guns too good if at all my mn 9130 has em in its barrel but it shoots just fine its not too bad to affect accuracy er anything but you can just use hoppes no.9 cleaning solvent or windex to clean all that shit out when youre done shooting

  • why would they use a material known to corrode metal in rifle ammo? lol, i sense a fail sequence coming on :P

  • @CrimsonOmen407 Just the way the primers were made then. I read some place the salt made the primers last longer.

  • I'd use a solvent to clean the barrel. Apparently the salt is sodium perchlorate -- which isn't too soluble in water. I bet hot water might clean it if you use a lot though.

  • so is it ok to pour root beer down the barrel or not?

  • @violenceinc Sure.

  • @violenceinc i pour gas n hot water then root beer then i shoot a round....then i wash it all out with a cold budweiser....and you'll never have to clean your gun.. hope it works for you.... :-)

  • How about Windex? I hear that's a decent way to clean after corrosive ammo as well. Thanks for the vid, GG.

  • @gruelin1 I used to use ORIGINAL FORMULA (only original formula) Windex because it neutralizes the salt compounds deposited in/on the barrel/bolt face. There is, however, a problem with that. The ammonia in that product, which is what actually acts on the salts, is also corrosive. I agree that water is the way to go. Just remember that the hotter the water, the more readily rust will form in the barrel immediately following it. Be sure to proceed with the rest of the cleaning immediately.

  • @gruelin1 Oh, I almost forgot. This is most likely not essential, but I apply WD-40 to the surfaces that were in contact with the water to displace residual moisture. Then I make sure to clean all of the WD-40 off using a regular bore cleaning solvent because WD-40 gums up over time. After that I clean the rifle normally and simply make sure to thoroughly, but not overly, oil the barrel, bolt face, etc. I hope that helps with your question.

  • OR, you could save yourself a ton of hassle and just clean it immediately after shooting with Hoppe's #9 solvent, which is wonderful for cleaning corrosive salts.

  • @ironbar66 Hot water is easy.

  • @ironbar66 new hoppes #9 doesn't have the cleaning agent for the salt deposits that build up in the bore anymore.

  • I just bought a M44 and took it to the range, I used PPU ammo and put about 15 rounds through it. I wish I would have watch your vid before trying to clean it. I went through half a pack of patches trying to get the thing clean. It's still not as clean as I would like it. Going to try your technique. Thanks for the video.

  • how do you take the molt out

  • bolt

  • @mcwolves3 Pull the trigger

  • @Gungeek thanks

  • well it dont matter if it's corrosive ammo or not dont buy a rifle if youre not going to take the time with it. always clean after fireing any kind of ammo!
