Make sure your user account is turned on. I was logged in as Administrator but could not delete a certain file. I know that sounds simple, but that's what it was in my case.

Hi, I recently upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate and it wont let me delete Firefox Setup because I don't have permission, however there is only 1 user on this computer which is the admin one. when i press properties on any file and click on the security tab the group/users name show Creator Owner,Trusted Installer,Administrators,Users inside the box, I noticed you have all these except "Creator Owner" on your video and I was wondering could that be a virus or someone else might be having access to my comp. or is this normal and how do i remove this user because I tried to do it like you said and couldn't this Owner Creator user has special permission box checked, can you help!!

Ok, so it didn't work the first time, but after I looked at a couple other videos, I found that a file I was trying to delete for 1 hour was finally defeated (haha!) by turning user control off on user accounts, removing all owners of the file, restarted the computer, then it let me delete it. Also, my computer now runs like 3x faster with it gone ^_^

I dont get it...I'm the administrator on my laptop. I copied a file from my other pc and put it on my laptop. I attempt to delete it...it ask if i want to...then asks for permission. I give it permission but then it says i still need it and wont let me delete it... Help please?

Either the file is still open (on your other PC) or you only "viewed" the ownership and didn't actually "take" ownership. Follow the video exactly to completely take ownership of the file and then you'll be able to delete it. Good luck!

That's just the security tab you're in - you gotta get to the ownership tab -> edit -> click your name -> ok.

THEN go to the security tab and ensure everything is checked for your account.

Also, you can view in HQ mode - there's a link in the comments section of the video.

You don't need full authority... you need ownership. Here's a test - go to the ownership tab. At the top it says who owns it.

Does it say yourcomputer\yourname (i.e., DELLPC\dbzkid161) Or {1231-123123-1231234-123123-12­3}?

If it still doesn't work, something else is using that file (Windows, virus, trojan, another pc, etc) - in this case, try unlocker or wholockme.

Or reboot in safe mode (press F8 when the computer is starting up to get to safe mode) and then try the same process.

If you want more help, please post a LOT more details. What did you click. What button was missing? What step failed?

try right-clicking on the folder. Then go to properties... and follow the video from there. Follow it very closely since it's not very intuitive the first time you do it.

Q: The user that owns the folder is not available.

A: Follow the rest of the steps to reset the owner to an "available" user (i.e., the user you are logged on with)

Q: The Security tab is not available

A: You might be using an edition of Vista I'm not familiar with... Home Basic perhaps? Or a non-WGA edition?

Explain :) It works for all permissions issue like this in a FAT/FAT32 file system.

You can turn off UAC if you forgot your administrator password. Click the start Orb, type MSCONFIG, go to Tools -> scroll down to "Disable UAC" and click "Launch." Then reboot and try again :)

Actually, I believe I was able to decipher and follow the steps in your video now, but I get "Error Applying Security" boxes, that have 'continue' or 'cancel', and as I hit 'continue' it goes through each file in the folder, so it's continue-continue-continue, denying me the abillity to apply the security changes to each file, one at a time. And when done, of course, I'm still unable to delete the folder!

The original (divx) copy looks great on my PC - I guess this was a test to see if the youtube video quality was sufficient for troubleshooting videos. If you maximize the video (using the link below the video), it's a little easier to read but still far from sufficient.

In my next video, I'll use the magnifying glass for each step, or take full size screenshots.

This fixes problems where the object is not owned by a user on your system. If you are having problems with a locked file/folder try "wholockme" or "unlocker"
