  • Good video, helped me out tremendously.

  • im not savy with soldering all i want to know is if I needed to add about a foot to the cord to say my ear buds would all i have to do is buy some wire and solder it?

  • Brilliant. I've been looking for a good guide to soldering and this easy to follow. Thank you.

  • Thank you very much, this was a very helpful.

  • he must really like joints

  • I found a pen-type thing in my basement, but no tip. where could I find one?

  • @jaj145 Radioshack for a couple bucks. Just make sure it's the right size.

  • @chiborib0 alright. thanks.

  • @coolcheeto

You're probably referring to flux. It's usually rosin or ammonium chloride and is used used when not using rosin core solder and it allows the solder to stick to whatever you're soldering.

  • HI there! anybody help. I've seen some people using a waxy solution to solder that makes big fumes. Is this required? What is this for?

  • Great clean information! Thanks!

  • Thanks a lot. Very good video. Really helped me.

  • PLEASE HELP what kind of solder do I need??

  • @williamholl1998 ROSIN CORE SOLDER. hope that helps

  • @williamholl1998 watch the movie it says it in the first minute

  • PLEASE HELP what kind of solder do I need??

  • Thank you!!!!! Very informative!

  • Thanks, Had a science fair invention coming up and this helped a lot

  • thank you. i like this,

  • you are the man.. nice video... you make it look so easy

  • whats a saddering iron?

  • @dannybee444 its spelled soldering iron and they are tools that you use to melt the solder like he did in the video. you can probably get a soldering iron and solder at a hardware store.

  • Thanks for an awesome tutorial! I just got a new stereo head unit for my car, and I decided I would learn how to install it myself (I knew nothing about car audio or electronics maintenance). I just practiced cutting/splicing/soldering on my old stereo setup in my living room after watching your video and getting a 40-watt kit (same one you have, actually). It works perfectly fine =D. Now I'll be ready for tomorrow when I work on the new stereo!

  • Wow Verry nice

  • Awesome!

  • Excellent tutorial, thanks. Budleigh Salterton reprazent.

  • my soldering is shit lol

  • i want to solder now!

  • can you ever use to much solder??

  • I was literally doing it the opposite way this whole time!

    Thank you!!

  • what could i use as solder

  • Great video! Thanks! It's a lot simpler than I thought it would be.

  • SOLDER, not saader. Funny pronounciation. Cool vid though. What's the point in tinning though?

  • @Pragmaticalised KEEP THE TIP FROM OXIDIZING!!! HE SAID IT IN THE VIDEO!!! THAT'S WHY I LET CAPS ON!!!

  • nice job

  • Thanks for posting this!

  • my classmates are so dumb, i always said to tin first the wires whenever connecting it to other, they asked me WTF tin??? whats tin? whats that.??and the lead they pronounce it as" its LID" thats how they pronounce the lead,"LID",i corrected them i pronounced like "LED" and they told me, no. led is L.E.D. and lead is LID,, wtf.

  • @001248426017 haha well, dumb asses will always be dumb. usually these people don't ask questions because they are so smart. misinformed know it all say stupid non sense just to make you wrong. i just love keep cornering them to say even more stupid shit

  • Like the inline splice previously used pig splice

  • Thanks for the video, lots of helpful tips. Basically you changed the way I solder.

  • Is this safe to do inside??

  • Thank you man! Really appreciate it!! :D

  • Great video man. Simplest one out there and right to the point on basic soldering techniques.

  • Thanks. Now I know why I could not do it.

  • salmon. solder

  • i like to clean my tip on a magazine or scrap piece of paper too

  • @illuminatioracle HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

  • You make it look so easy. Know to practice.

  • There is an 'L' in the word 'solder'. Pronounce it please. This video is unbearable.

  • @michaelspeers001 In the United States, we don't pronounce the word with the "L." He is saying it correctly. Just because a letter is in a word doesn't necessarily mean it is pronounced...do you pronounce the "K" in knife?

  • @tombomb407 All good points but the English devised English we make the rules!!!!!! wooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @tombomb407 Yes, there are many words with consonants at the beginning that are not pronounced; 'knife' has a silent 'K'. I can not understand how a silent 'L' has been integrated into the word 'solder', which has a vowel preceding it...that's like not pronouncing the 'L' in 'colder'.

  • @michaelspeers001 The Person who invented the solder called it a "so-l-de-r", so just fucking go with it!

  • what if i use those kind of pen solder? what if its not resin cored?

  • where can i get a resin cored? other than radioshack.....

  • great tips - i'm going to keep this vid open as i begin my first soldering adventure :)

  • Great vid, mate. I learned alot of good tips.

  • lol its a crocodile clip

  • your a good teacher.A+

  • Woooow ! Thanku brother

  • whats the name off the holding tool at 03:03?

  • @svanteman2 alligator clip

  • thanks. crystal clear!

  • Thanks, this video is very helpful. I have a question. I think I've overtinned my iron or something, is it normal for the iron to change colors when you are using it? When I turn mine on, the tip area and the metal shaft leading up to it turn dark/black. The tip itself usually is not because I tin it, but the other areas do.. Also, if I leave it in the stand on for a minute or two, the tip starts to darken. I also have a hard time getting excess tin off the tip. Is this normal?

  • Thumbs up if you wanted to fix your XBox 360 Controller!

  • @Veehmot i wached this to change the ring of lights

  • very helpful .. thank u

  • Haha

  • Thank you now I know where I went wrong trying this on motorcycle ignition wires last night. I had never done this before but thanks to your video I am confident it will be much easier now!

  • Thanks for the upload. Nice vid. (:

  • s-old-ering not sodder aghhhhhh

  • @Emzipoo0777 apparently that's how they pronounce it in America.

  • @Emzipoo0777 do you like my s-word it is sharp how about that cool p-teradactyl

  • THANKS A LOT!

  • @2001358056 pussy

  • my finger has fallen off during soldering any tips?

  • @WillandAnishFilms sold it back

  • Okay, I just want to make sure I understand fully. You use the iron (after tinning it) to heat the wire, and then melt the solder directly on to the wire? Also I noticed you seemingly did it 3 times on the same wire... or were those all different wires? Do you need to do more than one "coat," so to speak?

  • Thank you for teaching me how to sodder.

  • dude its SOLDER not SODDER damn

  • Its fu*king SOL-dering, with a fuc*king L. I can't wait until all Americans are executed

  • @omgitschrislol Pour some petrol on yourself and go out the back yard and set yourself alight. Your faint glow on Google earth will be more of an accomplishment than the rest of your life from now on

  • @omgitschrislol don't care, so longs you do it. In fact all you hicks do it, do that the whole country is just one big fireball. Don't forget to light your children on fire first, otherwise we will!

  • @F0XD0NUT AL-U-MI-NUM

  • Is normal for smoke to be coming out of the handle? Not the tip of the soldering iron, but the handle?

  • Solder follows heat, flux helps the heat transfer and solder flow.

My training has you tin the tips of the wire, 3/4 inc as you say. slide in the heat shrink that will cover the joint. Form small hooks on the ends and hook them together. Flux the connection and go in with the hot iron only adding enough to get a good solder joint. Clean flux and slide the heat shrink back over and shrink it. Flux is your friend, A little solder is enough. Flicking the solder could splatter your project.

  • Wow, it has been difficult to find a good, informative video on soldering. Finally the information that I need! Thank you very much for the greatly informative video!

  • Helpful video, thanks. But why do all you Americans say "sodder"? It's got an l in it. It's called "sol-der"

  • @francisb1977 Is it sal-mon or seh-mon. What about almonds? Do you pronounce the t in often? Americans drive on the left, the British on the right, but I much prefer to drive on the kerb. It's so much more social that way.

  • What would be the best way to securer your wire so it doesn't move when you're soldering inside you car for speaker and headunit wires?

    Cheers Brad

  • Can I use a soldering gun?

  • Wow I would have done it way wrong haha thanks

  • thanks

  • How long does it take before it's cold?

  • @one1mj

Normally, you can touch solder within 20 seconds of releasing the iron away, normally alot less than that. I'd say give it about seven seconds or more just to be sure. It will harden within a couple seconds from the iron being taken away though.

  • great how-to vid. Thanks for posting

  • I did exactly opposite and ...it was bad :-) thank you so much ...now i know how to .....i will try

  • Good vid for me as i haven't picked up a soldering iron since i was about 10, time to see if can solder or not.. All solder in the UK are now lead free (so i`m told) bah more money :(

  • hey Coldrestart or anyone who can help hey what do yall do for the rosin core as in its dangerous and can cause asthma and cancer could you please give your opinion and tell what i should do? i want to learn how to solder please help!!!

  • Thanks so much! It helped me out a lot!

  • Thank you so much. i had to solder for the first time yesterday and watching this video made it so much easier.

  • that is way easier than i imagined.

  • I have the same gun, the same solder and followed this to a tee, yet mine didn't melt that nicely...why not tell us in the video how long you applied heat to the wire to make it melt like that (45 minutes).

  • Great video Sir.

  • BAM! Just like BUTTA!

  • i cant even do that with my soldering iron

  • what is soder?,, i think its solder

  • @21lausa yes, but i believe it is pronounced soder.

  • nice video, thanks.

  • How do you Strip the insulation off of the wire?

  • @YoshiLover2012 wire strippers

  • What was that solder again?

  • All the time I was soldering the wrong way...

  • Thank you very much for taking the time to post this.

I will now attempt to solder for the first time with your help.

  • I am trying to solder hooking wire to the wires of a light socket, however the hooking wire is solid and the light socket wires are the frayed kind. Would you recommend just twisting the little wires around the hooking wire and soldering it all together like that?

    Thanks so much!

  • thank you it helped

  • so many comments with SO MANY WORDS! xD

  • I'm not sure about the new way they go about burying individual comments with a profound respect for quarreling people.

Besides that, who wouldn't do this? Soldering kicks ass. Like, that was my comment. But whatever. I'm drunk.

  • At 4:10 did you tin the iron without cleaning it? What was that?

  • Finally... A Soldering tutorial that's actually quick and simple to learn from. Thanks man, you've helped me quite a bit with this. Now I've just got to buy a few metres of wire to fix the interior and boot lights in my car...

  • why doesnt my solder flows easily? I get lumps of solder ...do you know why? thanks in advance

  • Great Vid. perhaps you might want to wear your sweater around the right way next time.

    lol

  • I hate the way Americans say "soldering" - damn it learn to speak properly...

  • @roycruse

I hate the way people from the UK obnoxiously discriminate against America...

  • @coldrestart you suck!

  • What on earth is sodder?

  • @2001358056 Lead-free solder works fine and is the standard in many parts of the world now. They've banned lead solder in Europe for health reasons. However, lead-free solder mixes melt at higher temperatures than leaded solder, so they might be a bit harder to use.

  • @coldrestart thanks Ive read about it and I wouldve still done it wrong if it wasnt for the video ;D very helpfull!

  • @coldrestart I disagree, lead free solder is a nightmare for electronics. By using it for electronics your asking for trouble unless you are very experienced.

  • Thanks a lot, very educational

  • I think I am doing it right, but my solder wont melt. Anyone know why? I heat the wire and hold the solder above it or right on the wire, but that doesn't seem to melt it. How long would I have to hold it into that position?

  • @Saberoith is it hot enough? is it touching the wire?

  • @Saberoith It could be two problems. One is that you have solder without flux. Without flux the heat won't transfer well from the soldering iron to the solder and the workpiece. Otherwise, if you're using lead-free solder, those alloys melt at higher temperatures than solder with lead. If you have flux-core lead-free solder that won't melt, use a hotter soldering iron, or look for lead-free solder with low melting points.

  • @Saberoith I had the SAME EXACT problem. Just plug it into a different power outlet, or get a new soldering iron from radio shack for $8

  • Thx

  • Great video man

  • Awesome

  • VERY informative video! Thanks!

  • excellent video.

  • THANK YOU! This worked SO well.

  • Thanks alot , you are a good teacher :D

  • @coldrestart i have read somewhere that you shouldn't twist the cables together

you should instead put the side by side (Parallel)

so which one is correct, you or what i read ?

  • @labobo The advantage of just laying the wires side by side is that it's probably easier to make a more streamlined joint than when twisting the wires together. Old-school thinking was always create a good mechanical bond before soldering, but personally I don't know that it makes that much of a difference.

  • @labobo However, it's going to be more difficult to create a good solder joint when just laying the wires side by side and keeping them together/aligned during the soldering. But if you can get a good solder joint I don't think it matters that much which method you choose.

  • NNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • very easy ans interesting. i am still smiling : ) thanx

  • Wow, 45 times that dude said sodler. That's at least 10 times a minute. Nice!

  • @FelixKey get a life....at least he's helpful

  • @Fnorg1290 can't take a joke huh?

  • @Fnorg1290 By the way, nice comeback

  • Are all of you watching this so you can fix your LCD TV?

  • 666,006th viewer :)

thx for the vid :) got 98 on our project! :)

  • the sowder?? lool..

  • i have a question. My 40w soldering iron has pointed tip, you said that when you solder joints, you must heat the wire..im wondering because when you do it at 4:11, the wire heated up fast, just like magic, but when i do it, the solder wont flow freely to the wire..instead it becomes a mercury-like ball. and one time when i did it, the insulation of the wire melted but the solder didn't!

  • okie... today morning i just realized i slept on my glasses and the joints broke, its a plastic body with metal joint, i thought il superglue it, but the joint itself is broken. the only thing i can think of fixing this is solder, but i dont know how! i cant use the method u showed, cant afford a new pair of glasses until next month! dont want to tape it either! if there are other ways to fix it please tell me!

  • Why do Americans say Solder wrongly?

  • @crackspider101 because they don't know how to speak english properly...

  • @crackspider101 Why do british spell color wrong?

  • @Willettes1 I think you'll find we spell it correct. As we invented the language :)

  • @LeBronFilms I'm pretty sure you just stole it from the tribes going into britain

  • @LeBronFilms not interfering but um since British people made modern English, The Britain spells it correct and the Americans are wrong.

  • @irockas Thats what I said. I'm English.

  • @irockas Language spelling and pronunciation is not determined by it's initial origin after the archaic language has spread. It is determined by the spelling and pronunciation of the people who speak it.

  • @irockas I don't think the British "made" modern English...a language's origins are much more complex than that.

  • @waterkeeper511 American English is actually a bit closer to Middle English than British English. American settlers were isolated from England and thus the language did not shift the same way - a situation mildly similar to Icelandic and its Old Norse similarities. The Middle English spelling of "solder" was "soudour", hence why Americans pronounce it like "sodder". The L appeared in England later, but Americans were isolated and thus it stayed without the L.

  • @crackspider101 From Merriam-Webster

    sol·der - noun \ˈsä-dər, ˈsȯ-, British also ˈsäl-dər, ˈsōl-\

    Both pronunciations are accepted.

  • Thanks, very helpful. I dont have the chip that I have to solder yet but I might get it

  • What's oxidation?

  • @jaesong it's like rust

  • Thank You!

  • Very cool

  • Very helpful video, thanks very much. :)

  • Bravo, everyone needs to get back to the basics every now and then
