@TevMorales Yes this is Styx it's the Opening Track from their album Edge Of The Century their only studio album with Glen Burtnik who replaced Tommy Shaw who was with Damn Yankees at the time
Maybe it's just me, but I rarely find a music video that is as good as the song, and this is no exception. This video makes no sense to me, it's random and kinda jerky and annoyingly flashy...but OMG THIS SONG IS SO GOOD. Styx is frigging amazing, miles ahead of most of the stuff coming out nowadays.
For everyone that says this is crap I only have two things to say. One, you don't have to listen to this; just hit the backspace on your keyboard and be on your way. Two, I would LOVE to see you make something better; can't do it? Well I don't really think I'm very surprised.
funny thing is Glen didnt do this song like this when he was in his own band.I'm a big follower since the early 80s at the Stone Pony in jersey. Dont care for this version. Glen is a simple muscian, give him an acoustic guitar and he makes music. I was happy for him joining Styx but he was never excepted in that band by the fans.
Mmhmm he makes them like 80's retro rock xD Which I love. But have you noticed they are like changing as they get older..I don't like it :( im 14 and have grown up with them and it's makin' me sad seeing it happen.
Styx minus Tommy Shaw and added Glen Burtnik. This is also from 1990 and it fit right in with music at that time. But agree, the classic stuff is better... but Glen Burtnik was a great find for the band.
Damn I remember this being on the radio a lot...Never saw the vid until now... Always liked the bass line...I always thought this guy was a better singer than that other guy
You are right. I remember WHJY played the Hell out of this tune in late 1990. The song flopped on the pop charts but did well on the Mainstream Rock Charts where it reached #9. MTV did air this clip a few times. One of which was in November, 1990. EotC was a great record. I also liked the artwork Hugh Syme did for the album (Hugh Syme is most famous for his series of Rush classic covers like Moving Pictures, 2112, A Farewell to Kings, Signals and every album since 1975's Caress of Steel)
I guess 18 years later I find less and less to truly dislike about this song. But when it first appeared as the lead-off single from the forthcoming Styx reunion album Edge Of A Century in 1990 it was truly bewildering. First of all it didn't even remotely resemble anything Styx had released before. Secondly they had the "new guy" both writing and singing it. No wonder the single died at #80. The album didn't really start selling until the Dennis DeYoung ballads started rolling out.
You got that right!! And this still sounds very good!! You can hear 'Dennis's back ground vocals & keyboards giving it the polished "STYX" I still recognized!! This album should have sold more!! 'Dennis' always left the door wide open for 'Tommy' to return & look how he betrayed him!! Shame on the new "STYNX" - "STYX" IS THE RUTUAL!!!
Tommy and the guys where ready in the late 80's but Dennis was not.. HE was Doing his Hutch Back stuff and by the time Dennis was ready Tommy joined Damn Yankees....
Tommy made solo albums at a faster speed than Dennis and JY. DDY finished his third solo effort Boomchild album in 1988. By the time promo for Boomchild finished in 89, he was ready for Styx but Tommy went to Damn Yankees which stunk and sounded like 80s hair metal (Shaw did no leads in DY and Nuge did all solos). JY also did a second solo effort Out on a Day Pass prior to Styx's 1989/90 reunion. The Panozzos were more ready than Styx's three chief writers who had the solo bug.
Glad to see Glen Burtnik got Styx to rock out a bit, as opposed to those elevator-muzak, limp-crooning-balladeer, Broadway-style stuff Dennis DeYoung insists on writing.
I didn`t know Styx tried some glam stuff during that time, it`s pretty weird
