This track is simply magical.I'm 48 years old, and both my "Kids" LOVE this...coz I Brainwashed them!!!. however, being "a total Strangler" ,(so I like to think) I actually feel that the track "Relentless" from "Suite XVI" actually eclipses this track.
Bands like The Stranglers were the benchmark for so many others. When folks started to realise they were not "punks" and had true talent, they produced some of the best music in their era. Despit the absence of Hugh Cornwell, they are still performing today and the songs sound as good as ever. That is quality over 30+ years.
@louis0121 Thank you. I reckon from about 1980 to 1990, I saw them in concert about 20 times and each gig was brilliant. All of the band had ability, and the songs were really tight and together. They had the talent to pen a real cross section of sounds from slow balads and waltzes to piledriver tunes that knocked me out. That and the fact that they never took themselves too seriously, made them an institution and I am glad that The Stranglers were part of my youth.
there is no musicians today its all manufactured .5 boys or girls stood there singing meaningless crap .cant play any instruments or write songs .music started to die early 90s when stock aitken and the other money grabbing twat came on the scene .
These fucking Vikings raped and butchered whole swathes of Northern England back in the 9th/10th centuries... and now it's the turn of the Greasy Islamic Horde to try and have a go. They'll lose.... it may take some time but they always do!
Ok I go back a long way with this track & this wonderful band. Raven sounds as good now as when I first heard it, I just love it & that's the way it is.
I can analyse this track from start to finish which will be of interest to musicians/academics but the bottom line is that this was and is one of the greatest British tracks ever.
They have concocted some great songs over the years. Their last two albums have at least half a dozen gems. I got Norvegicus in 1977, all of it is genius. They were pretty much untouchable when they did this in 1979. Hugh Cornwell was the voice, yet Jean Perma-Young was the correct vocal man on this. It doesn't get any better than this.
Its one of the most "progressive" albums I've ever heard, for example in this song the instruments are playing separate harmonies/melodies for large parts of it - GENIUS !!!
...and yet it all merges together perfectly to form a unique sound. A true band effort and very refreshing. I feel sorry for some bands who just stand there bashing out three or four chord backing tracks while the guitar player goes off on yet another ego trip (yawn). As you quite rightly say...GENIUS.
@lewisself what I meant is, every generation claims that the new music is bad. This isn't true at all. You seem to be forgetting that the airwaves were dominated by silly, vacuous music during the stranglers time too. My generation is making amazing music, but its soooooo much more difficult to get attention in today's intolerably over-saturated market. Today's music industry is worse, yes, but the music isn't.
@digglescham Totally agree. When I was a teenager in the early 80s, we hated the music that was in the charts then, we bought 60s and 70s stuff. Yet I play the 80s stuff now as it reminds me of my youth and therefore nostalgic. The amount of times I have seen post sby young Folk claiming that their generations music is crap compared to way back when, but the fact is as time goes on, it is harder to sound unique and in time we will look back on this era and appreciate "some" music produced now.
@digglescham it has always been this way. Programmes work to dilute anything of quality from the heart. The internet although closely monitored is a great avenue for artists. Quality finds quality.
@digglescham I see what you're saying but the actual music industry has become so obsessed with profit for pleasure that the standards have slipped in favour of $'s "New music",exists when it has something to offer and the industry has hampered the development of so many innovative acts as they're not a "safe bet".Comparing the inventive, explosion of musicians/songwriters from mid/late '70's to early '80's is nice but I hear a lot of Joy Division,Cure,Pistols soundalikes. But not original quality
up-helly-aa in Cornwall? It's only verging on 32 but, yeah, still causes goose bumps and not goo dumps. Strang's finest hour. How bigger in Portugal could they get? They Opened the mythic 9-day edtion of Vilar de Mouros 1982 festival, subtle as M4 Shermans. Ha, time machines me...
