the message is scary, yes. his work is clean and reinforces the fact that this is a fictional tale (albeit one that speaks of reality in considerably familiar tones).

This one seems to message to most thinkers about the media and it's detriment. I think of it also like Neil Gaiman's 'american gods', how we give power of belief to forces we don't fully understand; if we inspect closely, we can at least notice a predatory style to the thing, and that should be warning enough.
