  • OKAY CAN YOU SHOW VIDEO OR EXPLAIN HOW TO PIPE THE OVER FLOW BOX. I GOT A OVERFLOW BOX LIKE YOURS BUT AM TRYING TO USE 1" VIVYL TUBING I GOT TWO STRIPS IN THERE WITH 1" 1/$' TUBE CONNECTING THE TWO AND SILICONEED WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE

  • can i build this for a 130g saltwater tank?

  • @x4feetunderx you can but i suggest desgining a sw specific sump with a refugium and no bioballs. I will be making one for a 120g sw and will post a diy on youtube.

  • Nice come see mine on my page.

  • how many gallons is that clear bin??

  • I'd like to see the bottom of the bucket.. And is the bio balls on the bottom of the bucket submerged ???

  • Bro Your Like The Best Video Here On You tube. I have a question how do you get the water back up to the tank! I Understand Everything But That!

  • I used wet dry filters until I found moving bed filtration, also I gave my bio balls away after finding K1 filter media

  • make sure you have a hole where so it doesn't siphon back????

  • Great informative video; one question. By the end of the video you say "make sure you have a hole," may I ask which component do you refer by this? Thank you!

  • what did you mean about the whole so the water wont siphon back? pls let me know Im in a process of making a 40 gallon tub into a sump for a 240 and need some advise thanks in advance

  • dont trust those plastic boxes double up they dont last for long. use the colored boxes. great use of stuff for a cheap system. very good ideas.

  • Yes some are not suitable but not all are so bad. Ive been using my clear box for 4 years now with no problems. Color doesnt really matter as some of the colored one are cheap as hell. Just make sure to get one that is nice and sturdy or just double up as stated.

  • @seedlessone is the bucket cut into 2 and u drill holes in the bottom part and place it on toP?

  • Hi, How do u start the syphon. also do the U tube go to another box at the back of the tank or do they go straight to the sump?

  • The syphon is started by placing a small piece of airline into the large utube directly in the middle of it. Suck until it starts. And yes there is another box before it runs down into the sump. when you purchase your overflow box it will have all this and instructions of how to get it started.

  • how doees the water get from the overflow box to the sump is it pumped

  • he mentioned "make sure you have a hole so it won't get syphon back..."

I would like to know where about on that return tube I should make that hole...any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance

  • The hole needs to be above you tank water line.

  • thanks, I am trying to set my tank up like your but currently having problem locating the U shape tubing. thanks once again

  • the u-shaped tubing? you mean in the overflow?

when you buy an overflow it comes with the tubing.

drsfostersmith . com has a great overflow

its made by eshopps. i have one and it works like a dream. they are inexpensive as well.

  • i put mine just below the water line so u dont hear the splashing because at 1000+gph u get a strong spray. if u dont do this u will come home and have a massive clean up.

  • when i get a bigger fish tank im going to do this setup!!!! thanks man!

  • sweet, how did you match the input to output for your sump? match the flow in to match flow out? thanks alot

  • the overflow can only flow out as much as your pump is flowing in.

    like this.

say you had a 300GPH overflow...

if the pump was only pushing 150GPH, your overflow would be flowing 150GPH

if the pump was pushing 250GPH

your overflow would be flowing 250GPH

however, if your pump was pushing 350GPH, it would be too fast for the overflow.

as long as the pump isnt too fast for the overflow, then its fine

so, you could buy a 800GPH overflow and a 600GPH pump.

  • wow, cool. Now it makes sense, great thanks a lot!

  • @cichlidkeeper89

how many G'sPH (GPH) overflow system/box thingy do i need fora certian size gallon tank. im sorta new to this and im looking to upgrade from my 16 gal freshwater to a 60 or 75 gal display tank with my old 10 gal tank as a sump. say i did get the 60 gallon tank; what GPH overflow do i need for it? :)

  • @beechcraft12 id say.... 300GPH should do ya good. but, if u wanna go higher, it wouldnt hurt. just remember, make sure that your return pump moves water fast enough. hees an example.. my overflow box is rated at 300GPH. wen i first got it, i used a pump rated at 135GPH. the overflow box ran so slow, that it would get bubble in the u-tube and break siphon. so, i upgraded to a 255GPH pump, and have had no problems for 8 months.

  • @cichlidkeeper89

sounds great to me. thank you for the info :)

  • @beechcraft12 i have a 55 gallon, my overflow/return pump set up has proven to be quite efficient.

    Overflow- ESHOPPS PF- 300

Return pump- MARINELAND MAXI-JET 1800. 475 GPH. 255GPH@ 4 feet head hight. (if your tank rim is at least 3-4 feet from your sump, if your tank is lower to the ground, and closer to your sump, you will need a smaller pump)

they an both be found at

    fosterandsmithaquatics . com

i have purchased many products from them with no problems.

  • @cichlidkeeper89

    coool :)

  • do you have the botoms cut out of your 5 g buckets with eggcrate or something on the bottom or just holes drilled in bottom of buckets?

  • does this make the room smell bad?

  • I wash them with tank water about once a year.

  • how often do you clean the bio ball?

  • never

if you clean them you are killing all the benificial bactiria that grow on them

  • just wonderful!!

  • Never mind, I figured it out. My Q's were all ansered by the pump technical info on its box. BTW I decided against having a sump after all. I thought the noise of water streaming AL THE TIME was not what I could bear up with

  • I undesrtand why the pump should have smaller flow rate than the overflow siphone, but the pump also needs to have enough manometeric head to push the water back to the tank up above.. So could you clarify a liitle more on relative height of the pump and overflow? Also knowing the GPH of ur pump should be serve as prototype.

    tks!

  • 1200 gph overflow with a 950gph pump

  • tks!

  • jank!

  • thanks

  • how many gallons is your tank? Why do you need that huge filter?!?!?

  • 125g with a 35ish gallon sump. I have a overstocked piranha tank that requires a lot of filtration.

  • At the end you said put a hole in the return to prevent siphoning back to the sump. Where is the hole?

    Thanks.

  • put a hole in your return line that is above your tank water level.

  • shouldn't the hole be slightly below the water line?

  • What kind of return pump u have dude? can your sump could work in reef tank? what kind of over flow box is that? how much is it dude? wanna be friends? can u give me more videos of your sump thanks?

  • how do you perfectly match the flow of the siphon out of your tank and the flow of the pump back into your tank. i tried for 3 hours on my homemade sump and gave up. please let me know.

  • your pump should be a little smaller than your overflow. So from there your overflow box will regulate how much water enters your sump.

  • where do you get the filter media?

  • this is without a doubt the most ghetto overflow/sump sit up I have ever seen. I used a commercial overflow box and built a sump out of a smaller aquarium.....This is so ghetto...lol

    todd

  • LOL you have no idea what you are talking about if you think this DIY wet/dry is ghetto....This is one the better DIY design Ive yet to see. Good job at getting raped at the LFS buying a sump....Mine works just as well as any other sump. It would of cost me $500+ for a wet/dry this size...And before you go running at the mouth about a commercial overflow, watch my vid agian...youll see this is also a LFS bought overflow box.

  • What happen if your water turns back on? of course the siphon wont bring down anymore water and your pump would come back pumping water back up and that will make your sump dry and your pump can break? i need some answer because i am making a DIY sump at the moment. feel free to message me =D

  • The overflow box wont lose siphon. So once the power turns back on everything will still be siphoning

  • can you post a video that simulates power going out? i'm interested as wel.
