Any one that still cant afford a car even with this program, will have a tough time finding parts to keep his car on the road. That means less parts available, shops will close, and even if you CAN afford it, you will have less to CHOOSE from. (not everyone can work within walking distance)

I have to agree. Congress does not know the long term implications of what they are doing to the US economy. I saw one video on line with a 2001 HD ford pickup with the V-10 being destroyed. This truck would have made a great part of the business of a contractor or construction worker to do his trade and contribute to the economy. But no, Congress wants those trucks dead so the construction worker will be forced to purchase a new $25k truck instead of purchasing a used $3k truck.
Craigslist and the paper are filled with used trucks people are dying to sell for cheap. Easily 3-4 times more of them then last year. No shortage of cheap used trucks, so what's the big deal if they are scrapped.

No they wouldn't. They would get the same. And no matter whether the engine has 500k miles or 50k miles, it still qualifys if I gets less than 18mpg. And this is a figure by the EPA, not what you experience.
it also depends on the type of motor it is. for example, if it's a 4cyl that gets less than 18 then theres obviously something wrong with it. if it's a 6.0L H2 then you would expect less.

Its not about reliability, its about fuel efficiency. 1997FordProbeGT made a GREAT point that getting 250,000 cars off the road that get below 18mpg is barely gonna make a dent in the CO2 emissions. This is just overall a flawed plan.

Yeah, I would estimate the dealer had anywhere between 50-70 'clunkers'. MOST of them are in good shape too! I wouldnt even consider ANY of them clunkers, just some with broken lenses, a little bit of rust, nothing serious.

Ford makes nearly 1 Million F-150's a year, the world isn't going to miss a few thousand rusty work trucks. Clear out the old, bring in the new! The cars are then crushed and recycled to be made into new F-150s. They are perishable commodities by design, if not today, they would be scrapped soon enough.

Hey, I thought I'd let you know that about 30% of the energy that an automobile uses is during its manufacture. Those already-sunken energy expenditures are being thrown out the window and we are wasting MORE energy manufacturing new ones (Which by the way only have to be 2mpg better)...MORE energy than you would save from the mileage improvement! You guys should educate yourselves. We NEED to get ourselves off foreign oil, and 'drill baby drill' in alaska is not going to do it. We need to start using less gasoline as a country or we are going to collapse as an empire. Read about peak oil, read about the dollar, learn why we are in iraq to stay, learn where oil dollars actually go. this is very necessary and shouldve happened a long time ago. We cannot afford to depend on gas guzzlers anymore. It was a great 50 years but its over.

The idea behind the program is just well doing but the whole reason why I hate this program is that its destroying perfectly good cars, and giving away money THAT WE DO NOT HAVE. Sure if we were in a better economic situation, I would have NO objection to this. Oil is gonna run out eventually and we need to start thinking of new ways to power cars. But as it stands... Okay, but if we FORCE auto makers to start figuring out better fuel economy solutions, they can deeply research and develop it, and eventually we might get a 365HP hybrid... all this technology is still new. Hell look at gas engines, back in the 50s, 60s, they were GUTLESS. But now look at today... a 260HP 4 cylinder Cobalt, 265HP Taurus. You gotta give this time to pan out.

I'm Canadian, and I never even knew about what they are doing until I saw this video that made me so upset to my stomach. I couldn't even watch the whole thing. this is DISGUSTING! Its like watching a baby being choked to death. WHY WHY WHY? Why not resell/donate some of those vehicles to people whom are in need of a reliable vehicle. or at least sell the parts, like Tires/rims, tail/headlights, components etc! This video is where they are going ! The cars are not parted out, they are UNUSABLE . They would not murder the engine if they planned to get anymore use out of it. It is a waste.
Any one that still cant afford a car even with this program, will have a tough time finding parts to keep his car on the road. That means less parts available, shops will close, and even if you CAN afford it, you will have less to CHOOSE from. (not everyone can work within walking distance)

I have to agree. Congress does not know the long term implications of what they are doing to the US economy. I saw one video on line with a 2001 HD ford pickup with the V-10 being destroyed. This truck would have made a great part of the business of a contractor or construction worker to do his trade and contribute to the economy. But no, Congress wants those trucks dead so the construction worker will be forced to purchase a new $25k truck instead of purchasing a used $3k truck.

I was just mentioning that 2008 cars ARE eligible with the trade. But yeah unless you improve 2-5MPG and if its not under 45,000 dollars, its not eligible.

Gotcha, but I can't help but to think that there is a more sinister plan. Perhaps this is the first wave of pulling ALL gas guzzlers off the street and replacing them with gutless econoboxes. Like most laws are incrementally passed: First it is voluntary....then it becomes MANDATORY. It could be accomplished through stricter emissions laws. The means are ecology, while the end is CONTROL. This could be a slippery slope!

See, there is another aspect of it. If you socialize the auto industry, then what keeps them from socializing the health care industry. Then and only then could the gov tell you not only what kind of car you can drive.....but also can dictate the level of health care you are "entitled" to receive. And people are literally BEGGING for it, just like they did for the "bailout." Slippery Slope, indeed!

I should also add that this does not serve the lower economical classes at all. Even at a $4500 discount, A poor person most likely would not be able to keep up with the payments. It also cost a lot more to insure a brand new vehicle then it does an old one.

No they wouldn't. They would get the same. And no matter whether the engine has 500k miles or 50k miles, it still qualifys if I gets less than 18mpg. And this is a figure by the EPA, not what you experience.

it also depends on the type of motor it is. for example, if it's a 4cyl that gets less than 18 then theres obviously something wrong with it. if it's a 6.0L H2 then you would expect less.

Its not about reliability, its about fuel efficiency. 1997FordProbeGT made a GREAT point that getting 250,000 cars off the road that get below 18mpg is barely gonna make a dent in the CO2 emissions. This is just overall a flawed plan.

Yeah, I would estimate the dealer had anywhere between 50-70 'clunkers'. MOST of them are in good shape too! I wouldnt even consider ANY of them clunkers, just some with broken lenses, a little bit of rust, nothing serious.
