My mother plays this on a CD in the car whenever we go anywhere. She sings along and everything... After so many years I've learned to sing a long too :P
Wonderful! I remember Val Doonican's shows on TV in the 70s and I wish there was as much talented entertainment as him on the telly nowadays - sadly there isn't. Great to hear him on you tube though, so I've saved it to my favourites!
a great song. My Dad was irish and loved Val. My mam loved this song as well and wanted all her sons to walk tall and make her proud. She was very proud. ...Declan
Good to hear this after so long. Takes me back to when I was in school, we had a techy teacher with a violent disposition that hid a heart of gold. I was going off the rails a bit at the time and one day he told me to stay behind. He gave me a lecture on respect and responsibility then beat me senseless with a blackboard ruler. Sounds harsh but I learned a valuable lesson. When I regained the power in my legs I joined the Salvation Army and took to reading psalms. Thanks for the memory.
@herringfly i enjoyed this reminiscence, thanks! Particularly "the violent disposition that hid a heart of gold". It made me wonder about whether my old headmaster engaged in beating us with gym shoes to conceal a similarly soft centre
Thank you so much...all my children and grand-children love this too...what a great voice...we used to watch the "Val Doonican Show" on TV in the 60's
probably the youngiest poster for this song but i love Val Doonican im 17 and hes a legend im so glad my grandad liked him epic song epic voice epic guy !
The guys a legend. Each line is a good piece of advice. 44 now and heard it when I was a small child. Pity i didn't take heed. means a lot now though. I now walk tall as Val says
Do you know, this is the first song I ever remember liking. I was about 4 I think. I remember looking at those funny grooves cut in his guitar and thought to myself ' I bet Val's done that so that he can calculate the area of his strings under his guitar bridge' When I told my mum she said 'Don't be so ridiculous son. I think you're destined to become a dustman!'
i loved this for years and lissoned it all my child hood im 49 and still love it just the same many thanks brilllllllllllllllllll i love all vals songs
They did - last year at Palladium for his 80th Birthday with John Williams, Frank Carson, Bradley Walsh, Nana Mouskouri and Rolf Harris - the night was sensational and I was AMAZED at how good Val Doonican was (I am young!)
Thank you, Paula ~ RitzyKitzys ~ for thinking of me enough to share this great song with me! I had never heard of Val Doonican before! Thanks for posting, checkdis55! Five stars!!
Went to the London Palladium last October to celebrate Val's 80th Birthday - Superb - and I am too young to remember him from rocking chair days! It was also my only opportunity to salute and bid goodbye to Nana Mouskouri (she was a special guest star!) Absolutely bloody brilliant night
lmao...it's sick but kind of funny to see dear Val Doonican inspiring such insanely profane rants...Musicatty, Val's still alive. You've still got a chance. Go for it!!! *sheesh*
Yes, my Mum and I loved this song, and the whole album it came with. Val's the BEST.
When Val sings this song, in that fuckin lovely deep voice of his, I just get so fuckin horny I could fuck the guy sitting next to me....seriously! And he's a dirty old cunt. Thanks for sharing this sexy bastard with us all!
This is a great song....didn't he go on to form the German industrial rock band Rammstein? I think he changed his name to Till Lindemann or something? He's put on a bit of weight now but still fuckin hot!
