In larger helicopters, decreasing collective can save you from dynamic roll over. You'd have to be ready for it to really save a helicopter that small. Especially with how close together the skids (not sure what they are called) are.
dam shame how much flight time have you have ,did you cycle compensate for lift off ,seems like no body was at the controls, these are like most larger helis except in yaw , they are a bit twitchy but a lesson keep at it
@borntosurf2 The Mosquito handles pretty much like every helicopter I've flown: Huey, Dauphin, A-Star, Bell 427, MD 500, Bell Jet Ranger, Enstrom, Schweitzer (turbine & piston) and several experimental types, co-axial and tail rotor designs. The lag time between control input and response is determined by the pendulum length of the main rotor mast. It takes a few seconds to get in sync with any new helicopter.
I had a dream to build and fly a home built helicopter a while ago. but soon realized that you cant cut corners to save money in aviation. If you cant afford what the professionals make. its probably better to stay on the ground. But I do admire your work. it Is great that you where able to complete a project like this. the only homebuilt I would fly Is a fixed wing. I think its much safer and more reliable. any ways. Be safe.
@terminusest0 By Throttle down, You mean Collective.. right? remove lift from the equation, and dynamic rollover doesn't happen.. IF you stop it early enough.. once gone too far, there's no stopping it..
@joseppi2219 yes, i mean collective indeed. and i understand that on a certain point gravity takes over, and even with the collective down it won't affect the movement..
One word, VTOL. Of course that's a misnomer and an acronym for four words. A skidding take off might work ok with hocky sticks but pads on grass? I would stick with vertical to a hover, clearing turns then forward cyclic from a three foot hover. Just me mindya. Would love to have one though.
Got those JPGs. Amazing how fast that happens. You might want to try a dye penatrant on the spars and the gears, especially the parts which do NOT look damaged. Brush it on, let it sit for about 5 minutes or so, then wipe it off. Use a "Black Light" and you'll probably see a myriad of microfractures which can't be seen with the naked eye.
A shame really, All that time, talent and treasure which went into the design and construction but at least you weren't hurt.
"Lots of damage in the tail rotor gearbox ...", depending on how bad it is, as silly as this may sound, take a hacksaw or the like to it, same with the tail rotor spars so there's zero chance of either getting back into circulation. Bell, Hughes and others have over the decades had major problems (litigation) because of such events; ie., defective items getting back into "inventory."
Just saw the video. About that parting it out, would suggest not to do that with the tail rotor and associated gearing; they're not made to stop that fast, microscopic fractures are probably in the gearing as well as the tail rotor spars themselves
These need to be computer assisted so accidents like that are reduced. The pilot should only put in commands for hover/land, and direction; not to balance on the bubble like a model helicopter. A 'dumb' heli like that is a death sentence.
@nocalsteve the skid wasn't stuck. He didn't put in a correction as the craft yawed right. You can tell by watching the rotor blade disk before the tip over. I think a computer system with a gyro would compensate for this.
Im glad your ok I watched the video first flight after rebuild what was the final determination for the rollover. I am wanting to get the xe3 I am taking a introductory flight on my birthday cant wait to get the cyclic and collective in my hands
OMG... I am glad you are okay. It looked bad. Looked like a head clipper at first. I am so glad you are okay. get well, and be careful with the next unit. Your in my prayers.
@jlillie2 There appears to be no mechanical fault, just a stuck skid causing the rollover. Will part it out. May get another one, certainly no qualms climbing back on one. Although I think I'll stick to paved surfaces to launch from now on.
Hi Larry, Yea, I second, third & forth that - REAL glad you are OK. That did look nasty. Got a bit scarier when we see no movement afterwards !! God's Speed to you in getting her fixed and back up.
Wow....I'm so bummed. I have watched all your videos as well. I so hope you will rebuild her or get another. You were one of the most active on posting video.
Don't think it's fixable. I'll just get a new one. 530 flights on this machine, got way more than my money's worth out of it. Thanks for your thoughts BlueRidge.
@jerrywsoloflex - Jerry.. just glad you are ok.. you guys are my inspiration.. i watch every video that you and larry put up.. that is my dream to have a mosquito helicopter.. if you cant fix it.. if you get a new one.. will it be an air again or another model (XEL is what i want)
@BlueRidgeRuckus I prefer the open view, the bugs in my teeth so would opt for another Air. The factory thinks the right main skid stuck on the grass, maybe suction. That would cause a dynamic rollover. If I could do it over again I'd definitely dump the collective, fast! I think they call this "experience." Boy, do I have a lot of that...ha
@jerrywsoloflex - Nice.. well.. your experience is helping us unfortunately your mosquito didnt survive :( whenever you get another let us know.. are you going to trash it or ?
Your first immediate thought was to announce that your OK, "I'm OK, I'm OK", before you actually knew for sure that you were OK. Demonstrates a true concern for others above yourself! You are not dead, you are far more alive than most in this universe.
I'm fine. Thanks for your concern Jesse. I should have dumped the collective, had a half-second to decide. My bias is to fly out of trouble. Wrong move.
@jerrywsoloflex How bad is the damage & how long will the repairs take?
Looking forward to a post crash walk around & your assessment of what happened. Really pleased that you're OK though 'cause that spooked me pretty good J. It all happened in the blink of an eye :\
Yes. Thanks for asking. Not sure what broke, if anything, possibly a dynamic roll-over. Will try to determine what happened. If and when I find out I'll post it for other Mosquito owners. In the meanwhile, my wife can stop fretting...ha
How much did that cost.

why doesn't it have wheels that rotate instead of a feet that can get stuck? Or even regular help skids? Seems like a stupid design flaw
