I used to fly and still keep my hand in it . That Auster needs a ton of safety work . In the U.S. it would be grounded till all problems repaired . Honesty it would have not passed a pre-flight insp.Being nice looking doesn't have anything to do with safety .
@xjet G'day... Quite a nice conversion. There are lots of old 'planes that find themselves with "wrong" engines. By the late 70's the 80-87 Octane Avgas was becoming hard to get. To run on 100-130 Octane the Gypsy Major needed High-Compression Cylinder-Heads retrofitted. DeHaviland was extinct, so Amerikan engines were substituted. I've seen a Klemm Swallow, that'd had it's Pobjoy-Niagara Radial replaced by a 100 Hp Lycoming.
That Auster must be worth a mint !! With all the bubblegum and duck-tape Holden it together . Man O Man that thing isn't good enough for parts even .Scary is all I can say !!!
@dochelp1m Would you abandon a car just because of some scratches? The look of the cover doesn't say anything about the safety relevant parts. What do you expect from an old plane which has experienced a long life?
Oi Bruce! If you want to see a variety of De Havilands work pop over to South Mimms (North London) Mosquito Museum run buy enthusiasts for enthusiasts. Although I am now in Jockland I make the pilgrimage whenever I can.. That poor Auster is in need of a bit of TLC..
Was it shot down? LOL

Reminds me of a farm implement more than a plane. That's not a bad thing! Easy to operate, easy to fix, and tough as old boots.

Holy *&^$(^&*%, my Beaver Ultralight looks 100% safer that that thing.
Looks like a rookie mechanic works on that thing!

A lil rough 'round the edges, eh? "Functional" seems to be the key word for this particular example... Thanks for sharing this!
