man this is nuts and this guys is bryant guys is lucky coz with the black youth of today if they dicided to get him no one wuld ever knwo who did with a case like this aint nobody gona snitch but i do hope that nuthin ha[pens to hi or his wifes new fam coz that wuld jsut be deep
@live1234561--WOW-- that's very deep! I think that's a message to you to WAKE UP-- because the world you live in is better than 1955-- but you must make sure that you work to make it even better! Or better yet-- what does it mean to you?
I feel bad for the way he was killed and most of all for his mother honestly. Im not racist im AfroAmerican, I absolutley do not condone his death but you cant deny thats the way it was back then and hell you damn well better believe i would put my hands around a white women and whistle at her in 59 like this kid did. Add that it was the south? Well lets just say you minus well jump off the empirestate peace.....
@jago397-- Emmett Till did not touch her, he only whistled at her. He was killed for whistling at her-- nothing else. His cousins, who are alive today, testified that there was only a "wolf-whistle", and they are interviewed in the documentary. Yes what he did was dumb, considering where he was. But that didn't even come close to justifying they way they kidnapped him, tortured him, lynched him and shot him. Yes he made a mistake, but the guilt for his murder rests with the killers, not Emmett!
@rmetoyer Emmett Till came from Chicago, a city where segregation was not as big as it was in Mississippi. Also his Mother has said that Emmett whistles to alleviate his stuttering, so he may not have been flirting anyway.
@Desttinyy-- Yes it's true that Emmett had no idea that he was angering racists when he whistled at Carolyn Bryant. His mother didn't want to believe that he had whistled at the woman-- that he'd done it to correct his stuttering problem. But his two cousins who were there with him say he did whistle at Bryant-- and that he was showing off. Emmett also begged his cousins not to tell their Uncle what he had done. He made a mistake, but we all agree that it was no reason to murder him!
People whistle at each other all the time. He made no mistake. Only mistake he made was being in a shit hole like Mississippi. The kid did nothing wrong.
@cinemafreak666-- you're preaching to the choir-- and I agree with you 1000 per cent. Whistling was not a mistake-- but where he did it was-- especially since he had been warned that Mississippi was a very dangerous place for blacks-- and warned that he had to be careful. The other mistake he and his cousins made was not telling their uncle Mose about the incident-- because he wound have sent Emmett back home to Chicago if he had known. But no-- Emmett did nothing wrong!!
@rmetoyer Sorry, but what Emmett Till did WAS NOT dumb. How in the world could you even say something like that??? What those racist bigots did was dumb. Who in the world beats a 14-year-old child to death, beyond recognition, then shoots him, weighs his body down and dumps it in a river?? Emmett Till did NOTHING wrong.
@Miss407-- Whistling at a white woman in Mississippi in 1955 was a DUMB thing for a black teenager to do, especially since Emmett was warned before he left Chicago. We AGREE he did NOTHING wrong, but he forgot where he was. He was murdered by racists who would have killed him for not getting off of the sidewalk to let them pass and they thought they had the right to kill him! That was the evil of Mississippi and Emmett's murder exposed that hatred for the whole world to see.
@Miss407 we can say two things here he was wring as in he didnt know the ways of the south but that does not excuse a racial muder its coom sense taht u dont kill children if anyone at all but we do live ina world where engand and america can wage war of other countries by claimin they have wmds while those of us at home know better but dont do shit about it btw the second scenario was not a compariosn to emmets im jsu pointin on hwo screwed up the world is
@ilinaeternity-- look we can argue forever about whether or not it was a dumb thing to do. I say it was dumb because he was warned-- and because I raised two kids who did dumb things all the time-- when they became teenagers. Kids do dumb things-- like showing off to each other. But we agree on everything else entirely-- he was innocent of doing anything wrong! He didn't understand or believe that he could be killed for that whistle. The real villains were his hateful killers!!
@rmetoyer I mean he didn't know the ways of the south. You can't call someone dumb if they aren't even aware of the circumstances (and they aren't unaware deliberately). But we're on the same page. It was a terrible, horrific thing:(.
@LegoMasterPibi-- Well that's one way of looking at it; but I think you're missing the point. He was murdered for simply whistling at the woman, which is not even a crime. What you're saying is like this-- "If JFK hadn't gone to Dallas in 1963-- he wouldn't have been assassinated"! But JFK did go there, and the people who murdered him are still guilty. Emmett Till was visiting his uncle, not his father. You're right If his uncle had known what had happened he would have sent him back to Chicago.
@rmetoyer Hell know what you just compared is completely stupid no offense. Jfk had no idea would happen. This kid had no commen sense. Everyone in those days knew it was not a smart idea to talk to white women. He did. He was cocky and thought he was above the unspoken law of the south back then. Its wrong but thats just the way it was. Littel kid was so brash he talked and kept talking till they beat the shit out of him. Then they killed him out of rage. Sorry about this kids death but hey....
@jago397-- With all due respect-- it sounds like you are blaming Emmett for his own death and that is backwards. He was just a kid and he didn't understand the consequences of his actions. Nothing he did removes the guilt from his murderers. They KILLED him, and THEY are guilty. You say JFK didn't know he would be killed; but do you think Emmett would have whistled if he really thought he'd be killed for it? Wake up and put blame WITH THE KILLERS and a racist system, not the victim!
@rmetoyer No im sorry me at 12 knew not to go to certain areas because of racism. THIS WAS 2004! Hell i would of known at 14 that this shit was not acceptable in 59. When in rome do as the romans do. I know its completely wrong. I would be more angry and feel sorry for the guys that were accused of shit like this but still got killed. This kid was no martyr for our people! He was a idiot in a fucked up situation. Im not trolling thats just how i feel. He was warned and he still disobeyed sad.
@jago397-- Yes kids do dumb things everyday even now. But the killers had no right to kill him. If they hadn't murdered Emmett -- they would have killed another black boy for no reason. Emmett wasn't the first young black man who was killed for nothing. The racists didn't like him because he was a Northerner and they thought he was "uppity"! They were also mad at other Northern blacks for registering blacks to vote. The Emmett Till case helped to bring all those other murders to light.
@jago397 actually jfk knew what what happen u dont enter into a system liek amricaan presidency by being an idiot he knew full well what wuld happen hell malcom before he was kiled said he was a dead man walkin point is u dont get into sumthin that big empty minded
@xReapeR217 I got the email on your question but I see your response is gone. The truth is-- Emmett Till did not ask Carolyn Bryant for a date-- or even touch her. The story you heard was concocted by the racists to help to justify the murder. He did whistle, as was retold by his two cousins who went to the store with him.
the comments of that last racist hater have been removed. He is blocked from this channel and has been reported to You Tube. His statements are in violation of You Tube Policy. Racist language on this page will not be tolerated and will be reported.
@mostdopeKID11 Blacks contributed nothing to the world? How about being the biological fathers of the entire human race? That in itself already surpasses any contributions that other races have made to this world. Anyway, go and commit suicide --- it is very clear that you would not be missed by anybody. =D
I don't understand why the two men accused of killing him were aquitted all charges, even after they admitted they did it to some magazine for I think like 10,000. I bet they're burning in hell though, so I guess it doesn't matter now.
What amazes me is the people in the video acting as if Emmett did something wrong by whistling. Emmett owed no one an apology for whistling at a white woman. How insecure do you have to be to kill a 13 year old for whistling and your woman?
@loupremo-- I would disagree with you that anyone in this video is suggesting that Emmett was wrong for whistling at a white woman. His two cousins who were there and his mother who warned him were trying to tell him that he headed to a dangerous place. Blacks were expected to lower their heads and get off of sidewalks when white people approached them. That's the way the South was then and they were trying to warn Emmett how to survive. No-- Emmett did nothing wrong-- but he was still murdered!
How can anyone even TRY to justify His killing? The hearts of white people (many, but not all) pumped nothing but hatred through their veins back then. Presently, it has been replaced with cold indifference. Emmet was just one of many blacks to suffer from the almost primitive mind-set of racist white sub-humans. I pray that an after life exists where white supemacists are made to FEEL the horrors that they have inflicted upon others simply because they had more melanin in their skin.
For years before the slaying, the numerous Milam-Bryant clan had operated a chain of small stores in the Delta, stores dependent on Negro trade. Its still hard to understand and believe that these two had done this to that 'child'only 14 years old.Shocking..and very upsetting to know that these people actualy did this?? (Animals!)They was meaning to beat and torture this boy,of corse they was, call that being taught a lesson and sent back to his home land? No they took his life.
Ray - thanks for your response. Also - don't know what compelled me to do so, but I called Roy Bryant prior to his death when he lived in Ruleville, posed as a reporter and said he would "talk" for money. Even dying with cancer, no remorse, was still livid that he never made a nickel on the Life expose' and claimed Emmett Till ruined his life. I suppose the formula of 9th grade education + IQ around 70 + racial hatred ingrained in him since the day he was born = the death of Emmett Till.
I have and will continue to remove all recent hate speak comments from this page. Emmett Till's death, as tragic as it was, helped to jump start the American Civil Rights movement. Black and whites marched together for changing the segregation laws in this country. I understand being angry at the murderers; but that's no excuse to attack all white people. Without white support, the Civil Rights movement never would have succeeded. Please keep that in perspective.
Ray - great job. It haunts me every time I see the grossly disfigured face of Emmett. Tongue pulled out, teeth knocked out, an ear cut off, BOTH eyes gouged out, the bridge of his nose chopped on, and finally shot it the head. I also read an account that they drove a screwdriver in his ear?? I shudder just thinking of the torture. All that's been claimed is "We pistol-whipped him." Obviously it was much more than that. Has there EVER been a detailed account of what went on in the barn?
@howboutyomama I haven't really seen a detailed report of what happened to Emmett in that barn. You can assume that he was badly beaten and shot, then thrown in the river, attached to a huge factory fan. Most of his injuries were probably from the beating. But also remember that he was underwater for a time-- and there's no telling what happened to his body in the river-- including being attacked by fish. There was no autopsy by the sheriff, nor did they try to preserve his body for burial.
@rmetoyer The killers gave an interview to a Magazine and they detailed how they killed the boy after they were found NOT guilty of Killing him. The so called Double Jeopardy clause was in effect to protect the criminal from being charged twice with the same crime. That is what I call Criminal Justice in America, because the Criminal has always gotten Justice in the court systems.
@sesostres-- that's true-- especially at that period in American history. Keep in mind these killers were tried by a jury of their peers, and they were all white. They didn't believe that Bryant had done anything wrong. Also remember that the jury pool comes from registered voters-- and blacks weren't allowed to register to vote. That's part of the reason that blacks from the north were considered to be troublemakers. Emmett Till was hated because he was black and from the north.

I am not being racist when I say this, but here is my take: He whistled at a white girl in the South in 1955. I don't care how many "white girls" he had in Chicago. If you were black back then, you didn't do that, especially in the South.
@mkl62 -- That is not a racist comment-- and trust me Emmett was warned about what he had to do to survive in that society. But he was a kid and he was showing off for his cousins. He didn't know what he was doing and what the consequences might be. He was just playing around-- but his cousins knew.
The issue is this-- was his whistling at Carolyn Bryant justification for his murder? The answer is NO-- and that's why millions of Americans were appalled and stood up against this kind of hatred.
@rmetoyer I am also reminded of the series finale of I'll Fly Away. Regina King told her daughter of a similar incident where a black boy from Detroit came down and did the same thing and the same consequences befell him. I'm sure that the Emmett Till incident was the Ripped From the Headlines idea for this storyline.
@removetube Horrible what happen to Channon Christian, but all 4 of them got arrested, what abotu Emmet Till killers? They were acquitted, plus this was a young 14 year old black kid being killed by two maybe more adults.
Thank you for the precious information. I believe it is a parental duty to inform the children who the martyrs are. I found that the younger generation often times are clueless about their origins: however, providing them with a little history could help them to form a better idea of what struggles of our ancestors were.
@clicker1967 Very true-- but I've also found that this story resonates with young people, because Emmett Till was their age; barely a teenager with his whole life ahead of him.
@removetube Oh shut up. The white men were adults that tortured Emmett Till. The black folks who allegedly killed the white couple were young dumb kids that are byproducts of racism and marginalism of the black community by your racist white establishment.
Thanks to all for your comments as you look at some of the history of our country. But let me make this clear, I will not tolerate hateful race-baiting on this page. It's one thing to talk about the evilness of the murderers; but it's another thing to project that hate to all white people. Hopefully Emmett Till's murder did help to bring us together-- because millions of Americans were appalled at what happened and worked to fight the hate in this country.
@rmetoyer-- CHANNEL UPDATE. A couple of annoying wanna be KKK sympathizers have now been banned from this page and their comments have been and will be deleted. If you get messages from them-- don't respond to them-- just report them to You Tube as I have. You Tube is a strong supporter of Free Speech-- unless you cross the line and enter into Hate Speech. Please think twice before you leave Hate Speech on You Tube and on my page specifically. You will be reported to You Tube.
Thanks for this video. It breaks my heart to know the story since my days as a great reader about america past since my days as a college student in Africa. These child killers would or will have to answer for this crime before the almighty. Peace
rip emmett hill i'm just now hearing of your story and it's sad that peaople can do such a thing i'm a strong black brother that hate this how can anybody do somthin like that its wrong i bid you farewell though
its a tragedy, Bryant is no longer alive, but in his years, he lived a harsh and yet quiet life...when he admitted it, the white people who once supported them shun them, in fact the defense attorney now regrets of having to defend him. The black community forced his store to be closed...he died blind...did he regret it? probably...as this is the event that ruined his life...and said "You mean do I wish I might wouldn’t have done it? I’m just sorry that it happened"
@jesusnavarret -- Actually I think they all regretted it. The two killers admitted later that they never intended to kill Emmett-- they just wanted to scare him. But he kept saying things like "I'm just as good as you", and the more he resisted, the madder they got until they killed him. From then on, they were just trying to protect themselves from jail, even though they thought they were within their rights to punish him. Carolyn Bryant pretty much backed the actions of her husband.
@rmetoyer Have you read the report on what they did to that poor boy? There's no way they didn't mean to kill him. The horrific things they did to him where meant to torture, mutilate and kill this kid in the worst possible way.
So getting mad justifies their behavior? So I'm guessing every time a black man guns down an old white man he has the right based on past treatment.
@rrtodd95-- You're asking me if I read the report? I'm the one who did the documentary, I know in great detail what the did to him so don't try to put words in my mouth! I never said what they did to him was justified. The murderers said later that they only intended to scare at first; but were angered by his answers. I do believe they all regretted it; but that doesn't justify what they did to him. Cold blooded murder is never justified under any circumstances, past, present or future.
@rmetoyer You're right. They intended to scare him. They beat him when he said, "You aren't going to kill me." And when he told them that he had been with a white woman before and he was as good as them. Is when they killed him. Milam said he was going to make an example out of Emmet.
@rmetoyer well as much as he resisted you just dont do that. By looking at the picture of his face and reading the story they put bob wire around him who thinks of stuff like that to do to someone but just cause the color of his skin and whistling at a girl and resisting you do all that shit to someone.. thats some messed up shit right there period!
@jesusnavarret-- For some reason you keep acting like you believe I think the murderers were justified in killing Emmett ? Just like you I am angry about his murder and I agree that they were racist scumbags, But I do believe that they later regretted killing him, based on interviews and research for this program that you haven't seen. We agree that what they did was terrible and they should have gone to jail. The story you're missing is how this murder made people stand up and fight back!
@rmetoyer They sure know how to scare: Poking out his eyes, beating him and shooting him in the head with a 45. Nice to know these two racist cunts died of cancer...they deserved no less
@DaMuttzNutz They suffered alright. But not enough if you ask me. I'm not religious. But in cases like this, I do hope there is a heaven and Hell. Because for Emmet to suffer such a death, I want him to find peace in the afterlife. Not just rot in the ground after dying horribly. And I want those two assholes to burn for all eternity.
@jesusnavarret Just my opinion, but I don't think they were ever sorry for their actions... they ran right to a magazine after their acquittal and gave their interview, gloating about every single thing they did to him. I bet they WERE sorry about gloating because of the public backlash and greater attention given to the case. But about the murder? I don't think their was a single ounce of guilt about that, ever.
@KennedyFan Ugh, I agree. How they described it in that article, was like Emmet deserved what he got. How they said Emmet ruined their life and that he should just stay dead. They don't feel one ounce of remorse over killing a young person. The only people I've read so far that's regretted it, is the people of that town. A lot of them, white AND black, didn't like Bryant & Milam. They knew it was an injustice.
@jesusnavarret , According to one the Deputy sheriff's son. Carolyn & Juanita knew they(the murdering scumbags) were capable of killing. So they didn't tell their husbands. I don't think they wanted this to ever happen. But unfortunately SOMEONE squealed and poor Emmet was killed. I don't think she had much of choice but to support him. She already had two children by the time of the trial and everyone sort of saw the "not guilty" coming. One of her sons said she wants nothing to do with it.
@removetube That was also a terrible tragedy and there never is an excuse or justification for murder. We could all type in names of murder victims of all races. But I hope you realize that Emmett Till was murdered as part of an orchestrated reign of terror-- to prevent African Americans from voting and claiming their constitutional rights. Here's another difference-- Emmett Till's murderers were well known but they got off on the charges or murder and kidnapping-- never spending a day in jail!
I just recently learned about the story of Emmett Till but his story always makes me cry...its so sad. I cant believe people were this cruel..it makes me so angry.
didnt he whistle cause he had a studdering problems so his mom told him to take a deep breath and it made a whistleling sound and they thought he whistled so they killed him
@PokemommFreakBoy1997-- That's what his mother Mamie believed because that's what she had taught him to do. No family members spoke about it until after she died in 2003. That's when his two cousins that were with him finally told the truth; that Emmett had in fact done the "Wolf Whistle" at the store. His two cousins are in the film you saw-- Wheeler Parker and Simeon Wright. They are grown men now, in their 60's, but they were there and witnessed the whole thing.
@HazeKnighte-- Actually-- most people don't say that at all. And no one who was actually there says he did anything but whistle. But either way, he didn't deserve to be tortured and murdered.
@rmetoyer Ya we heard that he said something like that from school tsk dam teachers. And ya he didnt deserve to die for what he did that just shows you how stupid people were back then
@HazeKnighte I don't know where the teacher got that from. It's a rumor that has never been confirmed.
This video has interviews with Emmett's two cousins who were in the store with him and they admit that he whistled at her. They were all scared to death because of the "Wolf Whistle", and that's why they ran away and hid. I believe those two men because they were eyewitnesses to the incident.
@A7Xblood *Round of applause* Listen mate your country was built on the belief of "Freedom of all men and equality to all" and yet you was a openly racist nation for over 300 years. Sure you ave a black president, but you also have the KKK
@A7Xblood No your own Supreme Court created laws allowing the the segregation of blacks and whites. And the KKK exists on the net, even worse, there voice can be heard across the globe.
@A7Xblood What so i have to live in your country to know your history? What logic is that? I studied your history from your very creation, utter disgrace!
@cod26 NO. I'm saying that you're not here to judge. And did your history books tell you about the civil war? Martin Luther King Jr? The Civil Rights Movement? The Little Rock Nine? I bet not. So shut up.... the only thing your 'history' book tells you is that there were about 20 states that had slaves and I bet they only tell you about Georgia and all the other worst ones. So once again, shut up.
@A7Xblood Hahahaaa they actually did, i know all about the Civil Rights movement, from its foundation under individuals like Frederick Douglace, to Rosa Parks, Emmet Till and ofcourse Martin Luthor King. So stop being an arrogant twat and viewing me as some dumbass.... i probably no a hell of alot more than you do! Your Supreme Court allowed the passing of so called 'Jim Crow' laws allowing segregation of the races. So fuck off, i bet you know nothing of my country, i certainly know yours.
@cod26 I know about all of those things and I'm in the eighth grade! And the supreme court allowed those only because of the votes, but shortly ended them afterwards. And what country do you live in? The U.K.?
@A7Xblood Yeah how old is that? Because of the votes - otherwise meaning more people VOTED FOR it then against it, which means they agreed with SEGREGATION. And it didn't end shortly afterwards - the case in which SEGREGATION was allowed was Plessy V Ferguson (1896) & ended with another case in 1957 HOW IS THAT as you put it "Shortly ended afterwards". On top of that Lynchings, over 30,000 occured across the states and yet no one was brought to justice for it.
@cod26 The supreme court didn't vote, the people took it to them and they had a vote of the people. The supreme court had a vote to end it and only one was against it... so there. Forget it... okay?
@A7Xblood How does that justify years of racism? "We put it to a vote, it outcome was wrong, immoral & racist, it also went against one of our own amendments, but we decided to allow it anyway" somehow i don't think that justifies it.
@A7Xblood lol i call bull if u look at ur countries history ul notice that abrahim lincoln was a white supremacist heck just recently with the war in afgan whihc was in no way justifed ur country has been fucked for ages and still is
This kind of racial racism pisses me off. As a white male I'm always looked down upon as the racist always. Thats just how white people are looked as. I have never been racist in my life, watching this in school I cried this was very depressing and saddening to see that because of race/ethnic group he was beaten alive.
Wikipedia says he did a lot more than whistle. Not that it matters because nothing justified his murder. Still this video does ignore what supposedly went on in the store.
@zachsocool16-- Keep in mind that Wikipedia isn't always 100 % factual. The posting I read indicated that he allegedly flirted with a white woman-- and spoke to her. I'm not sure where they got that from. The two eyewitness accounts in my film are from his cousins who were there in the store. Both admitted that Emmett did a wolf whistle and they were surprised when he did it; that it came out of nowhere. I believe them, that nothing else happened. Wikipedia quotes no one and is wrong!
@rmetoyer Well thats not true Wikipedia quotes lots of people like the woman in the store and the people that killed him... Maybe not the best sources but because they couldn't be tried again so they admitted to it later and described everything in detail. It seems possible they were boasting but they didnt have a reason to lie. Anyway it's a great video.
@zachsocool16 Wikipedia doesn't quote anyone-- as it discusses other rumors of what happened in the store. It says Carolyn Bryant asserted he grabbed her around the waist. But they didn't talk to her and I have never seen a quote from her saying, "That boy grabbed me around the waist". That's a quotation. The interviews in my story were with eyewitnesses who said Emmett whistled at her. You hear them say it.
Wikipedia is not always a good source for historical information.
@daberko120ch --- Well now you're showing me that you don't know anything about doing research. I'm well aware of links; you looked at a link to view my documentary on You Tube! All I'm saying is that Wikipedia is not always a solid source of information. You will find historical data on there that is disputed, or was interpreted differently by the writer on Wikipedia. As for quotes, they were no links to quotes from Carolyn Bryant about the Emmett Till case. That is what we were discussing.
@rmetoyer i know how to preform a bibliography... but you want to know why you have to put so much information in them??? LAZINESS!! all you need is the name and where you got it, nothing else no 'year', no 'when it was published' none of that crap! its pure laziness.
@zachsocool16 (in words of The Rock) IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIItttttttttttttttttttttttt dddddddddddddddddddddoooooooooooeeeeesnt matter if they left that out, wut matters is that they killed that boy and bruttally beat him R.I.P Emmet
@zachsocool16 In your mind, as an adult, you can say his actions led to deadly consequences. But as you said... he was a "KID"! He wasn't asking for anything; he was just acting out! The fact remains that he was murdered for something as innocent as whistling at a white woman... and the men who murdered him felt justified in taking his life. They might have killed him for just looking at her, or for not getting off the sidewalk as white people approached him, or for not knowing " his place"!
@e35554r I'm actually Native, dam i love it when people assume I'm white over the internet probably because I'm educated but in real life you wouldn't call me white.
@zachsocool16 BETTER, now u just made ur self LOOK SUPER DUMB. nobody asked 2 b killed like tht. wat happen 2 just shooting PPL, i can only imagine the type of SCARY LIFESTLE u live.
@PotatoesAreEpic: Young lady, just by the fact that you are even VIEWING this horrible and disturbing time in our nation's history, tells me that you are one of the few that seek to change this country's idea about a person's complexion having nothing to do with what they are inside but to answer your question about the 'alleged wolf whistle,' Black men during that time were lynched for even less than that. There was 'wreckless eyeballing' where a black man couldn't look at a white woman.
This was a horrible time in American history and the brutality and repression was exposed by this murder through the actions of Emmett Till's mother. As the producer director of this documentary, I keep reminding people that thousands of Americans, Black and White, were appalled at the murder and got involved in the Civil Rights Movement. Emmett Till was a martyr for the movement and Americans of all races fought for change. We cannot blame all white people for what happened to Emmett Till.
Well, I'm a 15 year old white girl from Wisconsin. In school, we had to learn about Emmett Till. I saw the photo of the body and was instantly disturbed. Seriously, why is it needed to kill a little boy over a wolf whistle? And that brutally?
@jasongotti1992 Hi,..I agree,iv'e seen pll of my color do the most awefull things, done even TO ME,same with pll of of color,iv'e been messed up and seen others being messed up as well. But we all failed in the biggest test of all, which should unite us anyways,in that the test was God placed an "adam and Eve" on every corner of the earth,we all failed it.The biggest struggle seems yet to come, and WILL unite us all, fight against evil.
I just want to cry...I am so so so unbelievably saddened by this. I don't believe in heaven or hell, so I hope these men were confined at least to a hellish mental state although they got to live out their lives long and healthy and prosperous.
@purp1emarker I know his mother carried tremendous guilt for letting go to Mississippi. Racism is still very strong there...So imagine how awful it was in those days. Imagine the hate and inhumanity it took to do something so atrocious...because he whistled at a woman
@blkazn77 yea. I did an essay on Emmitt Till. Thats why i looked this up. You said that racism is still strong there. Racism is everywhere just not as strong in certain places. I have had racist experiences and they really put you down.
I understand alot has change and the world is way more united then it was back then but when i watch the video read on how they kill him and seen his corpse it piss me off i get mad like that shit was wrong why for a whistling got damn was it really that serious the just kill this man they beat him and took out one of his eyes and shoot him in the face how do you accept that ...... i guess idk
@Yuffie3982 I guess the only thing I disagree with is what you said is that "the kid was not completely innocent". I submit that in fact he was innocent of being a very young teenager, who had no idea of what he was doing and where he was doing it. Whistling at a woman was not a crime and his death sentence imposed by the police or a court of law. These were people who took the law into their own hands and made it up as they went along, ruling by terror and intimidation, to keep blacks in line.
@Yuffie3982 -- What you were taught about the whistling incident came from his mother Mamie, who was trying to protect the memory of her son. However remember that she was not there and Emmett was a young teenager. His two cousins I interviewed, were with him at the store. They saw and heard the whole incident and said the whistle was on purpose; that he was trying to impress them. But either way, why would your murder and torture a young boy for whistling at a woman? It was a terrible crime!
@Nopartyforme82 - YOu are really ignorant and to think that you found this funny shows how not only ignorant you are, but how evil you are as well. It is apparent that you've never had anyone "close" to you killed, but as you go on with your life, you will and you won't find that so funny. I'm gonna pray for you.
Racism is really a creation of dislike by those who feels superior to other people, groups etc. What we fail to realize is that People are so angry these days, especially these days, you can just read some of the angry, hateful comments on this site and see that the simple things that people can resolve without fighting or arguing, they want to fight and kill each other over. It takes one person to spark that, such as the person who typed "lmao, that nigger got FUCKED up.."
@broke2471 I agree. Whites hating blacks. South Koreans hating North Koreans. Even if everyone was the same color, there would still be hate. Rich hating the poor. Religious hating atheists. Republicans hating Democrats. Vegetarians hating meat eaters.
(Sigh) Only if N.W.A lived back in these times, cause if they did the white people back then would be scared shitless of the worlds most dangerous group! Haha just think about it, the white people would be slaves and blacks would be whooping they're asses night and day!
I appreciate your feedback and that's the point I think people need to understand. We all hate what happened to Emmett Till. But we can't hate everyone who looks like the killers today! Plus, Emmett's murder did help to jump start the Civil Rights movement in the late 50's and many white Americans joined us in the streets in protest of segregation.
@rmetoyer weird how fucked up horrible shit somehow does good like the civil rights movement, seriously anyone with mississippi ancestors should be ashamed to be related to them you racist fucks.
@mrpapafunky7879 how far have we come exactly? do we genuinely have equal rights? have black men stopped being killed, locked away and ostracised? no. i think we have not come very far at all. Racism is less overt but it has by no means disappeared. and just because someone knows how to play down their true emotions does not mean that there is genuine remorse or regret.
@phylliewilly as far as racism compleley dissapearing,th will NEVER happen NEVER.BUT we a5re not being hung by trees i have slept with many white girls with no drama, its still is bad but as far as the in your face racism inequality we have come along.it will never be perfect lets build on the positive rather than making excuse that
I know white men are insecure around black men, but black boys? A grown man was threatened by a kid's sexual prowess? White men don't hate black men, they're jealous of them.
man this is nuts and this guys is bryant guys is lucky coz with the black youth of today if they dicided to get him no one wuld ever knwo who did with a case like this aint nobody gona snitch but i do hope that nuthin ha[pens to hi or his wifes new fam coz that wuld jsut be deep

Well lets just say you minus well jump off the empirestate peace.....
jago397 2 months ago
@jago397-- Emmett Till did not touch her, he only whistled at her. He was killed for whistling at her-- nothing else. His cousins, who are alive today, testified that there was only a "wolf-whistle", and they are interviewed in the documentary. Yes what he did was dumb, considering where he was. But that didn't even come close to justifying they way they kidnapped him, tortured him, lynched him and shot him. Yes he made a mistake, but the guilt for his murder rests with the killers, not Emmett!
rmetoyer 2 months ago 3
@rmetoyer Emmett Till came from Chicago, a city where segregation was not as big as it was in Mississippi. Also his Mother has said that Emmett whistles to alleviate his stuttering, so he may not have been flirting anyway.
Desttinyy 1 month ago
@Desttinyy-- Yes it's true that Emmett had no idea that he was angering racists when he whistled at Carolyn Bryant. His mother didn't want to believe that he had whistled at the woman-- that he'd done it to correct his stuttering problem. But his two cousins who were there with him say he did whistle at Bryant-- and that he was showing off. Emmett also begged his cousins not to tell their Uncle what he had done. He made a mistake, but we all agree that it was no reason to murder him!
rmetoyer 1 month ago
@rmetoyer
People whistle at each other all the time. He made no mistake. Only mistake he made was being in a shit hole like Mississippi. The kid did nothing wrong.
cinemafreak666 1 month ago
@cinemafreak666-- you're preaching to the choir-- and I agree with you 1000 per cent. Whistling was not a mistake-- but where he did it was-- especially since he had been warned that Mississippi was a very dangerous place for blacks-- and warned that he had to be careful. The other mistake he and his cousins made was not telling their uncle Mose about the incident-- because he wound have sent Emmett back home to Chicago if he had known. But no-- Emmett did nothing wrong!!
rmetoyer 1 month ago
@rmetoyer Sorry, but what Emmett Till did WAS NOT dumb. How in the world could you even say something like that??? What those racist bigots did was dumb. Who in the world beats a 14-year-old child to death, beyond recognition, then shoots him, weighs his body down and dumps it in a river?? Emmett Till did NOTHING wrong.
Miss407 2 weeks ago
@Miss407-- Whistling at a white woman in Mississippi in 1955 was a DUMB thing for a black teenager to do, especially since Emmett was warned before he left Chicago. We AGREE he did NOTHING wrong, but he forgot where he was. He was murdered by racists who would have killed him for not getting off of the sidewalk to let them pass and they thought they had the right to kill him! That was the evil of Mississippi and Emmett's murder exposed that hatred for the whole world to see.
rmetoyer 2 weeks ago
@Miss407 we can say two things here he was wring as in he didnt know the ways of the south but that does not excuse a racial muder its coom sense taht u dont kill children if anyone at all but we do live ina world where engand and america can wage war of other countries by claimin they have wmds while those of us at home know better but dont do shit about it btw the second scenario was not a compariosn to emmets im jsu pointin on hwo screwed up the world is
vegito1325 1 day ago
@rmetoyer It was't dumb. He was an innocent boy from the north, he didn't know the ways of the south.
ilinaeternity 2 weeks ago
@ilinaeternity-- look we can argue forever about whether or not it was a dumb thing to do. I say it was dumb because he was warned-- and because I raised two kids who did dumb things all the time-- when they became teenagers. Kids do dumb things-- like showing off to each other. But we agree on everything else entirely-- he was innocent of doing anything wrong! He didn't understand or believe that he could be killed for that whistle. The real villains were his hateful killers!!
rmetoyer 1 week ago
@rmetoyer I mean he didn't know the ways of the south. You can't call someone dumb if they aren't even aware of the circumstances (and they aren't unaware deliberately). But we're on the same page. It was a terrible, horrific thing:(.
ilinaeternity 1 week ago
@jago397 "...You minus well..."?
Monkeyman2357 3 weeks ago
@LegoMasterPibi-- Well that's one way of looking at it; but I think you're missing the point. He was murdered for simply whistling at the woman, which is not even a crime. What you're saying is like this-- "If JFK hadn't gone to Dallas in 1963-- he wouldn't have been assassinated"! But JFK did go there, and the people who murdered him are still guilty. Emmett Till was visiting his uncle, not his father. You're right If his uncle had known what had happened he would have sent him back to Chicago.
rmetoyer 2 months ago
@rmetoyer Hell know what you just compared is completely stupid no offense. Jfk had no idea would happen. This kid had no commen sense. Everyone in those days knew it was not a smart idea to talk to white women. He did. He was cocky and thought he was above the unspoken law of the south back then. Its wrong but thats just the way it was. Littel kid was so brash he talked and kept talking till they beat the shit out of him. Then they killed him out of rage. Sorry about this kids death but hey....
jago397 2 months ago
@jago397-- With all due respect-- it sounds like you are blaming Emmett for his own death and that is backwards. He was just a kid and he didn't understand the consequences of his actions. Nothing he did removes the guilt from his murderers. They KILLED him, and THEY are guilty. You say JFK didn't know he would be killed; but do you think Emmett would have whistled if he really thought he'd be killed for it? Wake up and put blame WITH THE KILLERS and a racist system, not the victim!
rmetoyer 2 months ago
@rmetoyer No im sorry me at 12 knew not to go to certain areas because of racism. THIS WAS 2004! Hell i would of known at 14 that this shit was not acceptable in 59. When in rome do as the romans do. I know its completely wrong. I would be more angry and feel sorry for the guys that were accused of shit like this but still got killed. This kid was no martyr for our people! He was a idiot in a fucked up situation. Im not trolling thats just how i feel. He was warned and he still disobeyed sad.
jago397 2 months ago
@jago397-- Yes kids do dumb things everyday even now. But the killers had no right to kill him. If they hadn't murdered Emmett -- they would have killed another black boy for no reason. Emmett wasn't the first young black man who was killed for nothing. The racists didn't like him because he was a Northerner and they thought he was "uppity"! They were also mad at other Northern blacks for registering blacks to vote. The Emmett Till case helped to bring all those other murders to light.

What amazes me is the people in the video acting as if Emmett did something wrong by whistling. Emmett owed no one an apology for whistling at a white woman. How insecure do you have to be to kill a 13 year old for whistling and your woman?
loupremo 4 months ago 4
@loupremo-- I would disagree with you that anyone in this video is suggesting that Emmett was wrong for whistling at a white woman. His two cousins who were there and his mother who warned him were trying to tell him that he headed to a dangerous place. Blacks were expected to lower their heads and get off of sidewalks when white people approached them. That's the way the South was then and they were trying to warn Emmett how to survive. No-- Emmett did nothing wrong-- but he was still murdered!
rmetoyer 4 months ago
@rmetoyer totally agree!
fabulous4eva1 3 months ago
How can anyone even TRY to justify His killing? The hearts of white people (many, but not all) pumped nothing but hatred through their veins back then. Presently, it has been replaced with cold indifference. Emmet was just one of many blacks to suffer from the almost primitive mind-set of racist white sub-humans. I pray that an after life exists where white supemacists are made to FEEL the horrors that they have inflicted upon others simply because they had more melanin in their skin.

I suppose the formula of 9th grade education + IQ around 70 + racial hatred ingrained in him since the day he was born = the death of Emmett Till.
howboutyomama 5 months ago

Has there EVER been a detailed account of what went on in the barn?
howboutyomama 5 months ago
@howboutyomama I haven't really seen a detailed report of what happened to Emmett in that barn. You can assume that he was badly beaten and shot, then thrown in the river, attached to a huge factory fan. Most of his injuries were probably from the beating. But also remember that he was underwater for a time-- and there's no telling what happened to his body in the river-- including being attacked by fish. There was no autopsy by the sheriff, nor did they try to preserve his body for burial.
rmetoyer 5 months ago
@rmetoyer The killers gave an interview to a Magazine and they detailed how they killed the boy after they were found NOT guilty of Killing him. The so called Double Jeopardy clause was in effect to protect the criminal from being charged twice with the same crime. That is what I call Criminal Justice in America, because the Criminal has always gotten Justice in the court systems.
sesostres 4 months ago

If you were black back then, you didn't do that, especially in the South.
mkl62 6 months ago
@mkl62 -- That is not a racist comment-- and trust me Emmett was warned about what he had to do to survive in that society. But he was a kid and he was showing off for his cousins. He didn't know what he was doing and what the consequences might be. He was just playing around-- but his cousins knew.
The issue is this-- was his whistling at Carolyn Bryant justification for his murder? The answer is NO-- and that's why millions of Americans were appalled and stood up against this kind of hatred.
rmetoyer 6 months ago
@rmetoyer I am also reminded of the series finale of I'll Fly Away. Thank you for the precious information. I believe it is a parental duty to inform the children who the martyrs are. I found that the younger generation often times are clueless about their origins: however, providing them with a little history could help them to form a better idea of what struggles of our ancestors were.
clicker1967 6 months ago
@clicker1967 Very true-- but I've also found that this story resonates with young people, because Emmett Till was their age; barely a teenager with his whole life ahead of him.

@removetube Oh shut up. The white men were adults that tortured Emmett Till. The black folks who allegedly killed the white couple were young dumb kids that are byproducts of racism and marginalism of the black community by your racist white establishment.

its a tragedy, Bryant is no longer alive, but in his years, he lived a harsh and yet quiet life...when he admitted it, the white people who once supported them shun them, in fact the defense attorney now regrets of having to defend him. The black community forced his store to be closed...he died blind...did he regret it? probably...as this is the event that ruined his life...and said "You mean do I wish I might wouldn’t have done it? I’m just sorry that it happened"
TheShinema 8 months ago
I doubt this guys regret what they did.....anybody know what was Carolyn Bryant reaction to this did she even give a fuck
jesusnavarret 8 months ago
@jesusnavarret -- Actually I think they all regretted it. The two killers admitted later that they never intended to kill Emmett-- they just wanted to scare him. But he kept saying things like "I'm just as good as you", and the more he resisted, the madder they got until they killed him. From then on, they were just trying to protect themselves from jail, even though they thought they were within their rights to punish him. Carolyn Bryant pretty much backed the actions of her husband.
rmetoyer 8 months ago
@rmetoyer Have you read the report on what they did to that poor boy? There's no way they didn't mean to kill him. The horrific things they did to him where meant to torture, mutilate and kill this kid in the worst possible way.
So getting mad justifies their behavior? So I'm guessing every time a black man guns down an old white man he has the right based on past treatment.
rrtodd95 7 months ago 8
@rrtodd95-- You're asking me if I read the report? I'm the one who did the documentary, I know in great detail what the did to him so don't try to put words in my mouth! I never said what they did to him was justified. The murderers said later that they only intended to scare at first; but were angered by his answers. I do believe they all regretted it; but that doesn't justify what they did to him. Cold blooded murder is never justified under any circumstances, past, present or future.
rmetoyer 7 months ago
@rmetoyer You're right. They intended to scare him. They beat him when he said, "You aren't going to kill me." And when he told them that he had been with a white woman before and he was as good as them. Is when they killed him. Milam said he was going to make an example out of Emmet.

@jesusnavarret-- For some reason you keep acting like you believe I think the murderers were justified in killing Emmett ? We agree that what they did was terrible and they should have gone to jail. The story you're missing is how this murder made people stand up and fight back!

@DaMuttzNutz They suffered alright. But not enough if you ask me. I'm not religious. But in cases like this, I do hope there is a heaven and Hell. sumoni 7 months ago
KennedyFan 7 months ago
@KennedyFan Ugh, I agree. How they described it in that article, was like Emmet deserved what he got. How they said Emmet ruined their life and that he should just stay dead. They don't feel one ounce of remorse over killing a young person. The only people I've read so far that's regretted it, is the people of that town. A lot of them, white AND black, didn't like Bryant & Milam. They knew it was an injustice.

HazeKnighte 10 months ago
@HazeKnighte I don't know where the teacher got that from. It's a rumor that has never been confirmed.
This video has interviews with Emmett's two cousins who were in the store with him and they admit that he whistled at her. They were all scared to death because of the "Wolf Whistle", and that's why they ran away and hid. I believe those two men because they were eyewitnesses to the incident.

The USA is a fucking disgrace
cod26 11 months ago
@cod26 Hey listen here, this happened 56 years ago, and we were a disgrace then, but we have a black president so shut up.
A7Xblood 10 months ago
@A7Xblood *Round of applause* Listen mate your country was built on the belief of "Freedom of all men and equality to all" and yet you was a openly racist nation for over 300 years. Sure you ave a black president, but you also have the KKK
cod26 10 months ago
@cod26 First, it was only openly racist in the south and second, we may still have the KKK but they aren't even active anymore, they're just a club.
A7Xblood 10 months ago
@A7Xblood No your own Supreme Court created laws allowing the the segregation of blacks and whites. And the KKK exists on the net, even worse, there voice can be heard across the globe.
cod26 10 months ago
@cod26 I'm not going to get into this with someone that doesn't even live in the U.S.
A7Xblood 10 months ago
@A7Xblood What so i have to live in your country to know your history? What logic is that? I studied your history from your very creation, utter disgrace!
cod26 10 months ago
A7Xblood 10 months ago
@A7Xblood Hahahaaa they actually did, i know all about the Civil Rights movement, from its foundation under individuals like Frederick Douglace, to Rosa Parks, Emmet Till and ofcourse Martin Luthor King. So stop being an arrogant twat and viewing me as some dumbass.... i probably no a hell of alot more than you do! Your Supreme Court allowed the passing of so called 'Jim Crow' laws allowing segregation of the races. So fuck off, i bet you know nothing of my country, i certainly know yours.
cod26 10 months ago
@cod26 I know about all of those things and I'm in the eighth grade! And the supreme court allowed those only because of the votes, but shortly ended them afterwards. And what country do you live in? The U.K.?
A7Xblood 10 months ago
@A7Xblood Yeah how old is that? Because of the votes - otherwise meaning more people VOTED FOR it then against it, which means they agreed with SEGREGATION. And it didn't end shortly afterwards - the case in which SEGREGATION was allowed was Plessy V Ferguson (1896) & ended with another case in 1957 HOW IS THAT as you put it "Shortly ended afterwards". On top of that Lynchings, over 30,000 occured across the states and yet no one was brought to justice for it.
cod26 10 months ago
@cod26 The supreme court didn't vote, the people took it to them and they had a vote of the people. The supreme court had a vote to end it and only one was against it... so there. Forget it... okay?
A7Xblood 10 months ago
@A7Xblood How does that justify years of racism? "We put it to a vote, it outcome was wrong, immoral & racist, it also went against one of our own amendments, but we decided to allow it anyway" somehow i don't think that justifies it.
cod26 10 months ago

even if it was someone that killed my family
I could never do that to them.. I wouldn't even support it.
who the hell would push for a future like this?

This kind of racial racism pisses me off. As a white male I'm always looked down upon as the racist always. Thats just how white people are looked as. I have never been racist in my life, watching this in school I cried this was very depressing and saddening to see that because of race/ethnic group he was beaten alive.
live4death2222 11 months ago
Wikipedia says he did a lot more than whistle. Not that it matters because nothing justified his murder. Still this video does ignore what supposedly went on in the store.
zachsocool16 11 months ago
@zachsocool16-- Keep in mind that Wikipedia isn't always 100 % factual. The posting I read indicated that he allegedly flirted with a white woman-- and spoke to her. I'm not sure where they got that from. The two eyewitness accounts in my film are from his cousins who were there in the store. Both admitted that Emmett did a wolf whistle and they were surprised when he did it; that it came out of nowhere. I believe them, that nothing else happened. Wikipedia quotes no one and is wrong!
rmetoyer 11 months ago
@rmetoyer Well thats not true Wikipedia quotes lots of people like the woman in the store and the people that killed him... Maybe not the best sources but because they couldn't be tried again so they admitted to it later and described everything in detail. It seems possible they were boasting but they didnt have a reason to lie. Anyway it's a great video.
zachsocool16 11 months ago
@zachsocool16 Wikipedia doesn't quote anyone-- as it discusses other rumors of what happened in the store. It says Carolyn Bryant asserted he grabbed her around the waist. But they didn't talk to her and I have never seen a quote from her saying, "That boy grabbed me around the waist". That's a quotation. The interviews in my story were with eyewitnesses who said Emmett whistled at her. You hear them say it.
Wikipedia is not always a good source for historical information.
rmetoyer 11 months ago
@rmetoyer websites don't need quotes if they have links :] thats the thing about technology... wikipedia is technology with the links...
daberko120ch 11 months ago
@daberko120ch --- Well now you're showing me that you don't know anything about doing research. I'm well aware of links; you looked at a link to view my documentary on You Tube! All I'm saying is that Wikipedia is not always a solid source of information. You will find historical data on there that is disputed, or was interpreted differently by the writer on Wikipedia. As for quotes, they were no links to quotes from Carolyn Bryant about the Emmett Till case. That is what we were discussing.
rmetoyer 11 months ago
@rmetoyer i know how to preform a bibliography... but you want to know why you have to put so much information in them??? LAZINESS!! all you need is the name and where you got it, nothing else no 'year', no 'when it was published' none of that crap! its pure laziness.
daberko120ch 11 months ago
@zachsocool16 (in words of The Rock) IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIItttttttttttttttttttttttt dddddddddddddddddddddoooooooooooeeeeesnt matter if they left that out, wut matters is that they killed that boy and bruttally beat him R.I.P Emmet

Kid was asking for it. Doesn't mean he deserved it. Doesn't mean his death wasn't tragic, horrible. But that kid was asking for it.
zachsocool16 11 months ago
@zachsocool16 In your mind, as an adult, you can say his actions led to deadly consequences. But as you said... he was a "KID"! He wasn't asking for anything; he was just acting out! The fact remains that he was murdered for something as innocent as whistling at a white woman... and the men who murdered him felt justified in taking his life. They might have killed him for just looking at her, or for not getting off the sidewalk as white people approached him, or for not knowing " his place"!

We cannot blame all white people for what happened to Emmett Till.
rmetoyer 11 months ago
Well, I'm a 15 year old white girl from Wisconsin. In school, we had to learn about Emmett Till. I saw the photo of the body and was instantly disturbed. Seriously, why is it needed to kill a little boy over a wolf whistle? And that brutally?

@purp1emarker I know his mother carried tremendous guilt for letting go to Mississippi. Racism is still very strong there...So imagine how awful it was in those days. Imagine the hate and inhumanity it took to do something so atrocious...because he whistled at a woman
blkazn77 1 year ago
@blkazn77 yea. I did an essay on Emmitt Till. Thats why i looked this up. You said that racism is still strong there. Racism is everywhere just not as strong in certain places. I have had racist experiences and they really put you down.

These were people who took the law into their own hands and made it up as they went along, ruling by terror and intimidation, to keep blacks in line.
rmetoyer 1 year ago
@Yuffie3982 -- What you were taught about the whistling incident came from his mother Mamie, who was trying to protect the memory of her son. However remember that she was not there and Emmett was a young teenager. His two cousins I interviewed, were with him at the store. They saw and heard the whole incident and said the whistle was on purpose; that he was trying to impress them. But either way, why would your murder and torture a young boy for whistling at a woman? It was a terrible crime!

It takes one person to spark that, such as the person who typed "lmao, that nigger got FUCKED up.."
broke2471 1 year ago
@broke2471 I agree. Whites hating blacks. South Koreans hating North Koreans. Even if everyone was the same color, there would still be hate. Rich hating the poor. Religious hating atheists. Republicans hating Democrats. Vegetarians hating meat eaters.

@mrpapafunky7879
I appreciate your feedback and that's the point I think people need to understand. We all hate what happened to Emmett Till. But we can't hate everyone who looks like the killers today! Plus, Emmett's murder did help to jump start the Civil Rights movement in the late 50's and many white Americans joined us in the streets in protest of segregation.
rmetoyer 1 year ago 10
@rmetoyer weird how fucked up horrible shit somehow does good like the civil rights movement, seriously anyone with mississippi ancestors should be ashamed to be related to them you racist fucks.
nflizsoft6 11 months ago
@mrpapafunky7879 how far have we come exactly? do we genuinely have equal rights? have black men stopped being killed, locked away and ostracised? no. i think we have not come very far at all. Racism is less overt but it has by no means disappeared. and just because someone knows how to play down their true emotions does not mean that there is genuine remorse or regret.
phylliewilly 1 year ago
@phylliewilly as far as racism compleley dissapearing,th will NEVER happen NEVER.BUT we a5re not being hung by trees i have slept with many white girls with no drama, its still is bad but as far as the in your face racism inequality we have come along.it will never be perfect lets build on the positive rather than making excuse that
