@doctorgarcia12 the nib is a pen, yes...though not sure which it originally came with, since I had two sonics - one the was 'UV', and one that was just blue that came with the sonic-pen (set).
yeah, the character options sonic has light and sound and can sorta be used as a low level flashlight - nothing to walk around in dark woods with however, heh.
Thing is, tearing it apart to modify even, tears some bits apart, and weakens others - someday I'll have enough to build a proper one, heh - I hope.
does it make the noise (and by it i mean the screwdriver not the TARDIS) and is the light bright enough to be a flashlight? hope you answer soon! thanks!
does the sonic screwdriver make the noise or was it a recording? i really want to get it but i have no idea if i should get the flash light or the one you have. im guessing this one is way cooler?
@nickstan006 works fine for starting a computer - just add a transistor output. As for doors, I would need an electric lock or setup for such - and frankly, even though I'm still working on this project (desigining and sourcing parts, as I am able and can find time) - a door latch is the least of my projects right now, heh.
You used a photo sensor in the circuit board and when it picked up the light from the sonic screwdriver it activated. Makes and illusion that the sonic screw driver actually works
@Meandthetardis heh, its a bit more complicated than that...its a pair of microcontrollers - one a transmitter with an infrared LED, and the other has an infrared detector module...and then there is some sort of carrier wave and coded pulse that occurs between the two. there are links around to the company I got them from, though I'm working on my own microcontrollers now to be capable of a lot more (heh, its taking a lot of time and study...and trial and mostly error...)
...if it were just a light and a photo sensor, then consider that the room's light is so bright anyway, it would have flooded the sensor...so rather the detector module filters out visible light, and at the same time requires a carrier wave signal, sort of like a radio wave. also, the reason I chose infrared to mimic the things a sonic could do (if adding proper receivers also), is that it has a very narrow forward 'beam'.
...if it were actual sound or radio control, then it would be affected by pointing in any direction, or even thru walls, etc, which would not seem reasonable based on the onscreen functionability or such...
most ideas as such, done in a short moment of "i wonder if...", could likely use quite a bit of refinement... but...it would be 'stupid' rather, not to have tried in a sense, hehe...
now now boys...been a bit busy, but find that now i may need to edit some of the comments below i think...odd that this will be the first time doing so - so i gotta find the right controls i guess...

Well, it depends where you get it from I guess. It was advertised as £250 before in Doctor Who Magazine, but now it seems to have dropped to £225. There are some at around £210-£220 on eBay too. Prices seem to have dropped, I wouldn't be surprised if you could find one for around £200 now. Very jealous of you lol, I'd love to be able to afford one of them! :) Good Luck.

Haha well I'll be honest, I'm better with computers than anything you're putting together in these videos^^ But instead of buying an IR remote, if I had an extra clicker laying around could I take that apart and use those parts? That way I'd know it's already programmed for the lock. I mean, does the clicker really need that whole thing inside of it just to unlock the door? I realize this may be difficult to respond to over the comments, but thank you for trying =)
well, if you mean one of the keychain or key unlock things people have for their cars, then yeah...you could likely somehow take them apart and find a way to reassemble them into a sonic body...
Hi there, I'm trying to turn my sonic screwdriver into an Oyster card surrogate but I can't seem to get the LED head to split apart because it looks as if it's moulded tight - how did you get it to break and was it involved?
hehe sorry...been very busy lately...though, what's an oyster card? and as for splitting the head, i used a very thin exacto knife to very carefully run along the seams on either side....until i could pull them apart by hand...
You should make a version of the Master's laser screwdriver that can light matches from across a room. You can make a laser pointer out of the diode on a DVD burner that can do that, though I forget where I saw the vid.
this may sound reli stupid and u may fink im crazy but i fink i kno how to make a real sonic screwdriver only to open locks and doors and that none of the fancy stuff
which sonic is it? some it's been noticed, have been damaged in manufacture it seems. something about such as when I opened mine to play around, one of the wires to the light or speaker was pinched and basically cut in half between the two part halves...
It's the little plastic one. Like the one in your video. It didn't even give off light, but i soldered the wire back to the button. But still, no sound. I guess I'll have to look more closely.
do you have the LED torch? or the sonic screwdriver pen. the torch doesn't give off sound at all and there have been manufacturing problems, rare stock don't function properly.
ah good point keenan - I have the smaller one also which is just the flashlight, but I was referring to the difference I had with the UV version and the Blue+sonic pen double-pack version...btw, I finished up a more permanent version of my r/c sonic in another vid I made recently...though, I am sure people could take the sonic chip out of an old sonic or the pen. as well as the r/c chip and LED and put them into the smaller flashlight version...
um...yeah...I've referenced why i use it already - as an activation-"report" thingy, much more interesting for me at least than a simple light. hence, instead of an LED that blinks on/off, I wired into my tardis usb switch, so it would be more like the show in a "pretend" sense, and allow my sonic screwdriver to "activate" my tardis. or were you referring to some other aspect of such perhaps? :)
advance on it? sorry if i'm a bit tired to better understand what you mean...though, I did make a couple newer vids with some cool new lighting effects. though, if you are referring to more advanced microprocessor signalling and programming to stick in the sonic, that's where my skills end unfortunately, hehe.
aw, c'mon, how can you dismiss it when you haven't even tried it? let alone, studied or understand the electronics involved... :) and there's no way to please everyone, I learned that long ago, hehe. I'm more surprised nobody else yet seems to have at least put the basic circuit together to try, let alone tried putting it into a sonic. I'm hoping some other fans are on the ball, and show their results sometime relatively soon.
well, i wish I could have known of time lapse whathaveyou for making an as-I-work vid as such. though, back when i made it, i was just in the mood to work til finished...[all day, if not several, hehe...I forget]. which components are you referring to though? there's really nothing much to it. tiny-IR2 chipset, matching IR LED's/rcvr, few resistors, some wire, etc. I keep making notes of neat things I could put into a sonic still, but 1) lacking extra money,
and 2) wanting a better than plastic sonic to work with. if I had one that all the parts/pieces came apart better, it would be easier to access and design in such spaces/areas. but only having the top to jam everything down into, makes it very difficult to design where switches especially could be practically placed. and likely I wouldn't be able to use the extension part of the sonic. though without the extension, such frees up a lot of space for microcircuits. [I'm sleepy now, hehe]
oh...there are no on/off switches for the transmitter. It has a sleep mode when the button is not pressed, which only uses 1 millionth of an amp, so basically doesn't suck the battery for a looong time if not used regularly.
though, I think maybe fans ought to start making their own versions anyhow. there was supposed to be some mfx version made of metal or such (which i don't think they have on the market yet), whereas these toy versions are very much limited to any modifications, mostly because being plastic - its just a sort of mess to work with and otherwise. I saw on flickr some guys that had made their own version, with some elements of such being very interesting.
i have got one it is fantastic the only thing is it has a ring to put your finger round and that can get annoying if you want to use it quickly. But changing from red to Blue is AMAZING!! it also has this pannel under the cover and its also amazing. well worth the money!! if your planning on getting one BUY IT QUICKLY too many people want one!! The batteries are extramly easy to get too a lot easier than the old screwdriver!! GOOD LUCK WITH GETTING ONE!!!
i wish doctor who toy makers will employ you- so many of their toys could be so much improved with your ideas... dr who toys are often relatively limited in what they actually do - and are often relatively expensive considering the limits of each toy.... to have bonus additions like your ideas would be magical for any kid or adult-
cheers for the full info on converting it too- and will have a think bout any over conversions to dr whos toys that'd be good too and hope others do too.........
which tip piece? the whole emitter top as it were, or the blue part? hehe cause I still can't get the blue part off, glued on very well...if the whole emitter, then you just need to VERY CAREFULLY use an exacto knife along the side-seam edges...then perhaps stick something like a popsicle stick thru the middle to use to help pry things apart. actually, I probably should have started with a popsicle stick to pry instead of cutting, hehe - might have kept the seam nicer looking.
I tried to open up my sonic, it now looks like the screwdriver after the Doctor pumped up the radiation of the x-ray machine 5 thousand percent, killed my sonic, dead.
hehe nonono, sorry...I should have a link to a schematic in the sidebar. Though, the infrared/IR transmitter chip, the TINY-IR2 (though you could use other ones from other sources or companies, if available, i just liked this one cause it was so simple and small, but whatever you can fit inside the sonic basically and use it's matched receiver chip) - just sits in a cavity in the upper part, and you need to just leave the sonic's sound chip where it is, except for....
...soldering the necessary wires for the transmitter and + and - wires, to it... Though, I do wish there was a good sound chip out there to record better sonic or other sounds onto and use in the sonic...but most are of not good quality if small, or need lots of extra components, or are too big to fit into the sonic.
btw, i think i burnt up my receiver chip...will be a while before i get another to play with. (gotta be very careful to follow the schematics i guess, hehe - sometimes i really flub up my good ideas as such)
yes...if you know how to mold plastic as such, which i don't, hehe. possibly what might be interesting is to get a lapidary [rock/stone smithy] to form a glass/crystal or other clear stone cabachon that would fit on top. or thinking glass, there are some glass blowers/makers that might be able to help you.
Absolutely...might cost a bit to find the right chips, etc. Though, for a couple bucks i got one of those keychain universal remote things, to see if it would work - haven't taken it apart yet though, because otherwise it is wider than i thought and I'd have to cut it apart to possibly reconfigure where all the parts go, but it also only does a few things on my tv, which are just the sound, not on or off...
Though, if i feel clever sometime, I was thinking I could use my current chip which has 5 channels/buttons, and then just wire its matching receiver chip into my tv's button controls anyway, and that'd work just the same - although, they have a bit longer 14 or 16-pin chips with 8 channels...actually, I really wanna just make my own personalized and style "sonic screwdriver" that i can design with room for all kinds of neat fun things inside...hehe maybe someday though...
U cant fool me . It's just that some how it responds as a mobile phone to the tardis or u've linked it up to controls and ure freinds switchin it on. That explanes the wires.
hehe yay! my first critic... I sometimes wonder about people these days in the sense that they may understand how to turn on tv and cell phone, but no clue how the things work. That's why when I say its really quite simple, just a basic infrared LED communication circuit, most would think it too easy to be true. What can I say, I get bored, and I enjoy dr.who stuff, and making props better, or have some practical real world application as well.
well, I bought the chipset from rentron company. from whatever the page says its 38-40khz. its really simple to use actually, just buy the transmitter and receiver chips, add a few simple parts such as the resistors, and find a place in the sonic to hide the little transmitter chip. hehe, the only thinking I had to do making such, was how to fit parts inside the sonic, not really the details of how it works. I wish they made an smt/smd version, cause that'd take up a lot less room.
Here's an idea a friend of mine was kicking around. Using wireless technology like this to trigger actual electronic door locks, such as a car alarm! Think it can be done using similar principles? :)
I know it can be done. I had had the idea also, but no car alarm or electronic car lock to play with. How to go about it though, exactly, would seem too much to explain for here perhaps though.
dexantares - in mine, they must have glued the blue part onto one half really darn good, and I'm afraid of breaking it totally. As for UV LED, I can't find my first sonic's parts, but I'm sure it came with UV - just that it appears blue when shined thru the blue top.
PrinceV - I haven't chosen an adhesive yet. I still want to work out everything I want to do on the inside first, and if I want to add any additional micro-sensors and things, so it'll be a while.
The original Sonic Screwdriver toy did have the UV LED. The Sonic Pen set version switched to the same bright blue as the Pen itself, which I find infinitely more practical. As I mentioned, I've busted open a slew of spare parts, and i always have the same problem: Getting the emitter halves to fit flush again once they've been opened. there's always such an ugly gap along the seam when I'm done. Thought you might wanna know. Be careful!
I just got my sonic screwdriver in the mail, however the light DOES NOT work at all.
This was the screwdriver model that was bundled with the sonic pen.
I wondered if it was the wiring or perhaps the LED that may be no good, but I'm absolutely terrified to take it apart in fear I won't get it back together.
ah, yep...I'm pretty sure I know what happened. my first sonic was the one without the pen - and the wiring inside was fine. though the one with the pen, whoever or whatever machine put it together, squished the LED wire in the top. mine still lighted, but when I took it apart, it was so stuck it left a piece where it connected there. so what you may have to do is manage to get the top half off, and resolder the wire together. makes for a good excuse to play around in there anyway, also.
I've been contemplating on dropping another $20+ on a new set, but I may just take this up to a Radio Shack and see if they might help me out in fixing it.
What kind of adhesive are you using to patch this all back together?
hehe oh, almost forgot...make sure you put the batteries in the right way. [not that I initially put them backwards myself, but when fitting things in once, I accidentally soldered the + and - wires backward.]
Oooooh, very nice work~ All I've been able to do with mine is craft an actual set of screwdriver tips. I'd love to see switchable LED colours, or even a UV LED in a Sonic Pen. Any thoughts on the subject?
thanks...I'm just glad I came across the small chip - otherwise it was quite bulky internals I was trying before. As for different LED colors, it seems simple enough to change such. Though, if you want different colored sonic-emitter top, I am not sure what to do about that...still can't even get the blue one off, just to be able to work around it on the inside plastic. Though, shining different colored LEDs thru the blue top might alter the LED's color.
You can't get the dome out? Huh. I've opened up a few emitters myself, and if you can do that, popping out the dome shouldn't be so difficult. Anyway, have you tried any alterations to the Sonic Pen? I'd love to replace the LED with a UV version in mine, but I'm afraid to open it up. Besides, I'm not great with electronics.
How were you able to take apart the emitter head?

Haha well I'll be honest, I'm better with computers than anything you're putting together in these videos^^ But instead of buying an IR remote, if I had an extra clicker laying around could I take that apart and use those parts? That way I'd know it's already programmed for the lock. I mean, does the clicker really need that whole thing inside of it just to unlock the door? I realize this may be difficult to respond to over the comments, but thank you for trying =)
haydenjohn8 2 years ago
well, if you mean one of the keychain or key unlock things people have for their cars, then yeah...you could likely somehow take them apart and find a way to reassemble them into a sonic body...
saturnjason 2 years ago
Hi there, I'm trying to turn my sonic screwdriver into an Oyster card surrogate but I can't seem to get the LED head to split apart because it looks as if it's moulded tight - how did you get it to break and was it involved?
Brooschlee 2 years ago
hehe sorry...been very busy lately...though, what's an oyster card? and as for splitting the head, i used a very thin exacto knife to very carefully run along the seams on either side....until i could pull them apart by hand...
saturnjason 2 years ago
WOW! i am totaly amazed, could you show me how you made it?
luigikart44 2 years ago
You should make a version of the Master's laser screwdriver that can light matches from across a room. You can make a laser pointer out of the diode on a DVD burner that can do that, though I forget where I saw the vid.
CrystalSoulslayer 2 years ago
not sure i follow, sorry..
saturnjason 2 years ago
no you can make sonic screw drivers and they do open locks just not lock them and you make them out of laser burners and they don't make the sound
tucker14261 2 years ago
this may sound reli stupid and u may fink im crazy but i fink i kno how to make a real sonic screwdriver only to open locks and doors and that none of the fancy stuff
harrywatts121 2 years ago
then i'm sure many of us would like to see such, if you would either make one or show how to do so :)
saturnjason 2 years ago
wellll wen i get all the parts then i will show everyone
harrywatts121 2 years ago
that is so amasing!
Whitestar17a 2 years ago
thanks.
saturnjason 2 years ago
Lol. That is awesome! I just got my sonic screwdriver and it doesn't even work *hangs head*, but if it did, I'd try making this.
tlazic 2 years ago
which sonic is it? some it's been noticed, have been damaged in manufacture it seems. something about such as when I opened mine to play around, one of the wires to the light or speaker was pinched and basically cut in half between the two part halves...
saturnjason 2 years ago
It's the little plastic one. Like the one in your video. It didn't even give off light, but i soldered the wire back to the button. But still, no sound. I guess I'll have to look more closely.
tlazic 2 years ago
do you have the LED torch? or the sonic screwdriver pen. the torch doesn't give off sound at all and there have been manufacturing problems, rare stock don't function properly.
keenan150 2 years ago
ah good point keenan - I have the smaller one also which is just the flashlight, but I was referring to the difference I had with the UV version and the Blue+sonic pen double-pack version...btw, I finished up a more permanent version of my r/c sonic in another vid I made recently...though, I am sure people could take the sonic chip out of an old sonic or the pen. as well as the r/c chip and LED and put them into the smaller flashlight version...
saturnjason 2 years ago
wow... i wonder how you could fit all that into a tiny led flashlight :D
keenan150 2 years ago
hehe difficult, but possible...luckily there are small and not so many parts - but still not a lot of space, so gotta work carefully and delicately.
saturnjason 2 years ago
well best of luck to you :D
keenan150 2 years ago
this is an usb tardis
cutepolygon3d 2 years ago
um...yeah...I've referenced why i use it already - as an activation-"report" thingy, much more interesting for me at least than a simple light. hence, instead of an LED that blinks on/off, I wired into my tardis usb switch, so it would be more like the show in a "pretend" sense, and allow my sonic screwdriver to "activate" my tardis. or were you referring to some other aspect of such perhaps? :)
saturnjason 2 years ago
I am a fan of Doctor Who I LIKE MORE THE FIRST SEASEON sorry for my english XD
cutepolygon3d 2 years ago
thats well cool :0
cartmankid95 2 years ago
advance on it? sorry if i'm a bit tired to better understand what you mean...though, I did make a couple newer vids with some cool new lighting effects. though, if you are referring to more advanced microprocessor signalling and programming to stick in the sonic, that's where my skills end unfortunately, hehe.
saturnjason 2 years ago
Did you ever advance on this? I was looking into fitting some sort of infrared transmitter that would control my Mac.
greenturtle985 2 years ago
IR stands for InfraRed right? then you use the infrared as an activater right?
J0hnnyH4ck3r 3 years ago
yep...
saturnjason 3 years ago
that is so stupid and fake
EmoChick321123 3 years ago
aw, c'mon, how can you dismiss it when you haven't even tried it? let alone, studied or understand the electronics involved... :) and there's no way to please everyone, I learned that long ago, hehe. I'm more surprised nobody else yet seems to have at least put the basic circuit together to try, let alone tried putting it into a sonic. I'm hoping some other fans are on the ball, and show their results sometime relatively soon.
saturnjason 3 years ago
that is so stupid & fake
EmoChick321123 3 years ago
where did you get your sonic screwdriver?
J0hnnyH4ck3r 3 years ago
amazon
saturnjason 3 years ago
can you tell us the components that create this cool thing cuz i wanna make one!
J0hnnyH4ck3r 3 years ago
well, i wish I could have known of time lapse whathaveyou for making an as-I-work vid as such. though, back when i made it, i was just in the mood to work til finished...[all day, if not several, hehe...I forget]. which components are you referring to though? there's really nothing much to it. tiny-IR2 chipset, matching IR LED's/rcvr, few resistors, some wire, etc. I keep making notes of neat things I could put into a sonic still, but 1) lacking extra money,
saturnjason 3 years ago
and 2) wanting a better than plastic sonic to work with. if I had one that all the parts/pieces came apart better, it would be easier to access and design in such spaces/areas. but only having the top to jam everything down into, makes it very difficult to design where switches especially could be practically placed. and likely I wouldn't be able to use the extension part of the sonic. though without the extension, such frees up a lot of space for microcircuits. [I'm sleepy now, hehe]
saturnjason 3 years ago
i mean the on/off switch using light receiving diode...
J0hnnyH4ck3r 3 years ago
oh...there are no on/off switches for the transmitter. It has a sleep mode when the button is not pressed, which only uses 1 millionth of an amp, so basically doesn't suck the battery for a looong time if not used regularly.
saturnjason 3 years ago
you are a genious like the doctor LOL
J0hnnyH4ck3r 3 years ago
wow, you are clever! That's so brilliant, the way the sonic screwdriver activates the TARDIS!
charmedonetwo3 3 years ago
hobbitbox - hehe, sorry to hear...
though, I think maybe fans ought to start making their own versions anyhow. there was supposed to be some mfx version made of metal or such (which i don't think they have on the market yet), whereas these toy versions are very much limited to any modifications, mostly because being plastic - its just a sort of mess to work with and otherwise. I saw on flickr some guys that had made their own version, with some elements of such being very interesting.
saturnjason 3 years ago
I really want the futuristic/River Song sonic screwdriver.
PSPhenom 3 years ago
they sellin' them here yet? I wonder how they make it change from blue to red - anyone got one that can explain, or know otherwise?
saturnjason 3 years ago
i have got one it is fantastic the only thing is it has a ring to put your finger round and that can get annoying if you want to use it quickly. But changing from red to Blue is AMAZING!! it also has this pannel under the cover and its also amazing. well worth the money!! if your planning on getting one BUY IT QUICKLY too many people want one!! The batteries are extramly easy to get too a lot easier than the old screwdriver!! GOOD LUCK WITH GETTING ONE!!!

i wish doctor who toy makers will employ you- so many of their toys could be so much improved with your ideas... dr who toys are often relatively limited in what they actually do - and are often relatively expensive considering the limits of each toy.... to have bonus additions like your ideas would be magical for any kid or adult-
cheers for the full info on converting it too- and will have a think bout any over conversions to dr whos toys that'd be good too and hope others do too.........

hehe that'd be great. though, I don't have a regular job anyway.
yeah, i'd really like to see what other ideas or creations other dr.who fans have or can come up with...
saturnjason 3 years ago
which tip piece? the whole emitter top as it were, or the blue part? hehe cause I still can't get the blue part off, glued on very well...if the whole emitter, then you just need to VERY CAREFULLY use an exacto knife along the side-seam edges...then perhaps stick something like a popsicle stick thru the middle to use to help pry things apart. actually, I probably should have started with a popsicle stick to pry instead of cutting, hehe - might have kept the seam nicer looking.
saturnjason 3 years ago
I tried to open up my sonic, it now looks like the screwdriver after the Doctor pumped up the radiation of the x-ray machine 5 thousand percent, killed my sonic, dead.
Oops!
hobbitbox 3 years ago
how did u get ur sonic screwdrivers tip peice to come off? if been trying to take it off to fix mine plez tell
billsne 3 years ago
so you remove the chip? and replace it?
how will the screwdriver remember the sound isnt it reading the chip??
gadgetboy17 3 years ago
hehe nonono, sorry...I should have a link to a schematic in the sidebar. Though, the infrared/IR transmitter chip, the TINY-IR2 (though you could use other ones from other sources or companies, if available, i just liked this one cause it was so simple and small, but whatever you can fit inside the sonic basically and use it's matched receiver chip) - just sits in a cavity in the upper part, and you need to just leave the sonic's sound chip where it is, except for....
saturnjason 3 years ago
...soldering the necessary wires for the transmitter and + and - wires, to it... Though, I do wish there was a good sound chip out there to record better sonic or other sounds onto and use in the sonic...but most are of not good quality if small, or need lots of extra components, or are too big to fit into the sonic.
saturnjason 3 years ago
btw, i think i burnt up my receiver chip...will be a while before i get another to play with. (gotta be very careful to follow the schematics i guess, hehe - sometimes i really flub up my good ideas as such)
saturnjason 3 years ago
Okay, since you can get blue LEDS... would it be possible to throw in green ones and mod the tip so it can be clear?
K1dP5ycho 3 years ago
yes...if you know how to mold plastic as such, which i don't, hehe. possibly what might be interesting is to get a lapidary [rock/stone smithy] to form a glass/crystal or other clear stone cabachon that would fit on top. or thinking glass, there are some glass blowers/makers that might be able to help you.
saturnjason 3 years ago
im really impressed.
Are you the doctor? lol
Erika2217 3 years ago
hehe no...but he's an inspiration.
saturnjason 3 years ago
Man. Totally cool. I have gone and ordered one. Might see what i can get it to do... I will let you know if I have any sucess. You have inspired me!
melludolgur 3 years ago
That is great. So, potentially you could get an emitter of the right frequency and control something like your TV's off button or something... yes?
melludolgur 3 years ago
Absolutely...might cost a bit to find the right chips, etc. Though, for a couple bucks i got one of those keychain universal remote things, to see if it would work - haven't taken it apart yet though, because otherwise it is wider than i thought and I'd have to cut it apart to possibly reconfigure where all the parts go, but it also only does a few things on my tv, which are just the sound, not on or off...
saturnjason 3 years ago
Though, if i feel clever sometime, I was thinking I could use my current chip which has 5 channels/buttons, and then just wire its matching receiver chip into my tv's button controls anyway, and that'd work just the same - although, they have a bit longer 14 or 16-pin chips with 8 channels...actually, I really wanna just make my own personalized and style "sonic screwdriver" that i can design with room for all kinds of neat fun things inside...hehe maybe someday though...
saturnjason 3 years ago
It works critics - it works
traitsproductions 3 years ago
U cant fool me . It's just that some how it responds as a mobile phone to the tardis or u've linked it up to controls and ure freinds switchin it on. That explanes the wires.
LordRammasus 3 years ago
hehe yay! my first critic... I sometimes wonder about people these days in the sense that they may understand how to turn on tv and cell phone, but no clue how the things work. That's why when I say its really quite simple, just a basic infrared LED communication circuit, most would think it too easy to be true. What can I say, I get bored, and I enjoy dr.who stuff, and making props better, or have some practical real world application as well.
saturnjason 3 years ago
How do you know what frequancy to link it up at? I'm not exactly sure how remotes work, but that's pretty cool.
RoninEXS 3 years ago
well, I bought the chipset from rentron company. from whatever the page says its 38-40khz. its really simple to use actually, just buy the transmitter and receiver chips, add a few simple parts such as the resistors, and find a place in the sonic to hide the little transmitter chip. hehe, the only thinking I had to do making such, was how to fit parts inside the sonic, not really the details of how it works. I wish they made an smt/smd version, cause that'd take up a lot less room.

hehe, but I improved it...gave it a practical purpose/application. I did it out of wuv.
saturnjason 3 years ago
Here's an idea a friend of mine was kicking around. Using wireless technology like this to trigger actual electronic door locks, such as a car alarm! Think it can be done using similar principles? :)
dexantares 3 years ago
I know it can be done. I had had the idea also, but no car alarm or electronic car lock to play with. How to go about it though, exactly, would seem too much to explain for here perhaps though.
saturnjason 3 years ago
dexantares - in mine, they must have glued the blue part onto one half really darn good, and I'm afraid of breaking it totally. As for UV LED, I can't find my first sonic's parts, but I'm sure it came with UV - just that it appears blue when shined thru the blue top.
PrinceV - I haven't chosen an adhesive yet. I still want to work out everything I want to do on the inside first, and if I want to add any additional micro-sensors and things, so it'll be a while.
saturnjason 3 years ago
The original Sonic Screwdriver toy did have the UV LED. The Sonic Pen set version switched to the same bright blue as the Pen itself, which I find infinitely more practical. As I mentioned, I've busted open a slew of spare parts, and i always have the same problem: Getting the emitter halves to fit flush again once they've been opened. there's always such an ugly gap along the seam when I'm done. Thought you might wanna know. Be careful!
dexantares 3 years ago
Ok, maybe you can help me then!
Can you please help me?
PrinceValmont 3 years ago
ah, yep...I'm pretty sure I know what happened. my first sonic was the one without the pen - and the wiring inside was fine. though the one with the pen, whoever or whatever machine put it together, squished the LED wire in the top. mine still lighted, but when I took it apart, it was so stuck it left a piece where it connected there. so what you may have to do is manage to get the top half off, and resolder the wire together. makes for a good excuse to play around in there anyway, also.
saturnjason 3 years ago
Ah, ok. Thank you so much.
I've been contemplating on dropping another $20+ on a new set, but I may just take this up to a Radio Shack and see if they might help me out in fixing it.
What kind of adhesive are you using to patch this all back together?
PrinceValmont 3 years ago
hehe oh, almost forgot...make sure you put the batteries in the right way. [not that I initially put them backwards myself, but when fitting things in once, I accidentally soldered the + and - wires backward.]
saturnjason 3 years ago
Oooooh, very nice work~ All I've been able to do with mine is craft an actual set of screwdriver tips. I'd love to see switchable LED colours, or even a UV LED in a Sonic Pen. Any thoughts on the subject?
dexantares 3 years ago
thanks...I'm just glad I came across the small chip - otherwise it was quite bulky internals I was trying before. As for different LED colors, it seems simple enough to change such. Though, if you want different colored sonic-emitter top, I am not sure what to do about that...still can't even get the blue one off, just to be able to work around it on the inside plastic. Though, shining different colored LEDs thru the blue top might alter the LED's color.
saturnjason 3 years ago
You can't get the dome out? Huh. I've opened up a few emitters myself, and if you can do that, popping out the dome shouldn't be so difficult. Anyway, have you tried any alterations to the Sonic Pen? I'd love to replace the LED with a UV version in mine, but I'm afraid to open it up. Besides, I'm not great with electronics.
dexantares 3 years ago
wow cool!
