Actually, several combinations can be used.
I usually push a male threaded coupling in from the inside, then use a female threaded coupling on the outside.
However, a threaded T can also be used outside.
Depends on the exact situation.
I would suggest using no less than 3/4inch fittings. 1/2 can be used but the small diameter reduces the flow rate. Slow in, slow out.
Try to find high quality neophrene washers for the assembly. Even high priced washers prove worth the price.
