Mexico's government needs to do more to root out drug kingpins and violence. I haven't been there in 20 years and have no desire to return until the violence stops. Nearly every month you hear of abductions and killings. The Mexican tourism dept has a tough job; I sympathize with them but trying to convince people that it is safe there is ludicrous. Too bad members of the Mexican drug cartel are so greedy and doped up that they fail to see how they've destroyed their country's economic system.
I'm mexican and we have problems as many countries, what foreigners is only bad news. So we did a research... we asked almost 400 students how did they feel during their stay in Mexico. Are students that are living here for at least 6 months (not tourists). We asked them to rate us, where 10 was totally safe and 1 totally unsafe. 76% of them rated Jalisco above 7. And let me share with you one more result: 97% said they would recommend studying and living here, of course they wanna come back.

I've been to Mexico. The food is bad, if you walk outside of your hotel you end up surrounded by run down homes which TOTALLY ruin the whole "paradise" feel of the place. Don't get me wrong though, the ocean and wild life are beautiful, just make sure that you don't get lost in a city, you'll probably get mugged.
