3 amazing episodes, althought with "the daleks" episode, the last 3 episodes i think they cud do without, they shouldn't of extended it with the missing fluid link, when they escaped was when they should of moved on. oh well, still amazing
Fantastic! Absolutely great! Really gets the spirit of the early days of Who (and how blumming good William Hartnell was!). May I ask, what's the music used?
Excellent! You've chosen some of my favourite imagery: the Doctor running for the Tardis across the palaeolithic desert, the Dalek hallucinating after taking the anti-radiation drugs, the fire illuminating the travellers' faces as they watch Za and Kal slug it out. The first two stories really did have some terrific production values. We're lucky that the show was blessed with some rare talents from its earliest days: William Hartnell, Waris Hussein, Christopher Barry, Barry Newbery, Ray Cusick.
The way you've presented the Daleks in this trailer make it seem like the movie 'Alien' and they seem more terrifying in this trailer then the Daleks have been recently. I just ordered this on DVD and it should be coming any day now. Great job on the trailer!
good grief, it's just a trailer and a very nice one, there's no point in getting so bent out of shape. and besides, i'd contest that there is no sound less haunting than radiophonic's creations of the early 70s (check out the Sea Devils soundtrack, just noise, not music). It's all a matter of opinion.
Oh hell don't get me started on the sea devils soundtrack.. I've studied it for years in admiration! Malcolm Clarke's master piece was much more than just noise. For example the 'Master Theme?' Was that just sounds? Just because it isn't a full orchestra Doesn't mean it has no Chords, or Structure etc! The Synthe 100 ("Delaware") Boasted several True Analog Oscillators, Multiple Filters, Glass Tube Valves, etc, the stuff of Raw Modular Magic! Todays stuff is shit in comparion. No Creativity.
Alright so we disagree, that's that. I do think Babelcolour's trailer is pretty impressive no matter what you think of the music though, I think the editing is quite good, and I like the choice of clips, especially the one he chose to end on. I felt it worked very well. Honestly he made Unearthly Child look more exciting then it was (or at least more so than I remember it. I definitely enjoyed The Daleks more).
Thats a narrow and ignorant way of looking at it. The Themes of Doctor who have changed overtime and the new one has addressed issues that has always been on the watchers mind. If you studied the new episodes as closely as the Sea devils music, you'll see that RTD stayed very close to the and even continued stories from the pre RTD era.
The episode with the Tochlafane was one of the most shocking emotionally I have ever seen along with Torchwoods Children of the earth.
Ah.. Doctor Who at it's best. Such a shame how shit it has become now tho. Dr Who is camp, girl power soap opera in space with love & emotion as it's theme. RTD can kiss my arse.
Dr Who should be about mystery, peril, adventure, dark terrors.. Not about the companions. Or the companions Mum!
Anyway, if you haven't seen this, then you are missing out on REAL Dr Who!
I sorta agree and disagree. I think the families add more realism, but I think they've taken it too far. I have faith in Moffat to sort it out though.
I know what the music is, but since Babel said not to say what it is (at least, he did when the vid was first posted; Babel, what are your feelings about that now?), I can't say.
You know I have been thinking about it lately, and what if they did a movie of the first Doctor. Who would play who? There are many who would be good for the Doctor (Ian McKellen, John Hurt, hell may be even David Bowie! may be.) The other companions I would like hear ideas on but the one i'm really having a tuff time with is Susan. Dose any one out there have any Ideas?
Gonna get this next week. Can't wait! Looks fantastic! I also have the Bred For War (BRILLIANT) and Beneath the Surface (EVEN BETTER THAN BRILLIANT) boxsets!
Are you going to do the War Machines? I absolutely love it! One of my all time faves just on the basis of the one scene of all these soldiers running in terror while Hartnell walks foward fearlessly. Just such a powerful image!
I'd love to see more of the box sets receive this kind of treatment, such as the Davros or Sontaran collections. It could add a sense of continuity to the collected stories, given how far apart many of them aired from each other.
The first episode of An Unearthly Child really is quite brilliant, for those who mentioned they haven't seen Hartnell stories. The viewer is left wondering if the Doctor is the hero or villain of the series, much like McCoy's second season.
Such a brilliant trailer, this makes me want to get it, I love how it makes it look like there's more action and adventure in the episodes than there actually was!
This is absolute genious! Excellent musical score and everything fits perfectly. Perhaps the best parts of this trailer are when it goes quiet, you can hear Susan screaming "Grandfather" and the words 'The Daleks' comes up on the screen. Such an effective combination that you just don't see very often these days.
And at the end where Billy says "Could it be possible that... that this is the end?" and then it says 'The Beginning'. Amazing stuff!
Thank you SnakesOnAPlane. I really glad you enjoyed it, and those two sections you mentioned were my favourite bits too! I was especially pleased by the final juxtaposition of "this is the end" and "The Beginning". I delighted you picked up on those :)
I think some of the directorial choices were a little stronger in the pilot. Some of the shots and framing are much more dramatic and beautiful than the alternatives that made it to transmission.
The beginning DVD Set was a present I will treasure ALWAYS! Love the unaired pilot and the actual 1st episode!
You did a good job of highlighting the acting and intensity that was the impetus of Doctor Who. If not some of the dated concepts that tend to cause most to under appreciate Hartnell's era.
Even though I never grew up to see Doctor Who and William Hartnell's era was over 20 years before I was born, he is my favourite doctor. Without him playing the role the way he did, the show wouldnt have become the one that fans and viewers know and love.
This video shows how much decication the actors and the production team had back then.
Personally, I think the Coming Soon trailer for 'The War Machines' is an absolutely fantastic trailer. Some of them are poor, but that one really impressed me.
Fantastic work! If the episodes themselves were as action packed and dramatic as that, I'd shit a brick! Especially with the Edge of Destruction. Fantastic work!
now I want to rush out and buy these episodes from... somewhere... even though sense tells me that the better part of Unearthly Child was awful, boring, anthropological heresy. This trailer is just so damn good!
Wow! Ok, i am not ultimately a fan of the Hartnell peiod of Doctor Who, but this shows how serious it was and how brilliant the actors really were. Absolutely fabulous as usual!
Ok, that came out wrong! What i meant to say is that out fo the 10 Doctors, Hartnell is in the bottom five for me, everyone has a favourite Doctor. After watching this, i went up to my room, watched my Hartnell DVDs and watched it in a different way. Its not that i don't think he is a fab Doctor, because he is, but he is not my favourite!
That made me shiver. It makes me want to want those episodes all over again. I think they're great in the first place and you make a fantastic tribute to them.
If that trailer was broadcast on National Television, I would go straight to the DVD Store and buy 'The Beginning' DVD Box Set. FANTASTIC WORK, AND WELL DONE!
This is incredible. I only have a two minor complants, I think it would have been better as three seperate trailers, and the dalek one would have been better if it ended with "it is nearly completed." But other then that it is INCREDIBLE!
wonderful. Am putting this in my favourites for when people who never heard of the original Doctor is around, I can show them some great quality original who. You sure you don't work for 2entertain or the BBC? Stuff looks so professional.
Babel, I've subscribed to your channel for a while and have enormous respect for your colourisation efforts. Therefore it's a bit ironic that my first comment for one of your videos is on a black and white offering!!
However, this is simply excellent stuff. Many thanks for your countless hours of effort and long may it continue.
superb title sequence really well made. the trailer seems to make the edge of destruction far more interesting. (trouble with that episode was really the resolution
I think the main trouble with that story is that it is so unnaturalistic. Some very odd acting choices and artificial delivery of the dialogue. It was obviously intentional to make it all a bit wierder, but it seems very dated now and too much like a 1960s play.
i didnt get the over the top screamin at mealted clock faces n that. just seemed obserd. your trailer makes it look like its a story of someone being possessed by an alien. looks far more interesting. so very well done on ur editing
Oh so am I vanillaorchid, so am I! I don't think that particular story drags at all, even though it went on for ten weeks. And seeing it fully restored is making me itch with anticipation :)
I know, and I'm terribly excited by that release: I just adore 'The Romans'. It's one of my favourite stories. (And it contains the single best fluff in the history of Doctor Who - just watch how uncomfortable Tavius looks when he has to wait almost a minute to be asked what a positorium is! Hahahaha. It's sublimely painful to watch)
I think 'Midnight' rather inspired my choice of quotes for this trailer - the idea that there was an alien hiding inside one of the crew. It's a bit deceptive though - the episode has nothing to do with that at all!

(trouble with that episode was really the resolution
tardiselliot 3 years ago
I think the main trouble with that story is that it is so unnaturalistic. Some very odd acting choices and artificial delivery of the dialogue. It was obviously intentional to make it all a bit wierder, but it seems very dated now and too much like a 1960s play.

yeah i know what u mean.
i didnt get the over the top screamin at mealted clock faces n that. just seemed obserd. your trailer makes it look like its a story of someone being possessed by an alien. looks far more interesting. so very well done on ur editing

Great trailer Babel.
Personally I'm very excited about The War Games being released this year.

Oh so am I vanillaorchid, so am I! I don't think that particular story drags at all, even though it went on for ten weeks. And seeing it fully restored is making me itch with anticipation :)
BabelColour 3 years ago
Oh yes. The ten episodes fly by, and I always get choked up in the final episode.

I also felt like crying when I saw the final episode of the war games.

Amazing trailer, and such an incredible tension build up. I need to go and re-watch them now!

Excellent work, it's not long until The Romans and The Chase are released on DVD.
phoenixshroud 3 years ago
I know, and I'm terribly excited by that release: I just adore 'The Romans'. It's one of my favourite stories. (And it contains the single best fluff in the history of Doctor Who - just watch how uncomfortable Tavius looks when he has to wait almost a minute to be asked what a positorium is! Hahahaha. It's sublimely painful to watch)

Fantastic! You actually made Edge of Destruction look interesting! ;P
I love the way you cut together The Daleks trailer. Amazingness!
JoelCornah 3 years ago
Hahahaha. 'The Edge Of Destruction' is certainly an odd storey. Very stagey - like a 1960s edition of 'Play For Today'. But it has its merits.

Wowzer. That's stupendous!

the new episode midnight uses fear in the same way as the edge of destruction.
Shimah930 3 years ago
I think 'Midnight' rather inspired my choice of quotes for this trailer - the idea that there was an alien hiding inside one of the crew. It's a bit deceptive though - the episode has nothing to do with that at all!

i got this in 2007 for my birthday. great boxset and brilliant trailer! 10/10
