if they did do everything original with this box set there wouldnt be any purpose of getting it and then you could just find Oh By The Way and get it instead
@nirvanafoo98 True - but there was no need to release "The Discovery Box Set" a mere four years after the super "Oh, By The Way" set. It smacks of profiteering and milking the cash cow.
Thanks for your great overview of the new Discovery editions.i agree with you. I was realy pissed off how bad the artwork was. Very thin, easy to break, cheap looking digipacks. Very unusable. It nearly feels like "Let's make this realy cheap so they destroy these very quickly and buy them again on Itumes" I sold the ones I bought. Coudn't stand them.
This a very good unboxing. I could've gotten this box for Christmas but I got The Dark Side of The Moon Immersion Box. By the way the original Wish You Were Here "handshake" sleeve is available with the remastered Experience version CD and the remastered Vinyl edition.
Darren I know you hate this box set as much as I hate compact cds. But I believe that there is people being selfish with young guys like me who doesnt know what is to open a new release from a good band and not even open a new LP. For you this may be crap, but for me (15 years old) is pure gold.
Very entertaining and informative review. I am very much a purist, and I love the Oh By the Way Box Set. The Discovery Set, though a pretty sweet deal for the money, just doesn't appeal to me. Not a big remastering fan either. How good does it have to sound? As long as the quality is at least as good as the original vinyl, I'm happy.
I have a suggestion that you might think would be cool. What if you made a video compiling your thoughts and experiences with all 14 albums, like sort of a mega review? I think that would be quite interesting, but I'm not sure if you'd want to do that or not.
@vrooomuk Yea i noticed you had some prog review videos, so thats where the idea of ' Well imagine him doing that but with Pink Floyd chronologically' What's interesting is, that idea never actually would have came about if i never heard you call The Dark Side of The Moon "Legendary" in your Discovery Set Unboxing. That is my favourite album by them, and its nice to see people who enjoy that as opposed to people only acknowledging The Wall's existence which believe it or not, they do exist :-)
nice that you ask darren you can show in youtube your discography (you know like silent night the luckiest msn in the world god pays debt without money and all the rest) show them the booklet the cd and tell some things about the making of the album
@MRMADDNES1328 I've never thought of that. I am not sure anyone would be interested. But hey, I guesss it is something to do. Thanks for the suggestion!
Nice detailed review. I've got the "Oh By The Way" (Mini LP Replica) set and plan to keep it. Don't plan on buying this box set ... but it was nice to see what it looked like. How did it sound in comparison to the Oh By The Way set? Believe this set was suppose to feature remastered CD(s) ... however the old recordings sounded quite nice to me to begin with ... not sue if they really needed remastering.
@HalenNotHagar1984 Sorry you are a couple of months too late - I offloaded this on eBay when I could still get a decent price for it. But thanks for the offer!
The Wall was the first album I got from the Discovery remasters, AND the first Pink Floyd album I ever got. And believe me, when I saw the CDs, the smile of excitement just dissapeared. I mean, triangles.... really?!
I noticed this box set dosen't have "pulse". When that was released it had a blinking red light on the side. Also "Delicate Sound Of Thunder" Maybe because those were mostly live albums.
Really? You don't like "The Final Cut"? One of my Fav. The new mastering is not the same because you can't here the background talking as much. I like how you said "see how they fucked this one up". I think they did, I agree with you on the CD art. I got the 25th Anniversary of Dark Side Of The Moon at the time it was released . It came in a box & it has the same book as this one.
@EggWS94 The "improvements" are minimal. Though others are quick to correct and bleat about how superior the "Discovery" editions are. For me, Pink Floyd's albums are pretty well mastered from the beginning so there's not a lot to worry about. I prefer the "Oh, By The Way" set because it features all the albums in their proper packaging and sleeve designs. The new set is too much of a departure for me.
@vrooomuk I think that the Discovery boxset is good but why do they have to do the artwork not like the original artwork was? I'm 17 now and I buy the old Vinyl to have the original artwork. I'm thinking of buying the complete catalogue again on CD though I have it already. But I want to have the original artwork and the sound of the 2011 Masters on CD, so the "Oh By The Way" Boxset is the right choice, isn't it?
@EggWS94 It all depends what you value the most: the authentic experience of owning the original albums with the original artwork or the latest mastering of the audio? I am thinking of doing a video showing "Oh, By The Way" as I've had this question asked so many times before. When you see it, you will make up your own mind... ;-)
You don't know how jealous I am. I t was either the mono box for beatles or this, and I chose mono box being the huge beatlehead I am, but if I get money for christmas, u kno where its going :P This looks amazing
@GamecubeLPs I'd pick this over Beatles any day. I am into Beatles too, and they were my absolute favorite band until I started listening to Pink Floyd for real. Not a single day goes by without me listening to their music.
One thing I'd like to know however, is why the mono box set is more expensive than the stereo. What makes mono better? :/
@lololFilip I own the stereo, and its great. The mono doesn't have as many cd's, being that mono lp's went out of print by the time the beatles started to end, but the cd's are packaged like LP's, and they sound like they did in the 60s, but remastered.
Planning on buying this boxset. Thanks for the upload. And by the way, Ive got a really un-usual question, that youve probably never gotten before. What do you do when you listen to music. Like how would you listen to this boxset.
@HardDaysNight44 When I listen to music, I tend to strip completely naked and paint my arse blue. Then I jiggle around in time to the music so that my genitalia appears to dance to the beat. :P
@HardDaysNight44 It all depends where I am and what I am doing. Sometimes I listen at my computer on headphones, sometimes I have the CD on in the living room with my hi-fi, sometimes I listen on my iPod when walking the dog, sometimes I listen on my iPod in bed. Is that a good enough answer?
@vrooomuk okay sorry, I was just wondering, because I cant find something to do for a while. I normally like to listen to a couple of albums during one sitting, but sometimes it takes a couple of hours, so you seem to have lots of music, so I was just wondering what you do.
@HardDaysNight44 That's the problem with modern music. With the advent of the CD, bands tended to try and fill a CD so albums grew longer. In the instance of Pink Floyd, most of their records last no more than 45 minutes (the double albums excepted, of course) - so you can tootle through them quickly. Plus, I don't have a life. Not having a life really helps...
That album is a bit of a downer? Try listening to yourself speak, you somehow managed to make this video depressing, a very difficult thing to do providing the circumstances. You are so NEGATIVE. The whole point is that it is remastered, try being a little more open minded. I came here exited, only to watch someone shit all over something which is just plain bad ass.
@acemisterxxx If you have beheld the beauty that is the "Oh, By The Way" box set you would understand why I am not the greatest fan of the artwork being redesigned. For my sins, I am a traditionalist when it comes to album artwork and whoever spearheaded this project, made a mess of it. But I wouldn't expect you to understand, because it sounds from your comment that you are one of those people who accepts everything without question. Each to their own, I say. Thanks for commenting.
@vrooomuk Kind of random assumption that could not be further from the truth, and yes, I have seen the box set you are referring to and no doubt it's very impressive. I personally like the new designs for the most part except for the themed triangles on every CD, but then again I am also part of that younger generation you were referring to in your video and I just recently fell in love with Pink Floyd, just ordered mine today as a matter of fact.
@acemisterxxx Also, you would understand there is a decent dollop of humour in my videos. A suggestion is that you could always watch them with the sound off and that way no-one would ever be offended. ;-)
If you also own the "Oh by the way" package or have heard it just two questions...Which cds do sound better? These on "Discovery" or the ones on "Oh by the way"? And by means of package designing which satisfies you most? This one or the "Oh by the way" one?
i don't like the way you carve in to the digi- packs with swissy dude. use micro- surgery instead like me.Ha Ha....did u buy the original saucerful of secrets album when it was released and have you still got it? i bet you did.?
I don't really mind the new designs of the albums. Except for The Wall. Damnit, is it so hard to make it the original blank cover? Anyway, all I really care about is the music.
@dobindave I can't speak for others, but I complain about "The Final Cut" because it is essentially a Roger Waters solo album and musically it is pretty weak.
@dobindave Because for better or worse, Floyd always did something musically different from album to album. To my ears, the Final Cut sounded like out takes from The Wall; like they had run into a wall both musically and professionally.
I've bought the box set from iTunes (which is it not like having the physical CD's), and I liked it alot. These new remasters sounds great! I'm a fan of Pink Floyd since 2006 and I started listening to the early CD versions, then the original vinyls. I feel like I'm "re-discovering" Pink Floyd's music again. Thank you for posting this awesome review and "unboxing" video.
@kfsfkakf You mean Oh By The Way? I'm trying to get a copy, too, but don't go for cheap because it's most likely a bootleg. What I've found out is if it's $200 or more (don't know UK price conversion if you live there, sorry) then it's the true set. Otherwise, you might end up with a bootleg trashy copy. I learned that the hard way. Luckily I got a refund. So it will be more expensive, but in better and more CD protective packaging.
@42guide42 Yes, I have that set. Maybe I should do an unboxing video for it so people can tell the difference between the official and bootlegged boxes? The UK price was cheaper than the current set - I think it was £129 originally.
your two videos cost over 350.00 but it will provide you with a life time of some of the greatest music ever recorded.. to bad they left out there live cd's. For that is what i find myself listing to the most.
@kingofpunk1977 It's a matter of debate. The question is whether you want to spend your money on this or the previous box set? In terms of sonic clarity - there's not much difference between the two, in my humble opinion. And if you like the original sleeves, you will choose the former over the latter.
@vrooomuk Over the weekend I compared the old vs new Floyd cd's round my friends who's hi-fi system isgenuine high end & the new remasters sound much better
I have the box set too, and I have to say I'm also dissapointed in the new Discovery design. I was really hoping for the album booklets to have some recording notes in them much like The Beatles remasters did.
Complaints aside, the music sounds fantastic. Many of the albums like Saucerful and More REALLY needed a good remastering, and they got just that here.
Awesome review though, had me laughing at a couple parts too ;)
@wooljam They now publish an alternative take of the photo only once commonly shown in the Japanese issues. The initial take shows Burning Man not leaning on incline per se.
The best is a toss up between Meddle and Animals with Animals just having the edge. The worst is The Final Cut because it is essentially a Roger Waters album in disguise...
@vrooomuk That really was supposed to be a compliment. I meant because I couldn't think of anyone in particular to compare your music, that it was quite original. I really should learn how to writer better. :p
Can you imagine the vast quantities of Pink Floyd stock on the planet? Landfill for the future. I have mixed feelings about these re-releases, as the band don't need the money, the label doesn't need the money (I assume) and these albums could now go into the public domain for all & sundry to consume. As you highlight, the artwork in places is incredibly mediocre & from what I've heard, in terms of actual sound quality, there is hardly any difference from the original cuts.
@NoBoogerHere There is no discernible difference from what I'm hearing as I work my way through. The same can also be said of the "Oh By The Way" box set. The remastered albums were just boosted a tiny amount over their original predecessors. The same can be said here. The changes are microscopic.
@NoBoogerHere I can imagine. I work for a small indie Reggae label and I understand the re-issue market from our perspective... certain old vintage material is pushed through a PC by an engineer, who tweaks the levels & frequencies etc. and that's that - a remix. Personally I nearly always prefer the original mix, when the band were likely to have been directly involved. Think I'll stick to my old CDs :-)
I can tell you were exhausted when you called Final Cut 'bloody awful' when that comment clearly should have been reserved for Momentary Lapse..
Lots of sadly missed opportunities on these editions ... I think the glossy worked well with most of the cds..and was very thrilled at the vibrancy of the cover for Animals
I don't believe that this box set is made only for people new to the band, I'm 14 and I know almost all the discography of the band thanks to an old uncle I have and his old discs but I want to have my own official stuff and I don't want to feel that the 60s aren't that far from our days.
A big hug from Colombia to another Pink Floyd big fan.
@Colddeed They don't hate them. They just don't think they're up to par with the rest of the albums. But they're part of the band's history, whether they like it or not, and they were going to be in here from the beginning. What I don't quite know is how Gilmour managed to convince Roger Waters to let him put the last two albums in the set.
Well, Roger seems to have mellowed out over the years. And the Live 8 reunion did allow the band to bury the hatchet, so it's not that surprising. 10 years ago I doubt he would have been as fine with it.
@Colddeed Well, he tried to keep them out of the Oh By the Way box, from 2007. In my opinion, though, those albums are certainly more Pink Floyd than Final Cut - even if they're not much good anyway.
i love floyd and own all the original albums and they sound great.fk buying these box sets to pay for there new ferrari's for the sake of a load of pictures.
Nice review here too! I guess that this "Discovery" box set is 100% about the sound. To be honest, the rest of the memorabilia / artwork is not as impressive as in the "shine on" box set. Just my two cents. Cheers!
QUESTION: for a new-comer into the world of pink floyd (didn't like them until this july this year) is this a nice way to get my hands on their discography? sounds nice?
@oopsbabyhung4 To be honest, this box set was designed for YOU. Yes, it was created for those people who want to discover the band for the first time. If you have the cash and want to discover the band in chronological order without waiting years for each album to be released, this is the set to get. Jump in and absorb it, my brother...
I agree with DemoManMLS, the CD labels are terrible! The Floyd could have done something better IMO...
Other than that, I'm very happy with my Discovery box set...
Also purchased yesterday, OBTW from the PF website. $240 delivered.... OUCH!!! It had better be the real McCoy and not one of those cheap Chineese knock-offs...
@donuthaters12 Well, the content for the Wall box set hasn't been absolutely confirmed so it is going to make your decision even harder. I would suggest that to solve this particular quandary, you might want to toss a coin.
@donuthaters12 That's a tough call, mate! If you want a "darker" record and like to dissect every single detail, I'd suggest you The Wall (my personal favorite), but then again, most of Pink Floyd's work goes on and on for years and never gets old... If you're searching a new way to approach Wish You Were Here, get it.
One thing is certain: it's amazing how these guys created music that affects each individual in a different, personal way!
@progrockcoffee haha me too. I was waiting to get the thing just to check if they'd actually be on there... and was excited when they were just stickers :)
the original artwork is nice but for me the music does the talking in the end. i'll buy it.

If you also own the "Oh by the way" package or have heard it just two questions...Which cds do sound better? These on "Discovery" or the ones on "Oh by the way"? And by means of package designing which satisfies you most? This one or the "Oh by the way" one?
P.S. your videos are really entertaining...
lapislazuli248 2 months ago
@lapislazuli248 I would always suggest you buy "Oh By The Way" it is a more satisfying package throughout.

@yessharp I wasn't even born when "Saucerful of Secrets" was released.

I don't really mind the new designs of the albums. Except for The Wall. Damnit, is it so hard to make it the original blank cover? Anyway, all I really care about is the music.

Why do people always moan about the final cut ?
dobindave 3 months ago 2

Thanks for showing this box set. I'm still probably gonna choose the older one though. Much cheaper and better
kfsfkakf 3 months ago
@kfsfkakf You mean Oh By The Way? I'm trying to get a copy, too, but don't go for cheap because it's most likely a bootleg. What I've found out is if it's $200 or more (don't know UK price conversion if you live there, sorry) then it's the true set. Otherwise, you might end up with a bootleg trashy copy. I learned that the hard way. Luckily I got a refund. So it will be more expensive, but in better and more CD protective packaging.
42guide42 3 months ago
@42guide42 Yes, I have that set. Maybe I should do an unboxing video for it so people can tell the difference between the official and bootlegged boxes? The UK price was cheaper than the current set - I think it was £129 originally.

your two videos cost over 350.00 but it will provide you with a life time of some of the greatest music ever recorded.. to bad they left out there live cd's. For that is what i find myself listing to the most.
RyanWehr 4 months ago
@RyanWehr Nah, I sold the Discovery box set on eBay last weekend. Probably do the same with the Immersion set too...
vrooomuk 4 months ago
@vrooomuk You made a mistake there cos sonically the new remasters are much better
kingofpunk1977 3 months ago
@kingofpunk1977 It's a matter of debate. The question is whether you want to spend your money on this or the previous box set? In terms of sonic clarity - there's not much difference between the two, in my humble opinion. And if you like the original sleeves, you will choose the former over the latter.
vrooomuk 3 months ago
@vrooomuk Over the weekend I compared the old vs new Floyd cd's round my friends who's hi-fi system isgenuine high end & the new remasters sound much better

I have the box set too, and I have to say I'm also dissapointed in the new Discovery design. I was really hoping for the album booklets to have some recording notes in them much like The Beatles remasters did.
Complaints aside, the music sounds fantastic. Many of the albums like Saucerful and More REALLY needed a good remastering, and they got just that here.
Awesome review though, had me laughing at a couple parts too ;)

The Final Cut is bloody awful - it's a Roger Waters solo album, isn't it?
A Momentary Lapse of Reason is a bit more satisfying - I'd rather listen to "One Slip" and "Learning to Fly" any day.. ;-)
vrooomuk 4 months ago
@vrooomuk I thought the final cut was OK in parts - it has some interesting ideas, but a little too pretentious & theatrical for my tastes.
NoBoogerHere 4 months ago
Can you imagine the vast quantities of Pink Floyd stock on the planet? Landfill for the future. I have mixed feelings about these re-releases, as the band don't need the money, the label doesn't need the money (I assume) and these albums could now go into the public domain for all & sundry to consume. As you highlight, the artwork in places is incredibly mediocre & from what I've heard, in terms of actual sound quality, there is hardly any difference from the original cuts.
NoBoogerHere 4 months ago
@NoBoogerHere There is no discernible difference from what I'm hearing as I work my way through. The same can also be said of the "Oh By The Way" box set. The remastered albums were just boosted a tiny amount over their original predecessors. The same can be said here. The changes are microscopic.
vrooomuk 4 months ago
@NoBoogerHere I can imagine. I work for a small indie Reggae label and I understand the re-issue market from our perspective... certain old vintage material is pushed through a PC by an engineer, who tweaks the levels & frequencies etc. and that's that - a remix. Personally I nearly always prefer the original mix, when the band were likely to have been directly involved. Think I'll stick to my old CDs :-)
NoBoogerHere 4 months ago
I can tell you were exhausted when you called Final Cut 'bloody awful' when that comment clearly should have been reserved for Momentary Lapse..
Lots of sadly missed opportunities on these editions ... I think the glossy worked well with most of the cds..and was very thrilled at the vibrancy of the cover for Animals
rmaiolo 4 months ago
I don't believe that this box set is made only for people new to the band, I'm 14 and I know almost all the discography of the band thanks to an old uncle I have and his old discs but I want to have my own official stuff and I don't want to feel that the 60s aren't that far from our days.
A big hug from Colombia to another Pink Floyd big fan.
PS: Sorry for my crap english
Magnificent881 4 months ago
I'm surprised the band even agreed to have UmmaGumma and AHM be part of this box set, since they seem to hate those albums.
Colddeed 4 months ago
@Colddeed They don't hate them. They just don't think they're up to par with the rest of the albums. But they're part of the band's history, whether they like it or not, and they were going to be in here from the beginning. What I don't quite know is how Gilmour managed to convince Roger Waters to let him put the last two albums in the set.
joethulhuz 4 months ago
@joethulhuz
Well, Roger seems to have mellowed out over the years. And the Live 8 reunion did allow the band to bury the hatchet, so it's not that surprising. 10 years ago I doubt he would have been as fine with it.
Colddeed 4 months ago
@Colddeed Well, he tried to keep them out of the Oh By the Way box, from 2007. In my opinion, though, those albums are certainly more Pink Floyd than Final Cut - even if they're not much good anyway.
joethulhuz 4 months ago
You should unbox the new Beach Boys box when it comes out.

QUESTION: for a new-comer into the world of pink floyd (didn't like them until this july this year) is this a nice way to get my hands on their discography? sounds nice?
oopsbabyhung4 4 months ago
@oopsbabyhung4 To be honest, this box set was designed for YOU. Yes, it was created for those people who want to discover the band for the first time. If you have the cash and want to discover the band in chronological order without waiting years for each album to be released, this is the set to get. Jump in and absorb it, my brother...

I agree with DemoManMLS, the CD labels are terrible! The Floyd could have done something better IMO...

donuthaters12 4 months ago
@donuthaters12 Well, the content for the Wall box set hasn't been absolutely confirmed so it is going to make your decision even harder. I would suggest that to solve this particular quandary, you might want to toss a coin.
vrooomuk 4 months ago
@vrooomuk no i'm only getting the discovery editions. i'm just on the fence between Wish You Were Here and The Wall
donuthaters12 4 months ago
@donuthaters12
Yeah, tough decision for sure... I'm getting both.
Just got DSOTM Immersion and Discovery... 5.1on the Blu-ray is awesome!!!
GrandpaBambu 4 months ago
@donuthaters12 That's a tough call, mate! If you want a "darker" record and like to dissect every single detail, I'd suggest you The Wall (my personal favorite), but then again, most of Pink Floyd's work goes on and on for years and never gets old... If you're searching a new way to approach Wish You Were Here, get it.
One thing is certain: it's amazing how these guys created music that affects each individual in a different, personal way!
TJNC100 4 months ago
@donuthaters12 The wall has more songs and it is more classic but I respect you if you decide Wish you Were Here
