Hey this is great. Lovely animation.

I bought Seth Lakeman's 'Freedom Fields' album a couple of years back, because of this song. And it is a fantastic piece of work - Even though I knew nothing of folk music at the time.

Isn't it based on an old West Country tale or song, something like that if I remember correctly?

Incidentally, I adore this video. I think it's stylish, graceful and intelligent. To me it compliments the feel of the music perfectly.

And I know the lack of lip-synching was a conscious decision rather than a lack of skill; if you have a look at some of Matthew's other work you'll see it's something he can and does do.

Firstly, just because I disagree doesn't mean your opinion is any less valid.

What I would say though is that you don't present your criticism objectively. You've just laid into Matt, who worked really hard on this piece. Doesn't it occur to you that firing a sawn-off shotgun of insults at his work is hurtful? If you think it's "ugly" and "ghastly", fine; everyone can have their opinion; what you're being "slated" for is your way of expressing that opinion.

well seeing everyone else seems to love it i dont think matt can really be that down about one lowly animation student slagging this off, and i'd rather shoot myself then have a look at his other stuff, i hate cgi in general so to be honest i was never going to like this.

So if you hate CGI in general, why slate Matt so personally? And yes, one person slagging it off is bound to be hurtful when you express it so unpleasantly. And refusing to see his other stuff smacks of bigotry. I'm just trying to help you see why it's hard to value your opinion when you express it in way that seems so unintelligent.

TBH, I think it has an air of understated elegance about it.

Rachiochi-san, since you are a student, you are still in the process of learning, aren't we all, but I think you should distinguish between an academic critque and a slagging-off of someone's hard work. Before Zelda: Wind Waker went out, a number of people were questioning the game's new cel-animination like graphics, but it all turned out all right in the end.

taking all comments into consideration i still think this animation is ugly, to matthew simkins i have seen enough sickening and awful animation to give up with being constructive in my criticism, and i think some of my tutors would agree with me, i dont care that u only had 3 weeks thats pretty much standard and all my tutors work in the industry come out with work thats a lot better then this.

This has only propelled me and my fellow students to fill the world with animation that is actually good, im not good at cgi but i have friends(students) who have created better animated pieces then this in a week. Im sorry but i find it have to be constructive when this piece of animation is so hideously ugly, seriously has anyone else on here seen any half decent animation to judge this piece against other work? rhetorical question as im presuming no.

Hi Guys... I made this video in 3 weeks, from scratch.

Day 1 was meeting Seth in the pub and day 21 was posting him the DVD!

I had such fun making it and I'm glad so many people

like it.

Seth's a mate of mine so I hope he can be honest with me!

He gave me a mention on local radion the other day

so I'm dead chuffed!

Well rachiochi the guy who did it got a first in his degree (I believe) and Seth Lakeman himself has said how much he likes it so I'm sure Matthew Simkins doesn't mind too much.

i love this song but seriously i have never been so disapointed, as an animation student i think i'd have a bit authority not wanting to sound pompous but this is just awful, its ugly and the animation is so static and this video does doesnt do justice to the song at all, seriously i think a more simple cel style animation would've suited the song better, sorry but thats my opinion.
