Learn instruments, and make your own music.. I couldnt sleep at night knowing Iv released a song with somebody elses loops in it.. A bit of creativity folks, break down the barrier that seems unbreakable.. Be original.
Let me make a suggestion: If you boost EQ all the time then everything fights with each other for space in a mix and it will sound cluttered and messy. Consider cutting each element instead in such a way that it leaves space for the other drums and instruments.
For example if you want the low end on a kick to stand out, cut away the LF from the other toms and the snare. This is way more effective than boosting. Peace.
Why don't the loop designers come out with a choice of the same construction kits, that are already eq'd and comped to perfection along with the raw ones?
THIS WOULD BE SOOOOO USEFUL FOR SONGWRITERS AND RECORDING ARTISTS WHO ARE NOT EXPERTS AT MIXING AND MASTERING...ALLOWING THEM TO CONCENTRATE ON THE CREATION AND ARTISTRY.
One thing I would say that this guy hasn't covered is try parallel compression (known as new york compression too) on your drums. Its quite easy, route the output of all your drums to a stereo aux track, then on your sends, send 100 % of this stereo aux to another stereo aux track. Then compress this 2nd aux track heavily! It will really thicken your drums up and help them to sound fatter! By the way this works great on recorded live drums and electronic drums too!
Just a tip. Look where your kick drum is peaking man! You are in 24 bit! You should be peaking at about minus 15 in 24 bit. With levels like that you are causing internal overload in a lot of plugins and if you had to go out to analogue to something yours would be off the scale. When mixing in 24 bit just try having your tracks peaking at about minus 15 and hear how much clearer your mixes sound.
This really tells no one anything. All of the settings shown specific for the sounds you used. For example your snare settings may sound terrible on another snare. A very large part of mixing rock is mixing a drum kit which is not covered at all as you are using pre-processed loops. The main reason attack controls were added to compressors is so slower attacks could be used for drums to allow the transients through so advising fast attack on kicks is bad. Also read up on gain structure in 24bit.
sorry uploader, but i just cannot respect the fact of yer using instrument loops. if anything u should be playing instrument tracks yerself or arranging individual one-shots via a sequencer. nuff said.
Buy a real drumkit, Buy mices and cables and a mixingdesk.
Use the eq and you're ready.
How can you even say how we should compress/gain a kick or snare.. every kick and snare have their own SPL and therefore you can't say how much the comp. or treshhold should be.
@Nagraath Yes it is lol. Rather, it isn't really recording. What do you think a mix engineer does when a producer gives him a track?! 'Oh I cant really mix this because its all been produced before I've imported it' ? Lol
@Nagraath Producing is not the same as mixing. That's why there are producers and there are mixers. I thought that was common knowledge. What he was doing there was explaining how he mixed that piece.
i mic each drum seperate and record onto a tascam 2488 as you can use 8 inputs at once (or you could use similar multitrack). then usb onto the pc and import audio files onto cubase sx onto sep' tracks you can then bounce/pan/eq/effects. also if u record with 1 condenser mic can bounce multiple tracks and slightly adjust each by msecs and pan/eq etc each track as if u used several mics. eg. if u r eq'ing a kick, knock all the highs out and use drumagog and blend the sound of the two together.
@pete509th You have to get a sound card or audio interface that allows you to record multiple tracks at once. I use a presonus firestudio. You can pick up this type of stuff at Guitar center or musician's friend.
i have a little doubt here, let's see...if you make a copy of a same signal from example; your original kick and a copy of that like this guy did on the video, shouldn';t that be causing phase problems , like cancelation on the phase because you are working the exact same signal?? could i try that only with the bass drums in case that this works for me ?? and still not having a problems even if i use diferent eq to make them sound diferent?
@ashebiara10 - if you adjust the bounced track by like mil sec (zoom right in and only slightly adjust!!) eq accordingly and it will work. works ok if you only record with 1 mic as a drum overhead and bounce the track, pan left and right. slightly adjust out of sync. not saying its ideal but is a solution if you can't get a matching pair of condenser mics. it makes it sound stereo and bigger which is the idea but technically it isn't a stereo recording. i have done this in the past myself.
i think you are on to something. I think Linkin park used that same freakin guitar loop! HA HA! And if they didn't. WOW, that even worse. God, they SUCK
@Adikumoro ...And that is how linkin park do their music^^ Seems like Mr. hahn is the core for creating their music :-P Or shoul I say the "processor core"
I think the kick actually has too much attack to it. It needs more bottom-end, IMO. It sounds rather lifeless without a little boom to it.
You probably like the sound of 311's drums, which I feel are too produced sounding. But then, I don't like hip-hop and like more of a 60s sound. Oh well...to each his own.
when compressing the overall drum group you didn't mention the attack time. mildly important. good tip about kick eq (add some top so it pokes through the mix)
i cant begin to thank you enough for this video... i have had pro tools for along time and my mixes just werent great, having done evrything you said my mixes sound just amazing.... I so so so so wish you could of just done some simple voclas and a simple maser...
i have a question, i use midi drums (ez drummer) and i cant tune the snare done?? is there away of getting around this??
I actually liked his mix. Didn't do everything he said, but the drums I recorded were lovely after these tips. Oh, of course, don't use loops!

This is shocking, you are using compression all wrong mate! EQ is for cutting mainly and only boosting one freq max. Dear me.

compressor after eq always... usually

unless you want to EQ the sound, since compression usually changes the tonal balance....in other words, just do what sounds good.
