  • I believe she would play a great Christine Daee.

    -H-

  • Beautifully done glamour shots in the murder scene. I watched this right after the same scenes by Olivero, Tebaldi, and Callas. I should say that Gheorghiu's version was more beautiful than those three. Other than beauty, I felt a little bit of anger from her, and that's all. From Olivero, Callas, and even Tebaldi, I felt more complex emotions like fear, guilt, desparation, etc. Gheorghiu's version is good if somebody wants to experience something simple and beautiful.

  • Best action scene in all opera. Die bad guy. I wish my girlfriend would kill my bad guys. Convert you friends to opera with Tosca, a woman not to be messed with. And of course, the music is the best.

  • When I listen to this music, everytime I realise that the only one that will live forever is the composer, great Puccini, whoever sings the roles... But of course the marvellous singing talent of Angela Gheorghiu can not be denied.

  • Very good but NOT Callas....

  • Like so many Puccini pieces superb music that could stand alone ..Symphonic ..

  • Die, you slimebag, die!

  • It sounds not Italian as she isn't. =)

  • @AmyLeeKaulitz yes but Romanian is very similar to Italian actually it comes from the Latin languages as even the name Romania comes from the name Roma. Romanians for the most part can speak Italian without any traces of foreign accent

  • best scarpia best raimondi forever

  • the great Roumanian soprano at her best and they don't come any better!! Also a great production

  • Angela Cherorghiu has finally come into her own! Her first recordings were very beautiful but they lacked 'her' persona. Now the added maturity has brought out the beauty of her voice.

  • 1:55-2:43 =Angela Gheorghiu sexiness

  • Tosca!!! Moahahahahaaa...

KO! Aaand the winner iiis... Floria Tosca! Lol!!

  • Here we can actually listen to many middle C's which are considered to be Soprano's lowest notes

  • grande angela!! è perfetta per questo ruolo...*-*

  • My top three modern sopranos. Thumbs up if you agree.

    Angela Gheorghui

    Diana Damru

    Jessye Norman

  • Thank you God for this beautiful voice.

  • Agree with those who find this funny. Oh, Gheorghiu! You had fun doing this glamor shoot, didn't you?

  • Oh mein Gott! der Hammer.

  • This is the funniest performance ever!

  • @DieSonneSinkt ahahahahaha, yes, georghiu is always funny!!! I remember a traviata in which she seems under LSD (finale I act)

  • I like this scene better than any of the arias. it's total badassery

  • Excellent..Has there been a better writer of soprano roles than Puccini..?? I admire Verdi,Rossini etc for their undoubted talent and virtuosity but most of their stuff leaves me cold.."

  • E' morto! Or gli perdono!

  • tosca is most certainly my favourite opera ever

  • 3:04 !!!

  • the best voice for tosca...

  • @Neanderthalgirl well sorry if i said something wrong...i like angela as tosca thats all...

  • @Neanderthalgirl Excuse, but exactly who are YOU to be talking to people so rudely? It just shows how stupid and ill educated you are if you have to resort to such language. I've seen your comments on other videos. You don't intemidate anybody, you just come across as an idiot. So if you have nothing sensible to say, just go away and don't say anything.

  • @horn0viola

50% of women are superfluous .... you're one of that. Apart from this you're no serious interlocutor ... you're too stupid!!

  • @Neanderthalgirl '50% of women are superfluous'? What are you talking about?.... Oh of course it's just your usual rubbish. And I'm obviously more intelligent than you are because I can make a comment about something I dislike without resorting to bad language and rudeness.

  • @victoriangoth13

you obviously haven't heard callas. she is hands down the best tosca that ever lived

  • Thank you for sharing this BEAUTIFUL VIDEO...love IT...OUSTANDING PEFORMANCE....VIVA ANGELA... I ENJOY this video everytime i watch it.

  • 2:27 is hilarious!

  • One of the best ever TOSCA'S I have ever seen in my life time. Callas was great in her time, now its Angela's time. Acting makes it more believable, so so glad they made this into a film. If history doesn't betray me, but I think the church was behind the politics of its day as it is today as well.

  • Uh... Acting??? Seriously? I don't mean to offend, but... that's not acting. That's heinous garbage. She's far to over the top with that face. I imagine it's hard going from stage, where everything is far away, to a camera where everything is just so close up. I don't think she does a good job of carrying this off here. Though, I bet it's more riveting in the opera house.

I will say, her Amelia in Simon Boccanegra a few years back at the Met was outstanding.

  • This is Opera, everything is meant to be over acted, so that the audience can understand the story even when they do not understand the language being sung.

  • @TiaunaElise I'm afraid tehre is good acting and excellent acting. She might be an excellent singer but she is not in the same league as an actress. An excellent actress will be look overacted because she must look natural.

  • @espinaca79 she "might" be a good singer?

  • @TiaunaElise nothing should ever be over acted... over emphasized and larger gestures, perhaps. This wasn't filmed for the stage though and that's the problem with it. They're two different mediums and she just looks silly.

  • I agree! I Love Angela!!! She is absolutely angelic!

  • @123pumpupjam Do you know where I could get this DVD? What year was it made? Is there a version avaliable in UK?

  • I just became sold on Angela for the first time. Magnificent!

  • The best interpretation I've seen! Never realized before that a woman stabbing a rapist is violation/penetration in reverse. Instead of being repulsed by her action Angela's Tosca actually relishes the moment (she seems even to be twisting the knife a bit), and screaming "SCARPIA!!" into his face. A great job of acting - she realizes she's done Rome a favor by killing this bastard. Wonderful! It also helps that Angela is quite beautiful to boot. BRAVO

Grazie PUCCINI!

  • there's no blood on the knife

  • @matthieusarah It came off on his coat when she pulled it out OR he was just a bloodless bastard.

  • Nice, but she not 'a Callas'!

  • Yes, She is.. and more Beautiful

(I love Callas, and Callas means great performance but doesen't a beautiful voice..)

  • This is a great opera. Angela is wonderful.

Opera is where a guy gets stabbed in the back, and instead of dying, he sings. ~Robert Benchley

  • I love that quote!

  • I am so glad that I got this film on DVD <3 I love Tosca and I love Raimondi! Of course, there's nothing better than listening to him interpreting Scarpia live!

  • In effetti, vuoi mettere quanto son meglio i Guns N' Roses di Puccini? Questa è proprio robaccia. Tutti a sentire Marilyn Manson!

  • io ne so ancor meno...ho ascoltato sempre, o quasi, musica lirica in vita mia...

  • She is terrific. No doubt. But (and please no dirty comments) she's only great because we all see Maria Callas inside of her. She is invoking the Muse of Maria Callas, it's Callas she's trying to be like! It almost feels as if she's not playing the character Tosca but Maria Callas performingTosca. I wish Zefelli had cast Gheorghiu for the Callas Forever movie! She plays Callas really well!

  • Well, she is similar to her, in some ways, but she is not totally imitating Callas in her interpretation. There are similar bits, but also bits which are quite different. Despite those facts, her voice is different to Callas'. Her vibrato (do you call it like that) is very different to the one Callas used. - At least, that's what I think. ^^

Come vi permettete!!!!!! Viva l'edizione De Sabata Gobbi Callas Di Stefano, ARTISTI VERI!!!!!!

  • You said it brother. I like blonds and brunettes, Pinot Noir and Merlot , 45 ACP and 9mm, and Chocolate and Vanilla

  • My dears, those who are fighting who between Maria Callas or Angela Gheroghiu is the best. It is like comparing Jane Austen with J. K. Rowling. Jane Austen has his own period of glory, J.K. Rowling his one. The same thing is with Angela and Maria. What it is important is the fact that both are glorious and both sing for us to forget about this world where everyone is perfect and judge the others because he/she is not like him. However, i love both this women and others. Have a good day!

  • Well said!

Art and music (interpretation) is not a competition... It's beyond.

And why choose at all? You actually don't need to... You can enjoy the multitude and artistic diversity.

How I look forward to seeing Angela tomorrow live in CPH...!

  • mr.Nightmare, you got even this page with your disgusting lynching every Diva who may compete with your beloved Callas! you're just YT's RAT !

  • how would you know? have you met her?

  • Oh that's a little bit disapponting: they didn't put Tosca's most famous gesture: crossing Sacrpia's arms on his chest and puttnig candles aside his head... silent actions expressing forgiveness... This scene was even used as the Opera wallpaper!

Very emotional and impressive anyway (even though we say "Scarpìa" in Italian, instead of "Scàrpia" ;))

  • This is Opera, good opera, but cannot stand near the interpetation of Maria Callas, which is no more Opera, but life lived at the highest level of consciousness.

  • Unfortunately, marrying Aristotle Onassis was a clear indication that she herself wasn't operating at the "highest level of consciousness."

  • Nice video

  • The Orchestration is just perfect, isn't this song used in the new Bond movie ?

  • actually, they use the Te Deum...one of scarpia's arias, with a really cool stage if i'm correct. I heard that the scene at the opera house was the most expensive for the film makers to shoot. You are correct that it is from the same opera though.

  • Ok, Gheorghiu is WAY too full of herself to be convincing. She's more of a diva than the character of Tosca warrants. She's obviously not suffering -- she's living it up.

  • The scene is dramatic, the Italians have talent when it comes to Opera.

  • considering they invented it, i would imagine so, lol

  • This scene is one of my favourite, and I love the crescendo from 1:40 and the sudden change, with such a beautiful orchestration !

  • Stupenda interpretazione, impeccabile dizione di Angela Gheorghiu. Bello bello bello

  • @Dalloway3 no.....BELLISSIMO!

  • Magnificent!!!. She is just the best soprano of our times.

  • True -- not forgetting Dawn Upshaw ;-)

  • sorry no comparison to the mighty Callas...even in black and white Callas was better.

  • Callas's acting was definitely better but Angela does this role a lot of justice :)

  • We all know Callas is legend,an immortal operatic icon, that she lived the character on stage like no other soprano.

But do you really think all opera lovers should accept her as "best ever",as the one&only soprano? That, for that matter, her position among all time greats is unquestionable?Dont think so,her voice lacks the beauty,in stark contrast to her overall performance.Gheorghiu is simply the best soprano we have today for the italian&french operas, and simply Callas isnt superior to her.

  • 3:03 gives me chills

    definitely my favourite opera piece.

  • The Orchestration from 5:19 give me chills also!

  • Unfortunately she is full of herself, thinks like a chicken, and has no respect for anybody. Yesterday in an interview at Romanian Tv when asked "what would have you told Callas if you'd have met her?" caressing her hair she answered "nothing more than to any other colleague". And further commented "what Callas drama are you talking about? We all have our problems". Not even the fact that Callas died at age 54 was a drama for Gheorghiu. No comment except for "shame on her!"

  • @AliciaDupres,whether or not she is full of herself cant be said with certainty after some interview on the TV.Alot of people, both the experts on opera on one side and total ignorants on other side are not being objective, often they are being Callas fanatics instead of fans. And if Gheorghiu conduct during that interview wasnt very polite-I can understand her: There are far too many questions asked to contemporary sopranos regarding Callas.Dont forget Callas demeanor was often awweful&vain

  • I have the complete DVD of this and I adore both her singing and acting of Tosca role! She looks and acts like a real Floria Tosca! She is incredibly convincing, and I don't think this is not a real operatic acting, it is! And hers IS A REAL TOSCA! Everyone has the right to express his own opinion, but this is mine! And of course, Raimondi is A REAL SCARPIA too! S to Alagna's Cavaradossi, his acting and looks are superb, but the role requires a bit heavier, dramatic voice.

  • Ma che bell'audio....

  • This seems to me more of a movie interpretation than Opera ?! Not beleivable and a bit too slow acting almost static - may be too modern for an old art form ?

NO, this is not it - I woudn't compare to Callas' sublime version with Gobb. This reminds me a bit of Fanny's acting in "Callas forever".

  • it is a movie!

  • i totally agree with you Walkure, Now opera is and old art that needs to be respect to the realm form. now to compare this movie to a live opera or to Callas is well impossible.. oh and one more point they are not singing live its a playback....

  • now this is just sublime....

  • What a gorgeous voice she has but I didn't like that they didn't stick to the original opera's direction. :)

  • I was looking to Zeffirelli's production of this, with Gobbi and Callas at the ROH just before, and now this!?

  • Rimondo made the motions of being stabbed before she landed the dagger!!!

  • better than Callas

  • she made it look so easy. most chicks don't have the guts to just up and shank some dude out of the blue like that (Callas made it more believable. her Tosca was much more nervous about the situation). Tosca was a singer, not a kill bill chick. oh well, that only made it more bad ass. good job angela.

  • She's no Callas but she'll do in a pinch. I give her 2.5 stars out of 5 stars.

  • Just because she's not Maria Callas???? You're wrong on doing that!

  • i give you 0 stars out of infinite

  • tosca, her favourite opera

  • Is it wrong to say this is my absolute favorite part of this opera? Stab him again, Tosca! Of course I would never resort to murder if I were in her place, but he was such a nasty individual...

  • Nice! Raimondi great as ever and Gheorghiu is the living proof that we lack really great soprano's nowadays. She cannot be compared with Freni or Callas. Nevertheless, nice. A 8 plus.

  • She is singing end acting greatly!!!!

  • she is a magnificent soprano, a good actres

then, she can project the drama of the opera.

    but I prefer maria callas.

  • powerfull just powerfull....

  • I absolutely love this. She's no Callas, but who cares! She is bloody fantastic

  • I thought this was pretty bland. And no amount of pretending to act (and close miking) can hide the fact that Gheorghiu is a lyric soprano who falls short of vocal heft for Tosca which requires at least a spinto voice to do it justice.

  • as far as i know...angela is a spinto...and as far as i am concerned...i really do like her tosca

  • breathtaking performence by angela. tosca never looked so good

  • I love this part!

  • Fantastic

she is the example of todays Tosca

  • die Scarpia, this is the kiss of Tosca

  • that's one gorgeous woman! not to mention an amazingly dramatic performance. her low notes at the end aren't nearly as good as Callas's were but then again most mezzos can't hit low notes the way Callas did.

  • She is Tosca. I agree with you!

  • Ditto!!

  • donde se puede comprar este DVD

where I can buy this DVD.

  • on eBay

  • it is the best performer in this opera ,angela gheorghiu is the best tosca, the emotion of see this opera whit angela gheorghiu is beautiful.

  • Long live Callas's Tosca !!!!

Angela has a great voice that she doesn t know how to use... For once look in the eyes of vitalius Scarpia and face your fears... for once don't turn your back on him... for once show us that you are afraid... show us that you are attracted to Scarpia and you fear to be unfaithful to your love Cavaradossi...

    for once !

  • That was Maria's version. Angela is an over person. She's s not afraid, she is hating him. That's why she's killing him so in cold blood!

  • But we're not talking about Ghiorghui. we're talking about a naive afraid and madly in love floria tosca. her love is about to die. she has signed a contract with the devil. she cannot fall into his trap. killing scarpia is a consequence.a sequence of rage and fear on her life on her integrity and most importantly her fear of not becoming the victim of the man who uses the vatican for his libertinage and betraying cavaradossi.

  • Come on! I am a big fan of Callas. But stop doing this to Angela. She is very good here. Not Callas, but she's on her place - great Tosca

  • i agree. I like Anghelina's version too because it's more like what a modern woman would be like in this situation

  • I agree with you, except that I really saw for a moment on Angela's face a certain fear before she brought herself to murder him. But the violent and desperate detest she demonstrated is marvellously and remarkably conveyed in this performance! She doesn't have to act exactly like Callas, she is a unique human being and it is all natural that she added something of her own vision of Tosca's personality.

  • ...what a great actor Raimondi is! How I wish to sing with him one day!

  • the best ever!! AND she is Romanian!

  • What about the bit just before this ,right after vissi d arte!!

  • And the moral to the story is; don't mess with Angela on a dinner date. Incredible. Thanks Alice.

  • Thank you!!!!!
