I'm not a fan of Merkel but that's wrong. If the candidate for German chancellorship goes to the US the only things he get is a photo with the President. No Videos! And definitly no videos in front of national symbols like the Statue of Liberty or the White House. And definitly no rallys there. He got the place in front of the Siegessäule which is an important monument, but not the sign of a national trauma like the Brandenburg Gate.

I live in Germany. The opposition party in Germany is totally in favor of having Obama speak at the Brandenburger Tor. And so are many other Germans. I am in favor of it because idiotic German comedians and soccer stars spoke-joked-stood there. It would have actually been an honor to have him speak there. But Frau Merkel said no, oh well.

It was not the opposition party, it was the SPD which is actually the governing party in the state of Berlin an the coalition party of Frau Merkel.

For the German government Obama can't be any more than a American senator with no merits for Germany whatsoever. So he can't expect to get any special treatment.
