Researchers have been able to recreate in the lab the environmental conditions that they believe existed early in the earth's history. I agree with SavedbyJaco that the music is really distracting and doesn't seem to fit. I want to use this section of the film in class, but the music really makes it hard to pay attention to what they're saying.
The religious true believer is by definition a damned fool. A fool because he holds unsupported belief in the supernatural superior to deliberate and honest reason, and damned because - if there is a God - then that entity would not have endowed species Homo sapiens with the power to reason in any expectation that man would not openly and honestly employ that ability instead of treating an antique fantasy as "science."
Well put Dr Steve. At least it gets people discussing this issue that really should be a non issue if not for the church. The lies of religion have always been for political gain. Jesus was a creation of Rome under Emperor Constantine by the Nicean Council in 365AD - he didn't even exist but popes, bishops, priests have perpetuated the lie and extorted money, created division, murdered and raped and defiled minors. Religion is evil and no friend of humanity. Scientific method is the way on.
Strong radical beliefs are hard to disprove. a normal human being would say that he'll agree with both...but that would not be enough for these two opposing parties. What is our stand as human beings, is it not living? If this debate continues it will only lead to death and hence disprove our stand.
I prefer the Jack Lemmon- George C. Scott version of the movie....this looks more comical...that's seems more serious and George C. Scott looks like the devil as Brady :-P
I don't get why those two bicker on, and just get along. You cannot replace religion with science, with that you replace morality and emotion. Without science, you make human beings lives a lot harder without technology. Both can be compatible with each other, yet both sides have no solid proof on their subjects. Unless you want to live in a communist society, go right ahead Equality 7-2521.
@StickEntertainment Although I agree with the spirit of your comment, that both religious and non-religious people can coexist peacefully, it's simply wrong to play the relativism card and suggest that neither of them have "solid proof on their subjects," when the fact is scientists go to great lengths to provide an abundance of testable evidence for their claims. If you want to be religious that's fine, but if you want to talk proof, then religion will lose against science every single time.
@ancalites I'm a Christian (though not a biblical literalist), and I agree with you. I'd only suggest that faith and science are very different. Each has its own parameters. Science, for example, assumes that natural law is absolute. A believing theist, on the other hand, might argue -- as Bryan/Brady does in this film -- that God can do what He wants with natural law, because He created it. Would love to continue this dialogue, if you'd like to as well:). Best, Steve
@stevevandien How can you claim to be a christian when Jesus was a fabrication of Rome for political purposes? You are sitting on the fence and providing fuel for the religious movement but no progession towards humanity getting beyond superstition. If you are in support of a deity creator provide evidence. If you have scientific evidence to present in quantum physics and the multiverse theorem please do otherwise accept the reality we exist in and let a philosophy based in science succeed.
Creationists are the very definition of ignorance and intolerance, they ignore the entire scientific body of evidence based on faith in a book that asserts that snakes talk to people, birds have four legs and angles speak to mules, and whales swallow people whole. And then base an entire belief on this same set of silly stories. Its very very sad

Abe Lincoln and Charles Darwin were born on the very same day. There's no point attempting to reason with creationists. They don't have the reasoning skills necessary to learn. It's like that classic: Don't try to teach a pig to fly. It won't work, wastes your time, and only irritates the pig.

Please get your facts right before you start spewing them. The Psalms are a collection of poetry written over four hundred years and compiled in the 3rd Century BCE. About 330 years before Christ was crucified.
@phoenix11861 There is no need for name calling. What Bible are you using? The Psalms are a part of the Hebrew Bible or what is referred to as The Old Testament in Christianity (including Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant). The Hebrew Bible is split up into three parts: the Torah, the Nevi'im, and the Ketuvim. The Psalms fit into the Ketuvim which in English means Writings and includes the poetic books and wisdom writing. Furthermore, Judaism includes the Psalms in their Hebrew Bible (no NT).
Please get your facts right before you start spewing them. The Psalms are a collection of poetry written over four hundred years and compiled in the 3rd Century BCE. About 330 years before Christ was crucified.
@ElliottzMom That's not at all true. I used to be a Creationist, if it wasn't for intelligent people debating against me and informing me about how Evolution actually works I'd probably still be stuck a Creationist. Thank goodness not everyone who accepts Evolution is as stupid as you.
@TitenSxull There is some truth to it, though. There are some people that say they won't be convinced. Then there are others, such as yourself, that keep an open mind, look at both sides, then decide what makes more sense. Props to you for your open mind :) but many Creationists are closed-minded and outwardly say that Evolutionists are wrong, hence cases like this one. This book was more focused on the fundamental right to think for oneself, using this issue as an example.
@SuaveTito Sure there are closed minded folks but many of them are just stubborn. I was that way for a time but eventually the truth does sink in and cut through the BS that we are taught. That's why it is important for people to try to teach Creationists even if it seems fruitless at first.
@TitenSxull Hey, I'm on your side :D What's right usually comes through if you chip away at the opposing reasoning. The burden of proof has always been on evolution prove itself right; cognitive dissonance does the rest. I think it's about time we switch the burden of proof to the other side, since Evolution has more logic around it. The most outspoken Creationist believe the great flood caused the Grand Canyon. Science says that can't happen; he should have to prove his stance.
@SuaveTito That's actually a really good idea. Creationism would have trouble meeting its burden of proof because most things touted as "proof" of Creationism are just strawmen of Evolution or ignorant viewpoints of geology, fossils, etc. Plus the fact that Creationists must, at some point, invoke a supernatural explanation would leave them essentially dead in the water from a scientific stand point.
I've actually spent the past two years with a youth group that does mission work and stuff, and on the mission trips they say the stories in the Bible (like Genesis) are truth. I don't myself agree with that, but I do respect their right to believe what they want, which again is what this book focused on. Definitely though, if one is going to speak out against Evolution in favor of "Intelligent Design", they should come prepared to prove it.
@ElliottzMom Would you all, this one included, just shut up? This movie is about censorship and the sanctity of a man's right to think, not whether evolution is fact or religion is evil. The ultimate insult to this movie is that so few of you, on both sides, understand that.
Evolution sucks, nothing in the text books is right, all that crap has been proven wrong many hlyears ago, like they say "hey, the embreo has gill slits" "Uhm, that was proven wrong about 100 years ago. Why are lieing to kids these days," If a math text book said 2+2=5 would you change it? Problay, so rip out the wrong pages in the textbooks. Jeez?
I definitely agree with you. We should be throwing out those wrong theories and unprovable claims.
I mean, if the entire scientific concensus has shown through countless studying, testing, and research on how true everything Darwin's theories are, well, that is definitely not worthy enough of a test for inclussion in our school textbooks!
We need a real test. Perhaps, a divine test, eh? We should be asking what our intelligent designer must think.
The performances by Tracy and March in this film are portentous. Nothing short of astounding. Even though both actors were at the twilight of their lives their powers were still at their peak.
Then explain how the flood explains the existence of fossils, who's age surpasses that of the flood's. And just because scientists can be christian doesn't mean they don't accept evolution you dumbass. Even chrisitians who aren't scientists accwept evolution (ie. archbishop of canterburry)
How are fossils evidence for creationism? Also, don't bring in those stupid creationist terms. Evolution is evolution, there is no micro or macro, that's just a bunch of silly nonsense you guys try to make up to dodge the truth. Evolution is as much a fact as gravity or the earth being round, you just have to accept it. If you don't believe me, go ask an actual scientist who studies this stuyff, UNLIKE you.
You seem to think the physical world means the present world? Do fossils not have anything to offer for evolution? Well, if they don't, lets look at bacterium and viruses. Why do you think there's a constant need to create new antibiotics and vaccines? When you hear that viruses become immune to vaccines, what do you think? They EVOLVE to become resistent. Fruit flies have also been observed to evolve. Evolution is a fact, the mechanics are theory.
We don't have to WITNESS evolution. We have the EVIDENCE FOR IT! Fossils, bones, DNA!!! All of it is evolutionary!! The human race dates back millions of years! That is a incontrovertible FACT!
Why do you put this annoying background music to this terrific scene???
William Jennings Bryan was an ignorant man. Ignorant of all science. Putting your faith in the bible is tantamount to playing dumb for the rest of your life.
William Jennings Bryan failed at the Scopes Trial simply because he didn't know the reasonable answers that creation scientists and apologists have today, not because he was ignorant, rude, or angry. The argument is not over, and please don't use that "failure" back then as an excuse to NOT listen to the Creation side after all, especially if you're going to be continuously and maliciously thirsty for answers, which HAVE diligently been answered for you, for YEARS.
Here's a question-- do you seriously, honestly think that Creationism wields more benefits (solid, discernible benefits, not religious ones) if we believe it rather than Evolution?
Also, if these questions have been answered why do you suppose Creationism is only rampant to those people who want to believe it, and not the scientists who matter?
I'm sorry, but this movie is an absolute PERVERSION of what really took place. In REALITY, things were quite the OPPOSITE from this film. The creationist (Bryan) had a kind character, & the evolutionist (Darrow) had a mean look. But in this movie, the CREATIONIST has the mean look while the evolutionist has the kind character. I dont understand why the present world enjoys twisted & distorting events to support their arguments.
This movie is annually shown at secular schools & colleges, to make students think that Christians are dumb & not trustworthy. That's not education, that's INDOCTRINATION, Soviet-style!
No. We have plenty of truth. It's called evolution. It's a known FACT. On the other hand, all you have is faith which has no science WHATSOEVER to back it up. YOU choose to lead your life with eyes and mind closed.
The word theory in scientific terms is VERY different to the term theory you appear to be thinking of. The earth being round is called a theory too y'know, so is the idea of the earth revolving around the sun. Would you call those 'just theories' too? You dont understand the terminology you are using, evolution is as much a fact as the earth being round or Newtons laws of motion. Why pick out evolution and ignore the others? There is just as much evidence for evolution..
@SavedbyJaco It doesn't fit the movie at all. This scene is meant to be shocking and dramatic, but the music almost mellows it. It's nice music, and almost uplifting at the thought of the glory of science, but it doesn't fit.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
for those that call this junk a "good movie", perhaps should pop your brains outta sand and get the real facts. Evolution makes you dumb. Learn to r e a d.
"Christians were portrayed as dishonest and hypocritical, or as ignorant yokels who deny the truth of progress occuring all around them, preferring to remain attached to quaint old traditions."
Most accurate description of the Christian Right today that I have ever heard.....Thanks
The message in the film was clear: To portray those who accept evolution as being progressive truth-seekers, unshackled by false old religious ideas, and full of common sense. But Christians were portrayed as dishonest and hypocritical, or as ignorant yokels who deny the truth of progress occuring all around them, preferring to remain attached to quaint old traditions
The idea that one race, and in particular the white race, and especially the Nordic/Aryan/Teutonic/German sector, is superior to all others is total fallacy. But it was enthusiastically taught in American classrooms by Hunters Civic Biology, the textbook at the centre of the Scopes trial in 1925.
will someone PLEASE post the pre trial scene between tracy, kelley and york.
its like walking down an empty street listening to your own footsteps, but all you have to do is knock on any door and say if you let me in, i'll live the way you want me to live and i'll think the way you want me to think, and all the blinds will go up and all the doors will open and you'll never be lonely... ever again.

Why do you put this annoying background music to this terrific scene???
William Jennings Bryan was an ignorant man. Ignorant of all science. Putting your faith in the bible is tantamount to playing dumb for the rest of your life.
cutis1000 2 years ago
William Jennings Bryan failed at the Scopes Trial simply because he didn't know the reasonable answers that creation scientists and apologists have today, not because he was ignorant, rude, or angry. The argument is not over, and please don't use that "failure" back then as an excuse to NOT listen to the Creation side after all, especially if you're going to be continuously and maliciously thirsty for answers, which HAVE diligently been answered for you, for YEARS.
Eye2EyeIIIV 2 years ago

Eye2EyeIIIV 2 years ago
@Eye2EyeIIIV - Sorry, but you are dumb and not trustworthy if you believe the Bible to be true.
cutis1000 2 years ago
@cutis1000
Once again, you are saying things without proof. Not to mention that you use all of your swears out of context.
Eye2EyeIIIV 2 years ago
No. We have plenty of truth. It's called evolution. It's a known FACT. On the other hand, all you have is faith which has no science WHATSOEVER to back it up. YOU choose to lead your life with eyes and mind closed.
cutis1000 2 years ago
Actually, evolution (according to Darwin) is still called a theory.
dakotagerman1 2 years ago
Evolution is no longer a theory. It is a FACT!
cutis1000 2 years ago
Then why is it still called a "theory"?
Darwin's theory is just as much blind faith as the Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson-type fundamentalist "creationism".
I, for one, accept neither because there is NO PROOF, to my satisfaction, to substantiate either claim.
dakotagerman1 2 years ago
The word theory in scientific terms is VERY different to the term theory you appear to be thinking of. The earth being round is called a theory too y'know, so is the idea of the earth revolving around the sun. Would you call those 'just theories' too? You dont understand the terminology you are using, evolution is as much a fact as the earth being round or Newtons laws of motion. Why pick out evolution and ignore the others? There is just as much evidence for evolution..

True! You should have also mentioned that gravity is a theory too. :)

goddamit dude the music DOES NOT FIT and I have trouble hearing what's going on because of that shit
SavedbyJaco 2 years ago 45
@SavedbyJaco I agree. The scene is very powerful, but the music diminishes it.
stevevandien 1 year ago
@SavedbyJaco It doesn't fit the movie at all. This scene is meant to be shocking and dramatic, but the music almost mellows it. It's nice music, and almost uplifting at the thought of the glory of science, but it doesn't fit.

i dont think it was pro evolution as much as it was for explaining that people should be allowed to think/believe what they want.

This comment has received too many negative votes show

"Christians were portrayed as dishonest and hypocritical, or as ignorant yokels who deny the truth of progress occuring all around them, preferring to remain attached to quaint old traditions."
Most accurate description of the Christian Right today that I have ever heard.....Thanks
Nihm420 2 years ago 2
The message in the film was clear: To portray those who accept evolution as being progressive truth-seekers, unshackled by false old religious ideas, and full of common sense. But Christians were portrayed as dishonest and hypocritical, or as ignorant yokels who deny the truth of progress occuring all around them, preferring to remain attached to quaint old traditions

The idea that one race, and in particular the white race, and especially the Nordic/Aryan/Teutonic/German sector, is superior to all others is total fallacy. But it was enthusiastically taught in American classrooms by Hunters Civic Biology, the textbook at the centre of the Scopes trial in 1925.

what's the point of the music. i read this play and i loved it.
wellwillhey 2 years ago
Why the music? To prove you're part of the film creators.
Ridiculous!
Parvati78100 2 years ago
What was the point of the background music? It adds nothing to court room scene and is a distraction.
Grisostomo06 2 years ago
Hey the Judge is being played by Colonel Potter from MASH!!!!

take out the background music, it distrubs.

The performance and the music would have been better separate.
However, good overall

will someone PLEASE post the pre trial scene between tracy, kelley and york.
its like walking down an empty street listening to your own footsteps, but all you have to do is knock on any door and say if you let me in, i'll live the way you want me to live and i'll think the way you want me to think, and all the blinds will go up and all the doors will open and you'll never be lonely... ever again.
