It is so wonderful that we have Youtube to document the legendary Diana Ross' career from the beginning to now. What a awesome journey she has had. I love her so.
I've loved this song since the first time I heard it back in '91 when I bought Diana's "Force Behind the Power" CD. I wasn't aware Babra Streisand had ever recorded it and never even heard it until now on youtube. It could be that I've gotten used to Diana's version, but some of Barbra's roars w/ this song frightened me.
@lassley BTW, I am also a big fan of Barbra Streisand, both as an actress and a singer. I just don't think this song was one of Streisand's best. Not that it is necessarily one of Diana's timeless classics either, but hearing Diana's storytelling approach in covering this song is so much more heartfelt than how Barbra's repetitive whalings made the song seem like it was made for "Hello, Dolly."
I like the way Micheal Jackson is wearing the glasses in the beginning of this video and then takes them off. I didn't know MJ recorded this song. he never does this song in his shows.
Ok I just listened to both of them too Barbras sounds like Broadway - I can't see them playing Babs on black radio Quiet Storm etc. Diana Ross' has a sexier across the board appeal black, pop, soft sophisticated rock and international soul, her interpretation is best. Streisand is legendary she kind of sings like Mary Poppins.
Diana Ross and Barbra Streisand can sing the same songs they are kind of similar however their styles and interpretations are different. Streisand voice is not so much bigger but rather more theatrical, Ross thing has always been sophisticated and smooth but w/ a soulful funky edge. They are both strong and great at what they do! No real comparison.
Compared to Barbra's version, U could almost say that this is a calculated, non-melodic, almost new age version of this love song! Is this theatre or heart felt music? I'm lost! I think Di is great, but this is hollow and try hard compared to the free spirit of Barbra's Heart felt interpretation.
I guess diff. between u and me is I'm a Sap, and the sentement of these lyrics MAY reflect theatrical OR heartfelt emotions. That is what us Bab fans like. Her theatrical feelings (as I pressume U see it) is what true Babs fans love. We feel and hear her heart , as if she were in a movie or theatre production, not just the average singer jerking her hips in a vid. I recgnise Babs as an actress with the ability to truely express and display empathy.
Honest, I'm a sap too, that's why I love Diana. But Diana doesn't have the pipes that Babs does. I think that is why you like Babs version better. Diana can't over sell a song.. It usually is a straight narration from her.. Now I won't touch on Babs the actress which I think falls way short of Babs the singer.. but that's just the way I see it...
Why compare Diana to Barbra? Just because you have a big set of pipes, that doesnt mean you are any more talented! Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, Chaka Khan and Gladys Knight have bigger pipes than Barbra, does that mean they are anymore talented than her????
No one was comparing Diana to Babs, what was stated was the obvious. Babs has bigger pipes than Diana, which in turn means that she can over sell a song. That's if you want the song over sold, sometimes singing along with the melody is the better approach.. get it?
Excellent point @ andydiana .. I don't understand why people think that vocal gymnastics ranks you as a better singer. Barbra Steisand can sing and So can Diana Ross. Many Soul mommas have bigger vocal sounds than Ross and Streisand but they don't have bigger careers. Everybody does not like the same kind of singing
@konumers I realize that you are a fan. But it's unfair for you to say Diana Ross cant sell a song vocally that she is straight narration - That's just not true! She sold records because of how she sings! Many people would rather hear Diana Ross Singing Style oppose to Patti Labelles , Just like many would rather her Carrie Underwood oppose to Jasmine Sullivan its called Preference not narratives
political, you need to re-read what I posted. I didn't say Diana can't sell a song vocally, her many #1 hits proves that she can. What I said was she can't "over-sell" a song, which means hitting big notes and vocal gymnastics as Luther use to call it. Listen, I rather listen to a voice like Diana's over someone like Patti any day of the week.
This is one of my all time favorites from Diana. When she does songs like this with great big deep feelings, only she can do it so well. She sounds amazing on this, and wow doesn't she look kewl. Love you Diane, viva la Diana.
i really love this song co'z this song gave me a right decision to decide..this song always making me strong everythime i listen to it..tnx to diana ross!!
