Mariah is the queen of all divas.Celine can just belt,nothing else.Mariah outbelt her effortless and give so many other impressive vocal things.Mariah's voice is all about riffs,melismas,runs,soft notes,low notes,whistle register notes,powerful notes,etc. Celine is just about belting.So,Mariah is way better !
Today's Mariah POWERFUL belts??? u deaf? Mariah today lives with whispering, ok runs and whistle everything else is gone. Celine belts still unbelievable notes both chest and head. She sings with emotion, power and huge technical skills. As i said, prime time was neck to neck but TODAY Celine wins.

Love the vid. I gotta say Celine wins me over, cos she managed to preserve her voice all through the years. Mariah has lost a lot of the gusto of hers. Both lip-sync once in a while, but MC does it shamelessly a lot more. And, Celine doesn't show off with melisma or belts like MC, even though she can. So i love Celine.
@arson1000 exactly! both have incredible technique, they just have different sounds and styles... they colour their notes in their own way, one is very keen on pure tones the other more rock. and as for being legendary, i can't imagine not including both in the list: the 90s wouldn't be complete without celine or mariah. for the people who hate on celine, think titanic and that song, and she's sold more albums than any female artist ever (including mariah)- that's not something to scoff at.

But when she hits a high chest note, her voice over powerates the music making it unpleasant to hear. but when mariah raises her alto voice, it becomes more dramatic and it sounds very powerful. and Celine does not posess any talent in using the whistle register...

Can someone tell me how Mariah got nodules? I never understood why exactly. Some say from exploring her whistle register when she was young, but me being not so musically or vocally intelligent I don't know what to believe. And what kind of changes did she go through in the late 90s that affected her voice so much?
@aftertonight13 Mariah has had nodules since she was about 3.MC kept waking up and her voice was really scratchy and high,and her mother didn't know why,so she took her to the doctor and found out MC had nods.So therefore throughout years of pushing her voice it changed and kinda declined in the late 90's around 97
Though MC's vocal conditions fluctuates,so it isn't forever truly damaged.As of currently her voice is almost back to Music Box era,mid belt wise.U heard her new Xmas album? amazing..

People need to understand they are two totally different singers that appeal to tow totally different audiences. If you were going for a better "book" singer. It would be Celine, but if you were judging from a church, soulful standpoint it would be Mariah. However Celine's voice does not sound nearly as effected as Mariah's does ,because her voice is more classical and her technique is more "book". And nasal is an opinion. Mariah also sounds Nasal at times.

@avataranime101 Well,take into account a few things. Celine is French ,and to speak French ,you use your nasal passages to resonate the proper sound. This explaining her nasal quality. I love MC dearly , but her techniques are not often "proper" so to speak. Mariah has (especially lately) displayed nasal flaws in transitions,and in her higher belting. (i.e. love story). This debate only boils down to taste in music; because both of them have strengths and weaknesses in different areas.
@tireh Celine is Canadian,but yes she does speak French in her native tongue.Still true singers should belt from the chest,some resonate more in the mask like Whitney. Though i still don't hear what you are hearing. Even present day there is nothing nasally about MC's voice.Her transitions from register to register is still very fluidly and smooth.
For someone who has had nodules for almost her entire life,and then went through so many vocal changes,MC has preserved the voice very well.

i love celine and she is a great singer but she's not even on mariah's level. mariah's on this level of legendary singers like whitney, aretha, barbra, patti, yolanda, mahalia, and ella who have incredible musicianship, creativity, and uniqueness. celine's more of a second-tier singer like christina, jennifer holliday, jennifer hudson, cece, chaka, nina, kelly clarkson, lea michelle, janis, teena, and mary j. they're all unbelievably talented but they can't touch the legends.

Both are good. both have powerful voices. Celine is a soprano, Mariah is an alto. Celine's voice is good. But when she hits a high chest note, her voice over powerates the music making it unpleasant to hear. but when mariah raises her alto voice, it becomes more dramatic and it sounds very powerful. and Celine does not posess any talent in using the whistle register...

Can someone tell me how Mariah got nodules? I never understood why exactly. Some say from exploring her whistle register when she was young, but me being not so musically or vocally intelligent I don't know what to believe. And what kind of changes did she go through in the late 90s that affected her voice so much?

@aftertonight13 Mariah has had nodules since she was about 3.MC kept waking up and her voice was really scratchy and high,and her mother didn't know why,so she took her to the doctor and found out MC had nods.So therefore throughout years of pushing her voice it changed and kinda declined in the late 90's around 97
Though MC's vocal conditions fluctuates,so it isn't forever truly damaged.As of currently her voice is almost back to Music Box era,mid belt wise.U heard her new Xmas album? amazing..

So no it wasn't the whistle.To be honest Whistle register is one of the lightest part of your voice,so much damage shouldn't be done if used properly

I prefer Mariah's voice. I love the sound of her voice. To me her voice is smoother. I love her low notes, they sound so smooth, and I love it when she whispers. I love her powerful voice, but most of all, I love her whistles! I love to listen to singers who have whistle registers, and Celine does not have that. Celine is good, but Mariah just does it for me!

Celine has a very powerful voice,but the higher she gets the more nasally it gets.Though what i like about Celine voice is that it has a very dramatic tone.In terms of power they are about equal,but Mariah is more resonant.
We all know who has more range.As far as techniques go Mariah has the superior technical skills,because she can flow and move in and out of notes, switch register swiftly.MC had nods for years,and she has sang around them and her voice still sound spectacular.

Power is generally a combination of resonance and pure volume and/or loudness.

I'm not saying that volume is unimportant, but if it was the same as vocal power, then loud, thin voices would be the most powerful.

Both are considered "power houses"though while Mariah is more resonant over Christina versus Xtina is just plain loud,which in that case she isn't a true powerhouse vocalist simply because she basically just yells and shouts,while Mariah actually belts and flows on.
Mariah is chesty,Xtina throaty,Celine Nasally.Then there are some who seem to be able to change there placement on a whim and vocal sounds can vary from the said person

People need to understand they are two totally different singers that appeal to tow totally different audiences. If you were going for a better "book" singer. It would be Celine, but if you were judging from a church, soulful standpoint it would be Mariah. However Celine's voice does not sound nearly as effected as Mariah's does ,because her voice is more classical and her technique is more "book". And nasal is an opinion. Mariah also sounds Nasal at times.

@avataranime101 Well,take into account a few things. Celine is French ,and to speak French ,you use your nasal passages to resonate the proper sound. This explaining her nasal quality. I love MC dearly , but her techniques are not often "proper" so to speak. Mariah has (especially lately) displayed nasal flaws in transitions,and in her higher belting. (i.e. love story). This debate only boils down to taste in music; because both of them have strengths and weaknesses in different areas.

Though i still don't hear what you are hearing. Even present day there is nothing nasally about MC's voice.Her transitions from register to register is still very fluidly and smooth.
For someone who has had nodules for almost her entire life,and then went through so many vocal changes,MC has preserved the voice very well.
