Episode 5, about almost halfway in Shinigami- sama is describing what happens when the resonance of souls goes on and how it amplifies the strength of the souls. To give a visual he used an example of somebody playing the guitar vs. somebody playing the guitar with an amp. the "somebody" shown as an example was maka.
