@PhillipPark90 First of all, by perpendicular line, I didn't refer to perpendicular to the mudslide. I meant that mudslides happen on the steepest slopes on a mountain, close to a perpendicular with the Earth's horizontal. They aren't in a steep slope, which puts them out of danger.

From their view point, one can tell that they are clearly not in a perpendicular slope and not even close to the mudslide radius. Besides, once a mudslide starts and passes you, it doesn't restart back up. And you just said they weren't powerless, meaning you just contradicted yourself...

heres a tip on avoiding and preventing disasters like this and its rather cheap planting trees makes the soil more stable and also prevents floods, build on a dry point site in other words a place that would never get flooded, build places that is not below sea level like new orleans, build far back from the shore to prevent storm surges would normally reach, better met office and warnings, don't build on or near a fault line, get volcanologists to watch for
