he is not lazy in piaffe, it's the way he is trained. why don't you watch his legs throughout the hole thing-his back legs-you will notice they seem very "lazy" indeed..this is not the fault of the horse, he has been bred to have very active movement, it is the fault of the rider and the rider method of training, courtesy of no less than Anky herself.
I don't know what vid you were watching, but his piaffe is fine. He's very correct, his canter piruettes were fantastic as were his extensions. A judge looks at how well the horse responds to the rider, and if they stay relaxed during each movement. and this horse was even during piaffe, which is really hard to do. Don't compare horses, it makes you close-minded.

Gribaldi is beautiful, he is amazing and he has been, in my opinion, badly trained. Not badly trained as in he doesn't know how to turn, stop or go (obviously) just the method used to get him to throw his knees around and do nothing behind. To me, that is bad training.
Mixed feelings about this: I'm usually brought to tears watching the brilliance of a great dressage horse, such as Blue Hors Matine, but I welled up when this horse was released into the walk! Not sure why, but maybe because this horse looks at times overflexed? I'm not sure what to think.
I think you're absolutely right. What we see here is an eminent horse that is poorly trained. His frame (the overflexed neck broken off at the 2. and 3. vertebrae) is representing modern dressage - and has nothing to do with the old classical dressage principles. Sdslancs - Thank you so much for your nice comment! And it's quite hard to keep track of all the comments here on Youtube, I agree! By the way I'm now working with a new horse, a Danish Warmblood gelding, he's not very far in his dressage education, but he's a very interesting project for me :o) Take care.
It's such a pity Gribaldi was ridden this way, imagine what he could've done had he had a Master riding him, he is such a beautiful horse, but so terribly trained. I would have loved to see the kind of piaffe/passage...well any of he really, he could've produced had he been truely collected
Why do you say he is terribly trained? He looks great to me. I just met his owner this past weekend in LA, I think they have done a great job with him.
A horse may be able to be ridden through the motions of these movements, but that is a far cry from riding them correctly, with collection and harmony. The ones ridden 'through the movements' are always ridden front to back instead of back to front, with their hinds trailing and therefore lacking engagement and lightness, softness, etc. of true collection.
"And just for the record, flashy knee actions IS everything!"
WOW.
You should really get out of horses and into like, sports cars or something. You have no love for the ART of dressage, you only care how flashy it is. You don't mind abusive training, as long as it produces RESULTS. Why not ride Saddleseat? They sore and torture their horses, but it makes them move really big and pretty and win ribbons.
Actually scratch that, you should not be involved, with horses at all. Please.
I totally agree with what Germaination is saying but i am sure that it is agreed that gribaldi and edward gal are not the worst examples of the "grand prix" riding that we see in todays dressage. Look at Anky, she is so incorrect that i personally find it painfull to watch her videos of riding. The horses in todays dressage world to me look like a mix between the arab and hunter jumper riding. If you want to see real dressage then watch a Spanish Riding School video.
No they're not. Edward I believe is a more sypathetic rider than anky ever will be. He is more correct, but I think Gribaldi is example of what hyperflexion and what it creates, and incorrect horse with no true collection and inactivity in the hind end, not to mention thats he mysteriously went lame a while back.
Obviously they do. As beautiful as Gribaldi is, he is not correct. Salinero is the same. Take his piaffe for example. Very flashy, very elevated, but yet he does not sit. There is very little or no flexion of the hind legs. It is nice to look at but not correct. And in that video of yours, she barely hyperflex's the horse. Which is a good move PR wise considering the controversy surrounding the technique. LDR= Low, Deep, Round. There is no evidence of this. Do you even know what...
Germaination.. you sound like you know what you are doing. You know the way Gribaldi drops his poll? I have a trekky who does the same thing and has started advanced. Any tips about the poll dropping crap? This happens especially in canter half pass and Im trying like hell, but with the poll up, it feels like his hocks are in the next county? Would appreciate advice, if you have any!!
one thing we do with one of our horses because he drops to far behind the vertical is to let your reins be longer and not to poll on the horses head. I'm not an expert horsewoman so if this doesn't help I'm just trying out some of my knowledge. Hope it will help a little... ;-)
whats the contact like when he does this? does he drop the contact too? try letting your hand follow the bit down and ask him to stretch down into the hand. apply some pressue with the leg while you do so to push him towards the contact. Gradually introduce changes within the pace ie in trot lengthened stride back to working, lengthen again or collected into medium. pretty much the moment you feel him come back when asking for the downward transition push him immediately forward again..
and once more into the contact. basically you are trying to encourage him to take the contact forward and down,as it sounds as though he is avoiding it. you can use this exercise within paces, between paces, depending on how advanced you are in you schooling and gradually you should find that he will begin to sit himself and comeup of his own accord as he becomes strong enough to do so. remember that you always want to feel that the horse is "searching"for the bit ie moving forward towards the..
Contact is still good when he does it. His mouth doesn't change; just that sneaky break behind the poll appears. I warm up with his head to the ground (but I dont use any gogs or gadgets; that stuff would have him doing a permanent rollkur!)Changes in pace - he is really active & sensative for these and I do allot of it, but I have to keep telling him 'up' with the poll. I will try on the downward trans to give a little forward aid the moment he slows
my god are you bloody blind? there are so many ways a horse can perform grand prix and he doesn't have to do it with collection and engagement though he should. he barely even tracks up! in piaffe/passage there is no bringing the hindleg forward towards the centre of gravity, he is all "out behind" like a 6 year old training grand prix. and if i've got rocks in my head, they seem to be pretty intelligent rocks. grow up.
No you grow up. Girly when you have ridden a horse at GP please show how much enagement you have. A horse can simply not be ridden at GP without collection. You have rocks in your head for sure.
boy-o, girl-o, what ever the fuck you re-o, I have ridden and trained GP and competed advenced? do you think I know wht I do by just reading books? I said he LACKS engagement. get some bloody glasses, read it properly and then get back to me. Or rather, take your pointless argument else where and find a poor soul as demented as you who gives a bugger about what you think you know and bitch to them.
Germination - No i will not stop bitching. Who are you to critisize these people? You need to get it right because a horse that 'Lacks in engagement" does not win! Get it right!
"a horse can simply not be ridden at GP without collection".
Have you ever been to a crappy dressage show? THEY SURE CAN!!! (get through the movements without collection, that is, for your clarification.)
Yes, Jackko, there IS such a thing as "fake dressage", or you may have heard the term, "circus dressage". I'm quite sure that you practice it religiously, in fact.
If you can't recognize that, then you have no business in dressage.
You spend a ton of time on youtube. Haven't you ever watched a terrible piaffe that has absolutely no lowering of the hindquarters, no hind joint articulation, no impulsion?
I could teach one of my training level ponies to do a psuedo piaffe in a couple of days. It doesn't mean he's collected or has any hindquarter strength.
To piaffe WELL, he needs to sit on his hindquarters, and that will take years.
I dont think you understand where i am comming from. If a horse can do a piaffe that is clear 2 beat without any rythmic problems, then the horse is collected. Sorry if you dont understand that but you really need to get your head around the fact that a horse performing any of those GP movemets is indeed collected. And just for the record, flashy knee actions IS everything! Competition dressage is the best, and if a horse doesnt make me want to look at it more than once then its not good enough.
Jaccko14 - maybe you should do some research as to what dressage actually is. It's called horse ballet for a reason - and do you think all that ballet dancers care about is how flashy they are? I don't think so. Learn about real dressage, and real collection, and then start commenting.
Maybe you should mind your own business and let it go you are not going to change my mind so whatever you say i dont care. Its about being flash, thats what dressage is about and thats what its becoming more and more, and im glad, because classical is so boring. Dressage should be fun and exciting, and thats what flash hot horses and modern riders have brought to the sport. Its great.
Jackko, you're an idiot. Theres no such thing as your beloved "competition" dressage. There is classical and modern dressage. Flashy knee action is NOT everything, especially if a horse cannot correctly perform the movement (and it sure doesn't come in handy for something like the halt that your precious Anky can't seem to get her horses to do as much as they should, which BTW is a movement). These horses have been carefully and selectively bred for generations to move..
well and be conformed in a way that they find collection easy. They shouldn't need help in the form of effectively strapping their noses to their chests to create "flashy" knee action and doing so simply defeat the purpose of breeding them to be uphill because is puts a lot of pressure on the forehand and stops them from being truly collected anyway. Your poor mother should ban you from the computer (and from watching those tacky DVDs)
It is his choice if he doesnt want to wear a helmet, he is a fantastic rider and probably trusts his horse very much. A lot of riders dont wear a helmet and that is OK, my instructor doesnt wear a helmet (when he jumps he does though) and he can stay on a bucking bronco horse and could easily fall off. But that is their choice and we cannot change that. I always wear a helmet and i think everyone should but if they dont then its not out problem if they hurt themselves.
You cannot tell me that both men and women do not get some sexual gratification from riding horses in tight riding pants. Just look at this persons pelvis rocking with this horses motion. The movements have to give the rider some sort of gratification. Why else would anyone ride a smelly stupid horsie? It has to feel good! Right?
Oh my! A man in tights! Riding a dressage horse! Wow! I wish to ask a question here. How come we only see women riding horses in dressage? When men ride in tights, do they get satisfaction from the movement in the saddle, wearing those thin tight breeches? Do women have the same satisfaction? I am just curious. Why more women ride in tights than men? Is it erotic pleasure that women have that men seek? It just looks funny to see a man in tights riding a horse.

Oh my! I love to see a man ride a horse! But show me a man who will put on a pair of white tights and shiny black tall boots, posting up and down on on dressage horse just makes me wet all over. I sure wish he could ride me like that! What a stud muffin!
Good God! he's stunning! (the horse) oh i could ride him all day and not care. if i owned him, i prob would just stare most of the time.( kinda like i do now) lol!
absolutely stunning, and just to all the people out there who are criticising i would love you to sit there and do that with a horse.everyone seroiusly get a life
well actually i can do that with a horse, so may i criticise it now?
i do think it's a little bit short in his hind legs, it isn't always so, but here it actually is. but i think it's a beautifull horse with really much talent~
Watch another video of him before passing judgment. He is a truly beautiful horse, however, I think the combo of the color of the footing/ having white hind socks and the low video resolution makes it look like he is short stepping, where is it simply an illusion. Just my opinion
This stallion is both famed & coveted. He has proved his worth in his sphere, & has good progeny. No-one can take this away from the horse, regardless of rider or circumstance. Personally, I do not see him "stiff" I see him "listening" to the music he has been trained to for this particular piece. Listen to the music.
Everyone shut the hell up and watch the damn video. The horse is and remains incredible whether you all sit there and argue about him having a 'short step on the hind legs' or being 'chained up' or what the hell ever else is not up to your standards.
I don't see any of your horses having a sport index of over 140 points and winning the Zwolle International AND the CHIO Rotterdam Kur.
as far as the choice of music...the judges can't go by the type of music or their own likes and dislikes at all - they judge if the horse stays on the beat and if the ride follows the music. i hope everyone can try to judge it, not by whether the music is their favorite or not, but by how well the choreography uses the ring and how much it allows the horse to show his best moves.
The steps of the hind legs are not too short - not for this sort of work. Lizzie, the rider is wearing what he would wear to a clinic or training session. It would be considered extremely rude to wear a tail coat and top hat to a ride like this.
This horse is magnificent! I found all these dressage videos by accident but my God these are some amazing animals. I love the part where it looks like they're skipping.
I think this horse is amazing and has huge amount of talent. Edward Gal is an amazing rider! The music is fresh and keeps your interested more so than the more traditional music used by everyone else. What more can i say apart from truly inspirational!!!
"how in the world does he do them" (in regards to half passes). This horse does have particularly good half passes, but both the naturay quality of the horse's trot and the amount of collection, which allows more crossing of the legs, add to the beauty of the half pass.
steedrider, something most people don't understand is that the hind legs are NOT supposed to reach so far forward in the collected work. Instead, they reach more upward, taking a rounder, rather than longer, stride. Not a shuffling step, but one just like this. this is actually very correct work, with the correct degree of reaching the legs forward.
LOL...if you notice, he is not dressed to show - he is giving a demonstration or just schooling his horse. This is why he is wearing a sweater and whatever headgear he chooses to wear or not wear. In competition, one wears a certain outfit. When not competing, it is the rider's choice - not a faux pas.
gribaldi would be my favourite dressage horse go gribaldi!!!

Please.
nelsonreed 3 years ago
I agree with Germanation - His hind legs aren't active in the piaffe or passage. Gorgeous horse, nonetheless!!!
Onaziz 3 years ago
I totally agree with what Germaination is saying but i am sure that it is agreed that gribaldi and edward gal are not the worst examples of the "grand prix" riding that we see in todays dressage. Look at Anky, she is so incorrect that i personally find it painfull to watch her videos of riding. The horses in todays dressage world to me look like a mix between the arab and hunter jumper riding. If you want to see real dressage then watch a Spanish Riding School video.
ClassicalDressage01 3 years ago 2
No they're not. Edward I believe is a more sypathetic rider than anky ever will be. He is more correct, but I think Gribaldi is example of what hyperflexion and what it creates, and incorrect horse with no true collection and inactivity in the hind end, not to mention thats he mysteriously went lame a while back.
Germaination 3 years ago
what hyperflexion is or what they use it for? You can't even recognize it! Go get off somewhere else
Germaination 3 years ago
Obviously they do. As beautiful as Gribaldi is, he is not correct. Salinero is the same. Take his piaffe for example. Very flashy, very elevated, but yet he does not sit. There is very little or no flexion of the hind legs. It is nice to look at but not correct. And in that video of yours, she barely hyperflex's the horse. Which is a good move PR wise considering the controversy surrounding the technique. LDR= Low, Deep, Round. There is no evidence of this. Do you even know what...
Germaination 3 years ago 3
ahhh the blessed spirits....pity about the lack of engagement behind. I love this music but I think it went better with Lingh
Germaination 3 years ago
Germaination.. you sound like you know what you are doing. You know the way Gribaldi drops his poll? I have a trekky who does the same thing and has started advanced. Any tips about the poll dropping crap? This happens especially in canter half pass and Im trying like hell, but with the poll up, it feels like his hocks are in the next county? Would appreciate advice, if you have any!!
bailycakes 3 years ago
one thing we do with one of our horses because he drops to far behind the vertical is to let your reins be longer and not to poll on the horses head. I'm not an expert horsewoman so if this doesn't help I'm just trying out some of my knowledge. Hope it will help a little... ;-)
08dressageGal 3 years ago
whats the contact like when he does this? does he drop the contact too? try letting your hand follow the bit down and ask him to stretch down into the hand. apply some pressue with the leg while you do so to push him towards the contact. Gradually introduce changes within the pace ie in trot lengthened stride back to working, lengthen again or collected into medium. pretty much the moment you feel him come back when asking for the downward transition push him immediately forward again..
Germaination 3 years ago
and once more into the contact. basically you are trying to encourage him to take the contact forward and down,as it sounds as though he is avoiding it. you can use this exercise within paces, between paces, depending on how advanced you are in you schooling and gradually you should find that he will begin to sit himself and comeup of his own accord as he becomes strong enough to do so. remember that you always want to feel that the horse is "searching"for the bit ie moving forward towards the..
Germaination 3 years ago
Contact is still good when he does it. His mouth doesn't change; just that sneaky break behind the poll appears. I warm up with his head to the ground (but I dont use any gogs or gadgets; that stuff would have him doing a permanent rollkur!)Changes in pace - he is really active & sensative for these and I do allot of it, but I have to keep telling him 'up' with the poll. I will try on the downward trans to give a little forward aid the moment he slows
bailycakes 3 years ago
germaination - His lack of engagement behind? You have rocks in your head.
Jaccko14 3 years ago
my god are you bloody blind? there are so many ways a horse can perform grand prix and he doesn't have to do it with collection and engagement though he should. he barely even tracks up! in piaffe/passage there is no bringing the hindleg forward towards the centre of gravity, he is all "out behind" like a 6 year old training grand prix. and if i've got rocks in my head, they seem to be pretty intelligent rocks. grow up.
Germaination 3 years ago 2
No you grow up. Girly when you have ridden a horse at GP please show how much enagement you have. A horse can simply not be ridden at GP without collection. You have rocks in your head for sure.
Jaccko14 3 years ago
boy-o, girl-o, what ever the fuck you re-o, I have ridden and trained GP and competed advenced? do you think I know wht I do by just reading books? I said he LACKS engagement. get some bloody glasses, read it properly and then get back to me. Or rather, take your pointless argument else where and find a poor soul as demented as you who gives a bugger about what you think you know and bitch to them.
Germaination 3 years ago 2
Germination - No i will not stop bitching. Who are you to critisize these people? You need to get it right because a horse that 'Lacks in engagement" does not win! Get it right!
Jaccko14 3 years ago
"a horse can simply not be ridden at GP without collection".
Have you ever been to a crappy dressage show? THEY SURE CAN!!! (get through the movements without collection, that is, for your clarification.)
Yes, Jackko, there IS such a thing as "fake dressage", or you may have heard the term, "circus dressage". I'm quite sure that you practice it religiously, in fact.
nelsonreed 3 years ago 2
No, a horse simply cannot do pirouettes, passage, piaffe without collection. Someone with half a brain should know that!
Jaccko14 3 years ago
YES, they can.
To piaffe WELL, he needs to sit on his hindquarters, and that will take years.
nelsonreed 3 years ago
I dont think you understand where i am comming from. If a horse can do a piaffe that is clear 2 beat without any rythmic problems, then the horse is collected. Sorry if you dont understand that but you really need to get your head around the fact that a horse performing any of those GP movemets is indeed collected. And just for the record, flashy knee actions IS everything! Competition dressage is the best, and if a horse doesnt make me want to look at it more than once then its not good enough.
Jaccko14 3 years ago
"And just for the record, flashy knee actions IS everything!"
oh.my.god.OMG what the hell boy?!?!?!
you are such a douche Jaccko14, every misinformed comment you write just shows you for the fool you are.
god help dressage....
imabananabetch 3 years ago
Jaccko14 - maybe you should do some research as to what dressage actually is. It's called horse ballet for a reason - and do you think all that ballet dancers care about is how flashy they are? I don't think so. Learn about real dressage, and real collection, and then start commenting.
TheAppleCiderBrigade 3 years ago
Maybe you should mind your own business and let it go you are not going to change my mind so whatever you say i dont care. Its about being flash, thats what dressage is about and thats what its becoming more and more, and im glad, because classical is so boring. Dressage should be fun and exciting, and thats what flash hot horses and modern riders have brought to the sport. Its great.
Jaccko14 3 years ago
Jackko, you're an idiot. Theres no such thing as your beloved "competition" dressage. There is classical and modern dressage. Flashy knee action is NOT everything, especially if a horse cannot correctly perform the movement (and it sure doesn't come in handy for something like the halt that your precious Anky can't seem to get her horses to do as much as they should, which BTW is a movement). These horses have been carefully and selectively bred for generations to move..
thecrazydolls 3 years ago 2
well and be conformed in a way that they find collection easy.

Darlin2323 3 years ago
It is his choice if he doesnt want to wear a helmet, he is a fantastic rider and probably trusts his horse very much. A lot of riders dont wear a helmet and that is OK, my instructor doesnt wear a helmet (when he jumps he does though) and he can stay on a bucking bronco horse and could easily fall off. But that is their choice and we cannot change that. I always wear a helmet and i think everyone should but if they dont then its not out problem if they hurt themselves.
lovepepperxx 3 years ago
Helmets should be worn whenever you are on a horse the ONLY exception to this is vaulting.

Right?
piaffe1 3 years ago
Actually, it hurts. And not in a good way.

If you think riding a horse feels that pleasurable then you must have never ridden on an English saddle (or ridden at all for that matter).

Pottypony 3 years ago

Watch another video of him before passing judgment. He is a truly beautiful horse, however, I think the combo of the color of the footing/ having white hind socks and the low video resolution makes it look like he is short stepping, where is it simply an illusion. Just my opinion
flygirleventer 4 years ago
This stallion is both famed & coveted. He has proved his worth in his sphere, & has good progeny. No-one can take this away from the horse, regardless of rider or circumstance. Personally, I do not see him "stiff" I see him "listening" to the music he has been trained to for this particular piece. Listen to the music.
scotia2k6 4 years ago
Everyone shut the hell up and watch the damn video. The horse is and remains incredible whether you all sit there and argue about him having a 'short step on the hind legs' or being 'chained up' or what the hell ever else is not up to your standards.
I don't see any of your horses having a sport index of over 140 points and winning the Zwolle International AND the CHIO Rotterdam Kur.
Jesus.
coversteps 4 years ago 2
The horse is not at all stiff, in fact. He's very supple. The hind legs do not sweep forward in collected work, by definition.
pirouette987 4 years ago
gribaldi is not stiff at all
but some horses ar not aible to put their legs so forward like others
why else is this horse so high trained by edward gal is the horse if stif?
20jennifer02 4 years ago 2
as far as the choice of music...the judges can't go by the type of music or their own likes and dislikes at all - they judge if the horse stays on the beat and if the ride follows the music. i hope everyone can try to judge it, not by whether the music is their favorite or not, but by how well the choreography uses the ring and how much it allows the horse to show his best moves.
pirouette987 4 years ago
and no, this horse is not at all stiff, either. in fact, he is extremely supple and well trained.
pirouette987 4 years ago
The steps of the hind legs are not too short - not for this sort of work. Lizzie, the rider is wearing what he would wear to a clinic or training session. It would be considered extremely rude to wear a tail coat and top hat to a ride like this.
pirouette987 4 years ago
This horse is magnificent! I found all these dressage videos by accident but my God these are some amazing animals. I love the part where it looks like they're skipping.
lizzieodonnell 4 years ago
Hmm.. Very short step on the hindlegs, and stiff movements.. I just don't see the greatness here.
Golvklut 4 years ago
I think this horse is amazing and has huge amount of talent. Edward Gal is an amazing rider! The music is fresh and keeps your interested more so than the more traditional music used by everyone else. What more can i say apart from truly inspirational!!!
kworlock10 4 years ago
"how in the world does he do them" (in regards to half passes). This horse does have particularly good half passes, but both the naturay quality of the horse's trot and the amount of collection, which allows more crossing of the legs, add to the beauty of the half pass.
pirouette987 4 years ago
riders do sometimes put bell boots on their horse's front feet for demonstrations if the horse has a tendency to get too exhuberant and play around.
pirouette987 4 years ago
areneaabby, the horse is not 'chained', there is nothing on his front feet!
pirouette987 4 years ago
steedrider, something most people don't understand is that the hind legs are NOT supposed to reach so far forward in the collected work. Instead, they reach more upward, taking a rounder, rather than longer, stride. Not a shuffling step, but one just like this. this is actually very correct work, with the correct degree of reaching the legs forward.
pirouette987 4 years ago
LOL...if you notice, he is not dressed to show - he is giving a demonstration or just schooling his horse. This is why he is wearing a sweater and whatever headgear he chooses to wear or not wear. In competition, one wears a certain outfit. When not competing, it is the rider's choice - not a faux pas.
pirouette987 4 years ago
That's a pretty huge crowd to not feel the need to dress up...
