Does anyone know of a breeder that does not charge $800+++? I live in Oregon, and have had such a hard time finding one. I see them online, but most look like they were not bred well & they charge a ton to ship. I am so discouraged. I have looked for well over a year. I want a Shiba Inu soooo bad!!! I don't want to support a puppy mill though & the breeders registered with AKC cost over a thousand dollars! Rescues wont adopt to us because we have a child & rent an apt =(
Don't worry about Right Puppy Kennel, I went there prior to purchasing my Shiba inu, while their business is breading dogs, they are not a puppy mill in the definition of keeping dogs as prisoners, never letting them out, just to produce puppies and so on. Right Puppy Kennel is a large operation, the dogs run in open spaces, well fenced, have a airconditioned break house, fresh water, and lots of love! The owner knows plays with each, they are family. Don't know anything about Tamaskan problems.
@Ofrahaza5 Great to hear a good testimonial about that place! I've talked with him a few times and he seemed so nice so I didn't want to believe the bad rumors. Just more proof to always do your own research :)
@petersruwen Ahh...no, lol. Amaterasu is indeed a wolf (although if I remember right, there's a Shiba in the game somewhere). The style of the Okami picture lent itself to the effect I want trying to achieve and it was also vague enough to resemble a Shiba. Unless, of course, you're familiar with the game, lol
I love me some shibas! I'm stationed in Japan and have 2. I think there is something wrong with my youngest. I think she's from an inbred litter. She's stocky and not very graceful. If she gets upset she will growl but won't hurt you. But she is still a very loving and friendly dog. Your video is awesome! Great job!
Very nice Video!!! im sure you got an A.... thanks for the info... im a first time dog owner and i got a shiba inu... should have done my reserach first but DEFINATELY do not regret!!
Great video! I've done a lot of studying on Shibas and I've never read anything that would say one way or another that they hate water. Personal experience puts it squarely on a dog by dog basis. I also don't count the dog hating baths as hating water.
Also please be careful with Right Puppy Kennel, I've heard some claims that they're a puppy mill and I know there's been issues between them, their "Tamaskans" and the club that oversees the breed.
@neoritter Thank you! I wish I could remember where I first read that they didn't like water. Most people I've talked to have also said that and I had always assumed that it was because of the plush texture of their coats. It holds water really well and probably feels heavy, but like you said, it always depends on the dog.
I've also heard the same things about that kennel (after I made this video). They had a great stock of quality Shiba photos that I could get quickly and easily. They also gave me permission to use them. Since I made this video as a class project, time was a factor, lol. Thanks so much for the great comment!
@motiger33 Then you are super lucky and I'm so jealous! Like I said, every dog is different and it looks like you got one of the few water-loving Shibas on Earth, lol.
@BringDeathByPickles Where I live, Shibas are pretty rare, so most of the shots are one dog. Gemma is regularly seen by a vet and is a healthy weight. Shiba Inus have a fat, squishy neck that can give them the appearance of being overweight. This is also the reason why almost every time you see a Shiba Inu, they are in a harness instead of just a collar.
It's a shame Dogs101 did not put as much effort into researching this breed as much as you. Nicely narrated :) My Yuni looks a lot like the mountain breed.
@Cheedynamic Thank you so much for the compliment :) I researched the breed a TON before I got my puppy, but Shibas are a weird kind of dog. You really have to talk to people who own them to understand them and I tried to mix that in with the boring book stuff.

Really well done - I certainly enjoyed watching!
Too bad that a lot of the dogs participating seem to be overweight though.
